  • The Lizard Doctor TH-cam Channel is proud to present an educational series on UVB!
This video is meant to summarize the importance of what UVB is, how we can measure it, types of UVB, show that distance to the reptile matters, show that each species has their own strength needed, that different bulbs need different distances, highlight that screens and lids can filter the strength, and highlight the importance for changing the bulb routinely even if it still works.
Check out other videos in this series that will break down specific needs of different species of reptiles.

Thank you so much for putting this together. I can't wait to see the other videos on the little critters I have. I didn't even know a screen would do that!!!!

Yes, and glass filters it out as well. So if your little critter is by a window they aren’t getting any natural UVB sadly either.

I am talking about Russian tortoise in a 4x7 ft enclosure indoor, they do get light from the windows, but I don't think enough, I have 10.0 bulbs the spirals but feel I need like 3-4. There's 2 to bask under with heat lamps for 3. The girls usually take one spot, and my male takes the other. Other side of enclosure has a ceramic heat emitter only in the hut.

Check the labeling of the bulbs they tend to give you recommended distances for different strengths

How do I change par to uvb or can I even do that. I have some very strong lights, I'm talking 1500-3000watt. What is the spectrum for nature, and is IR ok.

Unsure about Par to UVB. And I’d avoid red lights to not damage the eyes.

Can you feed them Madagascar hissing cockroaches

You can but there are better options for feeding such as dubia roaches or crickets.

Madagascar hissing cockroaches cannot be fed as adults. Their exoskeleton get too hard and will choke them.
