เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ก.ค. 2014
On this homestead we do a little bit of everything. We work on vehicles, farm equipment, DIY's, farm & homesteading projects, work with tractors, & welding. We Hunt, Fish, mess with Livestock, Chickens, Fowl and Firewood.
We work with tractors & a dozer. I've wanted to post videos on TH-cam to share my experiences and hopefully teach someone something that would benefit them. Thanks

Thats a pretty good little tractor
The little thing impresses me Mr Tim
I thinking your test was a good real world test for outdoors. But maybe wood stove or fire plce simulator for an idea.
Not a bad idea Mr Tim
I start fires the same way in the stove and outside.
I'm going to have to revisit this in the future.
Oh wow! It progressed even more man. Pretty shocking really.
I was surprised with the results for sure. Looking forward to trying this again with some other stuff
I think that what you have is sufficient for sure. If you are going to have to make smaller splits and slivers, why bother with a starter right? Interesting for sure. Really wanna see you do more testing with these man!
Thank you Mr Joe. I though about making some really small splits but i thought these should start what i had just fine
Go Tiny Go! But can you ferry bails to the fields? Keep cuttin' brother!
Tiny does great. I can and ill use it to feed sometime. Its just slower. Not the best tool for the job when i have other larger machines. but no reason you couldn't use it if that's all we had. Thanks for stopping by
I was hoping you would measure the wood once it was split.
I should of. I will on the next test
Great video,thanks
Thanks for watching Mr Fred
That little tractor is impressive. The extra step is a bonus as well.
Thank you Mr Russ. I waa glad to see it being used instead of sitting on the shelf
I was actually wondering how it would do far as hay! I'd say it does great!
Hey Mr Ted. Ive been meaning to try this cuz I've been curious as well. I'm glad to know if I had to feed with it i could.
Bonus Mike. That step bolted right on the other side. I'm always amazed by the compact tractor power.
Hey Mr Kenny. I was just glad the step wasn't collecting dust anymore and was able to be used. For being a small tractor It does amazing things
Looks like it did well. Google says 4x5 is ~900lbs, and 4x6 is ~1100lbs. 5x6 1400lbs. Looks like a 4x6 would be about the max to lift them and move them longer distances regularly. I guess it could do two 4x5 on front and two on the 3 pt. That would be a sight to see 😂
Hey Mr JT thank you. that would be a site to see. I'd be scared picking that many up that my tractor would snap in half. That is close i beleive to what's these weight. There is always variations on bale weight
Mike, Thanks for sharing !
Mr Ted thank for stopping by and watching
I wonder how mine would do?
I would like to see how it would do as well. I feel like it wouldn't be a challenge but would be curious how it acts with no ballast
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead yep
TYM did fantastic! I was waiting for the grey sludge to come out by the way. Impressive machine Mike. That Auto Throttle is great for stuff like this for sure.
Mr Joe it did great. The auto throttle definitely has its place. I still really like it on this machine. Lol you knew the grey stuff was coming out lol. I'm going to have to switch it up to my copper based antiseize
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead Wranglerstar is the loctite man you are the anti seize man!
@@oakiewoodsman lol
It did about as expected with it's capacity rating. Ballast is key and you had that covered well. 🚜
Hey Srstla. I don't think it would have handled this that well without ballast. I wish with the capacitys some of these machine manufacturers would put some ballast on these machines from factory
Morning Mike! Tiny is performing pretty well! I remember the Mahindra doing it when we were moving hay. It struggled a bit but Jason always found a way! Have a great day!
Hey you two. That Mahindra is a tuff machine as well. Hope the snow has quite causing grief
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead not snowing at the moment but it's really cold again!
Wonder how it would do w mine. 4*4 but baleage not dry
Mr Brandon I would like to try some of that. Being wet is going to be heavy. Idk i would like to think it would but not sure.
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead road trip Use my JD 2750 to feed it w 3 pt spear. No weight on front and it makes the front end light
@brandonhoad9033 Id love to head up that way. That's wild. Some of that baleage / silage can get pretty heavy
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead I'll try to remember to ask my guy if he has an idea of the weight.
I would be curious to know as well
I'm going to go down the road 3/4 mile to get a bale today . I think mine are 4x5
Your bobcat should handle those no problem. Most of ours are 4x5's. I prefer 4x6's just because it lasts longer for the cows to eat on.
@ yes no problem I do miss the days when a bale would last 2 weeks not one 🤪
I would love i one lasting two weeks. Currently 1 bale every few days. Been putting 2 bales out a time and we have to feed hay every 4-5 days
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead beats feeding multiple times a day plus pulling teats
@@brandonhoad9033 Life of a dairyman I 100% agree. Thats 24-7 / 365
I'm watching and I'm just told some guy is coming over to get 3 piglets.
Morning Mr Todd. I hope he shows up. how many more you have to get rid of?
@ she says we're keeping three I think we should get rid of one at least or two cause we're gonna have more litters and they you know we'll have runs and we always keep the runts, we have three slots in September, but we can always add on some more
How do I do it without those tools! Just a punch file and hammer.
Hey Matthew, to rivet one back together you can just use a ball peen hammer with several small taps on the rivet. dont hit the rivet hard
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead I got it apart with my hand tools. Waiting for my presets to come in the mail tom. Thanks tho. Do you have any idea. If the presets are all on the same side. Or do they alternate with the cutting teeth?
@@matthewbeaver5026 what do you mean presets?
@@TheRustyGarageandHomestead the side with the rivets made into it. Rather than just the link
@@matthewbeaver5026 ah ok. no usually those are all on the same side of the chain. Its easier to have them all one way when manufacturing the chains
I use any paper I can get my hands on lol. I made my own last year and it worked really well just haven’t had time this year.
Im going to have to make a video of homemade fire starters and see how it works
We save the paper towel and tp rolls and stuff dryer lint in them works like a champ any you get rid of your Garbage
Hey Andrew, Thats a good idea I haven't thought of using it that way before. Do you pack the lint in the tube tight or leave it kind of loose?
When I run out of that stuff I just burn my mail mostly the bills😅
@andrewperry8389 hahahaha yes my bills need to be the 1st to get burnt. That made ne laugh reading that
I graduated from matches many years ago! I use my little propane bottle torch! Makes life easy and no firewood starter required just a little kindling!
@tedneitzel Mr Ted i think I'm going to need to pick up one of those torches. I still was suprised with the results of this test.
The proof is in the pudding. Real world scenario. Rutland for the win. Good one Mike
@OpenAirAdventureFirewood Mr Kenny, thank you. I was surprised by the results. It was a fun test. Will be testing some more im the future
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead make your own and put them to shame.
i think im going to have to try some different homemade ones and put a video out on them now to see what works
I've never tried a store bought fire starter - just too cheap so I use newspaper, cardboard & softwood kindling
@902hand7 hey 902. I would like to try this scenario again with not spending any money and see what would win
I used 3 sheets of newspaper and 1 bales worth of plastic hay string. Works well for me.
Mr Paul im going to have to give that a try sometime. Thanks for stopping by
Need a propane torch outside it might help!
I 100% agree with the wind i had. I need to pick one up
Hey super video. If your kids ever need a science fair experiment-there you go just video tape and set up a board. Coming from a retired science teacher. 🤓🤓
Thank you. I was suprised by the results and happy for the test.
Where's Russ's (williy's) starter? 😅
@@brandonhoad9033 in the mail and in the way!
Hey Mr Brandon. They are on their way. I'm looking forward to trying these. We are going to have to test those as well
BBQ lighter works but a torch is way easier on your stress level. Lol. Wind is annoying! Good video Mike, nice comparison! Thanks for testing these out for us. I still like our bacon grease and an egg carton formula for starting fires and it's free. 😊
Free is great for sure. Depending on the wind next time I might be using a torch lol. How does the bacon grease and egg carton work? Might be something I need to try
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead yes, give it a try for sure! Lasts well long enough to get the kindling lit!
@lorettaandjasonoffgrid do you just pour the grease over the carton or fill up the little egg spots and cut them out? I might need to see a video of this lol
@TheRustyGarageandHomestead lol! We keep the grease in jars so it actually coagulates and you can scoop it out. I put a spoon of goo in each egg spot and close it up. Lol. We have been talking about doing a short of all the many uses of bacon grease!
@lorettaandjasonoffgrid ah ok that makes sense. You should its got lots of uses
Good video idea. I'll prolly pick up some of those square starters.
Hey JT. I honestly didn't suspect those to win like they did. I was suprised by the test
Best fire starter on Amazon is clearly Charmander, just saying... I'm sorry, I needed to get that out of my system.
Lol I'm glad it is out of your system thank you
😂😂😂
There is another fires starter I'd like you to test 😜. They are on their way!
Just asked him where yours is 😂.
Thank you Mr Russ. We will do test those. Looking forward to them

I never have sealed my ends
That is good to know. I have some anchor seal but thought you almost had to use that to keep them from checking
That log looked pretty heavy man!
I should of put it in a calculator to get an idea. Tiny did good moving it
Man i had high hopes for that one it sure looked good. But growing pains
Yes sir Mr Tim. Fingers crossed they improve it.
I just put one of these together watching your videos, you did an excellent job. One note is with the bar studs for the side plate. Looking at those it feels like the short threaded side should go down. One issue is the bevel on one side, the other side with the long threads is flat. I put them in with the beveled side/short threads down into the case. It didn't sit well with me due to the bevel doing some minor damage when tightened?! Then i noticed there were too many threads showing with the side cover/chain cover installed. Then i noticed a bevel in the bolt holes on the underside of that chain cover. Shit I said 😂 Flipped them over, i had them tight and the 242 was starting to set up. Long thread down into the case, it felt right. Plus it makes sense, this is a pro saw. It should survive a drop onto the bar, more threads = less likely to pull out of the case. Bolts flipped and it looks right, it also the chain cover has 0 slop when the retaining nuts are finger tight. Just an fyi for anyone following along, and if you still have the saw. ❤ I picked this kit up after craving a model car or something i could build in my office. This 100% scratched the itch. 😶🌫️ I had tried to order one of these back in april direct from farmertech. Luckily I used paypal, after shipping it was a little over 200 bucks with the cheapest option. I waited like four months, going back and forth with them. Paypal gives 5 months if i remember correctly. Just excuses and telling me to wait longer. I had the flywheel tool on hand, a stihl chain tensioner, and a ms660 stihl plastic name plate on hand waiting. I finally had to get paypal involved... Money back real quick afterwards. Then here we are newr Christmas, i saw the kit in ebay for about $100 more and said why the hell not! Anywaya, with those two stihl parts i also did some porting of my saw. Widened both the intake and exhaust, polished the exhaust port, and opened and smoothed out the transfer ports. I also deleted the base gasket after doing some assessment of the quench using modeling clay. Motoseal for the base gasket, final quench meaured with solder shoved into the sparkplug hole. A nice clean .021, perfect!! I went with a 32in bar, big enough to look cool and to be useful, but not totally silly. 😂 I can't wait to try this thing out.
Hey Just fishing. Lol I have noticed the bar study don't make alot of sense the way I put them in. I've been running it as is but when you me mentioned dropping the saw that got me thinking I should probably swap them around for strength. These are fun projects to take on. This was the 1st one I ever did and the saw is still going strong. Thanks for stopping by
