Sadly, one “friend” of me, thinks that BeamNG is a crashing simulator, where the *ONLY* goal is to crash your car and that’s it. I’m really sad about this and the devs really should think about that side of BeamNG. Another problem is, that almost all pictures, banners and posters (from from 3rd party and ads sites) of the game are outdated. So that everyone thinks that BeamNG has no good graphics and cars. Great video by the way!

I think the main reason for BeamNG being seen as nothing more than a crash sim is predominantly because that’s how they initially marketed the game in its pre-alpha and current alpha stages. Racing, accurate vehicle driving dynamics, and other qualities came later and were only advertised to an extent. Of course influencers just showing off the crashing physics do play a part as well.

    • @KeeganYF12
      @KeeganYF12 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

I'm not so sure. I don't think the early marketing for BeamNG is even relevant now, since very few people are aware of just how old the game is. It's more popular now than it ever has been, independent of the early marketing.

    • @LILKRANKIN
      @LILKRANKIN 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +58

@@KeeganYF12 Tbf recent marketing doesn’t do it justice either. The 2019 tech showcase and showreel mostly featured crashes over driving characteristics of their vehicles. It’s their game and they can market it however they want, but they only really show off the driving physics to those who are dedicated fans.

I remember years and years ago when BeamNG was brand new and sort of obscure that their whole marketing thing was that they were the one of the first sims with realistic damage rather than just applying a handful of fixed animations to a car
The origin is long forgotten but in the game of telephone that is TH-cam where the obscure niche meme will eventually trickle down to algorithmic AI garbage, that’s what sticks in minds

Back in 2013 or late 2012 I picked up a free tech demo for BeamNG back when it ran on CryEngine 3. Young me at first really did think of it as not much more than a physics idea. Then I grew up, and along with that I’ve been with BeamNG through every update. My tastes changed and along with it the game. I spend the vast majority of my time in the game rallying and simply just hitting the road usually with music or a video playing in the background. When I returned from the military I was diagnosed with PTSD and oddly enough a great way I relax is with this game. I don’t mindlessly crash cars anymore (most of the time) but now I have such a deep appreciation for this game. This game also contributed heavily to my utter love for engine, gasoline and wheels. I work on cars irl now and am saving up to start my own rally project car.

FailRace does some fun Beam videos. A lot of them take advantage of the game's unique damage simulation as something to add greater challenge. Stop the Beast is a favorite example of mine, where he'll choose a really beefy truck and try to escape from his friends who are driving several smaller vehicles. Pursuants whose cars become too damaged can reset, but they be gotta race from their spawnpoint to rejoin the fray; if FailRace himself is damaged to the point of being undrivable, he loses. The point for everyone is specifically to AVOID crashing (unless it's a tactical kamikazi by one of the hunters), but the very fact that vehicles can not only amass damage, but simulate very specific damage with unique side effects - such as snapped steering bars, leaky oil pans, flat tires, etc. - makes it a much more interesting and tactical competition.

I think really one of the best TH-camr's for BeamNG is Jimmy Broadbent. He doesn't play it very often, but being that he is an experienced racer in sim and on circuit, he's able to really push the cars well. To improve the entertainment value without deliberately crashing, he will often pick scenarios or challenges that are outside his tarmac driving skill set, such as a rally stage, or offroading. This leads to plenty of very entertaining mistakes, without taking the focus of the video away from the actual driving dynamics of the vehicles.

I bought the game because "The Crashing Simulator" back when the driving physics were only good enough to get you to the next crash.
I got to 1100 hours more recently in the game because actual driving. Exploration, cruising, and hotlapping are my current favorite activities.
I've felt genuine thrills when discovering objects hidden in the foliage in Jungle Rock, or finding a boundary break and wiggling my vehicle into the Farlands. I've also gotten that goofy grin when I nail a tricky corner perfectly.
I've found boundary breaks in Johnston Valley (the famous "400 polygons next 8 miles" fence gap to the salt flats - keep going and you'll get into the Farland mountains), ETK Driver Experience (the barricade at one end of the highway has a gap, this map's Farlands are VERY fun as you end up driving on the floor of the world ala the Gridmaps and the distant mountains don't have collision), and Automation Test Track (throw a crawler at the mountainside near the dam - you'll need it to get around up in those mountains). I've also flown the river valleys in Italy's Farlands with my Wingeon and crawled up the side of the Cliff.
I'm working on finding ones in West Coast and Hirochi Raceway. Should see if I can find one in Utah too. I haven't played East Coast in a while and don't know how breakable that map is. IIRC Hirochi and ECUSA re heavily forested and impassable in most larger offroading vehicles. I didn't realize boundary breaks were a thing in that many maps until recently.
There's also a semi-break in Industrial, where you can get over the barricades blocking the ends of the small bridges with a capable enough crawler. This'll open you up to miles of sprawling grasslands. I hesitate whether to call this a true break. You can also just drive through the "ditch" with a Wydra.
You owe it to yourself to fly Italy's Farlands in a slower airplane like the Wingeon. MuYe's video exploring them doesn't do it justice.

It's unfair to shift the blame for BeamNG's current reputation to content creators and YT Shorts guys who see it as a crashing game first and foremost. You have to remember that BeamNG got its popularity from being a crashing sim and it started development as one. The shift to all the other types of gameplay was fairly recent and a lot of people just didn't hear the news/still think that the "gamey" elements of the game are quite raw (which they are tbh). BeamNG is still in development, give it some time, let the gameplay elements develop further and get more deep and the game's reputation will change. Right now the game is still mostly about choosing the map, the car, setting up some obstacles and doing whatever you want, which doesn't let the game mechanics that are not just crashing shine.

In all my 15 years of life, BeamNG Drive was the best car simulator I've ever played. I was the happiest person when I could finally play that, I had so much fun on it, racing, testing configurations, or just cruising around the maps. Unfortunately, my parents banned me from playing beamNG because "the game is aimless and all you do is crash the car, press a button and the car appears repaired, so you can crash it again." I didn't even try to argue, I already knew it was a lost battle. I miss that game and my Vivace.

There is a crashing component, but it's an "Oh I screwed up." not a "Haha, fling me at a wall because funny haha.", and the racing is actual racing, just with cars that are sometimes a bit silly, or maybe a flood or something is causing people to drive at 10 10ths.

I disagree with your motion about the "image problem" the game has. Sure, you can do some realistic racing in the game, and that's cool, you can play the game how you want. But it not going to "damage its image" if it never really had that to begin with. It's always going to be about crash physics first and Racing second because that's what it was marketed as. Hell, it's a successor to Rig of Rods, another physics-based crashing game. This is a just a strawman argument and a "old man yells at cloud" situation.
This is like trying to play Assetto Corsa and complaining about the crash physics in the game. The fact that "actual racing games" not having the best crash modules is that they put the racing first and the crashing second. (Also licensing issue, big name companies don't want to see their products destroyed all to hell).

We’re no longer talking about BeamNG’s earliest years. There’s clear developmental direction away from crashing which is why there’s an image problem at stake.

TH-cam shorts in general are always going to be the most viewed. Unfortunately the type of content is lacking to appeal to a great majority of simple minded people.
TLDR BeamNG has a big community knowing what the game is about, along with a big community who don't. I'd say it does equal out a bit even if the shorts seem to be the most saturated content wise.

I've come to be surprised with how big Beam's community is. As for shorts, I believe that's unfortunately the direction TH-cam is going to continue leaning in to try and wash the competition.

@@TalksWithNoise Yeah it is indeed sad.. It's tainting BeamNG's name and simplifying it to something that it isn't. But at the same time it does bring exposure to people about it so it will only grow the community in the end. Shorts are just a necessary evil.

tbh, back in the days crashing was all there was that the game had to offer. So it grew out from that.

I tried 0.1 which was a whole talking point I cut from the video. But essentially found out devs showed hints of interest in making a driving sim. But they knew their targeted audience for the time being. An example being the Bolide release video where they announce they promise to deliver more crashing content which is pretty wholesome imo given the breakthroughs they were making.

I found BeamNG through the ‘carboys’ series from polygon’s youtube channel. Sure, it’s crashing, but it’s a fricking art form. They meet satan and god.

tbh i thought this was a fun crashing game, but I saw that I could do lots of stuff like driving normally, doing police chases, or just messing around with insane jato-equipped cars

thoughtful, funny, well edited and to the point. i hope you're having fun making the vids so that they keep coming!

to be fair, beamng was always marketed as a soft body physics sim first. i started playing around 10 years ago when i was a kid because of channels like insanegaz and whybeare showing off the physics. as i've grown up with the game and it's been updated, they've focused more on driving physics and realism with updates to the tyre physics and PBR materials but i'm not sure they've really changed their marketing to reflect that.
I was blown away with how good it felt to just drive in the game once i got my first wheel, and now crashing seems like a fun bonus rather than the main reason i play

We just want to see a few reviews and sim-style players representing Beam on the front search page. So kind of the opposite.

What got me into this game was how it works with automation. I mainly play automation to build and design cars and as soon as I saw they were working with beamNG to allow you to actually drive the cars I got the game instantly. Before that I had only seen the crashing videos but after seeing how well the game drove (even with the terrible cars I made) I started to get into it more.

I find cars racing around punishing environment and slowly falling apart and seeing how long you can survive most entertaing, Beam is really good for that.
Like how Failrace does the Driven to Destruction races

But then I opened the game and promptly realized it was a hyper-detailed driving sim that just happened to use realistic physics

Good video these BeamNG „crash“ videos are just flooding the video feed when you search BeamNG
I hope someday BeamNG will be seen as more than an crash game. It’s sad because it has become a really good driving simulator also with the simulated damage of gearboxes, driveshafts, suspension, engine etc.

Half of what i do is just try to cause the most cinematic and satisfying crashing, and the other 50% is a mix of rally, reliability tests, seeing how far a car can make it with certain parts removed, and customization.

I subbed. I enjoy watching those videos where they simulate realistic car crashes just to see how it would play out and draw conclusions if it would also happen in real life like how it did in the game.

I am not a driving game player (I play Mario Kart and GTA and nothing else really) but when I upgraded my PC BeamNG was one of the first games I bought for the crashing physics.
I don't really see this as a "problem" as it really helps the game stick out. To me, most racing and driving games are interchangeable and I just don't really buy them, but that feature makes it stand out. I don't think it's as much "people overlook the other stuff it has to offer" and more "the larger majority of gamers don't really care about games that offer that stuff" and BeamNG has made a lot of sales to non-racing fans.

And, that's why I don't focus on crashing videos all of the time. My focus has always been on storytelling instead of crashing. Crashing is just a fun bonus in my videos. I'm here to make videos that have good car chases while telling some fanmade lore. And, I don't rely on AI-generated voices aside from talking vehicles that have AI components in them. So yeah, even I believe that BeamNG's crash content is oversaturated nowadays. It's amazing that my videos barely get as much views as the ones from BeamNG Shorts as I am not a fan of their content. But, content creators are still here to make money one way or another. Guys like BeamNG Boy and SourDisc are excellent channels that are underrated. So yeah, I know good BeamNG content whenever I see it.

what i believe what the best thing beamng drive is for, is endurance racing
as it turns out it is kind of hard to not damage your suspension when going at speeds exceeding 40mph
