    I love it , but do you get rodents eating out of your feeder?

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. They cant get in the pen.

    • @swissmaid

      Why can'/t they get in? I think they can jump higher, then the outlet.

    Great idea for a feeder! Are you still using this feeder a year later? Have you made any modifications to it since you first made it?

    • @markellyfarm

      Yes we are but kelly wants to make all the holes the same size i made for the rooster because the hens prefer to use his.

    Great tutorial for the feeder! Thanks! I made one similar. As far as the feed in the middle that might not get used, to remedy that, I found a very large funnel and plugged the small part of it, then fastened it large side down to the bottom of the trash can. It seems to be working pretty well to guide the feed toward the feeding ports.

    Invert a mixing bowl or put a basketball in the center. The food will be diverted to the sides.

    Would an inverted funnel push the feed out in the bottom?

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would work great!

    What about mice and rats.

      They cant get into the coop. Very tight. Kelly designed it bulletproof.

    Not sure why anyone complains about the free practical math lessons, skip if you don't want it.
    Met so many people that can't read a tape measure or convert decimals.
    I grew up in building trades, sometimes I forget others have never needed those skills before.

    Thank you, you did great coverage on everything I was thinking - especially the part on the scraping chicken feed out and what about the sections of feed they cant reach. Subscribed just to help the channel

    Personally I don't like those type of feeders, because they zre not natural to chooks feeding habits. They love to scratch for food. And I am sure the mice and rats can still get at the food. Am I wrong?

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mice and rats cant enter our coop. Kelly designed it like fort knox. Kelly gives them treats and lots of things to scratch for. We did it so they cant drag the food out of the feeder. Our consumption went down by 75%. It also allows us to leave for a few days.

      @@markellyfarm ahh, so your chooks are in prison? Why this type of feeder then? Surely, they would eat everything off the ground?

    What is the diameter of the street elbows you are using? I am trying to build a 4” tube feeder but after you add up all the different parts you need, your design looks much less complicated, less expensive (those 4” parts are spendy) and easier to dump a bag of feed into. Great video!!!

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      2 inch street elbows. The chickens are using them with no problem. My rooster however needs a larger one because of his comb. Im installing a bigger one for him.

    Thank you! Great video; lots of good details. Have you had any problems with rodents getting into the feed with your design? What do you use to block the holes?

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The chickens would get the rodents first. Lol. We dont have an issue due to kellys coup design.

    How do you control how much they eat

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You dont have to with chickens. The bigger thing is keeping them from wasting food because if they are able, they just keep dragging food out, thinking there might be something more.

    Sorry, it looks beautiful, but there's extra work needed in it, I don't suggest anyone with this design. It defeats the purpose.

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Defeats the purpose of what? It’s literally zero waste. The only changes I’d make after using it a year and a half is to use all larger PVC and to caulk around them to seal out moisture when it rains. We’ve had no issues with it and I’d definitely recommend.

    • @morrisfam8
      @morrisfam8 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am ready to build my garbage can feeder but you mentioned after 1 year you would change to larger PVC Street Elbows. The video showed 2", street 90's. What do you recommend now? Also you mentioned a new height / position fo the holes since the ladies are using the roosters higher opening. What is the new height for the ladies and Rooster?@@markellyfarm

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would put them so that the inside portion is about an inch from the bottom. Another subscriber recommended putting an inverted funnel in the middle, which is a great idea. I used 3in for the larger one.

    • @markellyfarm
      @markellyfarm  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You also need to put the feeder on a riser sobthe holes are a good height. Ours is still working great.

      We just have dirt. If it gets muddy, Kelly will throw the dry shavings from inside out there to keep them out of the mud.
