- Terming it as the darkest period of his life, Karan Johar opened up on his two-year-long battle with clinical depression. He said he was "directionless", "aimless" and "always on the edge". "I needed medication... first it was much stronger, then we slowly weaned it off and it's just 3 months ago that I actually stopped it all," he said.

Most of India is still in the dark ages when it comes to mental health. People still equate "depression" with "sadness" and "stress." I personally am not a fan of Karan Johar or any of these Bollywood "celebrities," but I would never dismiss or belittle his / their experiences and stories of their mental health. These conversations are important, but are unfortunately driven underground because of the ignorance and stigma.
as someone who's been suffering from depression for over 10 years, this is exactly how I feel. You just described me perfectly. I need medication but coming from a typical asian family, my parents don't believe there's such thing as depression exist. Helpless hopeless living like a dead

The comments here accurately echos what Karan is saying on how people don't know about depression. I don't like Karan's movies and his Koffee with Karan is shit but he is brave to talk about this matter. Same like other disease, depression can be fatal, it can take lives and disturb lives of the families and friends. Awareness and intervention is required in depression and anxiety.
It gives a ray of hope to those suffering through depression

Only people who had such an experience can tell you how painful it is. I had seen that one in my family. Coming out and talking will get rid of taboo attached to depression. All is well, by God's grace now

We all live a life , a portrayal for others . Focusing on career too much . Simple just live a life of normality , with a spouse , family , loved ones .... because v r toooo much focussing on career , FAME . V all leave aside the PURPOSE IF LIFE . I’m also a victim of severe depression . I’m a doctor can u imagine. The sad part is many don’t understand what depression is . They think we r jobless to talk abt our feelings . Another sad part is India has higher incidence of mental ailments. We Indians r so busy running for pointless things .

very true...sid. depression is worse than any critical sickness. don view depression s something funny or relate it to psychopathic. its not. i went thru it myself. d jrrny of depression was very much d same s what karan johar went thru. just imagine on d mrng of eid mubarak i just lockrd myself up in my bathroom not wanting to come in contact with anybody. i hd palpatations....sudden brakdown of uncontrollable tears....reminisces of d past....thinking of d future....so much of sadness. not wanting to go home. just felt like wandering. imreally felt karans anxieties during his darkest period in life. depression is an ugly unnoticeable apparition that can overpower anybody. and its victim is thrown into a dark abyss. i was in d dark abyss...but i just managed to get a firm control of it. to my dear frnds who r going thru this devillish period...pls talk to a medical person. don b ashamed bcoz this is not a crime. and hv...always keep amstrong faith. and say i can overcome this devil....

Karan is just here to gain sympathy of the audiences so people might take pity on him and watch his Fawad starer Ae dil hai mushkil. I am not a fan of Karan Johar or Koffee with Karan, but I respect him for having this conversation. We need more such conversations. We need to listen to and empathize with people who are dealing with their mental health. There is inordinate ignorance around this subject in India. Maybe this video is a good initial step in the right direction.

Therapy works much better than medicines but its costly...i too wanted to have therapy each session would charge 2000 or 3. For every session and there would be almost nearly 15 sessions...couldnt afford it...totally out of my reach

I'm a big fan of karan movies And koffee with karan. I'm big fan of saas bahu serials.
I Love Zee horrors , old serials like alif laila.
The reason being I have a serious life, where I have super serious discussions all the time about world issues.
So like my father says when i watch TV I want to be entertained . I don't mind moral stuff too.But I Love the gossip in koffee with karan because there is funny banter but also in the funny banter they speak about real things.
In his movies I get a fairy tale feeling. You see real life serious stuff all the time.
Movies are escape for me.
But One More thing is while I truly acknowledge mental issues, because I've suffered myself.
But having Said that its totally unfair when ppl blame others around us for our depression .Or when we as a society blame near Or dear ones of ppl struggling with depression.
Because sometimes its Not easy to live with those ppl who struggle mentally And it hurts our family when outsiders blame them.
Sometimes there is nothing anyone can do for you And they get tired too. I Saw how I was draining out my mom.
So please be kind the the Person battling mental illness but also don't blame others around them for problems which sometimes as expressed ppl we can create.
Kahan Johar is in a way racist. Focus on Punjabiyat in Yash Chopra's film were more part of the film. KJo makes films with Punjab as central theme - film, after film. And let's get this straight : Pak actors are imported not because of their talent, but because they come from that semi-Mediterranean Punjabi-Pathan-Rajput ethnic block - something which is closed door for Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, and definitely NE Indians.
