It's Ms. Shirley starting the engine, Yolanda bringing the calm and then Ms. Patti taking it home! I always get sooo emotional whenever I watch this. It's a beautiful, spirit-filled and mirror of the strength of Black women.
ABSOLUTELY 😂😢AMAZING 👏 🎉.! I can't stop watching it. Wish my mother, my grandmother, and aunt were still alive 😢 😞 to see this. They would have LOVED it. Also one of my closest friends Luneda Robinson 😂😢, R.I.P.
I love how Patti throws back that program 🤣 she's like sorry I'm gonna go now folks! 😅 she's just a league of her own, I haven't heard yet someone who can match that energy!
PATTI PATTI PATTI. The amount of power she has is insane she has the ability to make Great singers feel normal. As soon as she got the mic is what over.
Y’all betta sang!!!!!! I can play Patti’s part over and over! You rearranged me!! YAS! Lord. The old folks used to say “I won’t serve a God I can’t feel” I feel the spirit in this clip for real!!!!
Chaka proves over and over again why she is one of the most versatile singers on the planet. The thing is that the note choices she does is just unthought of. Her roots are jazz and her choices she do are always strategically placed. She has the highest highs and the lowest lows and everything else between. If you truly knew her catalog and knew how she's covered multiple genres you'll know what I'm saying.
Chaka slurs her words and seems to often perform under the influence of something-don’t know if it’s pills, alcohol, or something else, but she has been disappointing in the live setting for years. The voice is still surprisingly intact considering all the abuse it’s undergone, but her delivery is lacking.
@@brucep9393and as a songwriter! God she carried Motown into the 70s when they didn’t know what to do after Diana, Gladys, and Marvin left. Like her and Nile just did it so well.
I remember watching this and getting chills! The next you should look at is Patti/Dionne and Gladys singing Superwoman on Oprah. More chills. They are fire!
Thank you so much for explaining the mic toss. As a New Zealander I am extremely interested in Black Church culture. I think it’s such a beautiful art form. More of this please.
Ms. Iconic Dionne Warwick started the process with the smooth church run, smh, and then Ms. Yolanda, Ms. Gladys, Ms. Shirley, Ms. Chaka, Ms. Valerie, Ms. Tremaine, Ms. Patti, ended it! Them black legends were not playing. Oprah knew what she was doing, lol! Another good analysis bro❤❤❤
There were so many amazing voices in that field on that day……but PATTI LABELLE stood alone in her own darn field! A once in a lifetime vocal force of nature. Tears every time I watch her land that darn plane safely!!!❤
finally! so happy you spoke about the cultural background of singers who come from a gospel music or "church" environment. i've watched so many youtube review and analysis videos from those who are not of color who (perhaps) are not knowledgeable about that world, and they're always so in awe of the IMMEDIATE preparedness, and choices made by black singers. and while yes, there is still a technical aspect to what these singers do... sometimes you just (As my old choir director would say), "open up yo' mouth and sang!"
I love love love Dionne Warwick voice so much!!!! Incredibly unique and beautiful! And Gladys Knights, one of my fave! I saw her live and she didn't disappoint. Her tone is so rich💚💚 But all off these soulful aunties, magic!!! This is special! I wish I could've been there. Heaven!!!!!
You are so right about having to sing spontaneously at church. Witnessed this happening to my family members, especially my mom. She would be called to sing on the spot just because she happened to be in the audience that day😊 👏👏👏 Loved this performance and your reaction and beautiful interpretation…
I'm so glad you analyzed that video... that's how the Holy Spirit fell down in the crowd in the 80's and 90's.... our choir is keeping that Alive here in Las Vegas, NV. We really need that now more than ever!.. Amen and God bless your soul Jaron
Jaron I recorded this to my DVR and Im so happy I did. Just because many of those in attendance have passed on.. I still very much get chills from this.. Thank you for sharing..
Jaron - This was truly a blessing! Thank you for your awesome analysis; you are spot on. I am glad Oprah had the wisdom to present this ball; many of our legends are gone now.
Man, that was one of the greatest things I've ever witnessed and heard. I love watching that clip at least once a week. I love it! Nice reaction and analyzing the vocals. They're all amazing! Can you imagine if she did another Legends Ball now? Who could you see singing and in attendance now?
Yes! ….and they were BOTH invited, of course! As we know, Whitney was going through, understandable. Aretha, on the other hand, was probably just home “tripping”! Truth be told, Ree, would never have attended…believing there was only room for one “SUPERSTAR”….HER! It’s been well documented. Aretha would never be in that particular setting, because she would have to share the GLORY!
Jaron, you are amazing! 👍🏾👍🏾💕💕 I watch this clip at least twice a year. IT IS A CLASSIC. I would love to see all of the raw footage from this weekend. So many wonderful trailblazers at this event
This never fails to bring my soul to tears. I came up when if a colored person was on TV, we would get on the phone and call everyone and say ", colored people on channel # turn quick". How far we have come. Oh Happy Day❤️🙏🏾
My soul is lifted every time I listen to those great voices. Every time I watch the video I wish I had the honour to be there and dive into the live experience of Gospel sang by all these amazing voices❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for your explanations as I am trying to find my own soulful voice❣️
Oh Happy Day, that's exactly what this was, and it just keeps giving us more happy days. The Hawkins family still blesses me whenever I listen to them. So many of our artists grew up in the church back in the day and learned their craft. People didn't have money for lessons, but, the church was a training ground.
It felt like my grandfather's church back in the day when all the "voices" would grab-ahold of the mic and it turned into what we called "service." This was a nice memory 😇
If ever there was a moment in time in which I was in the room in some capacity.....serving water, handing out fans, hiding behind a tree......this is that moment. I've said that every single time I've run across this video over the years.
U apparently analyse all my favourite clips from youtube and this is for sure one of them. Love your taste in music and singers. Taking is to the church, it's amazing not to mention Goosebump alert big time.
The entire show was not released. The performances of some of the ones on stage like Natalie Cole, Tramaine Hawkins and others were not seen. Wished the entire gospel brunch was shown. Was an unforgettable event in time. Aretha, Whitney and Anita Baker were all invited but for various reasons didn’t attend
That elegant run Ms. Warwick did was seamless and confident and Valerie Simpson has a passion that is legendary. A true class act. All of them did the dang thing! Diane Sawyer seemed to be the only white person who "Caught it" and recognized it. I love it!💃🏾😇😎👌🏾🖤🔥🙌🏾
OMG...I feel...seen...I've listened to my rip of this video, every Sunday, ever since I discovered it, years ago. Didn't see Oprah's special, but I did stumble onto this vid. I listened to it this past Sunday morning and had a random thought about Jaron analyzing the greatest SANGERS, ever, and...OMG - I. Feel. Seen.! Thank You!!

Yes!!! Touches me every time!
Ms. Iconic Dionne and Yolonda started the beautiful calm. They both set that up real good🙂.
@@singingmanmd absolutely! Ms. Dionne brought in that beautiful calm, reserved, quiet yet impactful vocal presence to it as well!
@Qu33n She sure did. I love Ms. Dionne's vocal throughout her career. It is truly awesome and unique! In her prime, they were most definitely crazy!!!
"they passing the mic around, I hope they don't come near us" sweetie, believe me, they aint
LMAOAOAOAOAOAAOAO

It was just a joke for Christ sake ha

When Patti Labelle grabs the mic, the show is over! 👏🏾
I love how Patti throws back that program 🤣 she's like sorry I'm gonna go now folks! 😅 she's just a league of her own, I haven't heard yet someone who can match that energy!
The Queen of extra
Every time !! She shows out
If you notice it hit a guy in the face a few seats behind her 😂
Jonathan Reyes I have literally died at the moment for years! Hahaha
The young ones of today, I'd say, Fantasia or Jennifer Hudson
PATTI PATTI PATTI. The amount of power she has is insane she has the ability to make Great singers feel normal. As soon as she got the mic is what over.

Patti literally lit the place up; had EVERYONE STANDING
These artist are all iconic. But can we give it to for Jaron’s amazing ability to sing every style shown. I’m always blown away by your videos.
The mic toss is SO REAL. In the black church, you gone sing whether you know the song or not
I remember when this aired on tv! Somebody needs to do this again ❤
A beautiful moment. I remember when this was televised. I’m thankful to Oprah, a lot of our legends have gone home. 😢
I just commented “May those gone (who were there) RIP”💔♥️💙
I cannot listen without tearing up with emotion 🙌
One of my favorite videos
In the words of Oprah “Jesus showed up & Jesus showed out”
Dionne cut up when she got the mic. Had in me tears with only saying, “I’m changed” my GOD!
Chaka proves over and over again why she is one of the most versatile singers on the planet. The thing is that the note choices she does is just unthought of. Chaka is amazing
she’s one of the best EVER
And she grew up Catholic not in the black church. But you can see she got in touch with those roots later in her sound. She really is so versatile.
Chaka slurs her words and seems to often perform under the influence of something-don’t know if it’s pills, alcohol, or something else, but she has been disappointing in the live setting for years. The voice is still surprisingly intact considering all the abuse it’s undergone, but her delivery is lacking.
@@direfranchement I have never been to a bad Chaka concert she always delivers here
No one touches Chaka’s improvisations 🔥❤️
My favorite live moment of that decade. When Patti threw her program 5 rows back, it was on!!
This video never gets old. And will always bring chills.
This is an old clip, but it's timeless. It was Patti for me! The spirit got a hold of her.
And Shirley!
Didn't want to let go! 😂🤣😂
Patti was like “ i love y’all but y’all moving a little to slow for me “
🤣
Oprah always honored the elders! My favorite thing about her is that she gave them VIP treatment
Oprah, gave from young to old honors, something that will never be forgotten!!!...
i dont like how she got monique blacklisted and monique called on for tyler perry to help and he ignore her😑
Loved them all but Mrs Valerie Simpson (Ashford) touched my soul so much. I truly miss hearing her voice on a regular 💜 luv ya Jaron
She is so underappreciated as one of the most talented women in the history of music. I need to see her receiving tributes!
@@brucep9393and as a songwriter! God she carried Motown into the 70s when they didn’t know what to do after Diana, Gladys, and Marvin left. Like her and Nile just did it so well.

I DIDNT KNOW YOU REVIEWED THIS! THANK YOU!!!!
Thats the Hawkins singers singing oh happy day. Such a beautiful moment
*#Patti** ATE THE 🎤 MIC!!!!! PERIOD!!!!*
You have outdone yourself and me🤣. This was one of the greatest moments in television in my opinion. Thank you for this again. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I agree with you Jaron. Church really taught us a lot
From adlib, think on your feet, vocal parts, etc
Gospel is the foundation
This will always be one of the best recorded moments in life ❤️ .
Thank you so much for explaining the mic toss. As a New Zealander I am extremely interested in Black Church culture. I think it’s such a beautiful art form. More of this please.
keep in mind that this isn't regular. its not typical in black churches.. great singing yes, passing the mic around to legends, no
great singers such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, to name a few grew up in and learnt singing in (black) church.
Ms. Iconic Dionne Warwick started the process with the smooth church run, smh, and then Ms. Yolanda, Ms. Gladys, Ms. Shirley, Ms. Chaka, Ms. Valerie, Ms. Tremaine, Ms. Patti, ended it! Them black legends were not playing. Oprah knew what she was doing, lol! Another good analysis bro❤❤❤
Mamma Patti did not really go innnnnn like she could have. She said let me give this mic back before I have all these ppl stretched out.

I love that I can come here and get my vocal theory fix!! SANG JARON!!! You was singing in this video
I saw Mariah, and wasn't that Donna Summer too? That event was stacked!
Donna Summer was not there
Chaka Said SHES a recovering catholic 😂😂 she was just free-styling😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
The church elders had us emceeing programs, reciting speeches, doing announcements, praying, etc, which was great leadership training.
