Hawaii Tsunami - From my backyard - Best Shot Yet! - Kailua, Oahu

- Awesome video of the Hawaii tsunami paying us a visit in our normally calm backyard canal. Pay close attention, you can see the wave "barrel" on the left hand side, near the concrete drain. In over 20+ years of living here, I have NEVER seen anything like this.
To the average person this probably looks unimpressive, but the video doesn't do the wave justice. You had to be there in person to appreciate its epicness.
Being a surfer, I wanted to jump in and ride it, but I didn't want to end up in the tall grass. In retrospect, I should've done it. I probably won't experience that again for a long time, if ever again.
All in all, good experience, well worth staying up for 24+ hours and experiencing 4+ surges of waves.
The most epic wave was the first one, as seen in this video here: • Hawaii Tsunami - 3/11/11 , however, its pretty dark (filmed at 4am). The last wave in that video is quite visible. Again the video doesn't do it justice. I saw a full on wave come down the canal, and actually was a tad bit scared for a second. Then I manned up.

Just wow! To stand in your yard and see an actual tsunami pass within feet of you is something few will ever experience. Thank you for sharing.

Seems rather strange congratulating someone for having touched a wave that was just responsible for wiping out entire communities and taking the lives of around 20,000 souls, but hey, you do you, lol
@@KumaBean How can a natural disaster be responsible ? If anybody is responsible it's the ones who made the false warnings about a max 6m and then max 10m wave when in reality it was up to 45m. And building so close to a already dangerous coast is another thing. Also wavebreakers were just crushed by the tsunami, Walls weren't high enough or destroyed, warning systems didn't work in many places due to the power failures. But who are we to judge ...

Hey, that's a scary enough wave for me. First, you don't expect any movement like that from a canal. Second, that wave traveled THOUSANDS of miles across the ocean to get there, and it arrived overnight. It takes about 10-12 hours to fly across the Pacific, so imagine the speed of that water. That canal wave looks like a mean high tide or angry river already, the kind that pulls you out to the deep if you're not careful.
Lastly, big surges in narrow waterways are freaky. Because they're so contained, the energy of the wave builds back on itself, and makes the water level rise high and fast. If that canal was any narrower, or if it was a passageway through the city - easy massive, uncontrolled flood in 10 seconds or less.

wow, this is a pretty good video actually.. I live on the River Severn in the UK and we have this sort of thing happen naturally in Spring and Autumn (it's called a Bore) and some times the wave can be 4 or 5 meters high. It's one of the biggest bores in the world and is caused by a tidal surge during the season change. There are only a handful of rivers that do it
Sounds like my old backyard near the Cook Inlet of Alaska. I never get tired of watching those waves rolling in and listening to it, especially when it's full of ice....incredible!

I guess people don't understand the amount of force in a tsunami. I mean that water was only 2 maybe 3 ft deep and if you were in it, the comparison would be white water rafting!

Tidal Wave vs. Tsunami. A tsunami and a tidal wave are two different and unrelated phenomena. Tidal waves are waves created by the gravitational forces of the sun or moon, and cause changes in the level of water bodies. Tsunami is also a series of water waves, but are caused because of the displacement of large bodies of water, but due to seismic disturbances.

It was a tsunami though. This was uploaded on the same day as the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. Hawaii is relatively close to Japan, so of course they’re going to experience the same effects of what’s happening there

Thanks for the video. I live 3 houses from Kailua Bay, evacuated & was in Kaneohe on a hilltop sleeping at friends' when these were taken. It was so neat to see the highly unusual sight of the barrel going down the canal. In 38 years living in Hawaii I have also NEVER seen anything like it! I heard that the reef was exposed around 5 am. Thank God it didn't some up any farther. We were truly spared. Poor people of Japan.

Despite the small size of the wave, it must have been very powerful. Now just imagine a wave 100 times the size and traveling at commercial airliner speeds.
This reminds me of the tidal bores we get on some of the rivers, particularly, the River Severn, here in the UK...

People calling this a tidal bore obviously don't live in Hawaii, our canals never get waves. They are consistently calm and never see this kind of action. If you don't live in Hawaii, please don't speak as if you know what is going on here. It's very disrespectful. Much mahalos :)

In a confined space like this, this little remnant tsunami is quite easily visible. I'm glad you shot this.
People are writing annoyed comments here, but this small wave occurred hours after the dangerous, larger first waves. it is not a threat, and yes, it could've been ridden with no danger.
Lots of uninformed scepticism here based solely on the amplitude. That's a dangerous mistake to make to dismiss a tsunami because its height doesn't impress you personally. Tsunamis can reach distances spanning oceanic basins, as this one did, and come ashore as a rapidly rising tide, a breaking series of waves (only with no back end), or even, as in this canal, a bore or surge. So many factors are involved in how the tsunami manifests itself, including generating mechanism (subduction quake, slump or slide, volcanic activity), bathymetry, or shape of the shoreline.

What a beautiful place to live - it looks like paradise. I guess the speed and force of any tsunami is hard to gauge, just looking at it. The power behind that small wave just blows my mind. I have seen some of the study's being done wondering why these waves destroy the homes etc inland . I think they said it gets funneled down streets in between buildings which gives it more power. Thanks for video.
You have to remember that 1 cubic meter of water weighs 1 ton. Also a tsunami has a very long wave length. If the front of the wave hits you, the back of it is about 100 kilometers from you.

Looks like a tidal bore, but that's something that would occur on a regular basis. Good job on catching a bit of history.

That was interesting. Imagine the forces that caused that wave to travel from 2,500 miles away, then it headed East and eventually hit Northern California and Santa Cruz, CA.

Aloha Bruh! Grew up in Aiea myself and heard lots of story bout big island tsunami. So was always kinda scared, but fascinated at same time. Even tho, this one is small compared to others. In the UK we call it a Bore when the tides and flowing river collide. Look up " THE SEVERN BORE" on the river severn where they hold competitions to surf the bore. I think the record is 42 miles.

Very interesting video. Wildly intriguing to know that it traveled that distance to still be able to do that (and, I know tsunami's are known to increase in strength when entering a river mound from sea or any narrowing of water it encounters, and can become higher when the water becomes more shallow, but still, this was in every way fascinating to watch).

I was actually in kailua-kona when that same tsunami hit from Japan. Pretty dramatic as well. Not nearly as bad as Japan coast but still very impressive. The sand beach in front of the King kamehameha hotel all ended in inside and behind the hotel. Fish were swimming in the hotel and the back parking lot over 100 yards away from the coastline. There was no sand on the beach....it was all inside the hotel. They had to ship sand in to refill the beach.

You should check out the Severn Bore in England. Happens with every high tide, and especially big with Spring Tides. People do surf it, trying to ride it for its whole journey.
