Awesome instructions for deadlift, can i deadlift 3 times a wk or is that to much? I love deadlift only thing i dont do from your instruction is wear belt. 👊💪✌
Why is it that different people describe pulling the slack of the bar differently?? What I have heard from brenden tietz is actually on point but what you are showing when it comes to pulling the slack according to him is wrong all ure doing is staying tight but not pulling the slack at all
You all prolly dont give a shit but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the account password. I would love any help you can give me
@Alec Anson Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I think some of the best advice I was ever told & practiced was just where do you feel tension before you do the lift. Getting in the set position at the bottom, taking slack out of the bar & load those hammies up. If you’re feeling it in your back you’re not in the right starting position. Also I think it goes under the radar but Brian Alsruhe preaches it... get a strong brace.
Man I love Seeing the Third St Athletics gear! I appreciate how much you guys share the acknowledgement and support each others businesses. There's always room at the table for more people to be successful in fitness!
What really helped me was fixing my stance, I was standing way too narrow and felt it in my lower back, but after adjusting my stance width I stopped getting pains in my lower back.
I think head position matters also. As in where your eyes are looking. I found that keeping a straight neckline all the way down your vertebrae is best for me than looking up.
Great vid Coach! A cue that worked really well for me to pull the slack out of the bar is when I pull myself into position I think about doing a leg curl to do that. Hope that can help anyone. Thanks Joe
I have been subscribed to your channel for a while now and I have to say bro you are by far the best I have seen, great content, very educational and practical I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Actually started deadlifting after watching one of your videos some years back. Keep up the good work 💪💪💪 God bless
Thank you for your content...the “long arms” cue helped me a bunch, I was shrugging at the top and messing up my lockout. Now fixed and reps look good. Appreciate your efforts, great information.
AWESOME queue about the Triceps flex. Never heard that one before, I'll be sure to implement. What about lowering the weight back down? 1. Let gravity take it's from there, (save back.) Or 2. Lower slowly and controlled, (risk hamstring tear.) Or 3. Somewhere in between?
thanks for checking out the video! I just guide the weight down more on the side of letting gravity do it's thing. Sometimes with hypertrophy I'll control the eccentric more.

When you pull now do you personally use double overhand with hook grip, or a mixed grip? And why would you prefer one over the other? Great stuff Joey!
For shoes I love my Otomix. Super flat and wide enough for my feet. My belt is an SBD. Its a lot nicer than my Pioneer but is almost 2x the price. When getting a belt 13mm is the way to go.
Hey, Joey, how YOU doin'? (that was a Friends reference for you rascals). Man, I tried using the touch 'n go technique for the deadlift and I feel like I can mantain my breathing and bracing so much better, do you think there's any problem if I just use touch 'n go from now on? And this might be a stupid question, but ... should I be using a hook grip on trap bar deadlifts too? Thank you so much, your videos are awsome.
Great video! Do you happen to have a video you've made before or recommendations for why I can't deadlift without crippling lower back soreness for the next 3 or 4 days? Whether it's sumo or conv, my lower back is fried. Not necessarily a shooting pain or anything, just extremely sore, tight and hard to move. Thank you!
Lower back soreness after deadlifting usually means there's a technique issue. I would read up on breathing and bracing and review your set up. Recording your sets will be your best friend. Your lower back probably moves first to start the lift but your want your quads and hips initiating the lift. There's a million different aspects of the lift you could adjust like focusing on lat tightness, not dropping your hips as far, thinking about wedging your hips underneath the bar... So just find a decent deadlift setup video (I'm sure Joey has some, Chris duffin and Brian alsruhe are great as well) and try to adjust one thing at a time while recording your sets until you find what feels the best.
@@seanmurphy6136 I think I am but to be honest it's very hard to tell. And I think that after a couple reps or even mid way through the rep, I lose the ability to hold it. Do you think weak abs can play a role? If I'm being real, I half ass my ab training lol so I should probably take that more serious.
@@tylerweibel8049 I mentioned to Sean above that maybe I lack sufficient core strength to brace long enough or hard enough? I'll record more sets and get more opinions. I do have one recording I showed someone and was told my form was pretty decent. But then again you usually try your best when you know you're being watched lol. Thanks for the info though I really appreciate it. Here's a conventional video if you'd like to see my form. I know I'm not locking out all the way, I've since corrected that. I prefer sumo though so I'll get more videos of that if you're interested, don't want to just bombard someone for free technique advice though lol drive.google.com/file/d/1KafNJD7gFGTcgKkOCUWTejeQhTRN6cVj/view?usp=sharing
@@brandonfrazier5806 strengthening your abs can help almost any lift. I know for me personally anytime before I squat or deadlift I always do 4x25 hanging leg / hanging knee raises just to work my abs and warm them up before my heavy compounds so try that and you can also rest for 5 seconds between each rep and reset and get a big breathe during those few seconds again and see if that works and really try to push your stomach out and down while performing the lift
Your butt seems to rise on the heavy deadlifts, i.e. 2:08. Is it an advanced technique to grind out a PR? Also I noticed Novikov does several test pulls before a lift, where he builds up to a max. Care to speak to that?
As far as I am aware, this means that the starting position is incorrect. He should be getting set with his hips higher. It is an inefficiency that if anything may technically hinder your true PR. You're the only one I've seen in a quick scan of the comments that noticed this. Your hips should not shoot up first as the pull is initiated however with heavy loads and PR's sometimes form can break down a bit.
Great video, Joey! Question about mixed grip. I've been deadlifting for 11 months now and the mixed grip is what feels the best for me. I hit my PR of 450x1 not too long ago. Was wondering at what weight should I start being really wary about bicep tears? Or does the weight not matter and it's more of a discussion of form...
I wouldn't worry about it... if you are training hard and getting stronger so do your tendons and ligaments. Also injury can just be random sometimes so just focus on good high quality training. if something doesn't feel right, observe it and make smart decisions.
almost everyone says not to jerk the bar and I do not personally, but I remember Eddie Hall saying that he would jerk the bar as hard as he could to create some momentum for his pull. not sure if that uniquely works for his body or something that could be more applicable to everyone.
@@ncdozer3103 yeah im not chasing insane records or anything so i think it's safer to pull the slack out but it does seem like there is a higher ceiling for jerking the bar
Could you do a series thats about training with Injuries? I think at some point, even recreational lifters, will want to get in good work while injured.
