The reason (my opinion anyway) Jean gets chosen as leader is something missed by first time watchers. Like Ruby, he instinctively acted as a leader and a tactician. They trusted him and understood what he wanted them to do with barely any input. He's so surprised because he took control and acted as a leader without really noticing that he did it.
It's like he unlocked a thought in both Nora and Pyrrha. They're incredible. They could destroy the scorpion eventually. But Jaune simply unlocked a way for them to do it maybe in a way they wouldn't have done otherwise. To have someone with you in a high pressure situation able to give you a very quick second opinion or to reassure you in the action you were already going to take, that's so good! People can be very surprising under pressure.
absolutely this!! I missed it my first time watching as well, but Jaune was the one who noticed the scorpion's weak point, and immediately jumped to directing people where they needed to be. The others in turn trusted Jaune implicitly and did as they were told, working as a perfectly seamless team. If anyone other than Professor Ozpin had been watching, I'm sure Pyrrah would have been selected to lead the team, but Jaune (much like the woman he was based on) has incredibly natural leadership skills.
Yeah, there are two major points in the series that do this. This episode, and the final third of Volume 3. The latter in particular is the make or break point, emphasis on “break”, and for good reason. I won’t say why, because spoilers (by the way, everyone, please stop spoiling the future in the comments), but I’ll say this: RWBY Chibi was released after the end of Volume 3 for a good reason.

I always loved how very integral Weiss was for taking the Grimm down, showcasing the flexibility of her abilities AND Ruby's perceptiveness to them. Aside from being fast in general, she froze the Nevermore's tail to the ruins to keep it grounded, provided the "trigger" for Ruby's slingshot move by keeping her in place and aim properly, and put her glyphs on the wall to give Ruby the support and traction needed to drag that bird up the cliff. Ruby had barely seen Weiss and Blake use their combat styles, yet she was able to put them together into a working plan during active combat, on the fly, and with someone who she only just had met being the lynchpin for it.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Yes. Soundtrack always after a volume. The music of RWBY is deeply woven into the story and lore. The 'World of Remnant' shorts are always useful to watch, but the timing is very important. I don't have a link but there are listings of where in the series to watch each WoR short to maintain the writers' intended information flow.
The leaders of RWBY and JNPR aren't the strongest members but rather those particular individuals able to come up with a battle plan on the fly....they're the analysts and thinkers, and Ruby continues to be a prodigy.
Really great fight scene. We will for sure continue on to season 2. Taking it season by season and as long as it holds our interest we will keep watching 😀
Hearing Red Like Roses Part II on Pandora is what led me to this show so having it be the backing track for this episode always makes it special in particular for me when I see others react to this show. This was the point where I knew I was going to watch this from now on and now with Volume 9 on the horizon I can't imagine my life without this show. I hope you guys learn to love this show as much as I do as the series continues.
If your interested, there is this anime that came out a couple of months ago called RWBY Ice Queendom. It's kind of an AU side story that really delves into Weiss's character. It's not bad. Though I would recommend waiting until you've seen at least the first episode of Volume 2 before checking IQ out to avoid any spoilers.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 You're welcome, but I have to make a slight correction. Need to wait until the second episode of vol. 2. Forgot about a certain something in that one.
There's a little detail I quite like that some people overlook in the team leader selection - Jaune and Ruby were the ones calling the shots in their respective fights, which is why they're chosen. It's not exactly highlighted in the episode, but I appreciate that they put the thought in.
THIS episode. I ADORE this one. So much is done right. The music hits hard, the teamwork is fantastic, the transitions between combatants and even fights is superb. Everyone is useful and important. The enemies are stronger than what they've faced before, but just within their combined limits. I still hold Players and Pieces as one of, if not the best fight in the whole show.
I remember hearing from someone that Monty Oum the creator spoke about the characters and their reactions if they had been made leader instead, Yangs stuck out to me the most, she wouldn’t accept the role due to her wanting the freedom that comes with being a huntress, she wouldn’t want the responsibility of having to take care and lead a team Don’t know how accurate this is, just a conversation I remember from long ago.
Welcome to the episode that is the make or break. This is the episode that for people on the fence up until now, is what will usually rope them in. It's a showcase of what Monty Oum (may he rest in peace knowing his dream lived on and transcended life and death) could do with fight choreography. But as you two said, it also gives some first real looks at some of the other characters. Nora is a fantastic character. Trust me when I say, if you like her here, you're gonna absolutely love her throughout the show. I mentioned before that in the trailers, Weiss was my favorite. She struck me as the kinda quiet, shy girl and I'm very much drawn to those types. Plus, she absolutely had my favorite design by a very large margin. Magical rapier, the dancing-like fighting style, the singing, plus just her general look. When episode 3 happened and she was... well a rich spoiled brat, I was very much taken aback and spent the next few episodes just HOPING Weiss would come around and be more likeable. Her saving Ruby here and acknowledging Ruby as being capable and also acknowledging somewhat her own flaws was very much a welcome development.
In this ep we are properly introduced to the Nevermore grimm, as well as Cardin who is based on Henry Beaufort, and his teammates are just various birds. Also those cards Roman gives the grunt is this world's currency calld Lien.
There are 3 stages to the RWBY Fandom. You guys have just reached the 2nd one. RWBY trailers: gets you interested. Vol. 1 Chap. 8: gets you hooked. Finish Vol. 3: Welcome to the Fandom. Going to enjoy seeing your journey through this ride.
The Song that starts up around here 9:20, is called “Red Like Roses Part 2” and it’s one of the stand outs of this season, it’s a duet between Ruby and her mother.
As many people have probably already said, this was the episode that generally wins people over that may have still been on the fence. It definitely won me over. Monty’s action and the Williams family’s music? Masterful. Ah, the broken moon. Truly one of the most asked questions of the show. Personally, I like the aesthetics of it.
RWBY is always nice to see, though i did stop when Volume 2 was done, and only watched like maybe 2 episodes of Volume 3, but beyond that, never watched it, hope to see some more and i hope one day you get to see some of Monty's older vids as it would give you an idea on where RWBY came from
Double post but seeing this again years later reminds me that we were robbed of a truly gifted man in Monty. I didn't know about this show until it was just finishing Volume 3's airing, so I didn't have any attachment to the guy as a creator, but I cannot deny he was a prodigy and one of the best in the animation department.
Hi DnD, This chapter is typically the one that hooks most in the show. Humor, action, and heartfelt scenes in this chapter makes it one of the best. Glad that you enjoyed it just as much. Looking forward to your other reactions. Have a great day!
Happy to see you guys engaged and enjoying the series! Curious to know if you guy intend to react/compare to the animated version of this fight from the "ice queen" series. As people who didn't grow up with the series, i think your reaction would be interesting.
I'll admit I was very surprised to see you guys start reacting to rwby. Seemingly with the intention of watching it all if you liked it! But now, to see you guys really delving into and liking the characters... I'm gonna watch every second of your reactions. The characters are why I like this show. In fact, they make it my favourite show. For me, rwby is a show where you follow two teams of teens as they go through monster-hunting school; it's a character-driven show. It hits a spot for me to see these characters go through their moments, each having themes and attributes which become greyer over time. or sometimes, to see them fail and knowing myself why they couldn't save the day. Have fun!
Ruby has to be one strong little girl. She ran up a cliff while dragging a giant Nevermore. That bird might have weighed as much as two thousand pounds. And she made it look effortless.
@@DarthDragon007 You're forgetting Gravity Dust. Setting up her plan, she very likely switched out her ammo for it. That would give her a massive boost in propelling her and the Nevermore up the cliff.
@@chb2551 I didn't forget about it. But, unless it was an animation error for both the magazine and the muzzle flash/sound, Ruby wasn't using Gravity Dust rounds and was using just the normal rounds with whatever Dust they use.
Ahhhh, I love watching this episode every now and then, so many good memories. Don't be fooled by this episode, Weiss has a loooooong way to go before her "heart is thawed" lol. There are so many more amazing moments coming in this show and I can't wait for you two to see them. Also on the topic on the moon, lets just say some questions take a LONG time to be answered ;).
Ren and Nora are one of my favorite duos, but you have a bit of time before you'll learn more about them. And Weiss isn't quite in redemption territory yet, she's still going to be pretty rough around the edges for a bit. You'll see, they really tried to ease into her thawing out lol.
Now unless I am mistaken in recollection that Nevermore (the giant Raven Grimm) had been in control of that territory for years killing lots of Huntsmen and Huntresses that had been sent after it. And I mean professionals not academy students that thing was like a tier 1 threat this goes to show how powerful the team is without them actually realizing it. Also just wait until you see and understand what some of gangs semblances are aka their superpowers. Nora's is still my favorite semblance and character.
Fun fact. Team JNPR are not based off of fairytale characters. Rather they're based off of historical/semi-mythical people. Jaune is based on Joan of Arc. Pyrrha is based on Achilles Nora is based on Thor Ren is based on Mulan All people who at one point in their stories passed as the opposite gender
There's just so much... environment! But that was Monty Oum's style. With RvB, Dead Fantasy, Rwby. It's dynamic. Destructive. Mobile. Absolutely crazy. Fantastical. But physically weighty. Anyone can learn to animate, but what he did was something more. To have been in the room with him while he worked! Monty
Ruby is a little bad ass i wont give spoilers but many of the questions you have will be answered as the show goes on being Ruby's sister Yang knows what Ruby is like as well as what she is capable of, but Ruby is an introvert so she is not good with people she does not know
Just a fair warning since you two tend to go through the comments on your videos - RWBY reactions tend to get spoiled by people who can't seem to help themselves. They don't understand that implications of moods, foreshadowing things that the show doesn't, and other such things all alter the way a show is viewed and can even lessen the impact of key moments in the show. I highly suggest having one of your Patreon members that has early access and is familiar with the show be a moderator for your comment section so that you don't get spoiled. This show has moments and even entire episodes that are hugely impactful and tend to be surprising and full of hype when people get to experience them without expectations, it would be a shame if you were spoiled.
I love when people get to this episode. This is usually the make break point for people to decide whether they like the show or not. Just an awesome chapter.
My favorite character has always been Jaune and this has some great moments for him, showing that while he might not be the best fighter he saw how to different people could best combine their skills to take out enemies.
Why the moon is broken is only answered later on in Volume 6, and I don't think anyone was expecting an answer to be honest, we had already accepted it, at least I had.
I may have said this before, but Welcome to the RollerCoaster known as RWBY. Hope your ready for Thrills, Chills, and even a touch of Horror! For a show put together by a bunch of self-taught not quite amateurs, with supposedly poor writing and initially subpar animation, its amazing how quickly people fall in love with the characters and the (ever evolving) art style of the show. Don't let any of the self-styled "I could have done better" anti's fool you. It's not perfect, but it is Damn Good!
Why is the moon like that indeed. Though there's never really been a direct answer, in the world of remnant, the moon's waxing and waning cycles are stylized as a moon that breaks and disintegrates when waning, and reforms when waxing.
I already knew that there was some serious representation with the chess pieces, but after doing a bit of research just now, holy heck. Team Cardinal got the black bishop piece, which represents not only the "bad side", but also the church, power, the established order. It is not surprising they become minor antagonist to the light-hearted RWBY and JNPR. JNPR got the white rook piece. From a wiki; "... makes the rook a formidable piece in a chess game, but that power often takes several turns to carefully develop from their starting position." Jaune's powerful aura allows him to train far harder then anyone else, but he's such a poor fighter right now that Phyrria will have to carry him for a while until he can get his feet under him. I assume I don't need to explain the White Knight piece.
@@malcolm_p yeah, the fight scenes that Monty Oum himself worked on were amazing. He will be missed. But the work that the rest of team CRWBY does is also pretty good.
@@malcolm_p he also did some of the fight scenes in Red Vs Blue starting around, I think, the end of season eight or the start of season nine. But RWBY is his pet project. He also made some fan crossover animations which are what got Rooster Teeth's attention. They should be on TH-cam "Haloid" and "Dead Fantasy". They're basically short fight sequences that showcase his style of fight choreography.
*WEAPONS* - Nora's Magnhild (maul + grenade launcher) *MY COMMENTS* - Fun fact: the members of Team JNPR (Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren) are all based on legendary figures who cross-dressed at some point (Joan of Arc, Thor, Achilles, and Mulan).

The 'World of Remnant' shorts are always useful to watch, but the timing is very important. I don't have a link but there are listings of where in the series to watch each WoR short to maintain the writers' intended information flow.
This will be the day we've waited for!
This will be the day we opened up the door!
To more RWBY, that is.
😎🤟🥳
The leaders of RWBY and JNPR aren't the strongest members but rather those particular individuals able to come up with a battle plan on the fly....they're the analysts and thinkers, and Ruby continues to be a prodigy.
Fun fact, the cliff run that Ruby does is the basis for her Astral Finish in the fighting game BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle
Awsome early fight scene huh, glad you guys are liking this and hope you watch it all! It only gets better
Really great fight scene. We will for sure continue on to season 2. Taking it season by season and as long as it holds our interest we will keep watching 😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 truly hope you get to see it all ❤️ always love your content Bethany and Ken 🥰
I really like Ruby and Yang, but Nora is my favorite. Love that girl.
Thanks for letting us know when to check it out to avoid spoilers 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 You're welcome, but I have to make a slight correction. Need to wait until the second episode of vol. 2. Forgot about a certain something in that one.
There's a little detail I quite like that some people overlook in the team leader selection - Jaune and Ruby were the ones calling the shots in their respective fights, which is why they're chosen. It's not exactly highlighted in the episode, but I appreciate that they put the thought in.
The episode that made me fall in love with this show, way back when I was a little kid. The nostalgia and the sadness all coming back
☺️🤗
The amazing reactions of an amazing series continue!!!
😎🤟🥳🤗
And now you can see how nora's more closer to Thor now....hammer time
THIS episode. I ADORE this one. So much is done right. The music hits hard, the teamwork is fantastic, the transitions between combatants and even fights is superb. Everyone is useful and important. The enemies are stronger than what they've faced before, but just within their combined limits.
I still hold Players and Pieces as one of, if not the best fight in the whole show.
btw; the song from 8:40-11:13 is red like Roses part 2 by Jeff and Casey Lee Williams , your heartet pt1 in red trailer.
And here you have one of the best episodes of the entire franchise.
😎🤟🤩
I remember hearing from someone that Monty Oum the creator spoke about the characters and their reactions if they had been made leader instead, Yangs stuck out to me the most, she wouldn’t accept the role due to her wanting the freedom that comes with being a huntress, she wouldn’t want the responsibility of having to take care and lead a team
Don’t know how accurate this is, just a conversation I remember from long ago.
11:36 ruby this right here is the opposite of normal knees lmao
The Song that starts up around here 9:20, is called “Red Like Roses Part 2” and it’s one of the stand outs of this season, it’s a duet between Ruby and her mother.
As many people have probably already said, this was the episode that generally wins people over that may have still been on the fence. It definitely won me over.
Monty’s action and the Williams family’s music? Masterful.
Ah, the broken moon. Truly one of the most asked questions of the show. Personally, I like the aesthetics of it.
If you keep watching you will find out why the moon is like that.
😎👍😀
Such a good one. Glad you're enjoying the series and looking forward to your future reactions.
Thanks! 🙂😀
ooooooh cant wait for your reaction to the whole show, youre in for quite a ride. Hope you two enjoy! :)
Thank! So far so good. It almost always gives us something fun to discuss after each episode 😀
Been waiting for yall to react to this episode!!!! *grabs some popcorn and settles in*
This is the episode that made me fall in love with this show. I can’t wait to see you guys see the rest!
Hi DnD,
This chapter is typically the one that hooks most in the show. Humor, action, and heartfelt scenes in this chapter makes it one of the best. Glad that you enjoyed it just as much.
Looking forward to your other reactions.
Have a great day!
And yet, is only a scratch on the surface of what is to come.
Happy to see you guys engaged and enjoying the series! Curious to know if you guy intend to react/compare to the animated version of this fight from the "ice queen" series. As people who didn't grow up with the series, i think your reaction would be interesting.
We’ve been told to wait until after season 2 to check our Ice Queen as it may have some spoilers 🤗😅
This is usually the episode that hooks people on the show. It did for me.
High caliber sniper rifle pushing them up the cliff
Unless their .50 BMGs are as powerful as actual our artillery, it wouldn't be possible to do what Ruby could and use the recoil to move faster.
Luckly she is young with a strong aura since the recoil from her sniper would severely degrade her joints over time lol
This is the episode that really sets the hook, enjoy the ride.
This is one of my favorite episodes. It got me (as well as a lot of other people) hooked on the show
I also highly recommend checking out Dead Fantasy at some point, it was made by the same guy who was behind RWBY.
Yup. We do plan to check that out at some point 🙂
The soundtracks for each volume -- FlintofRWBY vids/lyrics and later; Sirs&MadamsEntertainment are the best to react to!!!
1 of my favorite episodes of this volume. The fight scenes are fun and unique. This episode gives you a good idea if what to expect out if this show
Fun fact. Team JNPR are not based off of fairytale characters. Rather they're based off of historical/semi-mythical people.
Jaune is based on Joan of Arc.
Pyrrha is based on Achilles
Nora is based on Thor
Ren is based on Mulan
All people who at one point in their stories passed as the opposite gender
The action in the earlier seasons were perfection.
😎🤟
There's just so much... environment! But that was Monty Oum's style. With RvB, Dead Fantasy, Rwby. It's dynamic. Destructive. Mobile. Absolutely crazy. Fantastical. But physically weighty. Anyone can learn to animate, but what he did was something more. To have been in the room with him while he worked! Monty
@@arcadius2569 you actually got to work with him?!?!
If you aren't hooked by this show after this episode, you may not ever be. This is the lock-in point.
Woot, more RWBY. Let's gooo
😎🤟🥳🥳
8:55 I love how in unison you two are!!!
Ruby is a little bad ass
i wont give spoilers but many of the questions you have will be answered as the show goes on
being Ruby's sister Yang knows what Ruby is like as well as what she is capable of, but Ruby is an introvert so she is not good with people she does not know
Just a fair warning since you two tend to go through the comments on your videos - RWBY reactions tend to get spoiled by people who can't seem to help themselves.
4:25 Edna: This is why I say NO CAPES!!
And they beat the tutortial bosses! =D
I love when people get to this episode. This is usually the make break point for people to decide whether they like the show or not. Just an awesome chapter.
Also I don’t know if u guys know but yangs shotgun gauntlet sound is the shot gun sound in the video game halo
Probably one of the best episodes of the series and Red Like Roses part 2 by the normal RWBY song artist and her mother added more to it
My favorite character has always been Jaune and this has some great moments for him, showing that while he might not be the best fighter he saw how to different people could best combine their skills to take out enemies.
Why the moon is broken is only answered later on in Volume 6, and I don't think anyone was expecting an answer to be honest, we had already accepted it, at least I had.
“Why is the moon like that?”… listen, we waited SIX YEARS for that answer
uhhh... If you wanna know about the moon. You´re gonna have to wait for volume 6 :D
Long way to go. But we will look for clues along the way 😅🧐
Before Monty died he voiced Ren. Now i think its his brother who does Ren.
This Eps imo is usually the one that either gets people to love the show or not be interested.
Consider us hooked 🤗
Oh lol just went up
🤗
Idk if anyone said it already but they legit made an anime recently.
Omg I'm so excited to see your reaction 😭❤
Hope you enjoyed it ☺️🤗
I may have said this before, but Welcome to the RollerCoaster known as RWBY.
We are enjoying it so far. If it can entertain us while giving us something to think about and discuss after then it’s a show that works for us 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Oh it will definately entertain you, and..........oops venturing into spoiler territory.
Why is the moon like that indeed. Though there's never really been a direct answer, in the world of remnant, the moon's waxing and waning cycles are stylized as a moon that breaks and disintegrates when waning, and reforms when waxing.
what happened to the moon? Oh, you just wait you’re in for a ride.
🧐😀
I assume I don't need to explain the White Knight piece.
i never watched RWBY but i heard some good things about it. Gonna binge watch your reactions on it lol
I mean, it has its weaknesses, but it's overall a good show. It's worth watching it and forming your own opinion.
@@SCP.343 ah i see. Either way, it looks kinda fun
@@malcolm_p yeah, the fight scenes that Monty Oum himself worked on were amazing. He will be missed. But the work that the rest of team CRWBY does is also pretty good.
@@SCP.343 i apprieciate a good anime fight scene. Very sad to hear about Monty
This episode is so dope
4:04 Apparently this is the only time in the series where Ruby's Cape gets stuck.
*WEAPONS*
- Nora's Magnhild (maul + grenade launcher)
*MY COMMENTS*
- Fun fact: the members of Team JNPR (Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha, and Ren) are all based on legendary figures who cross-dressed at some point (Joan of Arc, Thor, Achilles, and Mulan).
This was so much fun. I like this channel so much. I know there is a lot of RWBY to tackle but I hope you guys stick with it, this is my favorite series you guys are doing right now besides Helluva Boss.
Going witth penny's explination of Ruby's semblence this means at this point in time she was moving fast because she could gradually reduce her mass and to speed up. later it evolved to the point where she could completly reduce her mas and sepeerate herself?? hmm maybe im wrong not sure . its early in the morning.
Finally here, this is the one that sells the show.
Yes the moon is actually destroyed in the show and you’ll find out how that happened in awhile haha
At least it wasn’t something we missed and just didn’t remember 😅🤗
The 2 leaders just had to bump into sky into a tree.?....
You know they’ve only done 3 out of the 4 characters from RWBY in Death Battle
The trailers and music were cool but what really sold the series in the beginning was the Deathstalker/Nevermore fight. It was the sickest thing we’d seen in a while.
As far as your question about the moon it won't be answered by until Volume 6
Man it’s a whole crazy thing with the moon just wait it’ll blow your mind
Ever seen Kim Possible if you think about it Juan is the Ron Stoppable of RWBY.
Yay first . also just to let you know because ive seen a few people confused ruby and yang are half sisters rubys mom is passed yangs mom is be seen later and her dad to who youve seen before but they share the same dad also i would recomend listening to neon and rising by casey williams the voice actress and the singer for the show.
Spoilers. Even if they’re beyond this episode at this point in time, I’ve seen someone else comment that they’ve never seen the show. Don’t spoil for ANYONE
And this is just the get to know phase for all the characters. The real character development will come over the whole series. Do yourselfs a favor. when you reach the last episode of the last season that is so far out, look back at these episodes and see how far all of the have come in character development. Its was really something when I compared them the first time. Otherwise greate reaction like always. Keep 'em coming. :D
Told you you'd love these episodes.
