One of the hardest parts about watching Ruby and Jaune go after each other is that they’ve always been the ones to have each other’s backs. Even back in volume 1, Ruby tried to help Jaune see that he was good enough when he was being bullied. Then in volume 4 when Ruby was apologizing for dragging them into a mess, Jaune told her that she didn’t and she actually gave them courage to follow her. Until now, they’ve always supported one another.
They’re both hurting so much and just don’t know how to express it right now.

I think the most heartbreaking part is that Blake was just trying to do for Ruby what she admitted in V8 that Ruby had done for her; remind her that not knowing what to do doesn't mean that you can't do anything. She told Ruby that she looked up to her for reigniting her belief in being able to change things, and here she's trying to pay that back when she thinks Ruby needs it...but, unfortunately, Ruby isn't in any state to hear that. Blake's reminding her of how she used to be, and it only made her feel worse.

Also one clever thing they did. You can see through the couple of last episodes. That it was always Ruby to fix the situation at her expense for everyone else to progress. She had to give up the Pennys sword to the knights to be let into the castle. She had to give up the medalion with her mothers insignia to the teapot lady so everyone can grow back. And everytime she was about to voice her mind she was interupted by either someone else or something. And even now in the last scene when she voiced her feelings Jaune went ahead and one upped her with the burden of having to kill to kill Penny

As heartbreaking as the end of the episode is, it’s completely understandable that the two who snap this badly are Jaune and Ruby. Because they both have been holding on and burying their own issues since the fall of beacon. Ruby especially, since she had the most pure and romanticised idea of being a huntress. But nothing has been like what she expected. It’s been darker and scarier and painful and the adults she thought she could rely on either went crazy, weren’t there, weren’t who she thought they were, or was too broken to actually shoulder the responsibility they put on her. So after eight seasons of being the beacon of hope, she’s now lost in a different realm/someone she loved died/a mute criminal is hunting her down and messing with her head/and Jaune has snapped out of guilt/trauma/and paranoia. She hits a wall even before she gets her weapon back, and now thanks to Cinder and Neo… she’s triggered by the sight of it. Because she’s been fighting for so long and she’s the youngest of them, and now she’s finally feeling how broken she has become and they expect her to fight more monsters. She’s experiencing cPTSD on top of her grief over Penny, and she’s not the only one. Jaune has been having a similar experience just with chances where he could deal with his emotions thanks to Ruby being competent (and before her it was Pyrrha giving him the breathing room to grow) but then he had decades of being in the Ever After with his shame and guilt and grief, but he held on to hope so tightly he became brittle. Almost like Ironwood (his heroics at the papertown was all about trying to control the outcome, just like Ironwood was doing in Atlas), but unlike Ironwood he shatters instead of hardens. And when faced with the inability to save someone again after years of struggling to keep them alive, he lashes out at the one person he thought would have gotten it… because she was supposed to be a leader just like him.
And that’s not even touching on the whole deal with the paper pleasers

Miles and Lindsay gave the most incredible performances of their respective careers (thus far) with the emotional outbursts this episode. Granted Miles was always one of RT's powerhouse performers from the time he joined the company, but we so rarely got Lindsay content where they weren't playing the optimist or goofball.

Ruby literally carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. Shes always tried to stay positive, but after so many hardships and the "failure" of the escape plan in Vol 8 which brought her close friend to die for a second time her mental state just broke. How can you save the world from a force that cannot die? How many more are going to die for that cause? I imagine Ozma felt the same way. He had many, many lifetimes to come to terms of his purpose. It's only been, what, a year at most since Vol 1? Not any time at all.
Ruby is now at the point where she's doubting herself and who she is. She always wanted to be a Huntress, but now at what cost? What sacrifice? Her mother died for all this. Shes been hurting ever since in so many ways. And when the point tipped and broke she lashed out at the ones she loves, as i would imagine anyone else doing. She's spiraling, and well, we're not done with the season yet...

Gotta say I am rather surprised on how Ruby "calling out" on Yang and Blake's finally getting together felt humorous to you. For me personally, it was the one of the most hurtful parts of Ruby's breakdown for two reason:
    1) Ruby and Yang love each other so much and have always been supportive of each other in every situation
    2) Blake have been the one with most admiration for Ruby and her leadership throughout the series.
And now when Ruby breaks down, Blake instinctively takes a step back and hides behind Yang and Yang steps forward to protect Blake from her own sister! That have always been beyond hurtful for me to watch...

We now have confirmation that Cinder Fall is still very much one of the primary sources of trauma and terror within Ruby Rose, right up there with Penny and Salem. In fact, most of the heroes' trauma throughout the entire series has been because of Cinder, which makes sense as Cinder is the main villain. And given how Cinder has conflicts with virtually every character, I doubt that the series will wrap that up within 2 Volumes. I reckon we still have a few more Volumes at least before the final battle with Cinder and the end of the series.

  • @WTFSciences
    @WTFSciences 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

Everytime Ruby expresses her feelings, something or somebody (here Jaune) takes over so we kind of neglect her. It's always been so and it shows how she was given the purpose of being the symbol of hope while she's clearly just ruby :(

Well, now we know why the bodies of the people Cinder blew up in Volume 8 were never recovered: many of them burnt up in Cinder's flames during the descent. In Ruby's flashback of Cinder, we see several bodies of those she had killed fall while consumed in balls of fire behind her. There were, of course, also bodies that fell that weren't on fire, but the Ever After is so weird and unknown that the corpses that survived being burnt to ash by Cinder simply fell to a random part of the realm and were never seen again. Or they could have disappeared another way, since all manner of things are possible inside the Ever After.

One of my friends had a weird theory actually. Something Im not sure I can believe but is also hard to disprove. What if Alyx/Louis are actually some of the "bystanders" that were knocked off the bridge as well. It's clear people don't really fall "in order". So... what if Alyx and Louis fell so early that Alyx came back and wrote the story "Before" they fell?

My personal theory is that only living beings are taken to the Ever After when they fall into the void, and all those people were killed by the blast, and also, a fun detail, if you watch the sky closely during Jaunes time reversal, you can see theam RWBY falling, reversing the order shows they fell in the same order as in the void, more or less, the only outlier is Neo, but her falling later is probably just for narative purposes, maybe she caught up to her umbrella and slowed herself down before becoming the coloured meteor that everyone turns into when the enter the realm from above
or maybe i just missed Neo in that scene, hard to even see ruby's meteor with the bloom from time reversing

Most of them died in the explosion, the series explained before that normal civilians don't evolve their aura or unlock a semblance because they don't train to, so they're not resistant at this point. Just like Jaune in volume 1, he didn't even know what an aura is.

@@RyderDunei Another interesting theory, and certainly plausible given how it’s impossible for any sentient being to truly “die” in the Ever After, as they get automatically pulled into the Tree and reincarnated. The amount of vitriol and poison that this ep made spew from the RWBY fandom was not fun let me tell you.
15:55 the moment 15 years of baggage and unaddressed hardship and pain spilled out... right in the face of the ones she didn't want to attack with it the most.
16:25 I still say Yang did nothing wrong here, sue me.
16:44 Jaune's VA (Miles Luna) was utter perfection in this scene and deserves more praise for it!
17:00 She knew he was, at least partially, right or she felt that he was at least.
17:37 Many hated Blake for this, her trying to gloss over this and try to stay positive and Ruby reacts this negative because, in essence, they have switched places now. Blake became Ruby in V1, hopeful and positive and Ruby became Blake in V1, closed off and trying to hurt someone to be noticed. Blake tried to imitate her at the worst moment because that what hurt ruby the most... seeing the difference in growth between them.
19:56 PERFECTLY put. We need to teach people to accept "It's okay, not to be okay" and not see it as a weakness or a failure

One of my favorite bits of trivia I learned from the blu-ray commentary was when they were trying to decide what Jaune had been doing during all his years in the Ever After. According to one of the writers they were tossing ideas around and then someone was like “well he can’t have been doing nothing. That would be so disappointing.” According to them there was this beat of silence in the writers’ room and then someone said “yeah, that sure would be pretty disappointing.” These absolute evil geniuses.
But damn, Miles and Lindsey absolutely killed the voice acting this episode holy shit. Absolutely crazy.
It’s such a complicated thing you know. Obviously to the audience we’ve know Ruby hasn’t really been okay for a while. But there was always a bigger plot happening so there was no time good enough for her to feel like she could fall apart. And even here in the Ever After, she’s trying to keep everything together. When any of her team tries to broach the subject she refuses to answer or they get immediately side tracked into something.
And it’s even harder when you add Jaune into the mix because his own trauma is so in your face and loud, that even when Ruby does express herself finally Jaune pulls the focus away from her.
And this isn’t to downplay Jaune’s own trauma because he’s also got so much of it. The dude has always had a bit of a hero complex (“I don’t want to be the idiot stuck in the tree I want to be the hero” to paraphrase). But now that need to be able to save someone is interfering with another culture’s way of life, making him act as if he knows better than the Afterians that actually live there. It’s just messy, bestie.
On the plus side… the Bees are more in sync than ever. That choreo was super smooth.

One thing that someone pointed out that stuck with me, is how Ruby's feeling of being ignored kept getting compounded. Just this episode alone, everyone realizes that something is wrong when she's afraid to grab Cresent Rose, but as she's about to answer the pebble tower falls over and everyone goes to comfort Juane. Then when she let's it all out, Jaune again makes it about everything he's gone through and places more weight onto Ruby. In the previous episode, when Ruby begins thinking everything is pointless, Yang tries to remind her that that's how Ironwood thought, but she was cut off by Juane telling rushing them along. In the forest, Ruby is clearly down, and she starts to open up to her team, when Yang tells about the cat going missing.

What Blake was doing was trying to be an acting leader
We see it in the opening
She clearly can see that Ruby isn’t doing okay so she doesn’t ask her to help or prod instead she tries to take some weight off
You also have to realize that Blake is being 100% earnest in telling Ruby that things will be okay
This isn’t the same jaded broken Blake
Ruby and everyone have changed her life for the better

Somehow something always happened and WBY couldn't properly talk to Ruby in Ever After, plus they always saw her as an almost unbreakable pillar of hope and positivity, this moment was a reality check for the team, they put a huge weight on her shoulders and did not help her carry him, they neglected their friend and leader.
Ruby doesn't need to be told that everything will be okay, she needs to get it all out and sort out her feelings. It is very painful that he has reached this point but it is very necessary to heal his broken heart. 😥

I think I have a love-hate relationship with this and the next chapter, on one hand I enjoyed this chapter, because it always reminds me that at the end of the day Ruby is a person and like any person at some point she can break under pressure, and that's what just happened, the same goes for Jaune who has also had to go through a lot and unfortunately had to vent his anger and frustration, mainly against Ruby.
and the other hand that bothers me a little is that at this point I don't feel the team as it was before, throughout the series I've seen the team become more and more united, supporting each other in the most difficult moments and overcoming them, being Ruby the one who, let's say, tried harder to keep the team together, but now that it's her turn to receive the support of her team, it didn't happen, it didn't matter how obvious her situation was becoming, she was practically alone throughout the whole process, I haven't seen the Yang who cares for and worries about her sister, or the Blake who said how much she esteemed and appreciated Ruby or even the Weiss who supported her friends, it's basically what Ruby said: "no time, right?, gotta go home, gotta help Jaune". Ok, maybe I'm being too demanding, but personally I find it strange to see a team that I considered so united act like this. I hope I've explained myself well.

Ken & Beth, I don't have much to add to what you two said about this chapter. Or the comments here, as varied as they are. Just that this chaper had so much, it was as heavy as any dark moments of the series so far. At the heart of this, we have the two most hopeful & positive people in the series finally broken to the point of nothingness emotionally. 😢
It was ugly, bitter, and very painful to watch!! And maybe needed badly.... But, how Ruby and Jaune will deal this?!? And the rest of the team as well???
What comes next...... Is something you will have to see. Til then, have a fun & safe New Year's, everyone!! STAY GOLDEN INTO 2025!!!

Neither Jaune nor Ruby were entirely right nor wrong. Jaune is still trying to cope with ending Penny, even after all the years he's been there. Likewise, Ruby has in fact been focusing on everyone but herself, which is unhealthy; there needs to be a balance. That said, Ruby thinks forward, but does not adapt her initial plans well nor pre-meditate alternatives when something goes south, she questions herself until someone brings her back into focus.
However, Jaune is having a go at Ruby for a plan he supported and agreed to follow; no one, not even Salem, factored Cinder and Neo into the grand war of Atlas. Cinder was the wildcard that tilted the scales. Without Cinder, Ironwood would never have lost his mind, Winter would be the Winter maiden, and Salem may not have the relics right now.

Her reaction would be similar to mine. unfortunately she Had to tell the other fav Blake to shut which kinda hurt but still. Something to note by the way how ruby and blake swap places in a way. Blake in the early volumes was the pessimist and ruby was the optimist and towards the later volumes they have switched. both Ruby and john both spoke truth each are the reasons that this arguably is best volume.

    Several things must be considered:
1- Ruby has been traveling after the fall of Beacon almost a year and a half ago, she didn't have time to reflect like Yang, Weiss or Blake.
2- I entered a secret war when I was only 15 years old.
3- During the fall of Beacon he saw his sister lose her arm and the death of Pyra and Penny was only 16 years old.
4- He found out that the enemy he faces could be his mother's murderer.
5- saw what salem does to the silver eyed warriors don't forget something else
and Jaune gives up for having killed penny and fear

I enjoyed your reaction, you guys! Like you said, it’s not easy to say that you’re not okay and I agree with you that this is what Ruby needed. I think that it was good that she finally let out how she was feeling, although she didn’t do it in a healthy way, but I understand Ruby: she’s been through a lot throughout the whole series and it makes me angry that none of her friends and sister realized how she’s been feeling (except for Little, who noticed that she was so serious while the rest of them were discussing Jaune’s mental health)
This episode was so hard for me to watch it the first time. I know it sounds rude, but Ruby telling Blake to shut up, felt like a way of telling them: stop dismissing me and my feelings!.
Honestly, I feel really bad for Ruby for everything she's been through... all the trauma she's been through and that started near the end of volume 3 and counting the fact that she lost her mother on a mission:
-Volume 3: First, she finds out that her supposed new friends (Cinder, Mercury and Emerald) have been her enemies and their betrayal fills her with sadness, since she and her team were disqualified because Yang "attacked" Mercury, then, she saw how one of her friends accidentally killed her other friend (Pyrrha vs Penny), then, she sees her friends hurt and Yang with her arm cut off and witnesses Cinder killing Pyrrha and with the Grimm attack, she loses her school and she and her team split up (not to mention that during the course of volume 4, all of her friends somehow have some time to themselves to try to cope with the pain, but she continued on with the mission because she felt it was her responsibility to do so as a leader that she is).
-Volume 4: She learns that Tyrian was ordered to capture her and saw her uncle poisoned.
-Volume 5: Then, upon arriving at Haven, she learns of Lionheart's betrayal and that he had several hunters killed behind the heroes' backs.
-Volume 6: Then, through Jinn, she learns that Ozpin has been hiding the fact that Salem is immortal from them and that he has no plan to stop her.
-Volume 7: Upon arriving at Atlas, she discovers that Penny is once again alive, but by hiding the truth from Ironwood, he emotionally shuts down with the goal of only saving Atlas and leaving Mantle to his fate and discovers that her mother, Summer, confronted Salem and possibly died at her hands.
-Volume 8: She broadcasts her live message to Amity for help to arrive, but her plan fails. She then discovers the Hound's true identity as a faun with silver eyes and sees what Salem plans to do with her and that that was the possible fate of her mother. She then falls apart when Ironwood threatens to blow up Mantle and her entire plan falls apart and to discover that Penny is infected with a virus that will make her self-terminate and then comes up with a rather complicated plan to save the citizens of Mantle and save Penny's life and keep the relic safe, but her plan falls apart with the intervention of Cinder, who makes her fall into the void and loses her weapon. -Volume 9: When reuniting with her friends, she learns from Weiss that Penny sacrificed herself and ends up fainting. Then, during the auction, she no longer has enough hope to fill a flask when she discovers one of Penny's swords and offers it as a gift to the Red Prince, only for him to dismiss it and kick it away without Ruby being able to recover it. Later, during the Herbalist illusion, she is unsure of being a huntress, then during the market scene, she meets the blacksmith who offers her to choose a different weapon to “lighten” her load and ends up giving up her mother's emblem in order to get an ingredient for the parfait (and none of her friends told her anything about her giving up her emblem like that). Later, Jaune reveals to them that Cinder managed to get hold of the two relics and her plan to save Atlas also failed and discovers that her sister Yang started a romantic relationship with Blake (which leads her to think that her friends don't care enough about her and assume that she's fine and she's not, not to mention that she's the youngest of her team), and reacts angrily when Jaune returns Crescent Rose to her since it reminds her of the fact that she failed as a huntress and as a leader, so that in this new episode, her friends are more aware of Jaune than of her and during the attack of the Jabberwalkers, she has a panic attack and sees Cinder (who she couldn't stop), sees Penny (who she couldn't save and lost again) and sees Salem (who she knows what she can do to her and what she did to her mother) and is aware that she knows that Neo wants to finish her off and to top it off, when the JabberWalker is about to devour her, her friends ask her to cheer Jaune up when he loses his friends (at that moment I thought: are they serious? Did they really expect her to be okay when she was almost devoured?) and especially because afterwards Jaune yells at her (it was very unfair of Jaune to put all the blame on Ruby, when it wasn't just her idea, it was everyone's idea in the Schnee Manor although he was right to get angry with Ruby for calling the Paper Pleasers as make-believe friends) If he had to blame anyone it was Salem and Cinder) and then Jaune steals attention from Ruby when that was her moment to let it all out to have her breakdown so he can fall apart too in that same scene.
Poor Jaune, I know he has also suffered a lot from everything he lived through, but it still makes me angry that Weiss, Blake and Yang paid more attention to him and don't notice how Ruby feels (for Pete’s sake, she is the youngest of all and being a leader is a very big responsibility for her)
Poor Ruby. She's been through a lot and I really don't blame her for falling apart the way she did, she's obviously given signs that she’s not okay and her friends seem to not notice her mood and assume she's okay when she's not (she's the one who always lifts others up, but no one lifts her up the same way she does with others. Heck, no one ever comforted her when she learned that Penny died!). Poor Ruby, Jaune talking to her like that was the straw that broke the camel's back and there's nothing left of the cheerful and optimistic girl she was since volume 1.
Sorry if my comment is too long, 😅 but I also loved the song “Trapdoor” because it reflects on how Ruby is feeling, it’s so sad but I like this song as well.
Get ready for the next episode, because it's going to be the most painful and difficult one to watch, guys.

Now I could go all day as to why I dislike this episode so much. But I will just say this, I do not like at all how they handled Ruby's mental breakdown. I’m a little annoyed with her breakdown
I just don’t like the placement out of it
V8 had a lot of great Ruby and friends moments
Yang pushing away her trauma to support Ruby in volume 7 and 8 took a lot of heart and paired with the summer conversation not including Yang despite Yang being the child who remembers her
Blake finally being at peace from her inner demons and admitting to Ruby that she’s always looked up to her
The vault bridge plan wasn’t all Ruby it was a very cumulative project with Whitley and Weiss being extremely important
And Weiss and Ruby were generally cute in v8
I just think that if she was to have a breakdown about people not caring about her it should be about more than 2 days where her friends aren’t perfect and trying to leave fairy tale purgatory

Rewatch a few earlier ones and you will see just the small changes to this moment
