As a surfer I feel that it is my responsibility to show my appreciation to the Ocean by not littering and by cleaning up the litter when I can. For it's hard to repay such a wonderful thing that only give's and never asks for anything in return.

You're a white dude in an English speaking country - you aren't the demographic that pollutes. In my country we have Clean Up Australia Day, it's an exclusively white event, yet I've never in my life seen a white person litter here. We don't like polluting our homes. But people who come here think it 'keeps people employed' if they litter at least that's their cope argument when I confront them about it. We don't have a pollution problem, the foreigners invading our homelands do. I mean, look at this video for example. None of these photos are of the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch' - I cannot seem to find any evidence of it's existence outside of claims of microplastics. It makes no sense because I could picture it being real given China, India, Africa and South America each release 100,000 more pollutants into the ocean than the remainder of all nations combined. Each one. Releases more pollution than EVERY other nation combined. Can you imagine that? Yet their solution is always somehow to tax Europe, America, Australia, Canada, etc. Because somehow it's our fault they're dirty. Just like we have to pay a trillion dollars a year because people in sub Saharan Africa keep shitting in their water supply (for real, the charities are at least FINALLY admitting to this, when asked why they don't move to the 8 hour away water source they walk to they finally are conceding that if they do they'll just poop in it too).

Who even has the heart to dislike the fact that we are the ones that are killing our planet earth. I'm watching this for school and I'm only 12, but this breaks my heart realizing that we are the ones who are causing this mess. I feel so ashamed of myself for being one out of all of us humans that are doing this. My heart hurts seeing all these marine animals getting hurt. I'm so sorry, for being one of the people doing this to our home. I'm sorry...

My significant other works for a company called Bic graphics. Where he prints Tervis tumblers and cups. Turbos has come out with a new cup or tumbler that is made from recycled plastic from the ocean. They are trying to take the plastic from the ocean and make tumblers and cups but you can keep forever. Tervis is doing their part in trying to keep the ocean clean or cleaning it up by using the Plastics in the ocean to make the Tumblers. And, the money goes to help saving the ocean. The ocean always been my passion I am proud that he works for that company.

problem is not to clean it up, but what do you do with it? Put it somewhere on the land? Than it gets washed into the rivers -> oceans. You can't really recycle this stuff either. We made so much plastic we will literally drown in it.

the gyre is not like a huge island of plastic floating on the surface. Most of it's underwater. This video is the most recent study I've seen about it. The worst part of the microplastics is that is what's being eaten by the small sea creatures, which in turn are eaten by larger fish/animals - going up the food chain until humans are impacted.

Boys,boys,boys...no need to bicker. It simply boils down to this.If the governments of the world don't band together in a herculean effort----and I mean like yesterday--- to turn this thing around, and with the same urgency they would have if we were being invaded by aliens from another galaxy, were all dead.If we burn even close to the remaining fossil fuels that exist on this planet it is game over.Once the climate reaches the tipping point---and we are precariously close--- it's game over.Their is no stopping it.Venus was once very Earth like and then something went horribly wrong and now it is the most inhospitable place to hang your hat in the entire solar system. We live on a closed system with an infinite number of checks and balances.Throw just a couple of those out of sync and you create a snowball effect that cannot be undone. So go on hurling mindless insults, platitudes, and useless rhetoric at each other, but I'm here to tell you, friends and neighbors,we are in very real trouble and we better learn to work together pretty damn quick or none of your ego fueled arguments are going to much matter. "Think of the Earth as a living organism that is being attacked by billions of bacteria whose numbers double every 40 years.Either the host dies,or the virus does"---Gore Vidal.

totally emotionally driven hokum. I'm all for cleaning up the oceans, but quit contributing to the ignorance of humanity. Cancer is caused by dysfunctional metabolism, made that way by several reasons. malnutrition, malabsorption, acidic tissues.
That said, I want to build a self-sufficient floating island city dedicated to the clean up effort.

We need to understand that life is extremely rare and as the most
intelligent species of the planet, its our duty to protect every single
living organism from a non-natural death. The best case scenario is we
make space travel super cheaper and stop this by dumping the plastics on
other inhabitable planets or moons. Otherwise a time may come when we
will have to leave this planet and find another habitable one and the
latter case of finding another habitable planet is very less probable
    than the dumping one.

I saw this last night and was saddened,as I was thinking of it today I remembered something from when I was a kid.
We had paper grocery bags all bags where paper drink cups were paper or card board.
We did not have plastic trash bags we used the paper grocery bags for our trash, or no bag and washed our trash cans out. we had dish clothes not paper towels.
Then this all changed it seemed unstoppable, I remember the uproar over having to give-up our paper items.
This was not forced on us by greedy corporations or republicans out to make money on their stock.
This was being rammed down our throats by the new environmental movement of the 1960's, your parents and grandparents, yes plastic and styrofoam will save trees and mother earth.
Then it was go after Mc donalds and every other fast food place because they used styrofoam and paper bags, they should be using plastic, save mother earth!!!!!!!!!!!
The environmental movement are a bunch of mindless followers, who have never had an original thought of their own, always waiting to be pointed in the next full on assault of anything American.
Our paper rotted away , our tin cans rotted away but thanks to environmentalist who forced these items to be band or we will protest all of your stores, we have plastic, a disaster of you own making.

Plastic isn't too bad if used responsibly. The energy that goes into a single use shopping bag is like 800x less than into one cloth bag. Meaning you have to use that cloth one 800x times, if the handle rips at the 790th use then you've wasted resources. It's a balancing act.

First of all: That picture is from Manila Harbor and 2. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not a solid mass and you can´t take pictures of it, because its "made" of microxcopic pieces. And all of this is the real truth. Btw, the true about the size of it or should we call it the area...is..Texas size....

And most of it is below the surface of the ocean. At the worst parts of the garbage patch, there is about 200 lbs. of plastic and trash per square kilometer. But try telling that to idiots who insist that the garbage patch is a solid mass larger than Texas.

X box, you are on the right track of thinking. But it would take SHIPS the size of supertankers to process it. And a fleet of small ships to collect it for processing. Then, another fleet to get it to shore and recycle it. This is doable, but it would take trillions to clean it up. This would take a hell of a movement to get started, but would be worth every dime spent.

    • @dstreuber
      @dstreuber 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not positive, but wouldn't burning simply change the form and make the plastic particulates airborne, eventually drifting back to earth? I'm no environmentalist, but my kids did a science project on this. This thing is real, and apparently all the countries in PacRim contribute, and currents drift the garbage here. I agree with the approach, though. A few supertankers (like whaling vessels of 100 years ago) that collect, compress, and bale the debris, so it can be shipped to a single collection facility? There are chemical agents that can degrade the plastic. The scariest thing about all this (besides the ugly mess) is that it's beiung ingested by fish, and ending up in our food supply.

wheelie w It said it was twice the size of Texas. However the garbage is not a single patch within the gyre, it's actually scattered around on the surface; many of which has been disintegrated by ocean water and become smaller parts for the abundant zooplankton (crustaceans that eat plant-like plankton) to consume. I wrote earlier in another comment that plastics absorb toxins such as PVC which harm organisms. Essentially, plastics basically choke, poison, and fill up the stomachs of animals. Along with this, their dead bodies create more carbon dioxide let out into the air....

I disagree with much of this video. The problem is not plastic. If plastic garbage bags were not available what would be available? Trees? We've been through this years ago. That is why plastic bags came into use, to save the trees and forests.
The video reflects a short shortsightedness in thinking. Videos similar to this one are what I would call end of the world videos. It's not the end of the world or of oceans. The answer is to dispose of one's trash properly.

Its not just going to be me, I know there are people who care!! And I hope you are one of them,if no..then i hope this has shown you how bad its gotten and you are going to help in the road to stop this. Because if we really try we can do this.
