  • Not all bulbs are created equal.
    In this video Mariah Healey, creator of ReptiFiles, and I talk about why is UVB important, why UVB should be provided and how to correctly provide it. We have a many brands as we were able to get for the video, as well as a solar meter to test the output on each light. Mariah discusses the differences between UVB and UVA. We get some surprising results from testing these bulbs, as well as really great information from Mariah and The Dude. This isn’t exact science, this isn’t an exact controlled experiment, we’re doing this for fun and to test different bulbs. We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed making it. Thank you Mariah for your time, we loved hosting you in Houston and filming all these cool videos with you.

    An interesting experiment to see, but PLEASE keep in mind that all lamps require 100 hours to burn in and become stable, and they must also be run for at least 30 mins before testing to fully activate the phosphors. In this time the output will increase massively as you saw with the D3+ DragonLamp 14% UV-B. Even in 1 min the output increased by double. When reflected DragonLamp will provide UVI 5.00-6.00 at 15-18" from the lamp. This video shoes the importance of having a solarmeter 6.5 index meter which will allow you to create safe and effective levels of usable energy for captives, but to also monitor outputs over the year. I would also say, please do not use the 15w 12" lamps in the ShadeDwellerPro 8w fitting. ShadeDweller tech is SO not HO and is providing less wattage than is needed to power the lamp. This will under energise the lamp and put strain on the fitting itself. All in all, interesting to see. Would be great to see an update after all lamps have burned in and have been powered for the minimum 30 mins before testing. J C-S

      Thank you for that addition! I knew I was forgetting to mention something, and the 30 minute running period was it. Unfortunately due to the nature of the video we were not able to accommodate that requirement, which, again, is why this test was a super casual experiment - really just playing around with a Solarmeter and a lot of UVB bulbs. I hope to do a more formal and controlled experiment later. Thanks also for pointing that out about the ShadeDweller - I was not aware that it was not a HO bulb.

    • @ArcadiaReptile
      @ArcadiaReptile 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A good video to show how to use a meter and why they are so important. Yes, ShadeDweller is a Standard Output T5 designed to provide optimal exposure at 12" for a core crepuscular species. It was a shock that it even illuminated that other lamp, it states HO, in theory, there is no way a SO ballast can run an HO lamp.... needs investigating. If you watch the video back you will see how the UVI climbs quickly on the DragonLamp even in seconds. A lamp that has been burned in and warmed will be far far more stable and for the whole 12 months, if the correct ballast is used. ProT5 units, now available in 110v are tuned to Arcadia Reptile lamps. By using the lamp with the correct fitting you are sure of the correct energy provision and protection for the life of the lamp. Some of those super market T5 battens I have seen tested will burn through a quality lamp in 3 months or so. As you can see, this is why meters are great. They allow you to see how effective a lamp is, and make the correct adjustments to viv and decoration to ensure optimal basking indexes without over or under providing. Good work! J C-S

    This video is a game changer for me. Exactly what I was hoping to find. Took weeks to get here! Lighting/ UVB is directly correlated to Bearded Dragons well-being. Got it. Will get the 6.5 solar meter, Will create a habitat gradient. The Arcadia website, lighting guide and the Reptile Lighting FB Group are indispensable resources. This Bearded Dragon’s health will be greatly improved because of the in-depth exploration of the topic you provided. Can’t Thank You Enough. A fantastic team and individually great resources.

I truly think that this will help many people understand what and why reptiles need UVB and that its NOT an option it IS required if your going to own one of these beautiful creatures! Someone else who did a great video on UVB is TC Houston his channel is Reptile Mountain. Definitely check it out he has some other great videos too.

    Awesome comparisons. I've been meaning to get a UV meter for years now. The problem with fluorescent tubes for me is that they don't go very deep in a taller enclosure, or when they do they also cover too wide an. I prefer having multiple MVBs, halogens, or HIDs of differing wattage to reach different levels of the enclosure while also being able to cover only those specific areas so as to not constantly blast the animal with too much UV.

  • @RichardBronosky

    23:45 Shininess is a very deceptive thing. All metals and alloys reflect each wavelength in the spectrum differently. For UV light, the best reflector is aluminum. However, for visible light most other metals outperform aluminum. Also, there is surface finish. To produce what we think of as a perfect reflection, you need a perfectly smooth finish. But don't let that deceive you about the AMOUNT of light reflected. A matte finish only changes WHERE the photons are reflected. As long as both are free of contaminates on their surfaces, they reflect approximately the same amount of light. In fact I just read a study that proved that engineering students had been using aluminum kitchen foil incorrectly in UV related experiments. The shiny side reflects less UV that the dull side because it has an antioxidant on it to keep it shiny over time. In conclusion, you absolutely can make a DIY reflector out of kitchen foil that is just as good or better than one you would buy, but you have to use the dull side. ☮️❤️🌈

    I would love to see this video recreated with all the lights on for 15 min first before measuring. I feel the video is a bit misleading as most if not all of them need to be on for a bit first prior to putting out any reasonable amount not even close to maximum output. I think you spoke to the basic idea but most of your measurements would likely have been very different between housing and brands.

  • @RepTalez
    @RepTalez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've read that it takes bulbs being on for 15 minutes or so to put out their optimum levels of uvb. I'm not an expert so I can't say for sure, but if it's true then all the results would be different if the bulbs were allowed to warm up fully.

    Did I just not pay attention or am I missing the HID and HQL UV lights? Since these are best (imo) for animals that require higher uvb. I was curious to see the numbers for those. Spot and flood versions. 😊
    The T long lights just don't do the job for beardies (proven in this video haha) since they need ± 5.0 for a Basking area. And anything under 18 inch in distance would mean that the enclosure is too small imo.

    One caution regarding lighting: some albino varieties are ultra light sensitive: my albino darwin carpet python is an example. Even with a really low level light, she will bury her head in her coils after a short time; switch off the light, and her head moves into a normal position. She has a generous shady area on the ground, but doesn’t use it; when out of her hide, she is almost always on her branches. Never assume you’ve got it right: always observe the animals with great care!

      @ReptiFiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a lighting expert, but I am a reptile husbandry expert who has studied (and still studies) extensively on the art and science of reptile lighting, using sources created by actual lighting experts. This video was a casual experiment done with the intention of showing why measuring UVB output with a Solarmeter 6.5 is important and the differences between different brands and types of bulbs at different distances and in different fixtures. It's not about the exact readings. UVI readings will shift after the burn-in period, but the difference - while significant to formal studies, is not significant for the purposes of this video.

    25:15 Big mistake not testing in the side mount reflector. You were using the bulb wrong. It doesn't matter if YOUR side reflector isn't appropriate to use with a screen. You should have just warned the viewer to make sure THEIR reflector was safe to use with a screen. You still should have gotten the numbers. The numbers you did get were misinformation.
