    Hello! Been a while! I'm here to let you all know that the VHS rip one of my viewers kindly uploaded has been put up on the internet archive. So, it will never be lost again! Many still want to watch it but the original link expired so if you're one of the many people who've been asking about it just search it up on Archive.org and it will be the first result.

    Miyazaki DID distribute his films outside Japan in the 80s, just not America. Growing up in Hong Kong I remember I watched Castle in the Sky, Valley of the Wind, Totoro in cinema in the 80s, bought the films' official soundtracks and toys. Mainly because Hong Kong distributors understood the spirit and culture and didn't cut the film in any significant portion like New World Picture did.

My memory might be faint now but when I got a DVD in the early 2000s the only scene I did not recall was Nausicca's basement plant room. Everything else in the movie was how I remembered it.

    It's that they are harmless if they grow in unpolluted soil and water.

However, I will say that without WotW that I would not have been introduced to Miyazaki's work. Warriors of the Wind literally changed my life. It’s one of three films that made me want to be an artist. But I didn’t see Nausicaa until I went to college and my friends were horrified at how much they cut…still, it seems they couldn’t cut out that Miyazaki inspiration. Cutting the eye with the gunpowder, lying under the spores, and then the chase scene right after….they got me in five minutes and it’s been nearly forty years.

    OMG this just cleared up the 'Glitch' I have been living with my entire life. Warriors of the Wind came out when I was a kid and became the most influential movie of my childhood. The princess was my hero, and impacted how I saw the world around me forever. I rented that movie whenever possible as a kid, until it suddenly disappeared. Because this was of course, pre-internet, Warriors of the Wind was lost to me until discovering Nausicaa in my 20s. Watching it as an adult however, I could never understand why so many scenes seemed new and why I could never remember the name of the movie. I seriously thought I just made up the name warriors of the wind as a small child lol. All of the Studio Ghibli movies are my favorite and I was incredibly grateful to have a different kind of princess to look up to as a child thanks to Miyazaki. This is a long post but I just want you to know how important this has been to me and to thank you for proving to me I wasn't crazy after all 😊❤

    Very nice video! Lots of info! I do want to offer a different perspective on “Warriors of the Wind.” I was in 5th grade when this was released on home video. My father and I hungered for any animated science fiction, particularly from Japan. When we watched “Warriors of the Wind” we were absolutely blown away. Many of the cuts you mention were actually in the version we saw (the gun powder around the giant eyelid, for example). Also, the environmental message was still present, and the movie did retain its somewhat dark and melancholy tone. I agree that the Disney dub is a far better product, truer to the creator’s original vision, but I will always have a soft spot for the “Warriors” dub and the impact it had on my father and me!

Also the scene in the bottom of the forest and Nausicaa’s rescue not only by Asbel, but by Rastel’s mother. the cuts were apparently to simplify the plot and add to the action for the sake of making the movie "kid friendly". Note the cover...one character has a light sabre; another character seems mostly mechanical; plus the ohm being ridden is similar to the sandworm scenes in Dune. A link to Star Wars and other recognizable films helped make the cut version more marketable. In all the flick was released on tape primarily for the Children's section of the videostore.

    • @Zeburaman2005
      @Zeburaman2005 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      diddymuck A funny bit of trivia is that Miyazaki was allegedly inspired by Dune to create Nausicaa, especially when he named the Ohmus, as it was the closest phonetical Japanese rendition of the word "worm". So it's pretty ironic to see how things came full circle with the Warriors of the Wind's poster.

      There was a snarky comment in "Amazing Heroes" years ago that said the cutting of "Nausicaa" into "Warriors" was to lose footage objected to by Union Carbide. In December 1984--about two weeks after the film's premiere--the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India had a leak that killed more than 3,500 people. After that, they were VERY conscious about their public image. I doubt that an animated Japanese film from an unknown director was on their radar, but the scenes that were cut included Nausicaa's secret laboratory where she shows Lord Yupa that the jungle itself was not inherently toxic as the Valley had thought. The princess here was more heroic than most people have realized...

    Great video! Warriors of the Wind was one of the earliest anime I had ever seen back in, I think, 1986. I was all of 11 or so at the time but I was sucked in by the incredible animation, it was unlike anything I had seen before. I was much less picky about plot at that age, I didn't understand what anime even was. I just knew that I was hooked. Warriors of the Wind may have been a prime example of bad editing, but it certainly stoked my fires for more and I have been a fan ever since. I even ordered an english dubbed Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind from Japan a couple of years before the release stateside. This movie, along with the show Starblazers and Robotech put me well on the road to appreciating the art, I've always been happy I was around when anime really picked up in the states, there is just something about anime that a lot of American animation just doesn't even get close to.

The only scene I do not remember recalling from my 80s viewing was Nausicca's basement room of juggle plants. It's not entirely true that no Miyazaki anime was released outside Japan before 1996.
    The UK had a dubbed and uncut release of Sherlock Hound on VHS in the 80's, and a
    dub of Laputa was aired on UK TV around 1990/1991 (though that one was a little edited).

    I still have a vhs copy from my friend, and also I remember contacting David Schmoeller who was involved in the Warriors version but an earlier version for Manson International but was not sure it survived to New World’s release.
    This is what he said
    “It was in the early 1980's - so, it must have been the badly edited 85 minute version. I had nothing to do with editing the film. The Foreign distributor did not like the English dub of the film and brought me in to help fix the dub.
    The main problem was that the people who did the original English dub, wrote the english dialogue to fit the lip sync length, whether the English dialogue made any sense or not.
    I don't think it ended up much better when all was said and done.
    Disney picked up the rights to the movie in the early 2000's and honored the director's wish to keep it the original length (117 minutes?) and that the English translation match the Japanese dialogue. They also hired Hollywood star actors to do a new English dub.
    I don't know anything about the New World release - except I'm sure it is better than the 1980's version...”
    P.S. - I hope pieces of the Warriors HD Trailer that I did were used.

    Thankfully, I was so young when I saw Warriors of the Wind that I only really had vague impressions of since of its action sequences and environments when I "rediscovered" it through the anime pages of a Swedish gaming magazine... probably around 2001?
    So I'm pretty sure I spent hours downloading a fansub of the movie, probably through Kazaa. The first scene with Yupa was slightly corrupted, but I've loved the movie ever since and collect various DVD and Blu-ray releases. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost track of my Chinese DVD in recent years, though I still have my Hong Kong bootleg...

    The cuts can be summed up with removing 90 percent of the envomental message and kept most of the antiwar message. It was very specfic.

  • @juliabrnssr
    @juliabrnssr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Fascinating, from what you are saying, the German release suffered even more cuts than the American release. 5:15 This scene is still there in it's entirety. 7:28 I'm pretty sure is still there but I'd have to double check. 8:12 I know for sure is in there. With the New World Release, there is internal thought that plays, while the Disney version remains silent. As a side note, you mention the cover of the movie. From what I've seen the European version is a lot closer to the original. vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/doblaje/images/8/86/Warriors_of_the_Wind_poster.png/revision/latest?cb=20161028174348&path-prefix=es Not sure if you are interested but I did a video as well comparing the 2 movies back to back. th-cam.com/video/n6yYmBROGHM/w-d-xo.html

    If you know where to look, someone created a fan edit using the blu-ray to recreate an HD version of *Warriors of the Wind.* It could use a little more work (some edits have split second bits of the following scene before the proper cut. Funnily enough, I notice this when watching it on VLC on my PC, but not when watching it on my HDTV). I would be interested in seeing a version 2.0 adding a proper *WotW* title overlay (when Zhondra is walking in the Toxic Jungle in the intro) and adding the "snowing on the Gorgon shell" and "the childhood vision" when they're in the Toxic Jungle after the destruction of the Temeculan freighters.
    In regards to the poster, I'm surprised they didn't go with the UK VHS artwork, which is _fantastic!_ It is the one that usually has a red border, and it depicts Lord Yuppa being chased by an angry Gorgon, with Zhondra flying in the foreground above, with the Temeculans all behind her.

    4:42, that video of this person showing his tape of WOTW saying “an old Miyazaki film that was bastardized due to censorship” no longer exists. So now this is the only footage of it that remains. Though about a year ago almost someone uploaded a remastered version of the Warriors edit. Which actually didn’t really offend me and people saw that when they were young weren’t.

    Don't know how much "truth" there is to this, but regardless of how you feel about a lot of the name changes (Gorgon; Fire Demon), the changed names for the 2 other city nations are actually derived from cities/areas located in California.
    Temecula is located in south eastern California, near Silicon Valley (between Los Angeles and San Diego). Placeda I believe is also located in California (I forgot where my brother and I found it on the map, but I think it's north/ northeast of Temecula, about the north area of the San Juaquin valley). From this I assume that the valley of the wind is what's left of San Fransisco, which would explain the Super Submarine located near the bay (as San Fransisco has a heavy Navy presence), which, after a few thousand years, was cut off from the ocean and turned into a toxic reservoir/lake (one can believe that there are multiple super submarines sunk in the acid lake, and it was leaking nuclear waste from their reactors that caused the lake to become toxic over time).
    Edit: doing a quick google search, there is a Placentia, California located in Orange county, almost right next to Temecula. Either Placeda is a competing city state, with the Temeculans and Placedans being the future remnants of Los Angeles and San Diego (as well as Silicon Valley and any industry in that area), or Placeda is supposed to be more in San Juaquin valley or even western Nevada, considering the desert environment (maybe the White Sands area of California).
    Wow.. looking at a Google map of California, Placentia/Placeda would be right next to White Sands. I guess if Los Angeles and San Diego were turned to glass during the Five Days of Fire, I'm guessing the Temeculans and Placedans moved in over the next century to scavenge the remains of the cities, and eventually built their own city state empires from there.

    Oh, boy, if there was ever a really bad time to try marketing "Nausicaa" to the U.S., it was... well, anytime before the year 2000, really prior to that, U.S. film studios just assumed American movie goers weren't interested in female leads and would actively go out of their way to always focus on the men in the marketing. So the localizers felt they had to lie about what this film was about in the advertising. So, I'm not surprised this bombed hard.

    Hm. I saw this movie in my early teens, and my memory of it is kinda blurry. But I remember that it was the first "grown up" anime I've ever seen and how I was completely blown away by the animation style, music and story - at the time I had never seen anything like it before. Also, it was the first english-dubbed anime I've ever seen (I live in Germany, usually movies are dubbed in German over here), and at the time my english was not the best so I most likely did not understand some parts of the story.
    Watching this video I wonder what version of the movie I actually saw. I got my hands on a press copy of the movie called "Warriors Of The Wind", but I definitely remember the opening scene that went of for many minutes without a single line of dialogue, where she's exploring the spore jungle, collecting samples - according to this video that scene shouldn't be there. Did Germany/Europe get the original cut, but with the "Warriors of the wind" title?
