    I built two of these for the outside portion of my duck pen. It works really well, but I needed to use duct tape to seal that bottom area as shown in the video. Mine was getting water inside with these heavy Florida rains, but the tape is working well to keep it dry. We have had two or three downpours since I added the tape, and still dry in the tubes. Great design. I just had to lift mine a bit higher by standing the two feeders atop two bricks as my ducks got larger.

    Found it already the wife loves it we're heading to the hardware store to get started :) We just had a chicken tractor build competition this weekend. I'm just happy because I won. :) Thanks for all everything , seriously it's the best one out there. Now we have to figure out a base for it just in case we want to let them free range. In the tractor I'll use pipe strapping to keep it standing straight.

    Suggest putting the same cap used for the top on the bottom and cut another groove on the opposite side of the 1 1/4" feed tube so feed can spread to the other side. Great job!

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      + American Patriot - I made several before this and I tried both of your suggestions.
      Putting a cap on the bottom allows about three inches of food to drop into the bottom that the animals can't even eat that just gets old and ends up eventually needs cleaned out, this way, no mess, no waste and virtually no cleaning.
      Pretty much one of my designs shortly after that one was for almost saving from the same thing, putting the square hole in the front so no food would go in the back where it isn't even needed but the food would sometimes get clogged, especially cat food and dog food, that is why I still to this day cut them flat on the bottom so you can raise the tube up and lower it down to adjust for different size foods. Laying mix, whole corn, cat food and dog food. I use these to feed my chickens, ducks, cats and dogs once a week and they never run out of food, never gets clogged and hardly ever needs cleaning.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      + M Ro - ! feeder will easily feed 25 chickens, the only catch is the more chickens your feeding the longer tube you will need or the more often you will have to fill it.
      Since there is always food available you will hardly ever see one eating.
      If you run them out of food and let them all get hungry, that is the only time you will see them all trying to eat at once.
      thanks for the question, Duane

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      + Metal Mech
      There are three different types of silicone that I'm familiar with.
      Medical grade - safe
      Food grade - safe
      (I don't think people are using either of those.)
      Silicone sealant from a big box store reads on the side of it - toxic until dry, keep away from eyes and skin, continued contact has been found to cause cancer in animals.
      I don't trust that it isn't still toxic when dry then if small pieces wear off and are eaten by my chickens then my family eat their eggs.

    I built one so thanks for the idea. I did however have an issue with mold in the tubing. I'm in NY and the humidity gets very high. I took it apart and cleaned everything really good but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what you may have done to fix it? I really don't want to take it apart and clean it every week.

      Jim Murray - Wow, I can’t believe it. I’m not going to say that it’s humid here because we don’t live on the water here in Ohio but we do get a fair amount of rain and I have never had any mold problems in any of my feeders and I’ve used them for years. do you mind me asking what kind of feed are you using?

      Don't have the bag as I keep it in a sealed container, but it nothing out of the ordinary, just purchased it from my local Agway. I wondered myself if that was were the moisture was coming from. I also shortened the drain piece on the bottom as it was touching the ground.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Paul Hernandez - Thank you for the reply. I tried using a test cap years ago when I first started making these and the terrible thing about a test cap is there will be about 3 inches of food laying in the bottom that the birds never have a chance to eat so it rots in the bottom and starts all the rest of the food to rot. Don't do it, trust me, that is a bad bad mistake I made in one of my early designs.

    Do you have the pieces listed anywhere? If not as a suggestion maybe you could add them to your description area up above. Great video. We have been looking at different ideas and after see your video we are excited to try this. Do you know if this keeps mice or sparrows out or at least reduce it? We have tried switching to pellets because we get so many sparrows. We have the plastic hanging feeder but we put it in a dry spot under the coop. Can you use pellet with this or is it for crumble only ? Thank you for sharing this video.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Diane Patterson - I only verbally named the pieces, That is a great idea to list them, thank you for the suggestion, and thank you you for the comment, I'll do that soon. I have never seen one mouse, but a chicken is a better mouser than a good farm cat. As far as the sparrows go and as far as what all kinds of feed you can use in these, watch this video, - th-cam.com/video/IKFNZLCgTg4/w-d-xo.html - I use crumbles, cracked corn, hole corn, pellets, cat food and dog food in this same exact style feeder to feed baby chicks - adult chickens, baby ducks - adult ducks, cats and our chihuahua. You can feed most any animal with these. I personally don't hang feeders or raise them trying to keep anything out and I have never seen one unwanted animal accept for a possum eating from our cat feeder, Six cats sat and watched the possum eat their food. Chickens bodies are designed to bend at the hip and peck from ground level, that is one thing I incorporated into the design.

      I found your updated video last night. Great video and shows all the parts really well. We are going to make this for the cats after we make it for the chickens. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. Love the sound of the rooster in the back ground. Wish we could have one here.

    Dead Eye Duane. As I believe I mentioned somewhere this is an awesome design. So awesome I built a couple for my chickens. Unfortunately the chickens tend to dig into the food and toss it out of the feeder. I must have had 2 or 3 cups of feed on the ground after the first 2 days. You've not seen an issue with this? Maybe my chickens are slobs?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gary Borad - A friend gave me a hen that did the same thing.
      I believe the reason his chicken started her bad habit is because he mixed his feed and she went digging for her favorite.
      Don't mix your feed, have a different feeder for different needs. Laying mix, corn, grit etc.
      for a few days until she learns, only put a little in at a time so she will run out and not find what she is looking for.
      It worked for my hen,
      Hope it works for yours.

  • @danielwagner6290
    @danielwagner6290 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All feed gets wet from moisture and humidity in the air when you leave it out all the time. Feed is dry so it will suck it up leaving it out for extended period of time. Even fog has a lot of moisture in the air and if the food is out in it, it shall suck up water in the dry feed. So, you can't ever say it will never get wet. You can say rain water may not get directly inside. Even splashing water on the ground next to it will get water in the opening. Why do you think it is dirty on the inside? Moisture got in there. The best is to feed only what the chickens need for the day. That way the feed won't accumulate moisture over time. Feeders for when you can't be home or on vacation short term use only. I wouldn't mind a PVC feeder that allows you to close off the open area when feeding time is done that stays in the coop or run at all times. Than moisture will be cut off along with the rodents that want it too. Chickens don't need to eat all day unless they are young chicks in a brooder.

    I'm just curious, I've seen a lot of these videos, but what problem are you solving here? What is the advantage of this over a traditional metal chicken feeder? That reducer pipe is genius by the way.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      + wandering308 - There is no wasted food at all. The food doesn't get thrown all over the ground, the food doesn't get wet or get wasted because it stays trapped in nooks and crannies in the old style feeders. The food stays clean and edible. The longer 4" pipe you use the more feed you can put in them at a time, I'm in the process of building a new fence and when I do I'll change my tubes over to 4' tubes which will probably hold an entire 50# bag of feed. They are made of 100% food grade material, (safe for chickens safe for you.) I currently top all my feeders off every Sunday. Another problem that you can solve is depending on your setup, you dont have to go into the coop to put feed in the feeder. I have other videos showing where I use these feeders to feed two day old chicks, full grown chickens, ducks, cats and even our chihuahua. Thanks for the comment on the reducer. DEAD EYE DUANE

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It allows just a small amount of feed to come out to the area where the chickens or ducks or whatever eat from.
      I have better videos showing exactly how to build it and what it looks like full of feed and everything.
      Exactly how the reducer makes it work as it works.
      It is a perfect feeder.

At 1:04 & 2:30 - Are you sure that's not a 3 1/2" to 1 1/2" reducer? I don't think it would fit INSIDE the 4" Tee if it is also 4". Although I could be wrong.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Nicholas Prokup - No they do not. It's really simple, as they eat, more feed falls to replace it. I have been using these for years and I have had no problem at all with a chicken picking a piece of feed out and putting it down only to get an identical piece of feed. Thanks for the question.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Nicholas Prokup - I have had by trial and error, many setups over the years but I have always had a very similar setup to my final feeder. I have never used a Y. The T with a rain guard "or roof" has been my design from the beginning, I just had to adjust the amount of feed coming out and the amount of feed I wanted to be laying in there available to eat "hence the piece of plastic on the upside down drain". I don't know how easy it would be to scatter from your feeder but it would be very hard with my design. They can't get their feet in mine, at least I've never seen one try, although all kinds of animals can get their heads in to eat. Not only do I have a in depth video on exactly how to build this feeder, I also have videos showing Baby ducks and chickens eating from these, I also show cats and dogs eating from these. I use these for all my animals.

      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      + Lucy Boyle - I'm very sorry, I don't understand exactly what you are asking by "the cover on the bottom". Please rephrase.
      The way I keep the cat feeder from toppling over is I bungee cord it to the 4X4 beam on my porch.
      The way I keep the duck and chicken feeders from toppling over is I zip tie them to their pen. At one point I had a way longer one and I used a clothes hanger. Thank you for your question, I will be glad to answer anymore questions you may have. These feeders are great, I've been using them for a long time and they are perfect.

      The cover on the bottom of the chicken feeder is like a vent cover and the top one is a solid cover and I want to know why not use the same cover as the top in the bottom. The chicken here are free range and I want to know how you would keep it from toppling over. Thank you.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + Lucy Boyle - I used trial and error to come to my final feeder design. Early on I did use a cap on the bottom also but that allowed way too much food into the feeder where the food stayed there forever and could go bad. The way I put a drain cap turned upside down with a circular shaped piece of plastic on the top of it allowed the perfect amount of food in to where the ducks couldn't make a mess and the food pretty much gets eaten as soon as it comes out the chute. The food stays dry, comes out clean and sanitary and the feeders never need cleaned even though you can take them apart and clean them anytime since they are only pieced together with no glue.
      Perfect for free range chickens also, I have whole corn in one feeder, cracked corn in another and egg laying mix in the last. They walk around eating grass a lot, but we feed them our vegetable scraps and they have the choice of whatever food they crave. We get 1 egg per bird per day almost every single day. You could clothes line one to a tree or whatever is in the yard. We are in the process of building a 10 foot steel fence where I'll zip tie them to 4X4's and I am thinking about going back to 10 foot feeders. I'll put a video up if we do. Thanks again

    Why not simply cap the bottom?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the food fills up too much and has the potential to rot. This way as they eat the food , new fresh food comes out. That was one reason I was experimenting with the little notch cut out. ( but as I said in the video, you don't need the notch, it works perfect as is.)

      @@ipodsynca707 I think I understand what you're saying...the ice cream thing makes a more shallow floor on the inside and the drain doesn't function as a drain, per se, but functions to hold that floor up high so the feed doesn't get too deep. Am I corrrect? Great design BTW!

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@romdos11 You are correct.
      Also, not only does it allow only a small amount of food to come down so the chickens completely eat all of so the food stays fresh and doesn’t mold, it also keeps the food up off the ground to prevent it from getting wet if you live in that type of area.

      Being a “no spill feeder” wouldn’t be the only reason to make this feeder. I love this feeder because it’s vertical and therefore saves space in the pen. Also, I personally don’t like seeing bowls or buckets laying around on the ground. It looks messy. This feeder helps keep things organized and cleaner. Also, this man provides multiple types of feed for his chickens at all times so it makes sense for him to do it like this. It’s an excellent idea and not a waste of money.
