There's plenty to enjoy in Mononoke about the spiritual decline, decline of the samurai, industrialization, and the effect of guns. Personally, I feel like Ghibli movie's aren't plot driven, but are rather more enjoyable as an experience. The plots are nothing spectacular, but when the story unfolds with the visuals and the amazing soundtracks, that feeling of magic and nostalgia is what makes ghibli movies special.

that exactly why i cant stand them. 2 movies that i actually consider good are grave of firefly and ...mononoke, spirited away is good for a bit untill its not, the plot near the end when she goes to meet the other witch and somehow she has a thing with the boy is the most bullshit thing i have ever seen. It feels interrupt. Howl moving castle is the same but worse, everything just kinda happened out of nowhere, the thing about " oh you shouldnt care about plot, just enjoy the world" may i ask where's that come from?? or you make that up so the story can be good in ur eyes, cus seriously, if u dont want me to question things then stop writing a story that way. I swear if those shit were turned into live action, they would get laughed at. I pretty much enjoy the world and i kinda accept it but i jst cant accept the narration of it.

    • @samuelpemberton
      @samuelpemberton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@Patricio Escamilla Mues I have read and watched both, but to say one is shallow without the other is discrediting the skill it takes to actually do each one. A well written complex story is extremely hard to do, but so is making an extremely beautiful setting that comes to life.
And no there's not a whole bunch with both. A lot of people's idea of a well written story is just jumbled plot points, generic cast of characters. Or a setting that's been copy pasted for decades.

    • @samuelpemberton
      @samuelpemberton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@TheMinhthe This is just bad analysis then isn't it. Like I said I'm not gonna stop you from criticizing the flaws in Ghibli films. But to call it bad must mean it has no redeeming qualities, which isn't true. That goes for most movies, not only animation.
And the idea that every thing must be explained is not only bad analysis and critique but terrible writing. If it's not super important to the story it doesn't have to be told. You don't need to be told why and how everything happened/started for you to make sense of the plot in Howl's moving castle to understand the story. That's you lacking critical thinking to understand that it doesn't physically change anything going on in the movie, plot, or character dynamics so it's not a good critique.
Y'all could be questioning characterization, dialogue, actual plot points and their relevancy with the message of the story or plot but instead most of your complaints is very basic "it doesn't matter" answers.

You said it not super important to the story??? Which part is considered not important and which isnt ??. Sure, something can or maybe should left unsaid, unknown in story telling but does it have an answer?? If it has but does the story get better if they add it in or it get worse ?? depend but last time i check its not character development. Im not saying they need to show everything about Sophia or Chihiro for me to understand cus im pretty much understand those characters from start to finish, i just dont care about them. The reason i say the story doesnt make sense cus they tell the story in a very usual way, not anything unique or creative, just the sameshit and next plot just happens just like the creators too were tired of them and wanted to move on. Oh im sorry, u tell a story, u convey a plot in the most basic way, u make me care about it (even tho it not much) in the most basic way, but somehow u tell me to look at the movie in a different way?? Its not important?? Are you sure its not, cus im pretty sure the part that "isnt" important IS important. Im not sure if we r talking about which plot specifically. Others did it and they got critisized, somehow Ghibli got away with it?? Do i get what they mean? i do but feel nothing. It just want to tell u THE MESSEGE. Since im not here to watch a movie to JUST understand it i want to FEEL it, no pretentiously forced myself to feel, and dont u manipulate me with the music and acting or some cute animal dying, i want a plot, a sequense that tell me something in full, no cheating. if the messege is all i want i would rather read the summary of it in some youtube channel, not pay for it. That's the reason why people want explaination or should i say a presentation, a performence, a race, a match. What Ghibli did with their movie are just cheap tricks.

Already many people have explained why Ghibli movies, especially Myazaki's film aren't that good. Movies like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and even now, The Boy and the Heron suffer the same problems:
      - Story is badly written
      - Poorly developed characters
      - EXTREMELY rushed final act
      - Twists and reveals with zero proper buildup
      - So many plot holes
      - Writer sucks cause many of the problems that the movie faces he responds with, "Oh I can't answer that but its up to you! I TOTALLY had this planned when I was writing this!"
Seriously if this was ANY other movie or director, people would hate the movie into oblivion. But the second they see the name Ghibli and Myazaki, "OHHH ITS PERFECT EVEN THOUGH NOTHING MAKES ANY SENSE!"

Umm no, what he tried to say was that how differently Ghibli movies are animated from other anime. Ghibli movies are very much like Disney movies in the animation aspect. They draw frame by frame, which is not like traditional Japanese animation. Japanese animation are energy based. Like a still image of an arm looks as if it's moving if some action lines are added to the border. Anime studios are able to produce so many anime these days because of these techniques.

The thing is many of us hardcore ghibli fans don't really view them as movies in a normal sense. They're more like moving pieces of visual and auditory art. The story of a ghibli movie rarely takes centre stage, what's great is the sheer amount of visual and auditory porn you're blasted with!
From a movie standpoint many Ghibli movies are lacking, if you want to look at is as a movie version of art then they're brilliant. This is why they're so celebrated, because they do something that's incredibly difficult to pull off and that isn't done very often.
You can kinda put something like Koe no Katachi in the same box, since what's carrying these very "artsy" animated films are the animation and the sound and the interplay between the two. What's actually going on kinda takes a back seat.

Ghibli ending's are weird if you come at it from a Western point of view. The story's are rarely about just getting to C starting from A, but more about the journey B in between. The story's don't "end" the way a Western viewer would expect with a climax to the actions of the plot, but they end with the resolution of the internal struggle of the protagonists.

Somewhere a Japanese film professor is absolutely raging right now. Garnt's comment about how Ghibli is more Disney than anime is the whole point! Miyazaki never set out to create anime, in fact he was staunchly against it at the time and was a vocal criticizer of Osamu Tezuka who pioneered anime style as a way of cutting costs by reducing frames. Ghibli's animation technique is intentionally closer to Disney since Miyazaki worked at Toei animation before starting Ghibli, which was heavily inspired by Disney animation.

I discovered it about 2 years ago at the age of 17 and it was mindboggling to me how much better movies can be even though they seem like they're made for children. Ghibli are just fantastic at making films that feel like an adventure you'd experience to then wake up and let it slide to edge of your mind like a beautiful dream. I accept that many low paced movies of theirs seem too boring and uninteresting to enjoy for some people, but they're definetely worth a watch regardless

Regarding Miyazaki going out from the cinema, i just read a comment that explain it.
See this is taken out of context of the documentary itself to be frank. When the production of Earth Sea was green lit due to Ghibli getting the rights for adaption of the Earthsea novel, Goro wasn’t helming as director but another younger staff in the studio. It didn’t pan out and the production needed a director, so Suzuki, the producer of Ghibli put out the notion of Goro directing the film to Miyazaki. Which Miyazaki was fully against. Now his reasoning behind his opposition to Suzuki’s idea is more than valid and reasonable.
First, Goro hasn’t even worked within the industry, he’s a civil engineer and landscape artist. Second, Goro becoming director is using Miyazaki’s name to bypass every rung of the production which paints this action to be highly fucked up industry wise and a big fuck you to people who are within the industry working their asses off to be even considered a directorial position. Third, Miyazaki was one of those grass roots type of person who worked throughout his youth to be in the position he is, and yes experience does matter in how you are able to direct due to knowing each level of the production pipeline. I mean take a fucking minute to put yourself in the shoes of people working in the industry, some no experience man comes walking into your field without prior experience and is put in a position above you just because his father is one of the industry big name. Really it wouldn’t sit well with anyone.
At this point ghibli was a prime center of attention in Japan where you had media attention in you 24/7, parading the studio to even rival Disney as a studio. Suzuki probably thought this was a prime moment to helm an heir for Miyazaki, and roped in Goro for such position. During this time Ghibli has been having issues of raising their staff and finding a director that could replace Miyazaki, but there were many unfortunate incidents where young and talented directors passed away from health complications.
Even through out the production of Earthsea, you see many problems that arise from Goro’s I experience of directing and managing a production and if you have seen the movie it’s very apparent. You see that there are scenes that resembles Miyazaki’s prior works in film and also his work for televisions. It was a hodgepodge, a scrap book of Miyazaki’s works, this is why he was apposed to Goro directing the film. Now you know Japanese males of Miyazaki’s generation are workaholics and extremely strict. That’s just how they were like, I’m sorry to be blunt but yeah they’re are fucking assholes and abusive and distant in today’s standards.
The reason why Goro didn’t pursue the industry was that reason, he didn’t want to tread in his fathers footsteps. And Suzuki kind of screwed with both Miyazaki’s and Goro’s own decision. At the time, I honestly really didn’t like Suzuki’s actions and really gave me a bad impression of him. Though after the failure of this film, Goro and Miyazaki have worked together on Poppyhill and you can see that they had conflicts within the production but somehow managed to work together especially with the Touhoku earthquake of 311 impacting Japan as a whole.
Goro did manage a television series as a director with Polygon Picture for Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter. Which was a joint with studio Ghibli and Polygon, but was majority done independent from studio Ghibli. He is actually taking the steps to learn and gain experience, but in my opinion... still fucked up to animators who dreams to become a director and you all know how shitty their work standards and pay is... so yeah... whole situation was fucked to begin with man...

hmm yeah that does give A LOT more context than "Miyazaki was just an asshole who walked out of his own son's film", it shows the complexities within the industry and his disfavor towards the nepotism but also how Suzuki sort of urged it forward anyways. Thanks for explaining it

Just the fact that the middle guy is wearing an Evangelion shirt tells me enough. He ISN'T adult yet. None of them are. Because I'm guessing they still think angst, violence, and adult/sexual content constitute "good adult media". That innocence and beauty are illusions. Now, I enjoyed Evangelion. It's well-done media. But it's story is actually the one that is childish and unformed compared to most Ghibli films, in my opinion. Evangelion -- and these gentlemen -- don't think that simple hope, simple beauty, optimism, and the simple, everyday struggles of being a human have any _real_ merit or importance. They don't see exquisite beauty in the smallest moments of everyday life yet. They're too in their angsty, action-packed-movie phase. They -- and Evangelion -- think that "growing up" is recognizing that the world is hopeless and sh!t, and that no one is good or even tries to be good. I think that's an immature view of the world. Again: not truly grown up yet.
Have you ever noticed that elderly people and children appreciate the smallest moments in life, and take the time to appreciate true beauty? To linger and stare for a long time at a beautiful view, or the _miracle_ of a simple butterfly? That's what Ghibli films capture. The worldview of Ghibli films simultaneously encompasses childlike wonder, and the wisdom of the elderly. Both of which you scoff at when you're in your angsty teenage/20s phase of life. It's immature.
You think you're grown up when you "realize" that nothing matters, that the world is awful and you just have to deal with it, that innocence is an illusion, and that the beauty of small moments doesn't matter in the face of hopeless endless oblivion. But actually, a point of _maturity_ and _growth_ as a person is realizing that the wisdom of the elderly and the wonder of children are the most valuable things in life. That yes, the world can be bad, but that the way to properly live in the world is to recognize that beauty and everyday miracles are the most important things in the world. Not your angst and violence. Maturity is realizing that it really will be okay, and that it's healthy and good to "stop and smell the flowers." To live with eyes _unclouded by hate._
These boys are missing that. I hope they develop it someday.
Also, I'm not surprised the dislikes are hidden. I bet they got RATIOED for this ignorant take. 😂

As an animator, I bow down to the Ghilbi Artists/team of artist that went under Miyazaki. I can bet they're underpaid and intoxicated but, the fruit is memorable and to be proud for. The music of Joe Hisaishi too is the ultimate touch with these handmade frames (earlier movies). So I can't just plainly say.. the movie is overrated because of the personality of the creator.
