    Those Mesos are power hungry. They really liven up when you crank the volume and sound incredible! I installed them in my daughter's car and I love her setup. Nice tight, punchy bass from the components and the tweeters are not ear piercingly high. CT Sounds are a hidden gem, especially if you are on a budget.

    Adding MLV to the doors will help with sound depth and output!
    Also for setting gains…
    There are special tools (SMD DD1 etc) or cheaper options (Piezo buzzer trick, Voltmeter) to set gains properly by using tech and not the human ear. I’d recommend looking into those options and maybe adding a single slim sub behind the seats! That would seriously complete the sound system

    Today's "Like" moment was when you used the q-tip to paint the bare edges of the holes you cut for the speakers. Bravo! You might want to try some foam baffles behind the larger door speakers to see how that changes the sound. I love the idea of a slim sub somewhere. You can then high-pass the current speakers and let the sub handle the low duties. What about grills?

    Those door pods turned out sweet. I did that stuff as a job back in the 90s, you did a really good job with that. I'm sure everyone is going tell you, you need a sub, but if it sounds good it sounds good. There's only so much room in that tiny cab. You nailed it man.

    Love your professionalism and attention to detail with this build! If you do some sound treatment on the doors (cld tiles aka dynamat on the inner door skins, and mass loaded vinyl on the back of the door cards) the sound quality difference will be night and day! On the tuning side, once you get the time alignment settings dialed in it will be perfect.

    Set the HPF (high pass filter) in the head unit to 80 htz to keep from blowing your 6.5”. The cross overs that came with them will only cross over the top end frequencies of that driver so you need to set the bottom end from the head unit or by using the HPF on the amp if it has one.

    • @bradlycriswell1990
      @bradlycriswell1990 ปีที่แล้ว

      that wouldnt be a HPF, it would be LPF.
      HPF is top end frequency cut off.
      LPF is low end frequency cut off..

    • @steve_aintloud2994
      @steve_aintloud2994 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bradlycriswell1990 you got it backwards man. High pass let’s the highs pass through your filter. Low pass let’s the low pass through your filter. So whatever you set your high pass at, everything there and above it will play.
      It really helps when you see a graph like I do on my headunit when setting it. Seeing the slope and etc it’ll make it so you don’t make that mistake lol I always use to get those 2 mixed all the time tho

    Good video, but one thing about having a mid that low is loss of midrange. the mid should be higher up in the door or near the tweeter so they can be prominent and heard. Def set a crossover at 80hz and cut at 24db slope to drop the low frequencies out of it.

    Man, those pods came out nice. THe EQ should be set to compensate or decrease as needed. distortaion will happen when the amp sends a distrorted signal but this is depenant on the voltage the head unit puts out. my guess is that head unit puts out 1.5V clean 2.3Volts max but distorted. Ideally you want to know where the head unit distorts. I would also cross those over at 80hz. 55-65hz if you are not using a sub. In theory you want the 3" and tweet as close as possible and high up. Unless they play well off axis. Good job either way for a starter.

  • @jprock73

    Those 6.5” speakers are not designed to play 40 hz. You should use a 1000hz track to set the gains for them. Also, the gains are ALWAYS the first thing you set and you do it with no sounds creatures on and with a flat EQ.

  • @chrishuyler3580
    @chrishuyler3580 ปีที่แล้ว

    Door panels are a moist environment, make sure you protect the back of the speakers, and your MDF/partical board panels from any dripping rain water from the window seal. They make foam cups for that. Some sound deadener on the door panels will help too. Nice job on the pods, I was surprised how smooth they turned out without using body filler.

      Hey I'm rebuilding my 77 sr5 hilux at the moment , and of the main things I wanted to do when doing this rebuild was minimize as much outside sound pollution as possible. I don't plan on putting speakers in my doors , but what material is usually used internally in the doors to help deaden that sound ?

    • @chrishuyler3580
      @chrishuyler3580 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timothy2935 If you inspect modern door construction you will find a little goes a long way, but if you aren't concerned about weight, cover the outer door skin and inner door skin with dynamat or similar product. An additional layer of closed cell foam also helps but given the construction of these vehicles there may not be room for both. Covering the floor, firewall, and head liner will also help. You'll never get the interior as quiet as a modern car simply because window seals and glass thickness limits you, but it will make an improvement.

    try leaving the deck's eq flat, and the amp on full range. with the external crossovers that went into the kick panels you shouldn't need to mess with any of the deck or amp crossovers. all your adjustments should happen at the external crossovers and set the gains with a DD-1 or an osciliscope.

    • @notverystealthy9165
      @notverystealthy9165 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not correct. You still have to set the high pass filter. 80 hz is where you want it at. Keep eq on radio flat, turn the radio to 3/4 and set gains on amp.

  • @benjaminzhabari8047
    @benjaminzhabari8047 ปีที่แล้ว

    idk if you read the comments now but i can explain something that is kind of helpful to solve the "no distortion at full volume" thing. Set the headunit EQ to flat and turn the gain all the way down on the amp. Play a low test tone (40hz) and turn the volume up on the headunit until you hear distortion. Everybody says that you should have the volume to about 75% because it is common that headunits start to distort at that point. Some head units will distort even beffore 75% and in your case it is not distorting at all at 75%. when you hear distortion back the volume down 2 clicks just to be safe and never turn the volume up more than that, then set the gains on the amp by keeping your headunit at that volume while setting the gain and also max volume on your phone. keep turning up the gain until you hear it is starting to distort then turn it down a little bit until there is no more distortion. For the highpass filter i would suggest you check on the box the speaker came in and look at the frequency range it is rated for and then set the highpass according to that and maybe a little bit higher. For example if the woofer is rated for 20- 300 hz, set the highpass to about 30 or the bottom if your amp highpass filter can not go that low. Sorry for this long text but i just want you to get the most out of your system while still sounding good! really nice doorpanels btw!

    So. My two cents from a installer perspective. This is to help. Not taking crap. The Mids/Tweets you have (not the midbass) would have been better suited more forward in the kicks where crossovers are located with the tweeter. Or you could mount the mid where the tweeter is at currently and make a mount for the tweeter. I mean within 2 inches at most in proximity to midrange. This is to help with phase issues. Tweeter does not blend as it should with midrange further away in this orentation. A lot of people do not install 3 way setups correctly and work best when together in one area (Tweet Mid Midbass within inches of each other) You could mount the tweet and mid in the dash too. Better thicker guauge wire is key,However not nessicary. Spade terminals are awesome for crossovers. Not knocking the skill set at all. Just trying to help you sound much better. Speakers need to be as close to a "Triangle" configuration where you are in the center. Left Speakers , Right Speakers and you in the center far enough back where you complete the triangle to give you a soundstage and phantom image for "stereo!"

    I use to be a professional car audio installer. For small projects you should check out sunflash because UV hardens the fiberglass resin and it’s odorless.
    But for real audio you want the tweeter closer to your vocal driver to help with time alignment. You won’t need as much DSP to get the sound stage setup. I would have made kicks for the mid bass so you didn’t need to cut into those doors and I would have made pods for the a-pillars.
    Laminating resin is fine. I use both laminating and structural depending on the project. You can do overhead and upside down layup if you use the right resin for the project. I’ve used both polyester and grill cloth to lay up projects.
    If you don’t follow SMD Steve Mead you should check him out. He’s legit and not far from me.
    I’d throw in some SecondSkin in the doors, the floor, the roof and the back of the cab. I can’t even hear my 7.3 Diesel going down the road now after doing my F250. It’s a great product and they sell what’s called B-Stock which is miscuts or left overs from other orders. It’s the exact same product but much cheaper because they are not all the exact same size sheets. It will drop 20BD out of the road noise.
    Not sure what crossover slope is offered on that head unit but if it’s 16 or 24 I’d use that not the crossover in the amp because it will be far more accurate.
    If it’s 24 you could wire it active and not even use the passives.
    Overall this was a great project. Can’t wait to see this Yoda completed. I’ll follow ya.

    Pull the windows back out and put sound deadener in as much of the doors as you can.

      Austin, along those lines I’ve put dynamat/killmat on the back of my door card. Should help the audio and keep out some road noise too.

    You make a great job with the soundboard. But why do you use this black leather? Ok its more work, but why do you dont paint it black or you laminate carbon over the nice shaping Soundboard? You have make the full pre work for that. And you can make a improvement to the soundboard, drill smal hols in the back of the un used section and spray hard foam (the non expanding after spraying) in it. So you have one solid part. And it is stiffer from the out side, and it beware from cracks in the fiberglas (my brother works in a car hifi store).

    That bass is awfully close to the floor and to your clumsy friends boot heels so I hope you’re going to put a screen or a grate over top of it anyway looks awesome
