      It was unfortunately a compromise to get climbing into the Olympic Games but it's better than nothing I'd say. I'm holding out hope that in the future for 2024 it'll be split up but we'll certainly see what happens.

      I'm sure it will evolve in the future very quickly in the olympics. I could easily see it go the route of gymnastics and track and field with separate and all-around competitions as well as individual and team competitions. Heck, you might even see disciplines added like some sort of relay or something. My point being that it is in its infancy as far as the olympics, but the sky is the limit on where it can go.

    Such a shame they are together. Someone like Ashima or Puccio who are great at lead and bouldering, can’t really benefit from speed climbing. I hope they don’t do it like knockouts rounds and the top speed climbers go to the next one. Such a shame

    • @stethoscanomaly
      @stethoscanomaly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not sequential knockout rounds. You get combined score from your placing in each discipline. What will actually happen is the best speed climbers will fail in early rounds because they'll score badly in lead and bouldering, all the qualifiers for the later rounds will be the best lead and boulderers and they just won't post very good speed times. It's a really stupid format. The whole reason speed is included is because the olympics is mostly about generating ad revenue and they believe speed climbing is more exciting as a spectator sport, but the way they have the format the speed climbing on offer will actually be lower standard than typical pro level because the only people who will make it through rounds will be lead and boulderers.

    • @Murdog83
      @Murdog83 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@stethoscanomaly I remember thinking this way too when I first heard about the format. After watching the World Championships I have changed my opinion. The podium for males consisted of a speed climber, lead climber and boulderer. That speed climber never finished last in any of the events in qualifying or the finals. Furthermore, he beat lead and boulder specialists in their own sport in each round. So much for the idea that speed climbers aren't climbers. They are climbers who just happen to be exceptionally good at the speed route.

      I do not believe that a lot of the "stars" from now like megos, ondra, hojer will appear there because of the speed climbing...most of the are to specialised already to take speed climbing also into their repertoire and most likely will not come to a competition they simply can not win :( I don't get it anyway why they took speed climbing in. It's not an attractive sport imho

    • @twifanly
      @twifanly 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm glad to say that in the climbing world champs going on right now, Jan Hojer (GER), Tomoa Narasaki (JPN), Adam Ondra (CZE), Jakob Schubert (AUT), Kokoro Fuji (JPN), and Kai Harada (JPN) are all competing in the combined finals. Jan, Adam, Jakob, previously exclusive lead/boulderers have taken on speed with gusto and are getting REALLY into it. Not to mention, other big climbers: Mickael Mawem (FRA), Sean McColl (CAN), Manu Cornu (FRA), Alex Megos (GER), Jernej Kruder (SLO), are definitely all competitors who are more than capable of competing in all three disciplines, but could not qualify for the combined world champs.
      Furthermore, for the women's combined, it's: Petra Klingler (SUI), Janja Garnbret (SLO), Miho Nonaka(JPN), Akiyo Noguchi (JPN), Jessy Pilz (AUT), and Sa Sol (KOR). All these women are either exclusive lead/boldurers who have gotten into speed. Not to mention, more women are getting into speed as well. Stasa Gejo (SRB), Alex Puccio (USA) for eg.
      I think more recently, there's been an increase in participation and respect for speed, with more previously exclusive lead/boulder athletes getting into it and really giving it a go due to the decision made for the Olympics.
      We can all agree that the previous names mentioned are all "big names" of the sport, and they all have a shot at medalling for the combined format. Not to mention, it's not the first time combined competitions have been a thing. It has been considered in the world champs 2016, 2014, 2012.
      I was like you when I first heard that it's gonna be a combined format for the olympics, and with so many changes to climbing rules and vernacular, it's kind of scary, yet also interesting, to see the ways the sport is going to change and evolve throughout the years in these competitions.

Currently most countries athletes are constantly placing PB in speed as they take on a new challenge. With only 2 golds available it was really the only choice to be all inclusive.

    I don´t see the problem in combined disciplines. lead climbing will be the middle ground for speed climbers and boulderers. Both are used to intense rather short power bursts compared to lead climbing. In lead climbing it will show how the climbers are able to combine their knowledge of technique and power management. The only thing I would like to see more are older climbers of 30 upwards. I don´t like the children dominated Olympics. Climbing embraces all ages. It´s the wrong message.

      Additionally, even to non-climbers, bouldering is going to be way more interesting to watch than speed. Speed will probably be a novel experience for the first few rounds but I can't imagine it getting as much love as bouldering or even lead.

    This is going to let everyone down. “Non-climbers” would love to watch speed climbing because its easy to understand and appreciate. Climbers love watching bouldering and lead for the minute difficulties and complexities that go into it. Non-climbers are going to find that harder to appreciate and I imagine they’d be pretty bored by it. Lumping all of the events together is perhaps a foot in the door Olympics-wise, but it certainly will not be memorable with how the events, scoring, and results go. But I feel like it is a dyno in the right direction- albeit an awkward one.

    • @salamandersaladman8483
      @salamandersaladman8483 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that clumping them together is the major mistake. Having elite speed climbers is much more entertaining for the general audience because if you watch those competitions what they do seems unnatural. Seeing a sprinter or a swimmer go extremely fast is cool and all, but if you watch those competitions it genuinely looks fake. I normally stick to bouldering but I've tried speed climbing and I can say that sport/bouldering climbers will look like fish out of water in an Olympic caliber event. As for bouldering I think it would also be entertaining for general audiences. They would probably have the setters set really dynamic and/or shouldery moves (which to be fair is what most climbing comps are doing) because bouldering allows for incredible highlights that could be used. The use of endurance focused sport climbers or speed climbers will dilute the appeal. I do think sport climbing should be left out for climbings first run because it doesn't have the same entertainment value, however I think that it could be brought in later Olympics. Climbing would best be implemented similarly to snowboarding was where new variations were introduced as more and more attention was brought to it. The key difference is that rock climbing is unlike anything most people have ever seen, so using speed and bouldering which have the most unbelievable feats of athleticism would allow climbing to become a popular event in the Olympics.
