    People shouldn't be intimidated by a lot of credit cards. I have 18 activate cards, it maybe takes 15 to 20 minutes a week to manage them while I'm watching tv.

      I keep my spend to anywhere from 2-3 cards at any given time.
      The rest of my cards sit in a sock drawer.
      I have phone notofications set up every time a purchase on ky cards is made, that I can catch card fraud quickly.
      This approach works great for me, and requires maybe 10 minutes a week to manage.

      I have maybe 5-6 cards (mostly amex MR and bofa for cash back) that my wife and I are spending daily on, and maybe 1-2 that we are using on plastiq to hit signup bonuses, and the rest are mostly sock drawered...
      The way that I am able to easily keep track is, all cards I set them to autopay statement in full each month, as soon as I get a new card. Meanwhile I add all cards in my household to mint which I used to create a monthly budget so I can make sure we never overspend beyond our monthly income... Nice thing about mint is, it automatically assigns all transactions to a category and you can see how you are tracking against that budget in real time on your phone or computer.

    I’m actually between quadrant I and II. Sticking with Amex Gold but use BofA rewards + Discover for non-multiplier spend. Haven’t got a single Chase credit card because the effective annual fees of the AMEX alternatives (CSP = Gold, CSR = Plat) are always lesser.

    Managing the player 2 strategy is the key to expanding the game. At some point your moves will become increasingly limited and you need that other player to take advantage of other paths or in this case quadrants.

    Low spend more cards. No rent at my parents' place lol. Already have my mom authorized on my BCP to get discounted groceries. Asside from raw sign up bonus value, I do think there are enough varried free cards to rival the preminum %back, so im slowly building out a large card base for any potential future spend if I were to move out or be more free with travel.

    Great video, would love to hear your ideas for 2 player strategies. One question I have: why is it that amex points are considered best mainly for business class or first class flights? Are using Amex points on lower class flights with partners a poor redemption value?

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Harder/more sweet spot focused. Example economy redemption of Bangkok to Ko Samui I've used:
      - Bangkok Airways is the major airline (owns the USM airport and have majority of the flights)
      - prices range from $200 to $250 roundtrip typically (per person)
      - you can transfer Amex MR to Etihad and book for 5k per way (so 10k, per person)
      - 10k MR + ~$5 fees vs. $250 = easily 2 CPP
      The main issue is that these are more nuanced topics and aren't as "sexy" as flagship F/J products.
      I'm debating on covering these on Sebby Fung (2nd channel) vs. Ask Sebby but will happily post on either if there's enough interest :)

    • @szearc
      @szearc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ask Sebby I think that could be interesting. Would be awesome to see a mix of both travel experience footage videos (showcasing the aspirational trip) but also if you shared the actual details of how you used rewards to cover costs, with the spreadsheet style cost breakdowns based on spending vs points etc. what points you used, what cards, etc. I would totally watch those kinds of videos! Although they'd be alot of work to produce, and true they might be a little more niche I think they'd be both fun and educational... Might be nice for a longer video format

    The setup I'm working on is halfway between many cards and few cards on the high spend line. Looking at building out 8-9 active cards, plus the store card (pre-Ask Sebby) and old cashback card I hang onto for credit history. Mostly a Chase and AMEX duo setup and then a couple of airline co-branded cards and 2-3 premium hotel cards (as keeper cards). The all total includes 2 general premium travel cards and maybe 1-2 premium hotel cards. I geared my setup to pickup the best cards to cover all spending categories long term and able to use all the benefits (credits and such) with in a set travel budget. Not totally bonus hunting for cards in case I either need to buy a house again or job transition with a pay cut. Great video Sebby with a lot of strategery going on!!! :P

    @asksebby I have a noob travel reward question. I am looking into a trip to Rome Italy round trip for 2. I looked at two options (Aeroplan & Avios). With Avios flying Aer Lingus it would be 79k Avios + $750 and for Aeroplan 120k miles + $181 flying with Swiss. Both flights if booked normally it would be around $1700 for both options. Witch one would you consider to be the better deal or are they about equal in terms of value?

    Hi Sebby, I just got a withdrawal taken out of my bank account for my first ever credit card. I applied for the Discover IT secured card, as I am barely establishing credit. I had done tons of research, as well as watched hours of videos reviewing the card. (I even called the customer service number to have em answer some questions for me). I’m excited and all, but I am a little worried. I’ve noticed in your January update, “What’s in my wallet” you seem to no longer use the Discover IT card? Its a concern to me, as you have suggested before to hold on to a card for Its AAoH. Now knowing that you usually recommend Chase, Amex, and Discover I’d like to know how can I safely transition from my Discover IT, to something more like Chase without it effecting my Credit History, or is that inevitable?
    Should I even open up a second card, like Capital One within the next month or so to keep the inquirers effect low? (Benefit my future self is why i’m considering the second card)
    I’m trying to build a base but if these cards are going to become useless as I age, shouldn’t I just go for something more beneficial?
    A video on this subject would be great for all newbies like myself, but a thorough reply is awesome too.

    When you say High spend, what's your rough definition of that? For instance, my spend report from Chase told me I was just shy of $35k in charges, does that qualify as "high spend" in your rubric? Putting a monetary threshold on that rather subjective language would help clarify a lot for folks I think...

They aren’t as bad as Credit One, but for an introductory card I’d prefer one from Discover or BoA.

    • @szearc
      @szearc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think capitalone venture is basically a solid bottom right quadrant or bottom left quadrant card.
      As a bottom left quadrant card, you can use it basically like a 2% cash back card on everything plus 10% on hotels. com... and put all your spending on the one card. I know a couple people who have only one card and got the Venture card. The points are at minimum worth 1 cent per point by using the "travel eraser" function, but capital one also introduced transfer partners which also gives you the flexibility to save more money on flights.
      Alternatively, as a bottom right quadrant card, even without making it your daily spend card, you could use it mainly for the signup bonus and accumulate those points as well on hotels .com only and use the points for travel eraser or transfer partners.
