I was walking with my girlfriend in Cartagena in the night (street lights and people around) and a teenagers group waited for us and one of the snapped my gf’s camera. I shouted ladron! and picked him up in the air and punched him. He was shocked (a gringo with no fear) ,bleeding and started running away. I was crazy enough to chase him to get the camera. He took out his gun and shot at me. Luckily missed and I continued chasing him. Got really close and he dropped the camera.

Same except I had a family try to rob me. I just returned from there in late 2023. I went to a beach by my hotel. I took my phone and some items with me (towel, sunscreen etc). Two lil girls approached me while I was talking to my family on FaceTime. Then I spoke to them. While I was talking to them (the kids) I noticed their father who was bathing in the ocean with another one of his children, a boy who appeared to be 12 years old. The father gave me the creepiest smile that I've ever seen in my life. He then sent the boy to rob me. The boy slowly got out of the ocean and came where I was at. He kept pacing back and forth staring at my phone. I told him, "Fuck off. Go away". He went back to the dad and told him, "I can't rob her". The father told him, "Go back. Try again". He then came back twice. Walking back and forth in front of me. I finally yelled, "Fuck off or I'm going to call POLICIA". The boy got scared and went back to the dad. The dad sent all 3 kids home. I watched them as they slowly walked off the beach.
Finally, it was the dad's turn. The dad quickly dried himself off and then walked up to me. He started speaking Colombian Spanish. Very fast Spanish. He knew I didn't know a word. He stood there and just stared at me. I said to myself, "you are going to get rap*dddd and robbed by this man. Leave". The entire time my family is yelling on the phone, "Get tf out of there"!!!! He continued to stand there for 2 mins just staring at me...waiting for me to put my items and phone down and run into the ocean. I never did. I gave him the dirtest look and walked away to the other side of the beach. I then watched him as he slowly walked back home.
One of the worst experiences of my life. Those ppl are so poor. All they do is rob and scam. I will never go back fo Cartagena. 👎🏼

Thanks. With large sums close to $100 it's a huge deal if the scam is several times more expensive than it should be.
Gotta admit when I'm traveling I don't care if I'm scammed into paying $2 instead of 1$ for dinner - it's still a bargain dinner for me, I can't be bothered to haggle over 1 dollar when it's still super cheap compared to what I'd normally pay.
But for prices over $20 I'll pay attention

But please don't accuse me of being a victim of THIS type of scam for a huge amount
As mentioned I pay attention to larger sums so no way I'd pay for a $100 boat ride without checking the price.
That price is expensive even in Europe, I can go on a dinner cruise for like $30 so even if I thought it was the legit price I wouldn't do it as it would be insanely expensive.

I get approached by scammers once in awhile and they usually leave if you tell them to go but every once in awhile I have to turn around and threaten them with physical violence before they back off.

Cartagena was a really nice place. I think you will find scams in many places. I went there together with my taxi driver from Barranquilla and he took care of all things. the worst scam i've experienced was a Taxi driver from San Francisco to Fairfield aprox. 50 mile he charge the meter times 2 because he was outside the city of San Francisco. He didn't mention that the price would be doubled up before the trip started.

Just avoid Cartagena and you won't have to deal with aggressive vendors, widespread scammers, etc. The vast majority of Colombians are honest and fair. I just got back from six weeks in Colombia and only gotten ripped off once by a cab driver in Bogotá, who I realized charged me like 7000 COP extra ($1.50). That's on me though, you can just take uber/didi/etc instead and know exactly what you're paying for the ride.

Always go to the official office. There’s a license scam in the Czech rebuplic that can’t happen if you go to the official ticket spot and not one that forces you to do a cash conversion

I too was scammed at Cartagena de Indias in Colombia by taking advantage of the incredible amounts of zeros in their currency. I advise everyone to have their calculator program on their phones easily available and to submit ANY AOUNT you're given and divide it by 4,000, the rough estimate of Colombian pesos per $1.00 USD. They DEPEND on your ignorance of so many zeros in the currency! I've NEVER SEEN ANYTHING like that anywhere else in Colombia!
