I agree with most of the advice - better time management, being patient, maintaining control, no draws, better opening preparation and playing in open tournaments against GMs. I personally like to see Levy playing dynamic openings like the Dutch Leningrad. He hinted at playing the Sicilian but it didn't happen. It frustrates me when Levy plays a standard opening but then tries to be creative and go for fresh positions but it is clear he hasn't studied the positions deeply enough.
I disagree, I think he did study the positions thoroughly hence why as Hans said he gets into such great if not amazing positions, the problem is the psychology. Yes, Hikaru did say he doesn't believe Levy will be GM (not because of skill, but because he has commitments other than chess). You can clearly tell the difference between a GM and Levy. 16:19 This is so true. People need to understand that Levy is by far the most known chess player in the history of all of chess, ever since the chess boom with the QueensGambit and PogChamps 1. TH-cam and Twitch has made it so even the most casual chess player/viewer can go watch a high level player; while, Magnus might be the best. He doesn't have the recognition that Levy has for the casual player. Only real, serious, competitive players know who Magnus is, but regular average casual chess viewers, know who Levy and even Hikaru is. Levy needs to use this to his advantage. He can literally get invited to any chess tournament in the World, he choses to play in, if he really wanted to.
But that is also the problem. The fact that Levy is so well known means that he as to deal with a level of scrutiny that his opponents dont have to deal with in tourmanents. In other words Levy is going into these tournaments with an handicap and giving his opponents a psychological advantage over him. This is an a huge issue that Levy is going to have find a way to deal with if he wants to become a GM. IMO the only way for Levy to solve this problem is for him to completely untethered himself from the internet/social media for the duration of the tournament if he wants to have any chance at winning.
I think mostly all casual chess players would know who Magnus is, what makes you think casual chess players generally don't know who Magnus is? He is widely referenced by many chess content creators very frequently, not to mention Levy has been creating a lot of content with Magnus lately. I don't think that take makes sense. I'd say both are recognizable but Magnus is more prolific within the community. And I think mostly anyone who plays chess, even casually, know both players. On the flip side, I think there are substantially more NON chess players who know who Magnus is, and doesn't know who Levy is. Jeansgate had all kinds of random people posting about it on social media, chess and nonchess players alike, for example.
@BrocPage You people will never get it. Levy is not known for his analysis on Magnus or all other Top Super GMs. He's known for his contributions in PogChamps 1, ChessBoxing commentary, GuessTheElo, etc. by people who barely know how the pieces even move. He's also extremely known for his infamous saying, "Sac the ROOOK!" in TikTok, Shorts and Reels. This is also why Hikaru is more known as well than Magnus. Twitch, TH-cam, Pogchamps 1, etc. Also, Hikaru is extremely know for his infamous catch phrases off, "Bro, thinks He's Hikaru" or "TakesTakesTakesTakes". People comment these on even random videos that doesn't have to do with Chess at all. You don't get it because you're stuck in your little chess bubble.
@ What makes you believe that consuming PogChamps 1, ChessBoxing, and GuessTheElo content means you do not know who Magnus is? Anyone who consumes chess content will absolutely also be introduced to who Magnus is through the algorithm or simply by Levy himself. Levy has mentioned Magnus in a video title 38 times in the last 4 months. You know why? Magnus gets views. You seem to think I'm challenging whether Levy or Hikaru are well known. I'm not. I'm challenging the specific claims that: 1) Casual chess players generally don't know who Magnus is. 2) Only real, serious, competitive players know who Magnus is Both are patently false bud.
@MasterInHD you almost contradict yourself. Not only is Magnus extremely well known, occasionally even making mainstream news, but you claim casuals who know Levy dont know Magnus while Levy puts Magnus in 90% of his videos.
Not everyone might appreciate such strong advices, but I’m genuinely thankful for it. I’m not a titled player, and I’ve felt the impact since I’ve been making similar mistakes myself. It’s rough, but it’s exactly what’s needed. Hope it’s helping others too.
The hippopotamus has two different auditory systems. They use their little ears (above water) to receive sound waves in the air. This is a truly great video. I'm really lowly rated but, one thing I noted was the psychological impediments that are preventing Levy's talent to shine. He took a suggestion that came from a few of us to hide his opponents name and rating and his own rating has shot up. There is no doubt he can do it, he is super talented but, with quite a few things to work on, pick the top three you have highlighted. 1. He needs a serious repertoire. 2. He needs to manage time better. An interesting stat would be the number of games he is losing from having an advantage out of the opening. 3. He needs to select his tournaments more carefully. It's so obvious you can make an amazing difference(no disrespect to his existing coach) that I really hope he follows through in his tweet. He definitely can do it 🥊
Hans coaching Levy is the biggest thing Chess needed, since Hanz was considered the Villain and levy is litterly the HERO of chess!!! HOPE THIS HAPPENS!
I'm ready for this new arc, Hans realising that he can have his own Hikaru redemption arc where he can turn what people don't like about him into content
Solid advice particularly about what kind of tournaments you should take. You have enough money to really pick and choose where you go and who you play. Playing strong underrated kids hungry to win with no chance at GM norms doesn’t make sense.
I agree, if anything he could afford to host his own invitational tournaments and exclude players below a certain rating - in fact I'm sure a lot of other 2200-2500 players would love the opportunity to play in such conditions too
Where Levy stops, it's the manifestation of something in his thinking going wrong. Whether something steps in to block him or perhaps his thinking approach just doesn't work in some cases, it's hard to say. Is there a common thread to the positions where he stops to think? I call that "mental zugzwang". It usually has to do with a player running out of real plan ideas or the Initiative stops. It seems like you have to start over. It's often connected to a dynamic player not handling slower static positions well. Quiet play is a lot different than dynamic Initiative-seeking play. Hans repeatedly saying, "He's losing control" is indicative of the quality in Hans play which is lacking in Levy's. It's the ability to play positionally without freaking out or losing some edge. Levy, and perhaps many lower titled players, are used to rolling their opponents with superior opening play, capped off quickly with some sharp tactical play. That's almost Levy in a nutshell. But, he does have some other skills, just not GM-level.
Your mind works in such an incredible and dynamic way, but I think it’s sometimes hard for prople to keep up when you shift gears so quickly. If you could slow down just a bit, it’d help me follow along better. Keep that brilliance coming, though!
I only started playing chess 2 years ago and when I started there were so many negative things being said bout hans that as a naive newbie I just believed. My actual experience when watching hans talk and play is that he is absolutely incredible in levels of thought and creativity combined with an ability to keep it simple when required. He clearly loves the game and has a kind and caring heart. Took me too long to get on the hans train but now I'm here and here to stay!
The negative things don't need to have been false, for positive things to be reasonable now. It even makes the most often objective and cheerful GM Niemann 2025 more a pleasure to listen to. There was a smeagol-gollum phase of discussing normally and then the other guy would come back to spoil things, but maybe that's finished. It would be a good thing.
Funny that I didnt think Levy could become GM, but as a 1950 FIDE player myself and after seeing all of these things Hans speaks about (unnecessary risks, poor time management, tournament selection) not only do I believe Levy has the chess strength to do it, but I am also invigorated that all I am lacking is chess strength cause I am WAY better at all these things than Levy is AT MY LEVEL.
Doing bad or lucky moves fast isnt better time managment that doing good moves slow. I'm your level, and you saying you are better at time management that Levy is like a home cook saying hes better at cooking a dish than a chef, because he did it faster, but worse
You can believe what you want I am honestly not here to argue but if you take 7 mins to play Re8 and 20 mins to play a4 in those positions you are clearly BAD at managing time. Not even critical positions lmao.
17 minutes of talking very quickly and the entire video was still very intriguing and informative. Hans has a genuine skill at breaking these things down.
Much of the fun with Eric Rosen is that he plays many dubious openings and traps that won't work at the GM level. I'd rather have Rosen continue his niche. Not everyone needs to be a GM.
Amazing video. Hans, thank you for partnering up with Levy and creating this content. Would love to see more analysis of his games and what he needs to improve to become a GM.
Time management is really hard, but fun as well, I've noticed that just like in math, your subconscious does a lot of the work. I regularly find myself thinking of really strange moves without knowing why I would play them, but after some analysis I find there was something interesting with those moves. The same thing can happen in sports and math, maybe art. I'm sure everyone has had this feeling. Infact everyone does it when they read text. I wonder what would happen if some of these IM's or GM's practice blind chess seriously for some time, could they learn something different?
Magnus is too petty for Levy to be able to work with Hans. It'd kill Levy's chess opportunities for the future. Magnus would try to have him blacklisted.
Idk Hans has managed to stay relevant despite many committees siding with Magnus and omitting Hans from candidates or entering tournaments. I doubt Levy, possibly the second most famous chess player to Magnus himself, would have any issues if he truly did wish to pursue it.
I don't think this project would even be on Magnus radar - Hans is only really likely to drag levy up to a 2500 GM level so it's not like he would suddenly be a threat to Magnus rating, and especially so when you need to achieve the title through classical chess which carlsen isn't even really paying anymore
I actually really do appreciate this video from Hans, this was really insightful and should be helpful to Levy. I do hope he gets the chance to see this
He definitely is. If he wasn’t then he wouldn’t walk out every game saying the nerves got to him. He has had a better position in almost every game and fumbled it because of stress
Totally agree with the drawing aspect of things and how it could produce bad habits. Also think it reasonable to verse GM's to gauge the level and adapt to it.
Hans directly pinpoint to the super main keypoint for 2300 player to go GM.This may be just an advice, but if you REALLY look deeply on it,this will change your chess skill, forever. He clearly mentioned on 1. Correct thinking procees 2. Confidence on your judgement will affect your play as a whole Some of his words like "step-by step" ,"the position will win by themselves" ,is definitely the KEY. Hopefully, got more of Hans coaching in the near future ❤
Honestly, I never would've expected this given all the history. And I agree with the takes about psychology and playing in different tournaments. And you can also tell from his Titled Tuesday streams that the assessment regarding blitz w/o increment is spot on. I really hope Levy gets over himself and talks to Hans.
I’ve always thought Hans has a hyper inflated ego, but his charity work and stuff like this changes my view a bit. Maybe there will be a point where I’m fully rooting for him because honestly it would be amazing to have an American World Champion.

This is the first Hans video to come in my feed and I thought this was gonna be drama. But this is good analysis and good advice that seems genuine. I feel like I owe you an apology. Keep at it!
Keep crushing Hans!! You will be world champion!!
Talk to Levi directly - in a mature/friendly tone - “I advise you to …”
yeah, you also did so - but do it consistently next time 🥳🍻
Hans opened into the world of chess as a heel, but I've always liked him and lately he's been an awesome, raw and unfiltered voice and incredible player and I hope everyone moves forward into future kicking ass.
He's inspired me to start playing again, I retired after lockdown thinking why am I putting so much effort into tournament and league chess when I can just play online with zero stress or inconvenience but Hans passion for the game and his unbreakable will is something you don't really see in a lot of other grand masters (at least not in the surface, I'm pretty sure inside every single one of them has the heart of a killer when it comes to chess but they keep it hidden)
I'm not. I'm challenging the specific claims that:
1) Casual chess players generally don't know who Magnus is.
2) Only real, serious, competitive players know who Magnus is
Both are patently false bud.
They also use their large jawbones to conduct waves underwater, and can judge distances based on the latencies in the arrivals of these sounds which helps them navigate underwater
Great insight
Yo mama so big, she has two different auditory systems.
Hans i've been rooting for you for 2 years now! As a Canadian construction worker who doesn't know shit about chess, I respect the fire you have for chess, and wish you good luck in your future endeavors!
I agree, if anything he could afford to host his own invitational tournaments and exclude players below a certain rating - in fact I'm sure a lot of other 2200-2500 players would love the opportunity to play in such conditions too
for the love of god, please get a HQ camera. :)
Agreed, and mic.
always these complainers.. cant you just appreciate a thing?
I know it has nothing to do with the video but if your life is full of anxiety and fear of the future, pls go and ask Jesus for help.

hans is the only chess player with any fucking personality love him or hate him at least he makes the game interesting
Hans Niemann is the hero we never knew we needed
Your mind works in such an incredible and dynamic way, but I think it’s sometimes hard for prople to keep up when you shift gears so quickly. If you could slow down just a bit, it’d help me follow along better. Keep that brilliance coming, though!
Yeah rooting for this, and also teaching others helps you also in your goal.
The cow milking the farmer
Last call with the GM tournaments was actually super smart. Good video man
Nah, this Hans is actually very sigma
What a positive turnaround by Hans! Gotta respect him, he is the only chance we have to see Levy becoming a GM, and hopefully Levy takes this advice.
15:00 Psychology 101. @GothamChess DO NOT SURRENDER AND SHRINK AWAY AS A BOTTOM TIER LOBSTER :)
This seems like great advice to me. I would love nothing more than to see Levy learn from the man himself!
Wow actually some great points in there. Good job Hans very civil and respectful criticism.
Lmfao, I guarantee you’re not
You can believe what you want I am honestly not here to argue but if you take 7 mins to play Re8 and 20 mins to play a4 in those positions you are clearly BAD at managing time. Not even critical positions lmao.
17 minutes of talking very quickly and the entire video was still very intriguing and informative. Hans has a genuine skill at breaking these things down.
Maybe you should try to make Eric Rosen a GM.
It will bring less views, but definitely will produce a better result in the end.
isn't he already a GM?
@fuatoezarslan5903
No, an IM.
Much of the fun with Eric Rosen is that he plays many dubious openings and traps that won't work at the GM level. I'd rather have Rosen continue his niche. Not everyone needs to be a GM.
Great advice Hans!!! I hope Levi will take this to heart because I think you can really help him in so many ways.
Blacklisted from what? Commentary on some tournaments? I don't think Magnus has much power over Levy
Idk Hans has managed to stay relevant despite many committees siding with Magnus and omitting Hans from candidates or entering tournaments.
I doubt Levy, possibly the second most famous chess player to Magnus himself, would have any issues if he truly did wish to pursue it.
@@fangiscool1What about Hikaru though it could affect on their bond
@@al87221 money over everything for both Hikaru and Levy. I don't think either will care unless their wallet is affected
I do hope he gets the chance to see this
I don't think Levy is even bothered about this.
He definitely is. If he wasn’t then he wouldn’t walk out every game saying the nerves got to him. He has had a better position in almost every game and fumbled it because of stress
@@Wshilighlights facts 💯
@@Wshilighlights If he is, that lack of humility is holding him back. You gotta be honest with yourself to improve.
This was absolutely phenomenonal advice. Great video, i really hope levy sees this.
Bro dedicated his time to Levy. Respect
Totally agree with the drawing aspect of things and how it could produce bad habits. Also think it reasonable to verse GM's to gauge the level and adapt to it.
Hans❤😊
Hans directly pinpoint to the super main keypoint for 2300 player to go GM.This may be just an advice, but if you REALLY look deeply on it,this will change your chess skill, forever. He clearly mentioned on
1. Correct thinking procees
2. Confidence on your judgement will affect your play as a whole
Some of his words like "step-by step" ,"the position will win by themselves" ,is definitely the KEY.
Hopefully, got more of Hans coaching in the near future ❤
For a 21 year old, Hans is wise beyond his years
Honestly, I never would've expected this given all the history. And I agree with the takes about psychology and playing in different tournaments. And you can also tell from his Titled Tuesday streams that the assessment regarding blitz w/o increment is spot on.
I really hope Levy gets over himself and talks to Hans.
Love this, Hans!
Wow, this is amazing. Kudos to Hans, great video.
Great commentary!
Hans being positive and respectful is something I never thought I'd see. Please keep this up
That's because you were duped into thinking he's something he's not, as you blindly followed narratives like a sheep.
@@daygrindmike8913 um no, it's because i've seen his attitude (which has hopefully changed) not only in shorts and reels but also on his own channel
good logic... if you're gonna lose, lose against the best and learn from it ...
I’ve always thought Hans has a hyper inflated ego, but his charity work and stuff like this changes my view a bit. Maybe there will be a point where I’m fully rooting for him because honestly it would be amazing to have an American World Champion.
good eval hans but we want you number 1 first then worry bout GC. We need to dethrone Petty Carlson. im 1700 ill teach GC for now LOL

Hans : "Just put the fries in the bag, lil bro"
this video alone is gonna get me 1500 -> 1700
Great coaching Hans!!! Absolutely no one can look at the engine arrows and question marks!! If Levy doesn't hire you, he will never be a GM
Let's go Hans!
Hans you are really great❤❤
"The hunger games" that took me out 😂😂. Also Hans this class cover photo does not match the visuals😂
That was an amazing well put video Hans. Your analysis and suggestions were on point.
