One of the best boxing films I have ever seen! Amazing performances all around as well as some killer cinematography and a tense but thrilling story really solidify this film as a classic! I hope you enjoy and have a great day! :)

Robert de Niro actually gained over
60 pounds for this movie, it's insane

The ending is all kinds of levels of meta: it's the famous monologue that Marlon Brando delivers in "On The Waterfront". So it's Deniro doing Brando, for the second time (he played the young Vito Corleone in Godfather Part 2.... a role which brought both men Oscars, De Niro's first, and Brando's second. DeNiro won his second Oscar for "Raging Bull" so he does a bit of Brando in both of his Oscar wins!). But it's also DeNiro playing Jake playing Brando playing Terry the boxer from "On The Waterfront"! So there's that as well! Add to that: Scorsese and De Niro's entire style goes back to Elia Kazan and "On The Waterfront" and other movies he directed. So there is that homage as well. The monologue/"On The Waterfront" script was written by Paddy Chayefsky, another fundamental influence. "On The Waterfront" is definitely a movie to get under your belt one day, just because it's referenced so much (as well as being great!)

Big fan of Cathy Moriarty. This is her first film. Her next big movie was the romantic-comedy Soapdish (1991), which I highly recommend.
Fun Fact: In preparation for his role, Robert De Niro went through extensive physical training, then entered in three genuine Brooklyn boxing matches and won two of them.

De Niro and Scorsee followed this up with the completely different "The King Of Comedy" which is great, classic....and no one has reacted to it! A huge influence on the movie "Joker" as well (that movie is, in part, an homage to "The King Of Comedy" and "Taxi Driver")./ De Niro actually gained all that weight, something no one had done at the time. He was already considered one of the greats of his generation, but "Raging Bull" really cemented it, the way "Sophie's Choice" would cement Meryl Streep's reputation a couple of years later./ Another classic Scorsese/DeNiro collaboration that no one has done: "Cape Fear", which is their biggest hit! It came out right after "Goodfellas" (which I'm sure you've seen). Definitely hit "The King Of Comedy" (1983) and "Cape Fear" (1992).

I saw this movie once many many years ago and that opening scene is the one thing that has stuck with me. Absolutely breathtaking and I also looked that song up after

Vicki WAS 15 and too young for Jake by modern standards. In 1948 or whatever it would have been creepy, but perhaps not as bad by their standards.
The age of consent varies a lot based on location and time. Today in America the age of consent is generally 18. In 1880, the average age of consent was 10 or 12.
Gross I know, but it all comes down to the idea of perceived adulthood. In 1880 attendance to school was compulsory up to the age of 10. Graduate and age of consent 10 in 1880. Graduate and age of consent, 18 today. This is not a coincidence.

One of my top ten movies ever. Good to finally see a few people reacting to it (especially someone’s as cute as you). This isn’t really much of a sports movie though and it really wasn’t designed to be. While yes, she was 15 as this based on actual people.

The "I was blind and now I see" quote at the end relates to Haig Manoogian (who the film is dedicated to.) Scorsese, in a sense, was 'blind' about movies until he went to NYU to study film and had Manoogian as his instructor. Manoogian did more to shape and influence Scorsese's aesthetic than anyone.

The fights were intentionally stylized, despite the hyper-realistic wounds and blood. Less like what you'd expect of a typical sports film, more like a representation of Jake's mental and spiritual state.

Probably one of the best films of that decade. De Niro deserved his Oscar for best actor, his performance and physical transformation are amazing. Too bad Scorsese didn't win for best director. Great reaction!

Callbacks to another great drama about a boxer "On The Waterfront". And influenced Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights". Love seeing the connections.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Scorsese‘s movie Mean Streets But that’s a really underrated movie with De Niro and Harvey Keitel

Thanks, Oliver! Thanks, Huxley! 🥊 Some other titles of Scorsese's you might enjoy watching or reacting to: THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (1993), THE AVIATOR (2004) and HUGO (2011). #RolyPolyOllie #MartinScorsese #RagingBull

Joke got suspended because he didn't make it look good. It was obvious he took a dive. So the bookies would have an army of angry people looking for a refund cause the fight was fixed. The commission had to suspend him it looked so obvious. If they didn't reporters would be writing stories how they're corrupt.

Good video. Nice to see young man with an understanding of classic, b & w masterpieces.
Allright, just for that I'm gonna give you some insight :
When 'Jake' sits in his dressing room at the end ~ doing his 'I could've been a contenda' dialogue ~ he's actully quoting dialogue from a classic Elia Kazan directed masterpiece from 1954 ~ "On the Waterfront" ~ a classic line spoken by a very young Marlon Brando ~ to his older brother in the movie ~ 'Rod Steiger' ~
Brando played a broken, has-been, washed up boxer ~ and 'Jake' in "Raging Bull" identified with him !
