    Herod the great is also remembered for attempting to order various executions on the day he died, apparently in order to ensure that proper grief was shown. It seems Herod the great was or was at least seen as extremely irrational and violent, something that would mean that the massacre of the innocents would be in character.

    The bible doesn’t call them “wisemen” but as Magi.
    It’s only through oral telling of the story that it got switched from Magi to Wisemen. Also it doesn’t say how many, people just assumed 3, because they only brought 3 gifts.

      It does matter, specially if true believers watch this.
      Too many believers have a wrong interpretation of the bible, due to oral tellings and because of what they are told in church.
      I’m not a believer, but I think it’s important to use the proper wording from the bible. Already too many wrongful beliefs about what the bible says when it doesn’t.

    • @matthias2756
      @matthias2756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ryan Voll this video isn’t designed to be a true telling of the bible, it’s a genealogical chart. If true believers want to get their info about their own myths they can read their book, not watch TH-cam vids on a semi related topic

      It’s designed to teach people about the genealogy of the people in the bible. So yes, it should be using proper wording. Because it’s teaching about known people and people only mentioned in the bible.
      This channel is designed as educational.

    • @matthias2756
      @matthias2756 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ryan Voll the purpose is the genealogy, actual history. Just because some myths mention real historical characters doesn’t mean when you talk about history you’re making a video on the mythology.

    Great video Sam! 3:45 The notion of separate kingship and high priesthood is not found in Numbers, but you are probably thinking about Korah's dispute over the leadership which is found there, ch. 16. Indeed, the institution of kingship is never mentioned in Numbers. Notions of separate kingship are found in Deuteronomy, in chapters 17-18. Interestingly, the notion of a strict devision probably did not exist in the early monarchy; David performs sacrificial rites (2Sam 6) and his sons served as priests (2Sam 8). Still, unlike in Hasmonean times, this was probably the exception not the rule, as the Levite-Zadokite clan is said to be the primary priestly family.

    It is incorrect to say that the Western or Wailing Wall is the only remaining part of Herod's temple complex. Most if not all of the temple platform wall is Herodian. The significant of the Wailing Wall is later, from a time when Jews were banned from the temple platform and were only allowed access to the southern portion of the western retaining wall which was next to the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem. The Jews of that time took to mourning there consistent with Psalm 137.

    7:35 Many historians is unwilling to consider the historical value of religious texts. The massacre might also have been seen as irrelevant by outside and later historians and supressed by historians living during the reign of the Herod dynasty, since there is a high certainty that Christ is an historical person.

    • @TurtleMarcus
      @TurtleMarcus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      While later traditions say that 14 000 or 64 000 or 144 000 boys where killed in the massacre (all numbers of prophetic significance), scholars today estimate that the massacre would only have between 6 and 20 victims, based on what we know about the population of Bethelem at that time. Ordering the killing of a handful of boys in another town, while gruesome, is still insignificant in the life of Herod, all things considered.

      @@TurtleMarcus That's what I'm thinking also. Considering that Herod had his own wife, Mariamne, executed as well as three of his sons because he was afraid they would usurp him, it's not so unbelievable that he would have got a few babies in Bethlehem killed.

    The account of the Visit of the Magi never indicates how many Magi there were; tradition says three probably because three gifts are mentioned in the biblical story. There could have been as few as two or there could have been many; all the story makes clear is that there were more than one.

    I have a very good idea for your channel: The organization of the Holocaust. This is very confusing as the Nazi Party, German government, SS, RSHA, SD, SiPO, Gestapo where overlapping organizations. Somehow there is an organizational relationship between Hitler, Himmler, Heydrich, Eichmann, Globocnik and Stangl commander of Treblinka, but I have never seen it. Where does the Operation Reinhardt and the Einsatzgruppen diverge?

      I don't do charts about Hitler and his evil cohorts. I believe in the principle of Yimakh shemo (may his name be forgotten). I'm not saying that there shouldn't be Holocaust education. There should. But so many people like to focus on Hitler and Nazis to the point that it's almost glorifying them.

    7:14 huge fan Sam, but everyone knows that there were only "3 wise men," right? The magoi were never numbered in Matthew. This later European detail stems from their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, which Matthew does mention. And it might be good to consider what such a contingent of religious leaders coming to Herod might actually look like. But at that point, we'd have to acknowledge that Persia exists.
