Gestures vs. Language

  • For years Abbey had a few gestures that she used that I didn't really understand. Looking back, its so great that she can now attached the feelings that those gestures meant to her. I often thought of myself as a detective trying to figure out what things meant, even just words and phrases that were not clear. She couldn't describe things but most difficult was using feeling words. For her memories would pop in her head first - these are memories that held the feelings (at the time experienced) that would come before language. Such a journey. Still working on it but she is a rock star.

Abbey seems like she would be a great teacher for others with autism.

Do you know the origin of raining cats and dogs? Back when roofs were thatched with straw the straw would decompose over time. But during the decomposition of the straw it would get warm like a compost heap. Cats and dogs would climb up into the thatched roof into the warm straw. But as the straw decomposed the straw would loose it's protective properties to keep the weather out. So when it would rain really hard cats and dogs would fall out of the thatched roofs that were made weak by decomposing. And that's how it came to be called "Raining cats and dogs". 😂
PS. You two are so much fun to watch!

I love how Abbey literally “censored” people or things she didn’t like lol. That booooop sound reminds me of the censor sound on TV when they bleep out a cuss word lol.

I thought Medical School was my love in life. I went to medical school and absolutely hated it and quickly left school. Way too much testosterone in medicine and especially medical school. Best decision of my life was to leave that idea behind.

Honestly, using gestures is great problem solving. She invented her own sign language! It's just unfortunate she's the only one who spoke it 😅 I like how you brought her back to the topic, too. You're gifted, too.. Waiting for your book! 😊

We had to help Abbey connect to what her gestures meant - she couldn't express it. Try to figure out what they mean and then add words to it - might be a good way to model. 🥰

Does she like floatation spas. Or sensory deprivation rooms where you float on super salty water akin to the Dead Sea? Given her love of water and calmness, I think she might really enjoy it as a sensory reset system. I know I do.
