My advice . Been there . Done that . Silence those Muppets right back . It effects them more . When you ignore them back they absolutely Go Crazy . They cannot handle it . Put them under your Control. Never let anyone disrespect you . Or it will get worse.

There is nothing more devastating to a small child than having a mother that gives silent treatment for an extended period of time, pretending to not even SEE the child as the child pleads for mother's acknowledgment, let alone 'love'. Thanks Mom.

This is exactly right. She continually sadistically used silent treatment when we were together in cafes, restaurants or other places. I asked her repeatedly if she would prefer to be left alone and she refused, continuing to sadistically hurt my feelings and ignoring me. These satanic creatures should be isolated from society.

Then you catch up to the tricks. The whole thing suddenly makes sense. That it's a disgusting control tactic and has nothing to do with you. Trust me, the best defense is to ignore them back permanently. They will be baffled, surprised, hurt and angry at this move. But take them by surprise and show them steely confidence they never knew you had. It will destroy them.

I spent so much time apologizing and racking my brain for what I did wrong. But the truth is no matter what I said or did, she would find ways to make me feel isolated, unheard, and weak. Silent treatment is serious torture. It made me sick and confused and I survived off breadcrumbs of attention. I pray for anyone who is also going through this. It rewires our brain, but we can rewire it back towards good health. It just takes time.

This was my childhood, up through my teen years, 20's, 30's & beyond. My parents both used the silent treatment on me. I realize now that I in turn "did what they did" on some of my boyfriends & even some girlfriends, when I felt displeasure at something they had done or not done. Time went on & realizing my prior narcissistic tendencies through seeing what had been "done to me" after I'd been in a very bad accident with a pickup truck while I was riding my bike, I now feel 'guilty' now for visiting & inflicting my frustrations & such a destructive set of behaviors upon a number of people from my past. I am so sorry I hurt some of my friends so badly.

It is so true and I am not the same person anymore. I isolate myself and feel lonely and nobody cares because they can't understand why I can't get over him. He would do this at the home every evening, otherwise very outgoing in public. Others couldn't see it based on his personality if mentioned, another minimization. Silent treatments are sick. I told my ex that one time when it happened I couldnt eat for days. There was no reaction and later on he went to do it again!! They hate you so much I really dont understand how he could have build up such resentment towards me. Ofcourse we sometimes had a disagreement here and there, but his punishments towards me were as if I cheated on him or worse.. He blamed me for having ruined many moments, with ruined he meant that I had an emotion on a particular occassion, for example that I got angry when he told me he still slept at his ex's place..

    • @MaryDunford

It's about motives. Evil people use the same strategies as healthy people, but for different reasons. A toxic person uses silence to coerce. Healthy people use it to preserve their own well-being. So, if a toxic person is silent, to a healthy person it's a gift. Whereas another toxic person will think it's a manipulation.
We're both Christian, so it might be easier to think of it as a tool of discernment: If someone treats you a certain way presume they're treating you like they want to be treated, and treat them as such.
If they're toxic, the behaviour you mirror back will anger them. If more reasonable reactions occur there's hope to build from that.
The truth can be used to strengthen relationships, if that's what both parties want. The same truth, in actions or in words, can also be used to give someone rope to hang themselves with.
Think Psalms. "Whoever digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit they have made. The trouble they cause recoils on them; their violence comes down on their own heads."
      Motivation is everything
Hope this makes sense. Stay blessed.
