That is because of the fidelity rewards. Some countries have it so you collect points from money purchases, and then you trade said points for free food. Hence this screen being built in; just so happens that the code logic behind it is probably a switch or if then where the criteria is subtotal = 0$
IIRC you can also order condiment packets for free on it as well, and also the possibility of a free item promotion, so that is probably why the developers made that screen.

Since they burgers are pattyless, its -10 cents. So the machine think they owe you thos 10 cents and if you order 10 pattyless burgers -10X10=100 so its $1 and that $1 goes to the 11th burger.

Maccas is our nickname/slang for it. But its so widely used that mcdonalds actually call themselves officially maccas, on the sign, advertising etc.
