I just saw Saltburn last night and it also surpassed my enormous expectations. I have decided that my life will be defined as pre- and post-Saltburn. I am so proud of Emerald Fennell for making such a daring and audacious film!!

Curious. Can you go into more detail about why you feel this way regarding this film beyond all others? Just trying to get some others opinions. And it's typically difficult to find anyone going into any actual detail about what they exactly liked about the film and what it did well.

@@lockekappa500 Yes for sure. I don't want to go into too much detail to avoid spoilers. I really love stories about the upper class re their grandiose lifestyles but also how out of touch they can be with society. I also love stories about people from a lower class trying to weasel their way in, so this story fits perfectly. The element of desire and obsession I feel is explored in a very bold and daring manner which I have seen few times in film. I can really see where some of Fennell's references are from but I feel she puts a new spin on them. I love the cinematography especially in how it captures the lush nature of Saltburn but also the very dark elements of the story - there is one scene in particular where you can see the inspiration from Sven Nykvist's work in Cries and Whispers. Furthermore, I finished high school in '05 so I can really appreciate the 00s references. I also love the dry and daring British humour in the film. The characters and their attitudes also help create this gaudy atmosphere, and they are acted so brilliantly by all the cast, but I especially love Rosamund Pike's dry line delivery and portrayal of the obliviousness of her character. Carey Mulligan as Poor Dear Pamela is quite possibly my favourite character of the year in a film in her brief appearance. There are many other reasons but I hope that suffices!

Fun Fact : Saltburn is Rosamund Pike and Carey Mulligan's third collaboration after Pride & Prejudice and An Education. That alone is enough for me to be interested, it's always exciting to see the Bennet sisters reunite in a new project. I'm now seeing Mulligan being Fennell's muse just like what Kirsten Dunst is to Sofia Coppola which is awesome, hoping to see more of Fennell, Mulligan and maybe Pike collab more in the future

Also the carelessness with which fennel approaches her subject matter and themes is just appalling. Really just shows a disdain for black people, poor people, people with eating disorders. Promising Young Woman was one of my favourite movie of 2020 and earned Emerald Fennell a well deserved screenplay Oscar win so i'm definitely excited to see what's her next movie and i think this looks pretty fascinating. I mean yeah i get that it's getting a divisive reaction but really so was Fennell's first movie so i wasn't surprised that this movie might work for some and might not work for the others (remember that Variety criticized the casting of Carey Mulligan in PYM simply because she wasn't hot enough for the role which is absolutely ridiculous) and that's totally okay. It's pretty impressive tho that the filmmaker behind both of those movies is the same person who played Camilla Bowles in The Crown season 3 and 4

This was fun, sometimes hilarious, but not all that surprising or thought provoking for me. I also didn’t think it was all that wild tbh, and there was quite a lot of ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ in it (a movie I genuinely think is a masterpiece). I also did not need the last 15 minutes or so - I feel like it goes to great lengths to show and explain things it did not need to.
All of that said, I did still like ‘Saltburn’, but can’t quite say that I love it. Linus Sandgren’s cinematography is beautiful (even better than what he did on ‘Babylon’ imo), and the performances are very good (Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi are both very strong, especially Keoghan, and Rosamund Pike steals every scene she’s in, along with Carey Mulligan). There’s a lot to really like here, I just don’t think Emerald Fennell is getting at anything that hasn’t been explored more thoroughly elsewhere.
Still, while she might not be saying anything new or profound, at least she’s made something fun and stylish.
    I would give this a 7.5/10.

I recently saw it and… eh, I didn’t really get it. The first two acts were brilliant and then the third act just dropped so much and I was like… what? There were so many scenes where I was like, uh, what was the point of that? It felt like it was trying to hard to be The Talented Mr. Ripley, Eyes Wide Shut, Rebecca and The Great Gatsby all at the same time and it didn’t really work for me. The final reveals especially felt like they were trying too hard to be: “He wasn’t really typing DUN DUN DUN” but it just didn’t land. It basically just confirmed what I already knew. And so much of it felt like: “Here I’m going to be shocking”, “why?”, “I don’t know, shocking”.

why is everyone so perplexed he played everyone including the Audience. Putting a whole in the tire shows he played everyone from the beginning I found his mark and planned everything manipulated everyone. Did he find Felix hot yes but internal hemophobia made him hate Felix for it. The sister garden scene , the bath tub scene , and the grave yard scene give us a glimpse in to his sycosis. At the end his plan was successful and the family members were off enough for us not to fall in love with anyone but Felix who was a sweet heart that is why he was the first to die without the leave headed one the rest were easy pick-ins. Personally I really enjoyed the movie bit slow at times but need to build the characters. That ending scene was awesome though who wouldn't do that.

Some comments about Saltburn: Oliver "won" in the end but is he happy? Snorting cocaine and dancing around this huge mansion on his own, gloating in his own ability to obtain Saltburn for himself and holding the dead rich family as trophies.
The psychology of Oliver does not ring true (thankfully). The obsessiveness and "love/hate" dynamic of Oliver is more true of the borderline personality and the borderline personality is usually too disorganised to pull off a coup like this.
Oliver's psychology is more that of the dark triad, in which case he would not be that interested in sex and love other than to use them as tools to manipulate others. The grave and bath scenes do not make sense in this respect.
So then we have to wonder as to the intention of the film maker, if the intention isn't to warn us of such personalities in a real way. Perhaps the film is superficial in that it is a thriller - simple entertainment. There is something superficial about the family's reactions to the deaths too, in that they have some comedy to them. The film is clever in the way it references other texts, but again this is a postmodern superficiality.
I think she articulates an aristocratic fear that the middle or working classes will "steal" their wealth. Although the middle class fellow "wins" we are by no means supposed to enjoy his victory. On the whole no one comes out of this story very well.

this movie reminds me of the series "White Lotus" with the funny death scenes and interplay.. although this one, Saltburn, was a bit darker. Near the end, she implies that Olver killed Sir James by saying to Oliver, "wondering why it took you so long" after she acknowledged Sir James had died recently and Oliver mentioned having seen the notice in the newspaper. Certainly, this movie is surreal.. this is probably more about what someone might wish or imagine on occasion when they are angry with someone, but never not do something like that, otherwise, this is a movie about a sociopathic killer. the movie also reminds me of another recent movie Midsommar (2019)

The ending sort of…felt like a blunt object hitting you over the head after a subtle knife has been cutting you for the past few hours. Like, it was framed like a twist ending but honestly shouldn’t surprise anyone who, ya know, watched the movie.
That said, I loved EVERYTHING except the part where they summarize the movie like I didn’t just watch it and remove all subtlety. So I’ll just watch it all again and roll my eyes at that part. Dark and frothy at the same time is almost exactly my weird little niche.

  • @tonyg76

Spoilers ahead. Promising Young Woman was much better than Saltburn. While both controversial, at least Carey Mulligans' character did her revenge tour without hurting anyone or killing anyone. Also, the guy who killed her did not get away with it at the end. In Saltburn, Barry Keoghans' character was just a mentally ill (in a violent, manipulative, destructive way) and he got away with killing at least three family members. I am hoping Fennells' third movie is closer to Promising Young Woman than Saltburn.

I enjoyed the film. I found the first half particularly good. I felt the ending was almost unnecessary and made the film look a bit cliched - and a bit close to The Talented Mr Ripley. I thought that the film was going to end when Venetia calls him out saying that some people leave, some stay - and all that stuff about moths. If the film finished here it would have actually been a better film. The point of the film became very clear and I think a lot of people could relate to it. It really would have left the audience thinking and reflecting. Instead a long coda was glued on that actually obscured and somewhat trivialised the core message.

This movie is up there now in my top two least favorite movies I have ever seen, the other being Requiem for a Dream. I really liked Promising Young Woman, but Saltburn did not do it for me at all other than the scenes with Rosamund Pike and the great Richard E. Grant. The rest of it - blah - and I think one of the main reasons is that I just don't see Keoghan as the star of any movie (at least not one I want to watch). But everything else as well, the story, the supporting cast other than those I mentioned. I love Carey Mulligan too, but that was just a short throwaway part because she knows the director. So yes, this is my least favorite movie of the year, surpassing Barbie (which while amazingly uninteresting was at least pleasant to watch).

This film is a chaotic mess, despite strong acting. The narrative lacks coherence, leaving viewers with no clear understanding of the main character's motives. The concluding leap 16 years ahead, revealing the protagonist as a false narrator, as expected, but it's presented in a way that makes absolutely no sense. There's a contradiction in portraying a lack of love for Felix, while earlier scenes depict an intimate connection, even including unsettling moments (slurping up Felix’s sperm filled bath water). The film's lack of sense doesn't seem intentional; it's more a result of poor construction rather than an attempt to perplex the audience by the director or writer.

I had HIGH HOPES for this film, and I'm watching reviews on it right now because I just went to see it. To which I have to say to all these reviewers that praise it's craziness, have you never seen anything by Lars Von Trier? There were THREE scenes in this movie that might "might" be considered shocking to someone who has never ever seen a movie in their life. I watch everything, and i mean everything, and I am not proud of that (A Serbian Film). I went to this wanting to be taken to deep dark places I was not prepared to go to. And damn it felt like The Sound Of Music. The Favourite was more provocative than this. Hell, Cruel Intentions had more implications than this. Carey Mulligan was a cartoon in this. As far as the reviewer talking about the highly charged sexual scenes in this movie, and how Fennell did not hold back anything in this movie, did we watch the same movie or did I watch an edited for TV version? WTF did you see? A kid drinking the bath water after a guy masturbated in it. A kid kissing with period blood. A kid humping the dirt of a cemetary plot. Anything by Lynch, Von Trier, Bertolucci, even Kubrick is highly more sexualized. Todd Solondz's 1998 film Happiness will blow this movie out of the water in what it says about humanity's deep dark areas.

I just watched the film and it's an empty film with shock value to make up for it's flaws. It didn't make sense how he could have this kind of influence on a family and stay 6 months! The film leads you into the a 'Get Out' type of scenario but does the opposite. It is also heavily influenced by 'Climax' by Gasper Noé. Many shots, lighting and camera work are direct copies. Climax is far far superior and the ride it takes you on is intense and truly heart pumping, totally realistic.
The outrageous scenes in Saltburn were done for shock value, crossed lines and totally unrealistic and ridiculous. The film was amateurish in its film making too. I give it a solid 5 out of 10.
