Starship designs in Star Trek are iconic. They were also very interesting. Klingon Warhips always had a hunter bird design perfect reflecting their culture while the federation had a elegant but also vulnarable design which also reflects what they represent with their first derective and all.
Great point! I never thought about how the different cultures manifest in the starship designs, but you're right. I've never researched this, but I wonder what kind of designs were discarded before the ones were chosen that were used on the show.
Have just finished watching this as I worked nerdily doing my nerdy job whilst nerding out to your dulcet tones. Loved it. I can't believe people produced stuff like this. I guess it shouldn't surprise me given the number of specialised wikis and such which exist today online, but nevertheless, the effort that went into that is astonishing! Oh, and btw, you should give the new Star Trek Discovery a chance and get yourself back into the universe :) You'll get to see some lovely Klingon ship designs.
Mr F, apologies for the delay! Your reply escaped my notice last week. About Discovery, yes, I completely agree that I need to check that out. It hurts my old Trekkie heart a bit that there's a Trek show happening out there in the world that I'm not watching regularly. I'm not really in the mood to deal with another streaming service currently, so I suppose that I'm waiting for it to show up on Netflix. Looking forward to checking out those new Klingon ship designs!

Gaslamp ASMR TNG was in its first run when I was in high school, and it was my favorite. (I was totally in love with Jean Luc Picard.) Growing up, all of my older boy cousins watched the original series, so I thought it was really cool since, obviously, older cousins are minor deities. In the summers I watched the original series with them and loved it. Also really enjoyed DS9 and kinda liked Voyager, then I petered out. But Star Trek still holds a special place in my heart. Watching it as a teen, it made me feel like there was so much out there to explore, like anything was possible. I loved that there was a strong emotional and intellectual core to almost every storyline.
But did you like TNG from the very first? It first aired when I was a freshman in college, and we would all gather in the lobby of the dorm to watch it. I was very unsure about it at first, and it makes sense in hindsight, because I feel that TNG took a LONG time to find its footing with character and story. Even now, I'm mostly a season 4-7 kinda guy when it comes to TNG. I know that every new series goes through that settling process, but TNG had the added challenge of being the first to show us a "new" Star Trek crew and ship, so it was always going to get heavily compared and contrasted to what came before.
Gaslamp ASMR I always loved it, right from the start:) I actually used to listen to the audiobook of Encounter at Farpoint (the first episode), while I’d fall asleep at night. It was my ASMR back then, I guess lol. I tried to rewatch it recently, though, and you’re right-it did get better with age!
For the record, this was the video that first brought me to your channel! I was looking for Star Trek themed ASMR and came across this, but I also love old pocket watches and all the other stuff you tinker with, and your voice is really relaxing, so...I've stuck around watching everything (probably multiple times over at this point)!

Got SO excited when I saw the title of this! I love books like these, I've got a "health guide" one that goes through all the different types of biologies/sicknesses there are (well, probably not ALL of them) in the Star Trek universe. This one is so cool, and as always, this was super relaxing!
This is a fantastic video. If you have other fan-made in-universe manuals like this - or even official manuals - I'd love to see more! What I find fascinating about this manual are the aspects that were later rendered non-canon by authorized materials. For example, the change in design of the Enterprise for the movies did NOT result in a change in designation from Constitution class to Enterprise class in canon, but was referred to merely as a "refit" of the Constitution class. By the way, I'm intrigued by your brush pointer. It looks like a natural bristle brush suitable for oil painting. Are you an artist?
Your nerd mode is strong. ;-) Yeah, I’ve got a whole box of that stuff from back in the day. Tons of blueprints, plus the original Star Fleet Technical Manual, Medical Reference Manual, the Federation Reference Series, the Ships of Star Fleet, and even slightly “newer” stuff like Okrand’s Klingon dictionary. Nope, I’m not an artist, but I have a lot of brushes around. My Mom was into slipcast ceramics, and I have a lot of the brushes that she used in her shop. Thanks for the comment!
This is so cool! This magazine is so well done, and you've kept it in fantastic condition. I am reminded of the Historical And Technical Briefing book that came with the video game Homeworld, from 1999. It was official, not fan-made, but I can't help but think it was inspired by this Star Trek publication. I have a few videos of reading it, on my channel. In regards to your question about writing, and other creative outlets, I have done a fair bit of that over the years. I never wrote any fan fiction but when I was younger I would write my own original stories all the time. My problem was that I would write the introduction to a million stories but never finish them. One medieval fantasy story in particular, I hand-wrote 300 pages of, and even today I struggle to take my poorly-planned story and turn it into something respectable, but I am simultaneously too lazy to start from scratch, even though I have tried a few times. But certainly from the age of probably 6 or 7, up to when I was 18, I wrote a lot of fiction. And don't even get me started on drawing... I used to do a lot of that. Got okay at it, but was never great. Drawing maps was always my favorite though. But I always had to be creating. Over the years I created many original songs, poems, and short films. Nowadays it's mostly TH-cam videos, but I still try to record songs occasionally. Too many things to create and not enough time and motivation to do them. I think that's something many of us can relate to. Sorry for the ramble. Great video, and as always your prompts in your description are thought-provoking and nostalgic.

In regard to your original stories, I'm curious: Do you think that the creative "itch" is any more satisfied by actually finishing a story, vs. the "million intros" approach? Or are "starts" enough, given that every sentence is still a creation, still something that did not exist before? Thoughts on this?
Honestly, the starts are probably enough. Because as nice as it is to finish something, the first steps of building a world and a story can be satisfying as well. Definitely just creating something, anything at all, is worthwhile.

Even growing up I was never into anything so much as to write fan fiction, or subscribe to any publications etc., and it always intrigues me about those that do put their spare time into this sort of endeavour. To think that someone has sat there and drawn accurate illustrations of how a fictional spaceship would look... but then I guess it's no different to any other hobby (I go and play flat green bowls at the weekend and I am sure lots people see that as pointless).

Getting excited/motivated/driven by something creative, and then wanting to share your sympathetic enthusiasm with the world (or an understanding subset of the world) by doing something creative of your own. I've never been able to write or draft well enough to do anything like what we see in this vid, but I do remember creating a fan web page long ago for a TV show that I liked, back when I was learning HTML. And I remember being pretty driven at the time to put this little chunk of enthusiasm out into the world, but I can't really explain why, even today. Good to see you, RF! Hope you're doing well.

Her name was "Angellica Bell" and I also helped someone else with their fan page for "Honeysuckle Weeks".
Heh, I'm guessing fan pages are a common practice ground for web authoring! Of course I was doing mine by editing HTML code manually. Now with content management systems and web-based interfaces, I don't think the casual designer needs to learn actual HTML anymore, and can create a way better-looking page than I was ever able to muster back in the day. Progress! ;-)

It would take HOURS to get anything halfway decent. When I finally found Weebly.com, I was so happy, and have used that ever since for designing any websites I've wanted to do.
