I'm an autistic adult and pediatric PT. I'm really disappointed to see that Abbey's mom derails Abbey's self-advocacy 90 seconds into this video. There is a time and place for caregiver participation in sessions, but mom sitting in for the entire session with her adult daughter feels inappropriate. Abbey did a fantastic job of advocating to move on from the question that frustrated her until she was ready, and you did the right thing by providing her that option and then honoring her choice, and then Abbey just gets forced into answering the question anyway. How is that affirming? It's hard to set boundaries with parents as their child's (and Abbey is an adult) therapist, but it is so necessary to do so and explain why you are honoring your patient's communication and preferences. That is step one to demonstrating yourself to be trustworthy person to your patient.

Hello! Thank you for commenting this, it provides helpful insight into rapport building and neurodiversity affirming care. I think sharing this moment is for specifically this reason, so that others can learn from it! You didn't get to see behind the scenes of Christine (Abbey's mom) and I talking and I think that would provide a lot of context. Abbey was feeling a bit tired, a bit distracted, and since I had just begun working with her, I wasn't picking up on that. Christine knows that normally Abbey would have many answers to this question, but she was feeling distracted and tired and Christine offered her stim toys to help regulate her. Of course, I had the same instinct as you and can see your point. I'm learning that Abbey does do well with encouragement and can be supported in a neuro-diverse friendly way while getting through hard-er moments.

@@support_the_spectrum I had a similar thought about the self advocacy issue. Our daughter prefers us to be with her when possible for therapy or comparable situations. We have established a level of trust with her where we will not pressure her to act outside of her comfort zone but we will and have stepped in to help her communicate when she struggles. This takes the form of us asking questing of her to help her find words for her meaning. It sounded to me like the parent at that point was doing more telling than listening though. It worked out positively imo but I feel it might have been achievable in a way where Abbey was led instead of pushed.

@@support_the_spectrum I'm not born to well-off parents like this Abbey and all these preteen toddlers from this sickening propaganda with 'autism moms' deceiving and exploiting (for sheer ego if not money) off of it.

@@support_the_spectrum I hate being it because there's nothing in my brain of any monetary use and I've spent much of my youth shut up in 'special needs' asylums unlike these 'love on the spectrum' preteen toddlers.
