    When this song was released in September of 1973, I was so broken hearted.
    In 1967, I fell in love with the prettiest girl in St. Charles High School. I was too scared to ask her out until our sophomore year. Life was wonderful throughout high school. We both went to the University of Missouri. Everything was fantastic. Then, during the summer session before our junior year, she fell in love with another boy. I was devastated. She wanted to date both of us. I tried to warn her that everyone said her new guy was a player. She claimed that he truly loved her. I was skeptical. But, being a fool, I agreed that she could date both of us. I didn't want to lose her. So, I shared her with him. For two weeks. Then, one day, we were headed to my dorm for some private time. About a hundred yards from Hatch Hall, I stopped and turned to her. I told her that I couldn’t do it anymore. She asked what I couldn't do anymore? I said that I could not continue to make love with her in the afternoon, knowing that she was making love to him in the evening. She warned me not to make her choose. She said that I would not like her choice. That told me everything that I needed to know. I kissed her, wished her well, and then said goodbye. I walked into Hatch alone. I did not see her or speak with her again for three years.
    That month, this song was released. Every time I listened to it…I cried.
    They were engaged in only six months. They were moving fast. The wedding was to be the following summer. The summer we had planned to marry. They were to be married in only fourteen months…unbelievable.
    The weekend before the wedding, he dumped her. He just walked away. He never loved her. He had used her for just one thing. She was devastated. For a brief moment, I thought we might have another chance. Then I remembered Thomas Wolfe's novel…”You Can’t Go Home Again”. I realized that we both had moved on. Thomas Wolfe was right. You can't go home again. I promised myself never to speak to her again. For both our sakes.
    Two years later, at Christmas time, I was at my Mom’s house back in our small Missouri town. The phone rang. Mom said it was her. Mom asked me if we were dating again. I replied, "No, Mom. We're definitely not dating. Trust me." I took the phone. She talked like we were old friends, as if nothing had ever happened. Remembering my promise to myself, I moved to end the call. As I said goodbye, she interrupted me to ask me to go to Midnight Mass with her. I was dumbfounded. I knew what she was doing. Since I was a former Altar Boy, she knew that her best hope was asking me to attend Midnight Mass with her. I froze. She asked again. And again. I just couldn't speak. Finally, she said, "Reid, please accompany me to Midnight Mass. Reid, please." After some more silence, I did say yes. When I went to pick her up, I saw the most beautiful woman in the world. When she smiled, I realized that I still had feelings for her. In spite of everything, I still cared for her. Two years later, we were married. 42 years together. One fantastic son. Lost her in 2019 after her four year struggle with breast cancer. My son and I miss her so much. I joke with him that it’s a miracle he’s alive because of the many twists and turns of his parents' courtship.
    Just before she died, she told me how she regretted picking the wrong boy in 1973. And how glad she was that we did eventually marry. I held her so tight. I had loved her ever since I met her on that first day of our freshman year of high school, in Mrs. Gray's homeroom biology class. She allowed me to walk her home later that week. By the time we reached her house, I was in love with her. Intelligent. Gorgeous. Kind. She was an incredible sweetheart. I knew that day that I wanted to marry her someday. At the time, I knew that was very unlikely. Very few people will marry their high school sweetheart. But, I did hope that it would come true... someday.
    Every time I hear this song, I remember how my world came to an end that September of 1973. The month this song was released. I so believed that the two of us would never pass this way again…together. Thank God I was wrong.
    I will always love you, Lynnett.
    Reid.

It was sad to hear that he will no longer be with us except in spirit and song. This song has always reminded me that time is passing by quickly and that one must not hesitate to take advantage of all that life has to offer.

    I'm a 67 year old man living in Iowa. These guys are lifetime Baha'is. Me, too. Never had the honor to meet Jimmy Seals, but I sang with the Tennessee Baha'i Choir in the late 80s, and sometimes we would rehearse at the home of Dash Crofts. Fond memories.

    • @gcharouhas
      @gcharouhas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In '73 I was a young American living in Guatemala. Several Baha'is lived there too and I became quite close to them. Bob Porter (and his wife Marci) were California transplants, now making their home in Central America. Bob had been a successful trumpeter and arranger in L.A and was now an in-demand player in the local recording scene. One of his sons, Robbie, eventually went on to have success on his own working with the likes of Carlos Santana. Also, Betty Zingali was a Baha'i working a the bi-national center in Guatemala City (which is where I worked as well). Wonderful folks who were there to witness for their faith. They all knew Jim Seals and Dash Crofts quiet well and spoke highly of them. Personally, I always felt their music was as close to pure divine expression as music ever gets.

    The first time I heard this song was at 1:35 AM driving home from Nashville TN. My older brother had just played his very first show on the Grand Ole Opry, we were in his Camaro with two other friends. I was driving and everyone was asleep. The message of this song sunk deep into my soul and it made me think of how important that very moment was, that night and what had just happened in my brother's life. It was AM radio and I heard it three more times before we made it home. When I found this , I was instantly transported back. Thank you Carissa Ciociola for this post!
