Just rode my Knapton twin for the first time last weekend. Wow. Not the greatest of conditions but found spots in runs with snow I trust to really feel the radius. Board is heavier and really had to work at first to ride her but got used to it. I switched from the board I learned on so I’m really enjoying the new experience. Appreciate your videos!
:). Good to hear. And hopefully that feeling of 'work' erodes quickly! If it's icy, there isn't much you can do other than work, otherwise, tilt the hell out of it and find the effortless 'circles' it'll make on the radius in relation to the edge angles your hitting. 😎❄️🏂❄️✌️
Ryan, my bromance for you just keeps going stronger… 😂 I spend time meditating, and visualizing my riding as well. I actually do it for a lot of things, it’s really really helpful
Heaviest boards I've ever had. It sounds funny to appreciate it... but that's what it takes. Years ago I was on the 'lightest' board on the market. That was my very first TH-cam video. I enjoy my technical riding in that video... but I would just feel bored on that now. Tilt the hell out of the new board and enjoy the glide. :D
You should know at a little resort in Michigan called Caberfae Peaks there's at least 5 of us with Knapton Twins. It's real fun to see someone else on one, easy to spot someone carving like that!
it'd be cool if you recorded a run on Strava and threw it into a vid. both the overhead view of carves and the speed data would be super helpful. love your vids man i've progressed insanely fast with your help!
Is anyone else only getting the audio in one side of their headphones once the intro was over? It's like the camera was recording in mono audio. Other than that, great video as always Ryan. Today is my first day out on a new wide board (not a Donek unfortunately...next board is for sure going to be one though). My stoke level was already high to get out finally, but now it's twice as high after hearing some great messaging from a great teacher.
Thanks for the feedback! I wasn't sure what someone else meant by their 'right ear' comment. I was using a wireless microphone that I'm new with, so i gotta look into some settings stuff.
This is my first season on my new custom donek. I LOVE IT. I'm running a 157 with 30.5 waist and 10.5m sidecut. Ive got 6 days on it, love it, and I'm already thinking about my next donek.
Totally new sensations huh!? :D Hopefully the bump up to a 10.5m radius wasn't too much of a struggle. With having ridden traditional boards for so long, my first jumps up to 8.7m was a bit of a game changer, but the next increase to 9.8m was the most challenging. My body was just so accustomed to the smaller lines, and I wasn't familiar with hitting high edge angles early in the turns. The next jumps to 12m, 13, 14.5m ect were easier because I kind of knew what to expect and how to manage it. Nowadays the most difficult part is keeping my switch riding aggressive enough to handle the larger lines. It's brings a smile to my face to even think about. It's an amazing process, and I'm lucky as heck to be given the opportunity.
Ryan, what are your tips on poor condition days? Chundery, choppy, wet, skied out, challenging snow ... Do you still work on carving? Love your vids, bought a Knapton Twin and it's awesome!
I get more and more selective to the areas that work throughout the day. Generally the flatter terrain holds up longer. And there's some areas that are more difficult to get to that last longer too.
The big thoughts I have... You'll instantly notice how crazy wide it is vs anything previously. Even down to just getting off the chairlift, the thoughts should be "Ok, wow, my edges are way out there" (toeside / heelside). Next, its not worth trying to ride it like you've ridden other boards. So the thought goes to "how do I take advantage of my edges being way out there". I myself was slow to take advantage of the first 27.5cm width that I had a different company build for me. I didn't have a nice blueprint to work from, so I just didn't know enough... but the aggressive thought is "TRY to boot out" (evenly with both bindings)... and if you do boot out, really try your best to recognize the edge angle you were at, in relation to the slopes snow conditions and your body positions. It sucks to 'max out' and 'boot out', but with doing that from a low center of gravity, especially during the transition phase of the turns (knees extra bent during the transitions), you can find how much you can actually 'push' the board away from you (the board should stay on it's same line it intended to), and you'll find you can project your mass to the next turn extremely efficiently. :D
@@Dark_side9999 It's best to think about what we really want out of a board. 😎🤟. They are more expensive. Especially when adding personalized graphics and such. ❄️🏂❄️✌️
I gotta add more since I'm passionate about it. The man behind Donek is a genius. He realized long ago, that it was extremely difficult to 'stamp out' boards and actually have them optimized even close for any specific rider. So many factors. What Paul Schmitt is to Skateboarding, is what Sean Martin is to snowboarding. This includes for high level alpine racing boards, BX boards, etc. He understands physics of snowboarding and is an engineer... So he created a functional and cost effective way to truly customize the specs in almost every imaginable way. I seriously feel like the luckiest person on Earth to have ended up working with them and not being limited on what exact specs I can have built for me. Prior to Donek I was paying another company build me custom boards, but their presses were maxed out, and couldn't build me any wider. Sean knew there was a need for that and designed beyond what traditional width presses can do. There is still limitations based on width / radius / length, but its already at an entirely new level. SomeDreamsDoComeTrue
@@RyanKnapton I'm looking forward to the width, for sure. I've been riding a Lib Stump Ape, which is a wide board but just not built for this kind of riding - and I've still got heal/toe overhang with my size 12 boots. ;) Your recommendations as well as those from Donek as far as specs gives me a great deal of comfort, but given its my first made-to-order board I recognize that there might be a chance is not the 100% perfect board *for me*. But you've got to start somewhere and given I don't live within range of a demo it was time for me to just go all-in and take the plunge. Looking forward to riding (taming?) this beast. :D
I saw Mountain Creek NJ had to close for a day and reopen after blowing overnight. At least there's consistent conditions and grippy cord indoors at Big Snow. Hope y'all get some cold temps & good runs soon. 🙏
Doneks are great boards but the one thing preventing me from buying one is there is no option to add 3BT, it is a technology on Bataleon boards. I have the newest Bataleon Whatever 159W and it actually has a 271 waist width 318 tip tail width. The 3BT is sooo fun to ride it is like nothing I have ever ridden before, I can't describe it. It is the one non gimmick technology for me, and it includes super high camber too
I've ridden it. It sucked. I rode it for a TV show and that was part of the gig. The interface between edges was so slow and loose compared to a stiffer end, cambered board. It was even gross getting off the chairlift. I kept having the thought of 'how do I find my balance on this???'. I love being ultra positive, but this profile board shape was one of the worst experiences I've ever had outside of injuries.
@@RyanKnapton I have the 2023 Whatever model and it’s completely different to even the 2022. But yeah it seems like you hate 3BT 😂 It works so well for me and all the other intermediate riders I know, even for carving. But if you don’t like it, you hate it, I don’t blame you there’s others out there in your boat. The benefit is having a catch free full positive camber board. For me personally, 3BT edge to edge is the fastest it’s ever been, and I’ve ridden great non-3BT boards in the past like the Marhar Lumberjack X Camber (try it out!!). Yeah your edge isn’t locked in on 3BT boards, but you’re still turning, have catch free butters, and can still carve…. somehow. It’s truly the weirdest balance ever and it took me a week of riding to go from hating it to falling in love.
Ryan, just received my Knapton twin today, stoked to try it out this weekend. I've been riding my Korua with ++ on the bindings. Do you have a recommendation for the binding angles for the twin?
Ryan, Josh, and I all ride 15/-15, and that's a good baseline/starting point. Stance width is also worth playing with too. Find what feels comfortable/efficient, and works best for you.
Hey Ryan! I’m just about to order a Kanpton twin! My concern though is at my local place I only get 3 linked turns per run. I’m still new to carving so can I change the radius while riding to get the most at small resorts but still have big turns when I go to bigger resorts? I’ve heard people say you can tighten up a turn but how much can you? Can you loosen up a turn also from starting small radius on a board with a single radius side cut? Currently on a 7.4 m board so will be a big change
Got any video of your riding? That can massively help with the discussion. Your seeing the situation pretty accurately... Small hills, no need for too big of radius. With efficient and aggressive techniques, it's possible to make larger radii into small 'circles', with hitting high edge angles early in turn, but it takes time to develop. Something like a 9m would probably be my suggestion for the first one, it will feel like a jump up! Just gotta tilt the heck out of it. The larger radii should be held off until you ride enough on it and internally 'know' you want your turns to last longer. If you're ultra athletic, already know carving techniques, and achieving them regularly, then maybe a bit bigger works. Conversely, I've seen a couple instances where the rider either has long term knee, or ankle injuries and has a limited range of motions, then the larger radii just doesn't work out. 9m is a beautiful place to start for most. I use to recommend 8.7, as that was my first jump up. The turns just flowed more than previously. It's seriously tough to really have an idea for what I'd recommend without seeing the turns you already make. The picture just isn't painted enough.
@@shofarsogood7504 Hey, I cant offer this to others for now, but since you took the time to make the vid, I want to help get the variables as correct as I can for ya, but I need to know about your own goals with your riding, what size hills or mtns you'll be riding, boot size, how good you're physically feeling, goals on getting slightly more aggressive vs. massively more aggressive with the turns etc... Are you able to DM me on IG I can't reply to everyone (which I hate, but its reality), but I'll look out for it.
The wide angle on your camera kinda makes me nauseas. Is the angle different than before? It's like the trees are dancing haha. Great boarding btw, love you vids.
Not necessarily, but on the higher end of carving, it's generally stiffer boards. I've carved a rocker rental board decently, but it's lower edge angle carving, at slower speeds on mellow terrain, otherwise the physics build up too much pressure and gets skiddy.
