    The increased loudness is more about perceived loudness which is why the peak levels matched in your video. If you smash a drum loop through it you can sometimes find the peak is lower with HEAT on but just as loud, if not louder. The genius designer behind it, Dave Hill, knew just how to clip the peaks, but retain the punch. The loudness increase comes from this slight compression of the waveform and also the increase in harmonics which accentuates how loud it sounds. It's a similar process and effect to what goes on in the similarly brilliant Oxford Inflator.

    Thanks for the Heat demo. (Love the Fame Studios coffee cup btw.)

      Cheers! I got to visit Fame Studios years back for a documentary on drumming that I was part of! What a cool recording studio!

    HEAT is subtle but quite nice. I have personally found it best (for my mixes) with the Drive one notch to the left, and Tone a notch to the right. I change everything to Pre-Fader, then bypass certain tracks (typically cymbals and kicks). Hard to go wrong with something Dave Hill had his hands in. Cheers!

      Ya Dave Hill seems to have the golden touch eh! I occasionally bypass some tracks as well, but usually I see if it works with everything running first. Appreciate the comment eh!

      @@malcomowenflood I do the same thing, start with all and see how it goes. I mostly just find it a little too sizzly on cymbals. Otherwise, it’s magic sauce. Thanks for doing this video. Cheers!

      I’m surprised Avid haven’t opened it up to 3rd party DAWs by now! They seem to be sticking to their guns on that one eh!

    How did you do the vocal effect? Sound glitshty/ wobbly 👍🏼

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood  ปีที่แล้ว

      Stereo tremolo was the main vocal effect on that section, being automated more intensely as that word holds! I’ll take a look to see what else we did there but that’s the main effect there for sure!

    been using the tape mode so long that I haven't really given the tube section a fair shake... sounds like I'm missing out! Was this mix also all ITB? Cheers!

      I'm honestly constantly surprised at how much I vary my settings when using the Heat plugin from song to song - totally recommend yanking the knob around on your next mix! This mix was all in-the-box. The production was mostly too (although I did print a lot of compression through Universal Audios console plugins on the way in). I also made heavy use of the Universal Audio Neve unison plugin.
      But we did have some Buzz Audio and Vintech 1073 pre-amps running as well at various stages.
      Spent a lot of time on the engineering / prep - great drum tech, fresh skins, fresh guitar strings very frequently, etc, - was a great time!
      But anyways, that's probably more information than you wanted 😂 Thanks for the comment eh!

    i believe i like with no heat, is more clean, but is only because i'm not want to use, i think is great

      Rad! It’s definitely a preference thing imo! I tend to like dirtier, more saturated mixes, so Heat has been on most of my rock mixes since this video - but of course, it depends on the song!

  • @DaveHeffner

    Do you run heat regular or pre-fader?

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally I've left Heat on the default of Post Fader, but everyonce in a while I click it into pre-fader (seems to happen on the lead vocal most for me). I really do try to spend very little time thinking about my settings when using heat and quickly dial in something that I either like, or turn it off entirely if nothing clicks for me.

    What's your favourite "analog" mojo plugin?? 🎧

    • @galgogergo
      @galgogergo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kind of similar to this is the 'EQ saturation' option in TDR's Slick EQ - it's available for non-Pro Tools DAWs as well

    • @malcomowenflood
      @malcomowenflood  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had totally forgotten about the Slick EQ Plug-in! That’s a great tool!

    Avid Heat reduced the Kick drum, made the mix narrow. Not good.
