    Me and my son just finished building a chicken coop & run at his house. I have been looking at quite a number of feeder builds on YT and really liked your build the best. So, I made two of them today and wanted to say thanks for posting this video! 👍👍🐓🐓

    I think I have watched 30 vids on the PVC feeders this was by far the best design. The tapper back on the feeder hood. #1. THE BEST YET.
    The 2" downspout was also the longest I have seen. keeping the food lower in the tube for less waste. Nicely Done. Thanks for the vid

    Thank you!! I live in Florida and it rains everyday in the summer. My mom has chickens and she feeds them in a pan on the ground. She loses a lot of feed and then she forgets to feed them somedays too (she's got memory problems). I'm going to make one today. I couldn't find a drain so I got a 3" cap that will fit and if I turned it around and pushed it in, it made a tight fit and higher floor like you had. I'll try it out today. Like you said, I was fitting it all together in the store. I'm excited to try it out and see if it can solve a few of her chicken feeding problems. Thanks again.

    Simple solution that seems super easy to make. I also like the fact that I can use these spring/summer/fall outside in the run with pipe strap to hand and then come winter unstrap and move into the hen house. I also like the idea to build a shortie for crushed oyster and grit.
    Thanks Duane for the step by step instructions.

    Thank you for the idea and guide video. This is just what I was looking for a small "brooding tractor" house I built. What I really like is that 4" silo tube can be replaced with bucket or other reservoir if want more volume with less height! Great for a prolonged "away from home" where refilling may be an issue for short silo.

    I'm definitely making this type for my hens. I've looked at several ideas and this is my favorite! My only mod would be a way to fill it outside of the run so I don't need to go in. I guess I would only need to cut an opening in the fencing and add an elbow or angled piece 👍🏻

      + Ryan Dunbar - You are exactly right. You can have a 5 or 6' 4' pipe that you can put most of a 50# bag of feed in at a time.
      The new fence that I am currently building for our chickens and ducks is 10' tall. (Mainly for our swimming pool project) I am going to have a 10' pipe on it.

    + Jordan Henry - Yes Jordan normal PVC ( Poly Vinyl Chloride ) is Food Grade. We all use PVC to eat and drink everyday. Large spoons, spatulas, cups, cutting boards all kinds of things in the kitchen are made from PVC and aid us in preparing food everyday, also most of the pluming in your house is also PVC piping, so every time you turn on the water to prepare food or get a cold drink, it is more than likely coming from PVC. Thanks for watching and these feeders are great, I have two other videos showing a very detailed build of these feeders and also how all kinds of animals can eat from these feeders like baby chicks, full grown chickens, ducks, cats and even our chihuahua.

      + Mickey Romeo - I would think for sure quail will eat from them, I have youTube videos on here where you can watch two day old chicks eating from them very easily.
      Buy water nipples, they are great. That is one of the only two ways I water my animals. Again I use PVC, totally clean totally sanitary and the water doesn't get so hot because in the summer because the white PVC refracts the suns heat. And again with my waterers I do not use glue. That way you can take them apart every once in a while and give them a good cleaning. They may leak when you first put them together, but the animals drink from the leaks and the leaks stop on their own.
      Thanks for the comment Duane

  • @dianekistner7650

    Duane, I love this. Pure genius! I'm so glad to know you can also use it with chicks. I'm getting my first chickens (well, I had a few about 15 years ago, but it's like it's all new again now). I plan to brood them in the snap-lock coop I've gotten for them (inside the house, of course, with the roof off) and I'm excited that I can start them off with one of these. I wonder: Would this design work for water, too, if you use a cap on the bottom for the waterer? I'm going to start nosing around the rest of your videos to see what you've come up with for that.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Diane Kistner - Thank you, your kind. Yes, I have made something similar to this for watering my chickens however I disassembled it.
      Chickens and ducks aren’t sanitary enough to have water out in the open for them.
      I do use PVC pipe.
      My reasons,
      Totally sanitary
      Totally food grade
      Stays cool even on the hottest of days because white does not attract the sunlight to heat the water.
      Google poultry watering nipples.
      Use the screw kind.
      The kind that leaves the water now is not as sanitary and allows the water to get hot. Just use the cheap kind.
      Hope this helps. Duane

    Great idea. But why the stated drain on the bottom with the piece of Plastic? Why not just a Cap on the bottom?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      + bjquilts29 - I have built a ton of these over the years, each time improving the last. I tried a cap in the beginning and there was about three inches of food laying in that space that never gets eaten. For the health of my animals and the quality of the eggs we eat, I didn't want any food to lay in that space and rot or get moldy. The upside down drain and piece of plastic eliminates that space.
      Here is an example video of how great these feeders work. They are great for chickens, ducks, turkeys,cats, dogs and almost any other pet you may have.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, these feeders are great. You can build them as big or as small as your application requires.
      As far as your waterers go, My suggestion is buy poultry nipples and use 4" PVC. The water stays cool because it doesn't attract the sun, they can hold a lot of water, and the nipples doesn't get stuck open (to waste all your water) or stuck closed (where your birds can't get the water they need. Have fun.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      + nwowen - I think one of my videos show me making this angle.
      I use the side of a grinder. I lay the T right up against the grinder and it just melts into a HOT ball, I WAIT a few seconds for it to COOL and it peels right off, DON'T GET BURNT. it doesn't take that long, then I repeat the process. It works perfect. It makes a very smooth edge. If you can't use the side of a grinder, You could use a sanding wheel, a belt sander or what ever else you have at your disposal. I've made many of these and I find the side of a grinder is the easiest and makes the smoothest edge.
      thanks Duane

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Debra K Slate - I started making these feeders years ago. Before I started taking place of feed with the drain and piece of plastic, there would be extra food that the chickens couldn’t get to so they could eat it and the left over food would start to rot in the feeder making me have to disassemble and clean the feeder.
      Even though I do not glue these and they are easy to disassemble and clean, by me placing the drain piece and plastic in there, the chickens are able to get to every piece of food making the feeder much more clean and sanitary without me having to clean them.
      I have a few of these videos on TH-cam, just making sure you know you can put as long of a tube on this feeder as you need, meaning you only have to fill the feeder once a week.

    do you think it would work with a double tee as well?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      + Nicholas Haskiell - Yes it will work, but I wouldn't do it if I were you. The birds won't fight to eat. Since there is food there 24/7 it is actually hard to ever find even one bird eating. If I wan't to make a video to show people how the animals eat from them, I have to purposely run them out of food for awhile. I would build a second one instead to offer a different variety of food for them. Just for my birds, I have one feeder with whole corn one Feeder with cracked corn one feeder with egg layer pellets one feeder with egg laying crumbles and one with Grit, I've been thinking about making another for ground oyster shells but we get an egg a day by every chicken minus one usually. Our pekins lay every single day. We have two Pekin Ducks, six Rhode Island Reds and five Buff Orpingtons and in the beginning they all ate from one feeder and you would never see two trying to eat at the same time. (I would guess) one feeder would feed 25 birds.
      If you have watched any of my other feeder videos, the reason they are all trying to eat at once is because they went without food for awhile for the purpose of making the video.

      + Monte Beemer - TH-cam keeps deleting all my comments that I have on my videos so I hope you get this.
      First - that's great that you own and operate a Mom and Pop business.
      My wife and I also own and operate what we call a Mom and Pop business. It is a General store built in the 1800's.
      It's TH-cam channels name is iShop General Store. Check it out, there are a few old photos on there.
      Second - The cut. I am a very picky person. these feeders work so good, I feed all my animals with feeders like them.
      Ducks chickens cats even a chihuahua, and they work with all different sizes of foods. All my cuts are so smooth and so perfect so there are no edges to bother our pets. I have a bench top grinder with an abrasive grinding wheel on it that I grind the most of it off with, then I smooth it up. The grinding wheel takes it off very fast just make sure you have your shop vac zip tied close and turned on so you don't make a mess. I only grind to get close, then I take my time finishing it off smooth as can be. I have three different videos on there showing my Feeders and how good they work. Thanks for the reply Duane

    What store did you find these parts at? I couldn't find the 3inch to 2 inch piece and the one store only had the black 4 inch pipe. I will be looking online at a few other stores to find who has these pieces. So I have the T, The cap, the drain. I should already have a 2inch pipe around here.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have bought them at Carter lumber, Lowes and Home Depot. Those are my local stores and they all have them, you might have to screenshot the picture on your phone or let them watch the part of the video so you get the right parts.
      I would think every store would have them.
      P.S. I would fit the pieces together while in the store if I were you, I always do. The reason I do is all the parts aren't 100% the same size, you may have to try three or four different ones to find the perfect fit. If you don't do this you may have to do a little sanding when you get home, no big deal I just thought it was worth mentioning. I do not glue anything together so you can take it apart if you ever want to clean it or if you want to change anything like change from a chicken feeder to a cat feeder or put a larger tube on it so the food lasts longer. Also in one of my early videos I notched a square out in the center feed tube, do not do this, that is one of my earliest attempts and it is not necessary, you can take one feeder and lower the tube for small crumbles and raise the tube for large cat food. Hope this helps. You will love them.
      Duane

    • @dianepatterson5506
      @dianepatterson5506 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I finally found most the pieces. Just one more to pick up. If you don't have the ice cream buckets to cut out, would it still work with plastic lids? I found some of those lids that go on to cottage cheese or sour cream containers that look like they will cut out really well.

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      + Diane Patterson - Any of those will work perfectly. We reuse and recycle here so anything we can repurpose we do. We have ice cream buckets available so that is what we used. The reason for that particular part of the design is so there is no excess food that can possibly stay in there and get old. This way they eat very low, like in nature they like to scratch peck and eat off the ground, but there isn't a bunch of excess food in the bottom that just stays there. Duane

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Benjamin Warner - Did you make the floor exactly like I did? The reason I make the floor like that is so there is very little food in the tube and the chickens eat it all and nothing goes to waste, no mold. Maybe you have it adjusted a little too high, maybe you didn’t push the adapter down far enough into the actual feed tube and it’s allowing too much food to drop down. I hope this helps. Duane294

      @@ipodsynca707 Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, I made it as close as I could to your specifications. They eat all the food (I don't give them much), though isn't part of the design to be able to give them multiple days' food at once? Either way, that's besides the point for me, because they eat all the food I give them. The mold gets so thick in the tube that eventually the food can't even pour down! It's a strange situation.

      @ipodsynca707  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can’t believe it’s not a perfect fit.
      I have never had this problem.
      I never glue mine in, that way I can take them totally apart rearrange them make them bigger “the tube feed” or clean them if they ever need it.
      Can you just lodge a piece of plastic between the drain piece and the bottom of the feeder to keep it in place so you don’t have to glue it?
      That’s what I would try but if need be you can glue it, I know lots of people have.

    Like the idea, how many chichicks to 1 feeder plse?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on if you’re feeding them laying mash or whole corn, how much you feed them and how long your tube is.
      Roughly 15 if you feel it every day.
      They are great, I love them.

    Do you think this would work for a cow?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris devito - no, a large dog can’t even eat from these. I have a Chihuahua that it’s from one and all my cats, chickens and ducks eat from them, but too big of a dog would have too big of a head, not alone a cow.

    Does it sit high enough for an adult duck to access the feed or would i need to raise it up a bit?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      + Ed Pereira - By nature both Chickens and Ducks eat right from the ground so it is very natural for them, you do not have to raise it at all.

      Thank you. I got my first three little ducklings two weeks ago, wasn't sure about when they get bigger. They seem to be growing everyday :)

      + Ed Pereira - What breed of Ducks did you get? Ducks make wonderful pets. (The eggs are a bonus.)

    • @edpereira1908
      @edpereira1908 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got them from Tractor Supply but they didn't know the breeds. From what I can figure, one is a Pekin, one is either a Mallard or Rouen and I can't figure out the third one. Its yellowish brown with a darker colored beak, might be a Welsh Harlequin but I'm not sure.

    How do you protect against rodents at night? Do you remove the whole thing?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quentin Bengel - I leave it in the same place all the time.
      I live in Ohio.
      I have heard and it’s been proven to me, chickens are the best mousers of any animal, cat, snake etc, and chickens keep all the bugs eaten out your yard, ants mosquitoes fleas anything.
      What state do you live in and what do you worry about at night?

      @@ipodsynca707 Im in North Alabama and will have ducks first. Once I get chickens i agree i dont think rodents will be a problem once I have chickens but while I only have ducks I think the field mice will be eating the feed dry.

    What about squirrels getting in ?

    • @ipodsynca707
      @ipodsynca707  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris devito - I think if a squirrel was brave enough to get in with the chickens, the chickens would tear him up.
      But I can’t tell you for sure because we don’t have any squirrels around here.

    I can see the benefit of this type of feeder for your chickens and ducks, but your cats must hate the sensation of their whiskers touching the sides of the feeder.

      No, I have never had a problem.
      I have a piece of info for you.
      A chicken is one of the best mousers you will ever see.
      Research it, it is very interesting.

      + Karin Jonczak - Your welcome and thank you for your comment. My family was watching videos of all our animals eating from these so I am hopefully going to make one video of them all and load it soon to show everyone how all the animals love them. Duane

      + Karin Jonczak - I put a few videos together of our animals eating from these feeders when they were babies, My boys got such a kick out of them my wife said I should upload them for others to enjoy. It also shows how young animals can be and eat from these. These are the only feeders I use. This was one of my prototypes, so that is the reason you see the packing tape, I didn't know they were water tight without tape in the beginning and I knew I wasn't going to glue them so they could be taken apart for an occasional cleaning or for re-modification. ( Longer or shorter tubes ect. ) Here is the link th-cam.com/video/IKFNZLCgTg4/w-d-xo.html
