@SantaAnaCreations I'm not comparing protools to other daws, I'm just commenting that prootools has very good editing.. im sure other daws have great or even excellent editing capabilities... Now back to our regularly scheduled program 🙃
All Facts 🎯 Bedroom producers have shifted to Logic or even FL STUDIO… Simplicity All In One with LOYAL fan base… PROTOOLS is for professional audio engineers with a few bedroom producers
Quite possibly, but also no way to prove that. PT was an industry standard for years and most of the alternative market is in response to what PT didn’t offer. Kind of like saying no would would ever eat a chicken if they tried scrambled eggs first.
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 It’s not a ‘cult’ 😂. Why change what isn’t broken? Major studios are too busy and it’s too pointless to retrain. ‘Protools is a cult’ the eff you talking about get outta here
It is the most powerful editing DAW for those who get it. Less deep diving into menus. One key , key commands are a killer especially when you have your hands full playing. Not to mention their controllers
Nonsense. There are a handful of DAWs that run rings around PT. After 23+ years in PT I can honestly say Avid are lazy and behind the market. Great for music producers but lousy for post producers who deep dive into real time broadcasting, I’ve been requesting crap loads of features since 2006 and Avid just look the other way.
@@malcomowenflood yes, I believe other companies have seen the backlash from the customers towards Waves, and are now, rethinking some of their bad business decisions.
You gave a good assessment of Pro Tools. I use a variety of DAWs, too me Pro Tools is definitely the best audio editing & mixing DAW for getting things done quickly.
Appreciate it, and glad Pro Tools is getting the job done for you too! Do you jump between different daws for different parts of a project then (like for the tracking and production phase of a song for example)?
@@malcomowenflood yes I learned to use sequencers in the early mid 80s with Cubase on an Atari ST. Back then things were based around MIDI before they integrated Audio recording into Computer sequencers, so Cubase tends to me my go to for getting my MIDI sequencing and editing done. But I always find myself porting projects to Pro Tools for Audio, also because most pro studios have PT, so it much easier to send a project for mixing already setup for the mix engineers. In recent years I have been mainly doing most of the work in logic but when it's time for final mixing for a release, it ends up in Pro Tools because that is what the mix engineer uses. So. Basically, Cubase mainly for midi work and editing, and logic for a combination of MIDI and Audio, but I do prefer the overall feel and sound of Pro Tools.
Not to me, I left Pro Tools for Studio One, and I haven't looked back. Mixing and audio editing in Studio One is easier for me. Now and again I tried to use Pro Tools and just couldn't.
I purchased the $300 PT perpetual license right before the subscription madness started & there’s no update in the world they could do to get me to upgrade. I can record, mix & edit extremely well as is.
I agree with you on the Pro Tools Sketch it is amazing and every child should spend some time with it and see if they are interested in being musical. It’s amazing how technology has helped us have the ability to practice so many forms of art. Avid did well on this one… I hope they press harder to be the DAW for recording arts programs in high schools!
Love this take! I used to teach a recording program at a private school and avid was involved with it - would be great to see them integrate with the public schools as well!
I think the free market will decide, what DAW's any school should use. If the school wants to use an DAW from the 90´s, the PT is the right choice. But if they want a modern DAW, then anything else than PT is the right choice.
I admire your enthusiasm about Protools however as a former HD user and perpetual license holder I cannot see myself even considering this software again. I stopped using PT years ago and am doing great without it. Also, not using it saved me hundreds of dollars over the years.
Thanks for your comment! Would you care to share what you personally switched to for a DAW from Pro Tools? It's great to get insight from people who, like yourself, have actually used Pro Tools for more than a just a trial period too, so please feel free to get into what the differences are and etc if you want!
I bought pro tools like 2 years ago, but lost the ability to use my license after 12 months. Apparently if you update the Mac OS pro tools will not work unless you REPURCHASE a perpetual license that’s meant for that os… so I really only have it forever if I never update my computer???? I hope this gets resolved cause I’m still bitter about that haha
Glad to hear from someone that this is good news for! Out of curiosity, do you think you will use both Logic and Pro Tools as your DAW's together (for example, do songwriting and pre production in Logic, and then your actual production and editing in Pro Tools?)
@@malcomowenflood I may well do, when I worked in the studio Pro Tools was the fastest DAW I used. I stuck with it for some time. I am interested to see how I go, its also useful now I'm on M1 for opening up some old projects. I just noticed as well a load of freeby plugins came with the renewall which made it worth going for.
Avid has made it pretty confusing to grab a perpetual license right now, so I think that's actually a good idea! I'll make one, but just to try and help you sooner: if you own a previous perpetual license (of any current or past version of Pro Tools, you can buy an upgrade license on the Pro Tools website. If you have never owned a perpetual version of Pro Tools, you can currently only purchase a perpetual license via a 3rd party reseller. Sweetwater for example has it available for download currently! I'm not sure why AVID doesn't have perpetual Pro Tools licenses available on their own website yet, but I'd suspect it is going to be available there eventually as well! Hope this helps!
This is why I went to Logic. As far as running it on one of their computers… do you really want to run Windows? I’ve never been in a studio that used Windows.
I'm not sure what you mean, and think I'm misunderstanding your comment, or perhaps something in my video was misunderstood by you. I don't want to run windows, and know of very few studios running windows - so I agree with you on that! I did mention be able to work in studios around the world because of my Pro Tools skillset, but those studios primarily run Pro Tools on Mac computers, so that's never been an issue. That said, when I have had to use a Windows it wasn't that tricky to get used to for the day! Sorry if I'm misunderstanding and this answer doesn't help answer your question!
I concur…I was going to end my PT subscription cause I have an PT 12.4 and PT 2018.4 HDX system after my Berklee classes ended. And I may still do that get a perpetual PT studio license next year for my mobile Laptop rig so I don’t have to pay out every year..good stuff for a change I agree!😊
I haven't looked into this yet, but I'd definitely suggest trying to see if you can get an educational deal on that perpetual license via your Berklee student status!
This is good news! I've recently been thinking about giving PT another try. I was on PT 11 for about a year but it was way too unstable for me so I switched to Cubase, but now that I'm on Mac I'm curious if the stability issues would be improved. I just have to see if there's a way I can install that old version or if I'm going to need to pay $200 to get current again. Either way, $200 is a lot better than $600
Cheers Greg! Pro Tools has definitely added a ton of great features since Pro Tools 11 (ARA, folder tracks/routing, track freeze/commit) so it's a much more capable daw than when you left it for Cubase! That said, Cubase has all those things too haha!
@@malcomowenflood I'm kind of with you on liking all of the DAWs, haha. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and it's hard to pick a favorite. Cubase is just the one I'm most fluent with at the moment. I also really love Reaper. They're all pretty great, haha.
For the short-term it's obviously good so far, but once the investment firm reaches it's goal, it's anybody's guess what will happen after that. I'm still using PT 2020.6 on an Intel Mac running Mojave. It mostly runs stable and I'm able to finish sessions, however the side chain delay compensation doesn't work right. At some point I may buy a perpetual upgrade to have access to versions after mine. I've been a PT user since 2007. It's love/hate with PT. I'm just so used to the workflow and GUI, that I loathe having to learn a new DAW and actually like it.
Fingers crossed the hold course and things keep improving! I hear you on the changing daws conundrum. I found cubase somewhat easy to pickup and actually almost made the move but going to hold strong for now with this recent news!
@@malcomowenfloodI was using Cubase back in the early 2000's, but I never upgraded when the Mac ditched OS9 and PPC. I should've just stayed with Cubase back then. It was great for programming MIDI drums, something I wish PT would improve on.
I completely agree with you. I record as a hobby and was priced out of Pro Tools, changed to Cakewalk for free and got almost the same features and performance. Never complained to them, just left. The new structure provides reasonable options an I'm back on Pro Tools.
I've been using Pro Tools since 2018 and started with Pro Tools First. Oh my, was it unstable that version! While other DAWs had ARA2 integration for Melodyne, RX and other ARA2 enabled plug-ins, Pro Tools didn't as well as Apple Silicon compatibility, built-in side-chain compensation, perpetual licensing, dark mode, a creative set of tools (Sketch is actually quite nice and a good way to approach to new customers specially beginners) and many other things such as Folder Tracks and more that I can't think of at the moment. Even with all of this, I think Avid is now going where it should be. Time will tell if we're going to be wrong or not but hopefully it won't be like that. If there is one thing I'd love to see is their pro lineup of hardware being decreased in costs such as Pro Tools | Carbon and MTRX Studio and also, which I think it's very important; giving support to these pieces of gear for years to come and to not discontinue them too soon. Time will only tell but I think the future seems a bit brighter for Avid. There are a lot of things to fix, such as Avid Link. Concept ain't bad but needs to be polished. I like the way PreSonus has their "social app" built in. Enough rant for the day! Great video Malcom, subscribed!
Totally agree! Pro Tools has essentially caught up on features that users care about - like the ones you mentioned, folder tracks, ARA Melodyne, Apple Silicon Support - (although I'd love for it to be more stable still, and boot up faster) and these new changes indicate that Avid could keep a competitive edge going forward. I honestly haven't messed with Avid Link much at all, I close it whenever I notice it is running haha! Appreciate the comment and the sub!
I hear you mate but I'm not going back. Final nail in the coffin for me was native Apple silicon support. You are spot on though about it being the best editing daw. Even a beginner can craft elaborate edits using just T, R and the edit tool. You don't even need coordinated hand shortcuts it's all just one hand stuff. The Edit tool is a master class of great, minimalist, design. Frankly I don't know why everyone else just doesn't copy the edit tool. It's the way to do this. I bought Bitwig actually because it is pretty close to the Pro Tools edit tool and that's that for me. It's great in lots of other areas and I mostly do electronic music production anyway so this move aligns with that. Good to hear they're turning the ship around though.
The edit tool is so amazing! I love it. I haven’t really looked into Bitwig as a DAW but stoked that it’s working for you! The silicon support with Pro Tools was tough haha. I stuck it out, paying a yearly “support plan” on my perpetual license for years. I thought it would come a lot sooner then it did 🥲 glad it’s supported now though!
@@malcomowenflood You and I were in the same boat sounds like. I waited until the 2021 update only to find no native M1 support. It was at that point that I said, well, fuck this and bit the bullet. Bitwig is more of a fit for us here anyway because of the nature of the work (i.e. almost entirely electronic music production) but of course it was still a hard pill to swallow. Years of update fees and having a kind of intimate knowledge of the tool etc etc. It all made it a very bitter pill haha. All that said Bitwig has some advantages over Pro Tools. Probably the biggest one is it was designed from the ground up with hardware integration in mind. Anyone who has a lot of outboard and hardware instruments would appreciate that. No more calculating hardware latency (did you ever have to do that in Pro tools? It's fine but it has to be done manually and is a bit of a pain. Bitwig can do it for you; no manual calculation involved). The hardware integration piece is the pièce de résistance as they say however. Makes all your hardware instruments behave kind of like plugins so you get the benefit of a fully software workflow but sound of hardware. And probably the other think I like the most is you can configure it to behave however you want. I basically have managed to mimic the Pro Tools edit tool in full. Region hover, T, R, etc. It would be hard to distinguish between it and Pro Tools in how you operate it. And it sounds probably as good when making lots of edits. I would say it is as good. I didn't enjoy Logic for that reason. You need fades on every cut otherwise you get lots of pops and crackles at edit points. Okay you can batch fade but I always though fades are more of an art when editing. Anyway I'm glad Avid is at least making some improvements and taking steps in the right direction because I love Pro Tools. Was kind of sad to see it go the way it went for a few years there. Cheers.
I have been $$$O beaten by Avid that now I will only believe it when I see it!!! The more innovations they make, the more unstable it becomes. At first I thought it was because my computer's resources were not enough for the new improvements, so I changed my computer and upgraded the operating system and nothing, it was still just as unstable in operation.... All the other DAWs have passed it by and have a huge advantage and I don't know how they have allowed this to happen...
Amazingly, it seems like no. Production Expert is the best resource I've found for any information, and of course the changes on Avid/Pro Tools websites do reflect these changes, so it's possible to back the information up - but it seems odd that Avid didn't have an official press release as of yet. At least not one that I've been able to find!
TDM was a dog in the past… I spent around 25.000 on a TDM rig years ago. After a session where I had a Pro Tools tech working on my rig WHILST I WAS WORKING ON A JOB!!!! I sold it and have never been happier since my Logic RME setup.
Interesting! I really loved working on Pro Tools TDM rigs! They were rock solid! That said - I wasn't the one you had to pay for them, so I can see how that would be less enjoyable 😂 Glad you're happy with your current rig though. Logic didn't click for me personally (I have used it quite a bit for different projects) but I do recommend it to people often and I love the RME interface line!
I used Pro Tools for 10 years. In my humble opinion, I think Cubase is editing king. I have tried and used all major daws and I still think the latest version of Cubase has the most powerful editing tools.
If I were to switch….. it would be Cubase haha! I think cubase is incredibly powerful, you’re probably right that it has more tools - especially in the midi realm! But I haven’t seen anyone operate a daw faster then Pro Tools (but that may just be because of the circles I run in!)
I (think) they never actually took them away! Folks should still have their original perpetual licenses in their avid account, just for whatever version they originally purchased on (which may be quite old by now). And with that being the case, they should be able to to take advantage of this new loyalty upgrade pricing! I can go download my original Pro Tools 7 if I wanted to, and my 2023 license covers all previous versions - so I think anyone who has held a perpetual license should be good to go now, if they want to jump back into pro tools anyways!
@@malcomowenflood They did not take them away, but they essentially made it incredibly uneconomical to renew a perpetual license. For THOSE people that switched from Perp to Sub, I would like to see AVID give them BACK their perpetual licenses, or at least give them the opportunity to go back. I should have been clearer.
Ah! Now I see your point! I hadn’t considered that, and can definitely see how someone who has paid to be subscribed to Pro Tools for many years could feel a bit ripped off. It’s a great point, thanks for clarifying!
I found out I cant upgrade via the Avid site as i have a PT11 perp license and Avid wont deal with that WHY THE F NOT!. I have to use resellers. But the issue is not one UK reseller is an actual music store. They have cooperate ad companies and weird media companies I've never heard of and two of them don't even have a tel number, one didnt even have a contact email. Could this company be any more psycho..I was just looking to try it out again. given up already.
Avid sucked for ages and they've CRUSHED the last few years. They always seemed to hate their users and have terrible customer service. Now, it just seems a lot better. So, bravo Avid!
probably because tantacrul kicked their asses in the notation software department so they realize how fragile their userbase is whenever there's better options lol
@@Bluenebula I think you could say the same about the quick growth in popularity in every other DAW. Everyone went running for better options like Logic and Studio One. I bet they freaked out!
Goddamn, Pro tools, Cubase, Logic.....all these names were the king of the hill once. Unfortunately for them, then came things like Reaper, where you can connect any audio anywhere, right in the mixer,....and you can chain several commands together, to achieve something that you would need to click the mouse 5 or 6 times even, all in one shortcut. Pro Tools is relegated to a boomer status at this point. Paying hundreds of dollars per year, just to be able to use something that works , if it works at all. PT users got hooked into that crap, and now they can hardly get out of it. Seems like PT ecosystem is a one long blackmail, once you get in, you cant get out. How about paying only ONCE about 220 dollars, getting endless free updates, and not having your DAW crash on you while you are working? Reaper is like the modern society moving forward, while Pro Tools is like Cuba, recycling old things that were hot,80 years ago. My friends cousin, a sound mixer for movies in UK, is trying to escape Pro Tools as we speak. He is tired of paying an arm an a leg for everything PT related. You can only fool people for so long. The party is over.
Yes! Well, Avid kinda always did. Structure Free is a sampler that's existed for ages in Pro Tools, but it's pretty old school and not really want you're likely looking. I'd look into their newer Pro Tools Sketch features and see if that is what you're looking for! Pro Tools Sketch was released with Pro Tools 2023.9, last year.
Pro tools first is free . It's now called Pro Tools Intro.Even tho I have both in working order on my Mac but don't use them. For what I do Artist is the one I subscribed too. Really just for the plugins I get for a year for 99$ Just the Smack compressor which I love is like 350$ to buy. But because I let my subscription lapse for a few days I lost all the plugins that I subscribed for in the first place. I should have just used intro . I have all the UA2 and UADX plugins any vocalist could ever want . FK Avid. The only thing with PT Intro is you only get 8 audio tracks a project. That's jot enough for the vocal arrangements I record. I need like 16. I love LUNA and Studio One too. I don't know why I even mess with Avid.
I’m not a user of pro tools but as a musician I have noticed a trend where if I go into a studio that uses pro-tools we will inevitably waste time on software glitches. At this point I can only assume it’s a feature to burn up billable hours. I look forwards to the day when Protools is no longer the industry standard.
It's a great comment indeed, and is certainly a sentiment that I hope Avid / Pro Tools notices! It's good reminder that the DAW doesn't just serve the user, it also (should) serve the client.
No studio should be billing the client during software glitches, especially if they are long-winded. If a PT glitch ever causes more than a couple minute long issue, I call for a time out so I can deal with the issue and will not charge the client for that time. Shame on all studios who charge clients because an issue they are having with anything (hardware or software) is taking up valuable time.
I guess that’s possible but this seems (to me) like a reaction to an already decreased customer base, so they are trying to get people back - which means (if I’m correct) a lot of people have already let their perpetual support plans lapse. So I’m hopeful that this isn’t a bait and switch, but time will tell!
My plugins are certainly perpetual. It sounds like you've subscribed to one of their optional plugin subscription packages perhaps? They do offer additional plugins via subscription that are beyond what's included with a perpetual license, but the ones that are included with the perpetual license are definitely perpetual! Hope you get it sorted!
It does also feel like there has been an increase in speed from the company. Almost feels like (and that is a BiG almost) like a smaller company again. Seems like they are making decisions and pushing out ideas , like Sketch, faster. My relationship with Pro Tools kinda feels like my relationship with Weezer…. It’s not good. Lol. It’s like “remember how good it was?!?” And then they screw it up. I am reluctantly optimistic.
“I am reluctantly optimistic” sounds like the title of the next Weezer song 😂 but I agree, I’m feeling good about where pro tools is headed now and want to believe!
You lose a majority of you plugins if you don’t continue your support plan. It is about 70 plugins from the bundle. (Avid complete bundle) They would have many more customers if you were allowed to keep the bundle. Not really good ethics on Avid’s part.
I kind of have the opposite view on this in that the added plugins are a bonus to incentivize the subscription route over perpetual licensing. As much as I’d love more included plugins with my perpetual license, I understand why they need to make the subscription plan have some advantages for certain users!
I'm in the market for a new DAW. Cubase doesn't work with 12th gen intel, and both Cubase and PT look like A*** on windows with their grey title bars. I've been using reaper on and off, and I was hoping this was going to be the good news that would bring me back to pro tools, but clearly the people managing the software engineers have their heads on backwards. The whole point of a product or software release is that it's a stable, completed version. Yet they still haven't figured out how to make their software run on the only 2 operating systems they offer it on.... Doesn't sound like Steinberg or Avid are customer focused. And everyone of these "old skool" old-timer-gate-keepers don't know anything about software and so they just accept it, "it's better than the first version". We, the people, need a proper DAW, one that does both audio and midi like they're it's first language, it should be as-good if not better than a pro musicians, and look the part, like everything in show biz does... So we can rule out PT and Cubase then.
i dumbed adobe for same reason $2700 each ver from 3.2 in 90's than ever update another 1k for years when affinity and resolve became available and stable i dumped them never looked back
So, that’s great and all but the one thing you didn’t address is have they done anything to make it more stable? I was on Pro Tools for 15 years and ditched it in 2021 simply because I was tired of it crashing. I couldn’t afford to be mid session with an artist and have it crash. If they could fix the stability of it, I’m back in. Until then, I’m still a no to Pro Tools.
I totally agree, and have had very stable periods and (recently) extremely unstable times as well. I'm currently doing some tests and experimentation to see if I can figure out the common themes that lead to Pro Tools crashing for me, and I think I actually have - too soon to say though. If it stays smooth I'll report back with what I changed, in a week or so of continued success!
AND I forgot: WHY would you upgrade, upgrade, upgrade..... if it does not bring you advantage. Most will call "bug fixes", yep that's true. ALL DAWS (software) will have bugs, so live with them if possible. I would rather have an upgrade that just fixes all bugs giving a stable tool than new fancy stuff I hardly ever need / use. I started looking at what I NEED, not what's new again. Maybe, you will find out you don't need all this fancy new stuff. It's like my mobile phone. I just want to call or text someone, look at my mail, calendar, find my way back home and pay. What I get is all kinds of stupid shit, that require me to handle my mobile phone screen in 785 different ways. So I now end up with a phone that lives it's own life, I can't just disable all this new shit and my old mobile, that did exactly what most users expect it to do is no linger supported. You have to go with the new way of mister fancy. Found my old Nokia from 1995 (or there about) still works, not with some I now need. So, it's choices, choices.... But Change for Change sake is bullshit. You could do all your work with the basics of any DAW.
I recently switched to PT because they went perpetual and because Cubase is not stable with Intel 13th Gen. I am still wrapping my head around PT but it is superior for mixing and editing where it is not even close. The manual routing is a mind bender but you get used to it. I only use Cu-trash for midi, vst and composition in order to export to PT. Since I have been tinkering with it now I finally understand why it is the industry standard. Just my opinion though.
The PT UI looks ANCIENT!!! In reality they havent updated the code ever..... they might have added things on top but they have NOT restructured the meat and bones ever . You cant drag and drop files into it. You cant put an effect.on a word or phrase without committing it or making a new track. Layout customibility is almost non existent. REAPER REAPER REAPER!!!!! IS THE MOST POWERFUL DAW. Editing capabilities farrrrrr exceed protools i can click on any oart of a track and add an effect to it. Listen to effect and edit it in real time strtch the clip longer if i want the effect on more of the track. I can hold alt on a track and slow it down by stretching longer or speed it by making it shorter. Gain automation issss soooooo easy. Bussing tracks is a 1 click process or you can go through routing module like usual. LUFS READING ON ALL EXPORTS. PT SHOULD JUST HANG ITSELF ITS RIDING ON THE FUEMS OF "INDUSTRY" LORE. REAPER AND FL HAVE FREE UPDATES FOR LIFE. REAPERS FREE "TRIAL" Never ends they ask that when you make a certain amount of money with program that you pay a 1 time fee. I can run FL THROUGH REAPER ON AN AUDIO TRACK with fl rack vst. the entire daw ready to use with audio routed through reaper. Self installs when fl is recognized on computer And you can make it look like any daw by downloading a layout. PT ABELTON LOGIC FL REAPER IS KING...
While I agree that Reaper is awesome, I do need to point out that pretty well everything listed in your comment is entirely, and easily, possible in Pro Tools as well. The only exception would be the lufs meter on export, that’s a neat feature for sure!
Too late. I jumped my perpetual PT license to Logic two years ago because of this. I now know that I prefer Logic all in all. And PT midi is still garbage IMO.
✅ What’s the difference in price now? With the current subscription ($300.00) per year. Additionally one price only for Logic with free updates forever. New corporation owners of Protools are revenue focused and taking advantage of industry standard DAW. Throw your money way, throw all your money way. (Old Chinese proverb)❗️
It depends on which version of Pro Tools you are looking to purchase, but perpetual upgrade price for Pro Tools Studio is now $199 US (which I believe is about $150 less than previously). The big other perk being that you can upgrade from any version (so I can skip the next version if I don't think it's worth upgrading for example). Logic is certainly more affordable (both upfront and over the long term) if that is your main concern.
imo , i believe many PT Users have Stockholm Syndrom issue........really........i hear we are happy they give us the dark mode, and then can f.....around for years again with the customers , and the avid gospel community sings glory songs of avid again
I definitely really enjoyed cubase when I tried it, and I’ve noticed their loyalty deals have been very generous too! It wasn’t at Pro Tools level when I got started in recording studios, thus my choice in Pro Tools - but if I was starting today it’s possible I may have chose Cubase instead! But with these recent changes to Avids loyalty approach, I think both are likely great choices for someone choosing their first daw! (PS is the name Nuendo and Cubase interchangeable? Im a little confused by that!)
@@malcomowenflood nuendo is a more comprehensive DAW than Cubase , nuendo is a pro version on cubase per say , ha . So they are different, another way to say could be that cubase is the lite version of Nuendo 😎👍🏼🎷
@@francocoello5002 I'm not sure you properly stated the differences between the two. Cubase and Nuendo are both 100% professional grade softwares. The differences are Nuendo include features for Audio Post Production. And Cubase focuses mainly on Music Production, omitting Audio Post features for those who don't need them. Those are the core differences between the 2.
@@francocoello5002nuendo I don't think of as the pro version , cubase is pro Nuendo for me just ramps up fearutes media composition which not everyone needs
I have quite enjoyed Cubase when I've tried it, but found that I preferred Pro Tools for editing (slip editing at least, the elastic audio equivalent in Cubase seemed awesome!) - but maybe it is just that I am so much more fluent with Pro Tools and it's key commands, and need to put more time in with Cubase. Is there anything in particular that you like in Cubase's editing workflow that I should look into?
@malcomowenflood how both daws navigate movement is very different. Pro tools is really locked into having to click and zoom. Cubase, you just put your mouse wheel in any location, and it will take you right to that point. As someone who started out on pro tools it took me a while to adjust muscle memory between how both navigate. I use the same key commands in Cubase as in protools. Another pro...(being able to make universal commands cross platform). As for slip editing....Cubase does all of that and even more. In the Cubase slip edit.....you can roll audio back and forth. So for instrument edits....you can just chop a bass, drums, gtr or vox.....and rotate the audio to the location you want. You don't need to more the clip and fill gaps. I work with bands and live instruments. Editing is the end all be all in my world. I spent a lot of my time pocketing and editing live performances. Drum editing in beat detective is gross compared to how it works in Cubase. Whether you are talking about basic slip editing of drums....editing or multi-track phase coherent time stretching. There are honestly too many reasons to mention. Also.....direct wav form pencil drawing. In Cubase I can literally draw the wav forms with a pencil and set the wav forms physically change on the screen. Compared to the standard automation lane. Something I can't live withdrawn anymore. Also how Cubase deals with stems. Many people have to use some scripting code external software in protools....and that is not great either. Cubase is set up to deliver stems in any form needed....pre or post processing.....with or without master bus processing to effect the downstream of stems. Dude.....again....I could write a book on why people should burn pro tools and run away from that horrible blood sucking leach of a company. Use anything other than pro tools! Reaper, studio one, logic, ableton.....anything but protools. I have given that company 10's of thousand over there years. Not another cent from me. It is too little too late for them.
I appreciate you taking the time to share all this man! It's totally intriguing. I'll keep picking away and experimenting with cubase on the side for now, and once I feel fluent enough I'll take a mix on in it as an experiment and see how it goes!
I stopped using pro tools 10 years ago when I discovered reaper , editing in reaper is way easier you can have midi audio and video on the same tracks updates twice a month on average could run on usb drive and it's virtually free last pt version I owned was pt 11
its still a total rip off. almost 4 times the cost of other daws which are WAY better at midi. Pro tools will have to bring their prices down for the ultimate version perpetual or they are going to fail in the long run..
Nd stop spreading false information because I just went to their site again! And have to squint my eyes to see the very tiny text that says if you want a perpetual license find a reseller..why tf do I have to find a reseller! Why can’t I choose the option just like I can choose a subscription which is in big bold text! A company as large as avid can’t even update their website..what a joke
Hey man, I think that's just as lame as you do. It's not false information just because we don't like how it's been implemented so far. Perpetual Licenses are available, just currently only via 3rd party websites as of right now if you are purchasing a perpetual license for the first time. If you are upgrading an existing perpetual license, that can be done via Avids website. Working on a video to help show people how to navigate getting their own perpetual license (either as a newcomer to Pro Tools, or as an existing Pro Tools perpetual owner) as we speak and will be live by tomorrow morning.
PT is not longer the industry standard, period. They are desperately trying to follow others DAWs features (see clips management in Ableton Live) but still, this desperate move to close the gap is pointless. Steinberg Nuendo is the new rising industry standard and for a lot of good reasons. Nuendo is a very powerful DAW that makes PT a joke.
Are other DAWs better for certain things? Yes. But PT is the industry standard weather you say so or not, no one in the industry is running Nuendo for paying clients 😂
@@chosenonebeats The sooner you realize it, then better is for you. Sorry but this is the reality, Nuendo is largely used world wide in pro studio facilities. Probably you are not a pro, you are just a PT fan.
@@chosenonebeats I'm not. If you know for sure that big firms like Crytek, Ubisoft, CSC Studio(Where The Crown tv show was mixed) Orange studio, and many others, that all of them using Nuendo as DAW of choice, they haven't paying clients, because they do not give a shit of PT, well please give us a fact checking. Otherwise you better shut your mouth. This world is for pro and not for clowns. Bro.
I’m a Pro Tools user since 2009 and think this so called change is still a rip-off.. I decided to stay on my PT 11 and I make music just fine. No update since is worth spending lots of money for. Still I blame Microsoft and Adobe for introducing this scam idea of software subscription
So you think Pro Tools should include free updates? Or just that the new upgrade price is still too high? (Not being flippant - I’m genuinely curious about what you think Pro Tools should be offering for existing users)
If you mixing fr fr its protool if you just a artist doing your thing it’s whatever, i don’t care how good your mixing skills is 10x diamond plaque mixer Mixing for $350 a track I’m not printing shit down to send over to mix better have protools
Thanks for the comment! Just to make sure I'm understanding, your preferred workflow is to send the entire Pro Tools session (PTX file and all) to the mixer, rather than sending consolidated WAV files?
Totally! I normally just consolidate and export the files rather than bounce them all, but if you need the processing to be included then sending the entire pro tools session folder makes a ton of sense!
Avid has been milking people for years and years. Pro tools is nice but unless you enjoy wasting your money overtime then…….. I do love using pro tools but I can’t justify supporting their expensive business model.
Protools is NOT back! They suck! There is always something wrong with it and now my 2 templates have disappeared and i have no idea how to find them!!!!!
Sorry to hear about your lost templates. I made a backup of mine in Dropbox just incase! I haven’t had to use them but it’s always an option. Maybe using a recent session that used those templates to pull that template data from again would be a somewhat manageable recovery process? You would have to clear out some data, I’m sure, but it would give you a good starting point anyways!
I’m not sure I agree, since pro tools original removal of perpetual and upgrade loyalty was surely a move to make more revenue, but in either case the two can be aligned! I don’t mind if they increase their revenue or profit, if they are able to better serve their customers! A win-win is most certainly still a win!
I.'m so fed up by all these BS rants about what is the "best" DAW! It's easy. The "Best" is the one that: a) allows you to do what you want to do. b) YOU are most experienced and comfortable to work with. Who has knocked you the code doesn't mayor. in the slightesed! Off cause, the way manufacturers treats their customers matter. These days all manufacturers tread their customers, more or less, like s**t. So, it doesn't matter, that much. There was a time when manufacturers understood that satisfied customers were their most valuable asset. There hays are long gone, however! The same goes for your rants about studio hopping. DAWs are unique, in that they aren't self-contained. It doesn't matter how many studios run the same DAW that you use, unless they also use all the same plugins! It doesn't matter what DAW you (and the other studios) are running. If you don't run the same plugins, you're screwed. If you really want to safely studio hop, there's only one foolproof method. Save att your audio tracks as Wave files (starting at the same measure, whenever the actual audio starts). These are often somewhat erroneously called "Stems". These can be imported to any DAW on the planet (except for ProTool Free), as far as I know.
I really think this video was quite clearly not a "Pro Tools Is The Best Daw Ever" rant type of video, man. I spend as much time bashing Pro Tools as I do talking about this recent improvements haha! And using studios interchangeable is totally a thing - just primarily for tracking and production. I, and many other people choose studios based on the specific projects sound all the time. I don't really care too much about certain plugins being available while recording at a new studio as we are just tracking, not mixing. Then I just move back to my own rig for mixing! If I really need something, I just install it on the studio computer and bring my iLok along. You'll also find that most commercial studios have quite the collection of plugins, so usually the plugins I wanted are already available on their machine - most of the time anyways! Jumping between studios while trying to mix would be a nightmare, but for tracking it's totally common.
@@tallawahconstance.3012A) it's imagination paired with technical application that will make you 'shine'. B) It kind of depends on the machine you are trying to run it on as to how much memory is available and what percentage of that it uses.
I agree the editing capabilities of protools are very good.. if you basically treat protools like a tape machine for audio you can't go wrong..
@@SantaAnaCreationswhat third-party plugins does PT require for editing? lol
@SantaAnaCreations I'm not comparing protools to other daws, I'm just commenting that prootools has very good editing.. im sure other daws have great or even excellent editing capabilities...
Now back to our regularly scheduled program 🙃
That’s what it’s designed to do!
If PT came out today as a new product, no Cubase or Logic user would even pay attention to it.
If you’re a producer who works in large format studios, you still need to know protools if you wanna drive it
@@Tyrell_Corp2019 It’s not a ‘cult’ 😂. Why change what isn’t broken? Major studios are too busy and it’s too pointless to retrain. ‘Protools is a cult’ the eff you talking about get outta here
I was a Cubase user since ‘96 or so. And then a ProTools user in the 2000s. Then back to Cubase. But on Logic the past 8 years.
It is the most powerful editing DAW for those who get it. Less deep diving into menus. One key , key commands are a killer especially when you have your hands full playing. Not to mention their controllers

@@alainjulot3490 lol
I believe that we can thank Waves for a lot of future behavior from audio software companies.
Are you referring to their rollback on their subscription only policy earlier this year?

Thank you
You gave a good assessment of Pro Tools.
Sounds like a logical and solid workflow! Thanks for sharing all that!
I completely agree with your comments. It was needed and a lot of loyal users deserve this. Lets hope its a new business model for the future.
Agreed!
May be a new Pro Tools user coming from Logic. It's good pro tools new owners did this!
Fantastic just renewed been on Logic for 5 years, but missed some of the cool editing of Pro Tools.
Glad to hear it!
iLok issue?
@@malcomowenflood it was in the end odd one, wasn’t picking up in any port. I take it back…..
Thanks for the video. Could you make one explaining how to get a perpetual license?
@@gregfender Totally agree. My proficiency with Pro Tools is the primary reason I've stuck with it as a DAW!
Alright buddy, calm down - it’s only music man
For the short-term it's obviously good so far, but once the investment firm reaches it's goal, it's anybody's guess what will happen after that.
@@davejohnsonmusic It's definitely very well rounded!
REAPER IS KING
This is a win for PT
I agree!
Stoked! Thanks for posting this info!!!
Cheers!
Is there a link to an official PT page about this news?
That said - I wasn't the one you had to pay for them, so I can see how that would be less enjoyable 😂
Glad you're happy with your current rig though.
I never got rid of my perpetual license. I'd like to see them give people back their perpetual licenses.
The party is over.
they have a sampler now?
Thanks for the up date

Where’s the perpetual license at? It’s invisible! You can’t go to their site, click pro tools first and choose perpetual license
Underated comment💯
It's a great comment indeed, and is certainly a sentiment that I hope Avid / Pro Tools notices! It's good reminder that the DAW doesn't just serve the user, it also (should) serve the client.
No studio should be billing the client during software glitches, especially if they are long-winded. If a PT glitch ever causes more than a couple minute long issue, I call for a time out so I can deal with the issue and will not charge the client for that time. Shame on all studios who charge clients because an issue they are having with anything (hardware or software) is taking up valuable time.
It’s not Pro Tools, their computers are trash, I’ve seen it run flawlessly on all kinds of old computers.
Cubase 12 is the answer. In comparison PT is a broken toy.
This might be a bait and switch. They've done it before.
Once everyone relinquishes their perpetual, they could change the model.
I guess that’s possible but this seems (to me) like a reaction to an already decreased customer base, so they are trying to get people back - which means (if I’m correct) a lot of people have already let their perpetual support plans lapse. So I’m hopeful that this isn’t a bait and switch, but time will tell!
Using pro tools for almost 15 years, moved to Logic Pro X, “NO TURNING BACK”
Go Logic Pro
Here is my problem with protools. The plugins or effects are not perpetual. I have to renew for the plugins every year. What the heck is that?!!!
Pro tools is cool but fl has free upgrades for LIFE
It does also feel like there has been an increase in speed from the company.

@@malcomowenflood i mean controlers for plugins, Softube Console 1 better implementation etc.
Got pro tools in 08 left to Reaper around 2012_13 . Will NEVER LEAVE REAPER. ITS THE BESTTTTTTTTTT
Just get a Mac already😂
Ableton feels like a genuinely modern DAW and if you learn it is great for recording too
I use Cubase with a 12th gen intel and it works great! No issues at all.
Pro tools eat to much pc ram I use it but I choose Logic be the Goat for composing and FL Studio for beats🔥🐐🔥🔥
i dumbed adobe for same reason $2700 each ver from 3.2 in 90's than ever update another 1k for years when affinity and resolve became available and stable i dumped them never looked back
So, that’s great and all but the one thing you didn’t address is have they done anything to make it more stable?
AND I forgot:
WHY would you upgrade, upgrade, upgrade..... if it does not bring you advantage.
I use Cubase on one of my computers with a 13th gen intel and it works great! No issues at all!
Self installs when fl is recognized on computer
And you can make it look like any daw by downloading a layout. PT ABELTON LOGIC FL
REAPER IS KING...
Worst thing when I saw it for 499 and then It went to599
imo , i believe many PT Users have Stockholm Syndrom issue........really........i hear we are happy they give us the dark mode, and then can f.....around for years again with the customers , and the avid gospel community sings glory songs of avid again
I buried pt for the grim reaper
😂 I love calling it the "grim reaper" 😂
Nuendo is ten times better than PT !! And Steinberg knows how to take care of their costumers
Nuendo is directed to Post Prodution.
@@francocoello5002nuendo I don't think of as the pro version , cubase is pro Nuendo for me just ramps up fearutes media composition which not everyone needs
Don't get too excited. Private equity has a long history of gutting all value from weak companies.
Editing in protools is trash compared to some other daws (I have been using protools for 20 years. Compared to Cubase PT is sad. : /
@@unrealsfx_official ooh spicy.. why you mad bro?😂
Bro.
NOPE its not. I am parpetual for longer than you even and its still 399.00 for only 12 months
I assure you it is! Avid has made it a little confusing though, so I've got another video up that details how to find it
I’m a Pro Tools user since 2009 and think this so called change is still a rip-off..
Stucked in time, Cubase 12 sends regards.
@@malcomowenflood yes they get the files or i get the files fit it up send it back
, 30 track to print lord it’s 30 to 40 mins
Totally! I normally just consolidate and export the files rather than bounce them all, but if you need the processing to be included then sending the entire pro tools session folder makes a ton of sense!
I have a full copy of pro tools and is still crap...pro tools is overrated.
Not sure how to do that, however@@malcomowenflood
I’ll make a video on it!
Great!@@malcomowenflood
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not sure 'Pro Tools' now care, more of Pro Tool now has identified another revenue stream.
It's easy. The "Best" is the one that:
a) allows you to do what you want to do.
b) YOU are most experienced and comfortable to work with.
Jumping between studios while trying to mix would be a nightmare, but for tracking it's totally common.
i think the best daw that allows you to shine and does eat up all you dollars and computer memory
@@tallawahconstance.3012A) it's imagination paired with technical application that will make you 'shine'. B) It kind of depends on the machine you are trying to run it on as to how much memory is available and what percentage of that it uses.
Ever since studio one I can never go back
protools macros.... poommmmmmmmm. all daws will die
Care to clarify?
