    What makes Ruby’s scene hurt even more is that she probably thought that when the others turned up to save her, they were just another illusion. Because in her mind, why would anyone want to save her, the girl who ruins everything she touches?

    To add some actual sadness to the cartoon sadness:
    Torchwick was recast for his return, and tragically the new actor Billy Kametz, passed during production. That’s why there’s two voice credits.
    A difficult rewatch even now.
    Oh but yeah, the “surfing on a dinner tray” and “flaming dog baseball” show has a suicide scene. Who knew?

    Neo isn't pushy or demanding. She's not controlling and dominant like Cinder. But when Cinder starts giving orders to Neo when they are holed up in Atlas and orders Neo to go after the lamp, Neo changes to Ruby, insisting that they go after her first. And again, when fighting in Amity Colosseum, Maria demands "What do you want?!", Neo shows that she wants Ruby. The audience isn't hit over the head with it, but time and time again, we are shown that revenge for Roman's death is the main, if not only thing, on Neo's mind.

    When it comes to Neo being broken and not having anything else after her revenge, her character song from Volume 6 is called “One Thing” and better gives words to her mindset since she couldn’t actually talk in the show.

    “Torchwick was everything to her”
    That he was the pictures were memories of her life in the book about her and Roman called “Roman holiday”
    Before she was a criminal wrapped up in the end of the world, Trivia Vanille (neos actual birth name) was the daughter of disappointed parents who wanted nothing more than for her to be normal. Locked away and pushed into the shadows, Trivia has no one to keep her company. No one, that is, other than Neopolitan, her best and only friend. (Imaginary friend)
    But things change after a chance encounter with the young Roman Torchwick, a criminal on the run trying to make a name for himself before his mistakes have a chance to catch up to him. As an uncertain alliance slowly turns into a true partnership, Trivia finally begins to grasp the freedom that she had always longed for. And while her parents always insisted that Neo was nothing more than a figment of her overactive imagination, Trivia realizes that she might be a larger part of her that she ever could have guessed.
    Heck the parasol she has with her was gift from Roman. Roman was the only person who accepted her for who she is and gave her the freedom (not the best kind) but enough for her. She made the outfit he wears for as a gift.
    That’s why he was everything to her, he was her partner, and overall her ONLY true friend.
    There is more to the story in the book of course but that was just the short synopsis of it and some stuff from the top of my head lol.

I don't know why but I don't typically react to intense scenes the same way everyone else does, so it had been some time since anything made me feel so heavy inside. And I also saw Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, which is a movie all about shock value and I didn't feel anything at all when I first watched it. The sad/funny thing is, Neo is the only person that got Ruby to truely open up.
    She's been internalizing everything since Vol 3, barely opening up since (letter in V4, with Oscar in V5, herself in the mushy hut, and Little right before Neo).

  • @butterflywarrioredits
    @butterflywarrioredits 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +21

    So to get a perspective of why the writing didn’t have WBY + Jaune stop Ruby was because they wanted Ruby to think it was more of Neo’s illusions watching and taunting her to drink the tea, instead of her actual friends and family being there witnessing the aftermath. This also adds to this because moments before Neo created illusions of them “witnessing” her kill Oscar.
    Also what would you do in a state of shock of seeing your sister and teammate beaten up so much and then seconds after arrival you watch her commit magical tea suicide? That’s why this writing is so well done in my opinion because you can feel in the moment with those events and understand the narrative and the choices the team made on how to animate and write this scene out and connect to the characters and how they feel in this.

    Since Neo returned in volume 6, she always prioritized her revenge, but was delayed by Cinder's priorities.
    Even her song One Thing talks about how the only thing she has left is revenge, Neo lived in misery until she met Roman and gave her freedom and Cinder convinced her that Ruby took the only good thing she had from her.
    -In her book Roman Holiday, which many have already mentioned, her past is shown and why Neo is how we know her in the series.
    -Everything the illusions said to Ruby hurts a lot but hearing Penny and Pyrrha speak with pain and hatred towards her is heartbreaking 😥
    -Ruby told Little at the beginning of the episode that if they stayed close to her they would die, it hurts that Ruby thinks that way about herself 💔

  • @XOISHTAR
    @XOISHTAR 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +71

    A lot of people tended to forget that Neo was a villain (because even while mute she is a very charismatic character) and has been single minded in her hatred of Ruby. There’s a book that delves into her past and it shows some of what makes her so psychotic without excusing it. This episode she revelled in her revenge, but once she accomplished it she had nothing. Once she got what she wanted, she realised it was a hollow victory. And then she got possessed. If she makes it out of this, she’ll have a long road ahead of her to getting back to who she needs to be.

    • @theycallmebad
      @theycallmebad 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I personally hope she doesn't return later on. I can't see her return and everyone - especially Ruby and Yang - would be okay with it and treat her like they treated Emerald.
      Edit: and yes, a lot of people forgot that Neo is a villain. Some people like her to the point that they were happy that she was smiling when she was abusing Ruby. Ugh.

    • @XOISHTAR
      @XOISHTAR 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @ it would be drastically different, at least I believe it would be. Because of everything Neo has done in the Ever After along with her villainy in Remnant. Her redemption would be more than a single volume… and she’d have to nearly die to protect RWBY a few times to show that she’s changed sides.

    I don't know about you, but I think I can relate to how Neo feels after killing Ruby and the fact that she just feels so unsatisfied about it afterwards. After all, there are a number of characters from different anime who have fallen victim to this same feeling as well. How they just feel so unsatisfied after carrying out their revenge.
    13:02 not to mention that when Neo pretty much goes like “uuuuhhh hello, Ruby, this is the part where you get up to stooop meee”!!! Kinda showing that she really didn’t expect Ruby to ACTUALLY go through with Drinking the Tea even though she really wanted to kill her!!!

Shes proven incredibly emotionally mature since we first met her, and shes never once walked away from her teammates, she dealt with her trauma without needing to push her friends away, and now shes the one deducing what ruby is going through correctly.
    she's truly become the most emotionally stable, and observant member of the team.

    So what you're missing is actually explained in the song One Thing from the RWBY Volume 6 soundtrack. In her life, Neo had one thing she cared about in her life and that was Roman Torchwick. From her view point, having not seen the Grimm eat Roman near the end of Volume 3, She believe's that Ruby killed him because they were fighting when she Mary-poppins-ed away from the ship. There is an official book, "Roman Holiday", which explains Neo's history and how she met Roman. Then when Neo succeeds and kills Ruby, she has lost her purpose. Her entire life following the Fall of Beacon was avenging Roman. In this episode she succeeds and finds no solace or relief in accomplishing it, thus leaving her a broken shell, which the Cat made use of.

The cat has been trying to push Ruby over the despair event horizon since the beginning. It's likely the cat tried the same with Jaune, but Jaune didn't break--at least not the way the cat needed. Jaune may have pursued it in the most unhealthy way possible, but he never lost his "purpose". Ruby did, but she drank the tea before the cat could exploit it. @SublimelyGreen 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      True. But Jaune had 20+ years to deal with his trauma, even finding purpose in saving the Paper Pleasers.
      Ruby, like you said, was there for a few days. She didn't have time to truely process or grieve - on top of that, she is the type that internalizes what she's feeling - with her conversation with Oscar in Vol 5 being the only time we really see talk about what's going on with her(to a lesser extent, the written letter in Vol 4).
      Since Vol 3, all that internalization up until now, and then to be mentally tortured - her collapse was inevitable.
      Side note - we see Jaune in Vol 6 processing stuff at the statue with his teammates. Even though it's a short clip, we at least see that his teammates notice when someone is not doing well - and they help each other. Team RWBY has been shown to be the opposite in this regard.

      @@SublimelyGreen That's also true, but I wanted to point that out because Jaune was the joke character of the show in the early stage. He was weak both mentally and physically compared to team Rwby and to his team mate.
      And during the all show he was the one with more growth of all.

    Ever since her reappearance in Vol 6, the only thing Neo has wanted was Ruby. Everything she did was to facilitate that. Roman really was everything to her, that "more" that you saw was from when Roman was still alive. After that, she was only revenge.

      @Omegafire17 i would agree with you personally. im one of the only people in my circle of friends who has actually been brought to tears by rwby multiple times. including the main plot moments for ruby and neo in volume 9, but im an emotional wreck of a person things have always hit me way harder than most seem to consider "normal". Some people need thing spelled out for them more than others, some need to know more about a person before that person actually feels like a person to them, and that doesnt make them bad people. I can easily understand how many people fail to connect with neo as a person and how this scene in particular was a let down, i loved it but its also one of the most critique worthy parts of v9 imo.

    "It was horrible", yeah, in the best way possible. Ruby "offing" her off, being tortured by her past failure (even if some aren't her fault), that was so hard to watch and CRWBY have succeeded to realize an episode that really made us feel horrible, it feel weird to congratulate them for this, but I take my hat off to them (and it's appropriate with Neo and Roman present).

  • @alefb4015
    @alefb4015 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    This episode was so difficult to watch the first time and the second time seeing this just broke me down to tears. Neo really did sink that dagger into a flesh wound tormenting Ruby making her see all her fallen friends and allies and even beating her so badly leaving her with bruises and what’s worse: driving her to commit suicide! What makes this so much rotten is that Ruby told Little that if he stayed with her, he was going to end up dead…and it did happen making Ruby think that she does ruin lives and can’t save anyone! That’s so messed up!
    But what comes to mind is why didn’t Ruby tried to tell Neo that she didn’t kill Roman? And also why did Neo become so empty after fulfilling her revenge? I thought she was going after Cinder next…that was so disappointing because the whole reason Neo went after Ruby was because Cinder made her believe that she was responsible for Roman’s death! This is all Cinder’s fault!
    Also, imagine how her friends felt when they saw her commit suicide, specially Yang! She looked so broken and Jaune too because he assisted Penny into a mercy kill.
    All this time, I also believed that the cat was evil because he was suspicious all the time (I was thinking that the cat would have probably tried to possess Jaune when he arrived but because Jaune was always optimistic that his friends would come and find him, he wasn’t able to completely broke him)
    Also, seeing Neo getting possessed by the curious cat really terrified me and seeing her talk.
    Definitely I think this is the best episode but also the darkest and the saddest to watch. Neo beating up Ruby reminded me of the Spider-Man’s 2002 movie when the Green Goblin was mercilessly beating up Spidey!
    I can’t wait for your next reaction 😉

    Neo's position against Ruby never made sense. Ruby wasn't the one who killed Torchwick and yet she never voices this or explains it to Neo. At no point does she tell Neo "Hey, the Grimm did it! Take that up with Salem!" or anything to even try to reason with her. Ruby's response towards Neo about not apologizing just further cements that Neo's assumption that it was Ruby who did it or at least caused his death. Just feels like more bad writing and forced conflicts.

    I think Neo’s revenge quest suffers because the bulk of her backstory is revealed in supplemental material (Roman Holiday) like they give some tiny hints with the art in her house in this episode. She always had a one track mind in wanting revenge for Roman but the show never really got the chance to fully explore what Roman meant to Neo.

    Torchwick was the world to Neo. He saved her from a life of torture and sadness. Who's to say you wouldn't go to the literal ends of the earth to avenge their death? In the times after Vol 3 you can see she didn't care about what was going on around her. She raised eyes at Salem and the Grimm, but to her she was using Cinder to get to Ruby. But when the time came (which was even unexpected to Neo) she lost all purpose in her life.
    Don't forget, Neo is a killer. She's killed many people in the past. She came close to killing Yang and Ruby before Roman's death. Death and killing aren't new to her, but killing Ruby just made her empty after all this time. Revenge is what drove her and, in the end, broke her. At that moment she felt like she had nothing left in her life to live for.
    And Ruby, holy geez. All that physical and psychological torture that was just reaffirming the state of mind she was in. "I don't want to be me anymore," that broke my heart and felt it so personally. And after telling Little that they would die if they stuck around her and then watching Neo kill them was the last push. The spunky high-energy fighter and protector of others lost her will to live. It's so very heartbreaking.

    This is my first watchthrough of the season, and I can hardly believe this episode is real. I honestly thought the cat might be working with Neo at worst, not that it had its own completely separate and cruel agenda. To see Neo and the cat in direct opposition, and to witness Ruby, for the first time, not trying to save someone-especially someone I thought she cared about-was shocking. It’s even harder to process when you see her family and friends witness the moment Ruby does something that seems like it could end her life.
    The scene of Neo 's life effectively ending along with Ruby's-is devastating. She filled her emptiness with hatred, which ultimately lead to an even deeper void. Losing control of her own body to a demonic force is chilling. That cat is as terrifying as Salem herself.
    But amidst all the darkness, there was one moment that gave me hope: Weiss correctly recognizing that Ruby has always been the one everyone relied on, even when they themselves were down and out. As you all pointed out, Ruby is the only one who’s never had time to process her own feelings. In a way, Neo forced Ruby to confront her emotions, which, in some sense, is good. But while a therapist would encourage Ruby to accept her imperfections and celebrate her resilience, Neo is pushing her to the brink of not wanting to live anymore.
    This episode is mind-blowing. I can’t believe it’s part of Ruby’s story, but I’m all in for it.
    Also seeing Pyrrha and Penny broke my heart, part of me hoped we would find them again somehow, but it's all just illusions. It's terrifying to think how powerful Neo is in this world and what someone with more than just revenge in their mind can do with her power, I guess we are about to find out,

  • @ramirosurita7867
    @ramirosurita7867 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    And here is the second episode that I have a love-hate relationship with, on the positive side:
    - I really loved Neo, everything you said is pretty accurate, Neo at the end of the day is a villain and villains usually do bad and/or cruel things, and she has done it incredibly well in this episode, I think that the only reason for Neo's existence can be summed up in what Torchwick's illusion said, "you don't deserve to die, red, you deserve to be broken down", since Torchwick's death the only thing Neo wanted was to get revenge on Ruby, not only by killing her but making her suffer in the same way that she considered she had suffered, and she gets it, which personally leaves me very satisfied to see her fall apart when she realizes that she had nothing left to hold on to once she got what she wanted, if there is something negative to mention about this, it is that Bethany is right, it was very fast.
    - The cat, I was very surprised by that plot twist, it was something I didn't expect, and I think many didn't either 😁, both because of his change in behavior and his abilities, and of course the moment he takes control of Neo, for me that was wow.
    And now for the negative side:
    - The rest of team RWBY, here we go again, I've complained a lot about this aspect this season, but this is where it bothers me the most, Yang's line infuriates me "She could have just talked to us", really?, for basically the whole season so far, Ruby's problems became more and more obvious and yet were ignored, either because they didn't realize it directly or when they did their attention was diverted somewhere else, and it's not like Ruby was hiding them by acting normal all the time, the most obvious point was when she got her weapon back and more than looking happy or relieved, she looked worried, or did they need Ruby to have a giant neon sign telling them how she felt and that she needed help to realize it, this makes me wonder who wrote these parts and why like this? And the last thing was when the team arrived to "help" Ruby, they literally let her die, they just arrived, they saw Neo and Ruby on the ground about to drink something unknown in a cup and nothing, not a single word or checking her wounds or even trying to stop her, just nothing.
    About this last thing, I saw a comment a while ago that said that the team couldn't have done anything to avoid it because and I quote "they were too far away to reach her anyway or if they tried, Ruby would have drank the tea faster trying to avoid being stopped" Ok, I buy the explanation, let's just say that they really couldn't avoid it in any possible way, the reactions after that is what really bothers me, all the team members simply stood still with a look between slight concern and sadness, my god I saw the cat and Neo more affected by Ruby's "death" than their own teammates, the first time I saw it, I expected them to cry or react like when Blake thought Yang had died in the previous season or do the same as the cat trying to open the hole where Ruby fell and help her or at least that Yang would get furious for losing her sister, but nothing at all.

      @@imaginationequalszero7556 I mean, yeah, I know, it's true that those kinds of things happen in anime, but every time I've seen that kind of trope, there's a reaction afterwards, things like sadness, anger, one or more characters swearing revenge or running away in terror, stuff like that, but here nothing happened and personally it bothers me because at least to me, they don't feel like the characters you've been following for 8 seasons, who were shown to be united and caring and supporting each other, and it makes me wonder why they wrote them like that this time.

    • @morlock2012
      @morlock2012 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I agree with a lot of that. Ruby's breakdown, and all the voice acting going into that, is really well done. The Bad Kitty turn is effective. And I actually like the idea of challenging Ruby's role as the plucky hero, here.
      And I believe they had to cut the Volume short, which is really hard to do well.
      But the final decision to drink the tea feels rushed. Sure, the build up was there, with Little's death putting the final nail in it. But I'd have given her 10sec to go from broken to defeated. "Am I really going to do this?" it's a helluva choice, you don't go from bawling to that in a heartbeat.
      And the team are useless. The realisation they leaned on Ruby far more than they supported her was expressed badly, and I don't believe battle-scarred Huntresses wouldn't just *move* as soon as they saw Neo standing over Ruby. Shoot, run, summon, anything. I think it would have been better to have them show up just as Ruby puts the cup back down, and use the work saved to fix something else. Kicking them aromatic and the room doesn't add anything.
      And while I get Neo's whole "what am I gonna do now?" thing, I can't believe it would kick in in *seconds*.

    • @ramirosurita7867
      @ramirosurita7867 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@morlock2012 Honestly, I hadn't considered Ruby's decision to be rushed, because during the season we saw her fall deeper and deeper into depression, considering that in the previous episode we even saw her reach her limit and in this one, ironically, what she said about how if Little stayed near her, the mouse would die came true. For me, at that moment, she was already so deep that considering something like that wasn't so difficult.
      I really liked your solution of having the rest of the team arrive after Ruby had the tea, it makes a lot more sense to me that they would arrive and not be able to do anything. As for whether they would act when they saw Neo, I think they would. The only one who seemed really terrified when fighting was Ruby, the others seemed to behave normally, like for example fighting on the Red Prince's board and against the Jabberwocks, I don't know if I wrote it right, created by Neo.
      Yeah, the only bad thing about Neo's breakdown is that it was too fast, I don't know if it was a problem with the season cut or maybe they didn't plan it well, like what happened with Harriet in last season, they tried to make us empathize with her at the end because she was hurt by Clover's death but it didn't work very well when we spent the entire season 8 watching her act like an asshole without mentioning this topic at all.

And to be fair looking back…everything happened as it needed to…it hurts to watch but feels justified later as a tragic but redeemable story arc. Also you got to remember when Torchwick died Ruby was the last person to see him alive and Neo had been sent flying so she didn’t see what happened. Neo blamed Ruby without the big picture. But Torchwick was her whole world. So it’s wrong sure but her motives were understandable, even if misguided and mistakend.

    Yeah this episode is… a lot. I remember the first time I watched it. I was so tense that I wasn’t really absorbing what was happening on screen. I was just… kind of sick to my stomach with worry about how far this show might go. I remember sitting in silence after it ended, not really sure what I was feeling.
    So I watched it again. The second time through I teared up. I felt awful for Ruby, this girl who’d only ever wanted to help people and now was being punished so relentlessly by this vindictive and twisted individual.
    I want to say that as a character I still like Neo. She makes a great and truly threatening antagonist, and I understand the motive. But what she does in this episode is… it’s just pure unfettered spite and malice. And in the end it isn’t even enough. It doesn’t change anything for her. Roman’s still dead. She’s still alone. And getting revenge had consumed her so entirely that when she thinks she finally has it…. She doesn’t even know what to do. She has nothing else. She’s completely empty. Which leaves her wide open for that damn cat to make their move. Well, Neo, was it everything you wanted?
    Also, just… props to both Lindsey (Ruby) and Robbie (Curious) for their voice work. Absolutely incredible. Ruby’s gasping cries are so freakin painful, they break me every time.

    I can say that this episode really makes you feel very much a deep and hard episode that we witness story being so dark, but yet very surprising out there. It makes some reactors cry, rage, and speechless throughout the moments out there. 😵‍💫 So I like to say to a memorable moment of silence with Roman’s VA who sadly passed away during half of Roman’s performance till a new VA replace him to fullfill the belated VA role. 😞 With that said, the VA replacer did a great job and taken the right approach to voice Roman to be more depth and unique that his voice is so impressive to the OG version. As it’s like Roger Craig Smith who voice Batman in Arkham Origins with his time in the Arkham Games and gain inspiration from OG Kevin Conroy’s Batman. The time of generations in VA switch to characters are impressive and mazing out there. And it shows some remarkable performances with ranges of voices out there.

    these last few episodes a very palpable for ne and ruby. it leaves me very torn and disjointed as both are in my top 3 favorite characters of the show.(still haven't recovered from ruby yelling at Blake also in my top 3). I think its not killing ruby but more that the bond with roman ,which we only saw slivers of and only the beginning of the show, was that strong. to such degree where he was her everything and maybe vice versa. he definitely cared for her. and when he died the anguish of just getting rid of ruby who neo thinks killed him Was the next thing and a fitting thing to fill the void. but thats not a sustainable mentality to keep a person going ,so when neo killed ruby while she was alive in a literal sense she became inoperable because she completed what kept her operational. And unfortunately unless trust and repour develops between these 2 and i can seeing them being good friends more then Weiss and ruby even, i dont think Ruby could convince neo that a grim and not her killed torchwick. Unless there good friends neo wont listen.
