    Unusual to see so much meta discussion about the podcast structure from a temporary guest co-host. I think he did well all the same, could possibly use some guidance about the 4th wall, seems like this might be his first time in the hot chair presenting. Definitely has potential, would be interesting to see him again.

    I really enjoy when you talk about the intrinsic details of research. More stats next time please.

    Fun episode! Btw, VHS doesn't work that way. You're thinking of film. You can however edit VHS in more-or-less the way you mentioned, but unless you're using specialized equipment, it won't be that precise. You have to guess where the sequence begins and ends.

    In regards to recomping, can this discussion be expanded to include “maingaining” for trained, relatively lean lifters? Once a recomp is no longer feasible, could one potentially eat at maintenance to gain muscle and fat at a ratio that results in basically looking the same but bigger by maintaining body fat percentage?
    Trying to eliminate the need to cut here.

    Last meal of the day: 2-3 tbsp peanut butter, 1 or 2 cups cottage cheese, 1 or 2 scoop whey. Blend together until consistency of pudding. Idc, it's amazing.

    I'm glad the research supports how great french fries are. I eat french fries loads on my dieting phase. Half a kilo of the low fat oven baked ones I get is only 650 calories 😂 they're one of my top diet foods for satiety (as long as you get one with low oil for the good macros). They're also totally delicious!

    I'm curious In what resources would you guys recommend for someone trying to get into understanding research. The university subject on reading science was ok, but I feel there is a huge gap they didn't cover because even within graduate level, most don't need it.

    I recall the last time Greg commented on protein‘s thermic effect on social media, he referenced that the thermic effect was *already* calculated into the 4 cals/gram number.
    The way Eric talks about it at 9:48 though makes it sound like the 4 cals/gram number for protein doesn’t include the increased thermic effect. I’ve always been confused if it’s included or on top of?

    • @RaveyDavey
      @RaveyDavey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's on top of it. 4 cals is the amount of energy your body can metabolise/extract from 1g of protein.

      Who you gonna listen to? A well respected, admired and credentialed professional like Eric or some temporary guest host hack brought in to fill a vacancy? Really, it's a no-brainer man. 😂

      @MMRSean 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RaveyDavey that’s what I always thought too. But Greg is one of the few people where, to be honest, if he says something I’m like “ok well that’s probably right” haha. And a couple years ago (I forget where) he said it was included in the 4 number.

    In regards to the seed oil thing, I think the concept of healthy fats has just hit the mainstream zeitgeist and to have healthy 'good' fats, you nessessarily need to have unhealthy 'bad' fats. With saturated fats being en vogue and fats like omega 3s, olive oil, nuts and avocado seen as good, seed oils and other 'processed' 'unnatural' (naturalistic fallacy) oils are the obvious choice. Heck until recently I was on that train and stills struggle with giving it up for no good reason.

    So what is the sweet spot calorie deficit to lose fat and build muscle at the same time is it around 300-400 calories?

    The problem with the almond study is the almonds were salted and roasted, the french fries were the thick kind.
    It was funded by some potato lobby group.

    • @greglnuckols
      @greglnuckols 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't see how that's a problem. That's the most common type of almond people snack on, and the most common type of fry people consume at home. Seems pretty ecologically valid to me. And, if anything, if someone were to posit that those small distinctions (roasted and salted almonds vs. raw, and thick fries vs. thin) actually made that large of a difference, it just further reinforces my point about the drawbacks of nutritional epidemiology; population surveys about frequency of consumption of different types of foods aren't going to differentiate between the types of almonds or the types of french fries people consume.

    When fat oxidizes it has to be processed by the liver and turned into liver fat, and no that's not good at all.

    Unprovoked shade cast on hash browns. Fried potato is more than just "fries" and "chips" (properly known as "chips" and "crisps", respectively). Do better.

    Oils of all kinds are vilified in some corners of vegan youtube and have been, as far as I can tell, for years. That's more of a trend than a specific event, though.
    It IS oil-specific, and overlaps with but is not identical to very low-fat vegan diets like 80-10-10; the logic appears to be oil-free = healthier than with oil, even in the presence of a high level of fat, such as 2 cups tahini or similar. Because reasons.

    While Greg is fair in his critique on the limitations (and utility) of epidemiological studies, can we truly trust him given how often he says "the data" (not "the data set") rather than "these data" or what, y'all?

    Hey guys, I love your podcast and look forward to them. They were a bit much to digest when they were 2-hour+ but I managed. So, I was very excited to hear your efforts to produce 1-hour versions twice a week. However, your efforts are already showing signs of early deterioration. You might as well go back to one 2-hour episode per week if your bi-weekly podcasts plan to run over an hour.

    Body Recomposition only works if you're on roids. forget anything else you've heard. Building muscle requires gaining fat, that fat won't magically go away unless you cut (diet).

    Ok here it goes and please listen up people. There r ONLY 3 people that can trully recomp period. The person that's new to training with a bodybuilding diet. Someone coming back from a layoff from training and someone on roids. Again PEROID. The person who chases 2 rabbits catches none. Top notch bodybuilders natural and enhanced bulk and cut for ONE reason only..IT WORKS.
