Live at the Grainstore is the still the greatest live album of all time of any genre ! The only thing better was seeing Virgil play with the band at the Grainstore each week way back in the day!!
Back in 1996 or early 1997, I saw Virgil do a clinic at a small drum shop in NJ. No one was really aware of who he was. When he was done, everyone in attendance were both excited and looked like they had been hit by a truck. It was truly an incredible sight. He next appeared at the Modern Drummer festival, and everyone knew who he was after that. Great video!
Same reaction the rest of the crowd and I had at the modern drummer festival in 97. I remember sitting next to John Tempesta and seeing him chuckle and shake his head 😂.
It's nice to see Virgil with his own band again, master players, great compositions, with changes as imagined within the music. Virgil is one of my favorites; as a player myself, the music is tight and beautiful.
The greatest technical drummer that has ever lived...I like his phrasing and style too. He is a musical genius...I wish he were more well know in the mainstream but my gosh his level is unreal!
@@krenwregget7667 Perfectly stated. When Virgil 'lost' the Dream Theater audition in 2010, and his next major gig was literally with Holdsworth, I could only smile and think, "He really did win in the end..."
@@JazzzRockFuzion that whole DT "audition" was a promotional thing. They'd already picked Mangini but thought it would be cool (and it was) to see a bunch of other top guys "audition" for the band. Virgil is so far beyond DT and I'm not sure he'd be the best fit as they don't need a drummer who can play two of their songs at the same time.
It's amazing to see you play with that grip. I think you have the strongest traditional grip, and of course you've been developed it by.... i don't know, should i said 55 years, or maybe more? And also, i think the Virgil Donati's traditional grip has it own signature, so change it to the match grip, it will be a big lost. (i'm just a little overreacting jajajaja, because i love to see you playing like that) A big hug from Argentina !! You are awesome !
Virgil and his band have set the bar to a level that will take years to be realized. Saw them last two tours, hoping they show up nearby this time around!
I first heard Virgil on Derek Sherinian's 1999 "Planet X" album (the precursor to the band, proper). As a developing 16 year-old player who's idea of 'cutting-edge prog drumming' was Mike Portnoy, it was Earth-shattering...I'd never heard such a combination of finesse, chops, dynamic control, creativity and groove. 25 years on, I'm now 40 and a professional musician...Virgil Donati is still my hero - the pinnacle of the craft, as far as I'm concerned.

Probably the most slept on drummer ever. Even *Mike Portnoy* thinks he's the best technical drummer around and said he physically can't replicate what Virgil does
Traditional grip was created by marching drummers who had attached their drum on their dominant leg. Switching to matched, the non matched hand tends to have an inward twist. Takes a while to unlearn the movement. Matched, obviously is more balanced, depending on what hand you use it opens up the set a bit more.
@papapoodo6685 started out playing traditional right handed and kick. I naturally kicked a ball left footed so switched to playing left handed which meant I also learned traditional played left handed. The hardest part was relearning hi hats with the right foot, still a work in progress though glad I could give a teaching moment junior.
This line up came to #laredotx …. #laredo #texas … LAREDOTX 😅… my crazy non famous city!?… 😂 I met these guys and took pics… star struck!! Must have been 2019. I have footage on my facebook….
They came to Dayton, Ohio too, if you can believe that. Only maybe 25-30 people there but it was an amazing show. Had never seen Andre or Junior before. No keyboards on that date. Stellar players.
He’s not. He said in an interview with Mike Dolbear that he would play matched if he were to start over, but at this stage in the game he’s too invested in trad grip to change now.
Dear Drum Channel, I will very much appreciate if you provide the information and specs on Virgil's MacBook, external SSD, microphones et cetera. This information on his gear is very important as it usually stays in the background behind chops and such. I feel I speak on behalf of the drumming community. Sound, daw programs etc. Is very important. Thank you.

Aside from the obviously ridiculous skill on display, I always appreciate Virgil’s drum tone. It’s like what I imagine in my mind that I want drums to sound like lol.
Without any doubt, Virgil is one of a kind. Very few drummers reached that level of mastery of odd times, speed around the drum set, complex linear rhythms/patterns… but somehow the music he plays is quite boring.. always the same, and always very difficult to feel/understand. It would be nice if has a more “music” oriented band not so mathematical…
Give it up for Virgil and his AMAZING band in the comments! 👇💓
❤
Andre Niere, and Junior Braguinha two brasilian top player music.

The greatest, surrounding himself with top tier musicians but also humble and great people. What a treat this clip is.
Thank you !
What a superstar band, that I had the chance to see live in 2019. Those guys are monsters!

he's the Allan Holdsworth of drums.

I've been watching Virgil for over 30yrs. He is an amazing musician!!!!
It's true: a song is never written. Slowing down this gem breathed new life into an already fine tune. Not better, just different--and fabulous.
It's nice to see and hear Virgil diversify himself it's a refreshing change 👌
Finally they're back :)
Drum Channel mixing is always top notch!!!

Amazing! So great!:)
I’ve been searching for the One since the 90’s when I first listened to VD
VIRGIL IS A BEAST OF A DRUMMER...ONE ONE THE BEST ON THE PLANET..😊
Virgil Donati a drumming Icon ✨🏆🤩🥁⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Superb drumming, strong music .. from France .
Hopefully in the future they'll be a live release of this music, 👍🙏👍🙏☕🍻🍻 great fusion
This is gonna be a musical thunderstorm like Vergil says! ♨️👏♨️
The funny thing is that he said in an interview with Mike Dolbear that if he were to start over he would play matched grip.
Wow. Great music!!!
yes sir!!! cool video ✌️😃👍

Brasileiros nos representando muito bem pelo mundo! Que orgulho!
So nice to see Nieri and Braguinha playinh with Virgil again. Awesome line-up.
It sounds like a two or three bar pattern with a sixteenth note shuffle on top. The first bit maybe 16/13.
Genios y autenticos 😊músicos!
My peon brain can't understand this music, but I appreciate the ridiculous musicianship!
Same. The guy plays on a completely different frequency than I do but I enjoy watching him perform.
You don't need to understand something to enjoy it - ultimately, is there anything to understand? If you enjoy it, that's what counts.
Saw Virgil do a clinic in my home town.He has a mind bending technique, quite unique.A real joy to watch.
Thank you.

Dear Drum channel, Kindly share the other sonic "weapons" of Virgil, and what model is his MacBook, SE Mic specs and all of that. Thank you!
It's in the full documentary! 😉 Watch all of that on ➡ drumchannel.com
noizzzee🙌
I hope they come to Florida, and play some Allan Holdsworth music.

real amazin band. ephemeral...but still crazy good

His sound was better when he was with Pearl drums!!
D.W. are way overrated!!!!!
Anyone know what snare is he playing?
2 brasileiros pqp
any one notice i think there using a light click track in there rehearsal
There is! For your reference 😉
Really catchy songs! I’m awake at 3 am after listening this at 8 pm because so catchy! Yeah nah. Torch all fusion.
its actually if there were nothing!!
He sounds like Dave Weckl. Or Dave Weckl sounds like Virgil Donati
Still having to use bass drums as toms because drum companies ain't listening
Is that the same guitarist who can fret with his nose?
Brazillians could bring virgil back to brazil
Do they use a click track live? This is highly polymetric stuff. I would shit in pants before attempting this in front of people.

era mais fácil o Donati aprender português kkkkk
Горе от ума. Наворотили конечно.

Ok
But the songs??
DW forces people to go to "Tha Nard"! Yuck . One more reason to not play them!
It's technically impressive, but who tf is gonna listen to this?
Switch to match grip now before you damage your hands further.
