I can't believe it took me so long to find this song, it's so great that the first time I heard it I had to listen to it about 5 more times. These type of songs deserve many replays, I was lucky enough to see them live when waylon was still with them but I didn't know very many of their songs. Glad I could find and fully appreciate this one
Fun story about this song: My cousin used to be forced to go to church by my step-aunt and, after he turned thirteen, she started making him sing in the choir. During this time, I was still a good little church boy and was admittedly very naive about the world outside of the Southern Baptist mindset. As the years passed, it became pretty obvious that he despised singing in the choir despite his obvious talent and turned down several opportunities to sing the Sunday morning special (a solo performance that is common in churches where there are a few talented people.) One day, I was surprised find out my cousin actually volunteered to sing a solo for the church special one random Sunday and this left me very confused, even leading me to think that he'd come around and was becoming like me. The next Sunday morning, I sat and watched him with his acoustic guitar as he sang a very mournful song that he said was about redemption from our sins and yeah, you guessed it, it was a just barely altered acoustic version of this song. Dude trolled the entire church. I didn't even realize what had happened until years later when I found this original version of the song on a hard drive that a military buddy had loaned me. I think some of the guys in my tent legitimately thought I had snapped, since I just randomly started laughing out loud for what most of us thought was no reason at all. Jessie, I miss you man.
