    A great sequel to this video would be the establishment of the Hasmonean Dynasty, which ruled a Kingdom of Judea from c. 140 to 37 BCE. They developed an early form of a constitutional monarchy with a king and the Sanhedrin acting as both legislative and judicial. The Great Sanhedrin was even able to try the king at court. The history of the time period is amazing.

    I am glad to got around to making this. I remember suggesting it years ago. Very well prepared and documented.
    Judah Maccabbee actually fought 8 battles recorded by history. Indeed, in the last one he was defeated. The Seleucid armies he fought were no-longer formed in rectangular phalanx formation, but in square roman fashion. This was something Judah was not prepared to face.

    • @RafaelRabinovich

      @Evelina1995 yes, plus a rebellion against an empire, plus lots of local and international politics mixed in the matter

    • @RafaelRabinovich
      @RafaelRabinovich ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Evelina1995 the "Greeks" refers to the Hellenists and the Hellenizers. The Hellenists were those of Hellenistic culture (the Seleucids in Syria and the Ptolemists in Egypt). Hellenizers refers to the assimilated Jews.
      The Macabean rebellion was against the Seleucid Hellenists and the Hellenizing Jews that sided with them.
      The Hellenists from Egypt were ambivalent, seeing the Maccabees as heroes but diminishing the Divine spirit of their rebellion. Hence, the Apocryphal books of the Maccabees, found in Egypt and written in Greek, portrays the Maccabees as heroes but omits the miracle of the Menorah.

    I’ve read the Jews and Greeks got along really well till that one Seleucid. So many times it just takes one backed with a surprisingly few to ruin a good thing and force peoples to become violently opposed. They got on so well the Old Testament was translated into Greek as that had become many Jews first language and legal documents could be written in Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic. Thank you for such a quick and extremely clear presentation

    There were two instances where I flinched: you credited some percent of his victory as plain luck, but he would've called it G-d.
    Second: one of the last lines of the video, if not the last line, is we're they zealots trying to force their religion on people. I say it's the opposite: they were getting rid of a foreign influence that was being forced on them! Yes, they burned out the foreign influence, but it was being forced upon them, taking their freedom. They were fighters of G-d. Allowing them to be free to live a life of balance with our spiritual and physical selves.

      I'm totally fine with Maccabees fighting the Greeks, but forcing your practices on your own people and annihilating perceived "traitors" among your own is problematic. The other time it happened, during the first Jewish Roman war in 66-73 CE, it didn't end well. The zealot factions were far busier killing other Jews whom they perceived as "collaborators" and "traitors" than fighting the Romans, which added a significant civil war dimension to the conflict.
      As a religious Jew, you should know that after the destruction of the second temple, the rabbis and sages forbade any violence against other Jews regardless of their views, the only exception being if they pose a direct physical threat. This is why Jews do not kill heretics, apostates, dissidents or sectarians. Some rabbis hold that the temple was destroyed because Jews fought and killed other Jews, rather than for other transgressions against the Torah.

    Great video as always, but I found naming Antiochos Epiphanes a ''proto-Nero'' a somewhat gross exaggeration. Or maybe an astonishingly accurate one, if we compare how historical sources depicted them both as evil. The main sources we have on Epiphanes' reign are both hostile to him, the first one being from the Jewish people themselves, the other from Polybios, a friend of Rome. Epiphanes was definitely an extravagant king, much like Nero was as an emperor, but a bad one? He was clearly able to navigate the complex political currents of the time, keeping his alliance with Rome while empowering his kingdom (which was an almost impossible feat to accomplish, Perseus and the Macedonian kingdom being proof of it), and he lead the Seleucids out of the economical/political crisis that had been crippling its affairs since the death of Antiochos the Great ten years before his own reign.

    • @TheRosatus
      @TheRosatus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's actually more impressive. This video is really short and miss lot of details, plus it doesn't include the two great revolts against Rome that came~ 230 and 290 years later. Bar Kokhba revolt against Rome is one of its hardest wars ever, very few of its many wars actually comparable to that. It last 3.5 years , Rome had to declare mandatory conscription for its first time in 100 years, Rome concentrated half of its entire military in Judea in effort to win this war. It lost two legions and almost all other legions suffered heavy causalities. For the only time in history perhaps, when the Roman emperor then, Hadrian, wrote report to the Roman Senate he didn't sign it with "Me and my legions are well" and instead only signed "I'm well". When decades later Roman emperors felt that their war challenges are too big their advisers suggested them to remember with what Hadrian had to deal in Judea. Tuetoberg victory wasn't that great. The Roman legions didn't came for war, the were scattered along 20 km long line and among them many civilians walked- they were ambushed by 80000 Germans led by Arminius a German who was officer in the Roman army and appointed to something like being Rome representative to the German tribes in Germany- he invited the Romans just to Ambush them in territory they really were unfamiliar with. It was impressive but short, last only 3 days. Rome was in shock, but few years later sent its legions to avenge the fallen legions and it was really one sided- in very short time they destroyed most of the tribes that were involved in that. Arminius escaped (just to be killed shortly after by fellow Germans of a different tribe than his) but his wife was taken prisoner. In any case, the most impressive war, military speaking, against Rome- was this of Hannibal, and in my opinion it was perhaps world's most important war. Had Hannibal won, history would look so different. Same can be said about the destruction of the second Jewish temple by Titus- it dramatically changed the path of global history.

    The ultimatum of Eleusis (-168) between Gaius Popilius Laenas and Antiochos IV is one of the most surprising moment in History. Rome forces an Empire to stop the long awaited conquest of it's old nemesis simply by threatening it :
    "At the time when Antiochus approached Ptolemy and meant to occupy Pelusium, Caius Popilius Laenas, the Roman commander, on Antiochus greeting him from a distance and then holding out his hand, handed to the king, as he had it by him, the copy of the senatus-consultum, and told him to read it first, not thinking it proper, as it seems to me, to make the conventional sign of friendship before he knew if the intentions of him who was greeting him were friendly or hostile. But when the king, after reading it, said he would like to communicate with his friends about this intelligence, Popilius acted in a manner which was thought to be offensive and exceedingly arrogant. He was carrying a stick cut from a vine, and with this he drew a circle round Antiochus and told him he must remain inside this circle until he gave his decision about the contents of the letter. The king was astonished at this authoritative proceeding, but, after a few moments' hesitation, said he would do all that the Romans demanded. Upon this Popilius and his suite all grasped him by the hand and greeted him warmly. The letter ordered him to put an end at once to the war with Ptolemy. So, as a fixed number of days were allowed to him, he led his army back to Syria, deeply hurt and complaining indeed, but yielding to circumstances for the present. Popilius after arranging matters in Alexandria and exhorting the two kings there to act in common, ordering them also to send Polyaratus to Rome, sailed for Cyprus, wishing to lose no time in expelling the Syrian troops that were in the island. When they arrived, finding that Ptolemy's generals had been defeated and that the affairs of Cyprus were generally in a topsy-turvy state, they soon made the Syrian army retire from the country, and waited until the troops took ship for Syria. In this way the Romans saved the kingdom of Ptolemy, which had almost been crushed out of existence: Fortune having so directed the matter of Perseus and Macedonia that when the position of Alexandria and the whole of Egypt was almost desperate, all was again set right simply owing to the fact that the fate of Perseus had been decided. For had this not been so, and had not Antiochus been certain of it, he would never, I think, have obeyed the Roman behests."

    The Hellenes and Hebrews have such a rich history. No wonder the current mutual love and respect of modern Israel and Greece.

      I wanna see one about Canaanite history, before the Jews. The Lebanese and Palestinians would take pride in that one.

      @@IslenoGutierrez You must be joking. The Lebanese, sure, I guess they got some Phoenician blood in them. Palestinians however have no relation to Canaanites whatsoever. Arabic is a seperate language from Canaanite altogether. Not to mention that the name "Canaan" is mentioned in ancient Egyptian documents from the bronze age (3300 BC-1200 BC) and the name "Arabs" first appears in 853 BC in documents about the battle of Qarqar.

      @@JonasR001 The Palestinians are not ethnic Arabs, they are the indigenous people of the land that were conquered by Arabs spreading Islam. They were Christians before that (a good amount of Palestinians are still Christians). The Palestinians adopted the Arab identity, they are not actual Arabs from the Arabian peninsula. On DNA tests, they cluster WITH Canaanite DNA samples. Not near, but WITH them. Same as the Lebanese. Jews don’t want to admit that, but peer-reviewed DNA studies don’t lie. Lebanese also claim to be Arabs too, and we know for certain that they are heavily Canaanite ancestry. Lebanese samples on a recent scientific DNA study pegged Lebanese as 93% Canaanite. Lebanese are not Arabs either. Nor are Syrians or Jordanians. They are all native Levantines that were conquered and adopted new identities as Arabs. DNA studies supports this. And we know that the Jews were expelled from Israel, so that leaves the Palestinians to be the descendants of the ancient Canaanites, the only native indigenous people in Israel/Palestine. Well to be fair, the Lebanese could be seen as the indigenous people of Israel/Palestine (Canaan) too along with Palestinians since they are mostly Canaanite DNA.

      @@IslenoGutierrez Here you go again Torres. While Lebanese did largely descend from northern canaanites (aka the phoenicians), the connection between modern Palestinians and ancient canaanites is non existent. A figment of your and PLO's imagination. Also, there is no much information about the canaanites from the time before the Jews. Most of what we know about the southern the canaanites comes from Jewish sources (whether it's the Bible, or modern israeli archaeology). So, you'd have to include the jews in that presentation, too. To your great disappointment. A little bit comes from the Egyptian, so we can include them too. So I think you'd be better off sticking t just the Phoenicians. There is plenty of info outside the jewish sources, but of course the Palestinians have even less connections with them.

    I am half Jewish and was raised predominantly as a Jew. Well done for visually showing the difference between a hanukkiah (the eight branched candelabrum) and an actual menorah (six branches)! Some Jews don't even know the difference! In 2001 my dad talked about the Maccabees being religious zealots that could have given the Taliban a run for their money, and this video put the facts and context around his remark, as well as hinting at why some of their zelotry was (and still is) often swept under the rug. Although you included the oft-repeated part of the story about the nare tamid (eternal lamp) burning for eight days, a rabbi at my college Hillel actually pointed out that this part of the story doesn't show up in the written record until several centuries after the battles with the Selucids when the Jews are being oppressed by new overlords. This part of the story was probably written to placate them. That said, it is the most widely told portion of the Hanukkah story, and according to this same rabbi, the story of the unlikely military victory of the Maccabees is rarely told among Jews outside of the United States of America. American Jews often tell this part of the story because it mimics the story of the American Revolution.
