We know what tsunami is, and I also have the same question, why were they at the beach watching the water?! They weren't aware of how big the waves were, they only heard the warnings through the radio sent by a hunter who witnessed the landslide slipping down to the water, which caused big waves. Unfortunately, the other village was really hit worse than this, families lost their homes, boats and 300 sleddogs. 4 ppl missing. We've heard that the water didn't pulled back, only that huge waves were on the way. About 150 villagers has been evacuated to some cities, the dogs that survived are also evacuated. They don't know if it would be safe to go back to the villages, because there's still a huge part of the mountain that is cracked and can slide down anytime. I hope my English is well.
Honestly, I can't be the only one who's ever seen a tsunami video, so here's a tip: the oceans are not bathtubs and they don't have plugholes to let the water out. This means that when the sea goes out very far and very quickly it is CERTAIN to come back. So run away from it, you fools.

Terrifying! I understand that this was a "megatsunami", and therefore very different from a tsunami (the former caused by a landslide or rockslide, the latter by a tectonic event), and I do understand that this was rare, perhaps unprecedented, for this particular part of Greenland. Nevertheless, the HUGE waves in the distance were unmistakable, and they were moving at a rapid clip directly for the shore on which the people were standing. I have to wonder why they decided to tarry so long and look at the impending disaster. Do people get mesmerized by powerful natural events? I suppose that would explain storm chasing, and getting far too close to a tornado. Still, speaking personally, I'd like to think I'd run as fast as I could to high ground.
I was there. No actual waves at all, just a surge. As with all tsunamis, there is no actual waves of any great size. It is the surge of water that gets you. The written hights of waves one sees in records and youtube are not from the actual height of a wave, but the sea level height change of the surge. Big difference, but people keep believing the later. For example: The 2011 Japanese tsunami was one of the biggest in modern history. The largest actual, true wave generated by it only measured 25 feet.
There also needs to be more tsunami detecting buoy/satellite/sensor systems besides the ones in the Pacific Ocean. I know it's in the ring of fire and earthquakes (and volcanos) are much more likely to occur but that still isn't any excuse for the Indiana Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean to go without any equipment and sensors to warn people of possible impending tsunamis. It's not like there hasn't been some very deadly tsunamis hit there, I really think it's crazy that only the Pacific Ocean is monitored.
Greenland is quite isolated. They've not had the education that we have. It was probably astounding to them, to see such power as this. What would you have done if you didn't know about the displacement of water? Probably the same thing they did.
@@0clockedin0 I would know that that runout doesn’t happen every day. Something big is going on. It’s gonna comeback. I would’ve headed for one of those mountains.

So many commenters criticizing these people. These are villagers in Greenland, which is basically a subarctic colony, and many likely do not have access to, or in this case, pay attention to, the outside world. Let them live their simple life of wonderment, yes this was a dangerous scenario, but there are so few moments of organic human discovery these days that videos like this one are precious reminders of our natural human condition as simple settlers and explorers.
Parenting at its finest. Obvious sign something is wrong when the water starts flowing out to sea. How can you not know the warning signs of a tsunami when you live by the ocean.
So this is a rare event. A landslide far away triggered a 100 meter megatsunami. It quickly dissipated, but still manages to raise the water level far away from where it originated.
I live 600km away from the ocean, in a country where tsunamis don't occur. The only way it can is if the Canary islands gets swallowed into the ocean and even then it wouldn't cause serious damage. How is it that I, the person that should not be worried about tsunamis, know more about the warning signs of them than people who live right next to the water? I swear to God seeing people so oblivious to the signs that the tsunami is coming was so frustrating, seeing the chained animals go crazy, the tide suddenly receding and the oncoming wave and not one person being aware of that made me furious. Never mind if they are Inuits or whatever, they have phones, they have access to information, they should know better.
Having grown up in Hawaii, we all knew exactly what the Tsunami signs are and if any of them ever occur, especially a change in the water level not typical of usual wave activity.... get your ass to higher ground ASAP!! So sad.
I live in the middle of the US. I know what a warning signs are but yet people who live in these places can't tell that, "hmm, someone pulled the plug in the ocean." We truly are a bunch of dumb primates. Go gettem Darwin. These people tried to film a tsunami.
It's so strange how dogs freak out over big natural events. I remember the dogs going crazy just at the beginning of a total solar eclipse we had last year. I've also heard of dogs barking their heads off just before a big earthquake hits. Dogs must have an extra sense we don't have.
Had a dear friend and his wife lived through the Boxer Day tsunami in Buhket. The video of the lone guy standing on the beach frozen in terror is the view they had from the high ground they were on.
I'm sorry but what are these fools doing filming and starting at this tsunami until it actually hits & then they run like it just came upon them?! They had at least 5 minutes to get going, but they just stood here yelling about it. Sheesh!
To all the comments below, tsunami waves don't all start with water withdrawing from the beach. That only happens when the trough of the wave arrives first. Half the time the crest can arrive first and that may be seen as a large wave coming in.
I’m always amazed at the number of people today that STILL have no idea of what the sign of a tsunami is. They just stand there like deer in headlights until the water is at their feet🙄
Tides up that way can run 20ft or better. Check videos on Newfoundland Bay that will show you the dramatic rise and fall of high tide low tide. And if you've never seen it you might think you were in for a big one.
Literally Icebergs and snow suits on the 17th of June. I looked it up. June, July, and August are the warmest months, and it never gets above 50 for the high, and lows are in the single digits. It's never warm!!
This makes me so sad...for all of the villagers and for all of their sled dogs that were most likely secured with chains. It seems these people had never been educated about how tsunamis behave. Very sad. I hope we saw the worst.
strange no earthquakes even close to that part of Iceland. when you see the ocean waves creasting like they do in this video run to higher ground before they come in..
A huge landslide caused the tsunami. Seismograms showed an earthquake at the same time, but it has been determined that the seismic signals were generated by the landslide itself, not an earthquake.
actually geologist believe this tsunami was caused by a land slide. If a landslide is big enough and the ocean is in the direct path of the land slide it can cause a mega tsunami. Many times bigger then a tsunami caused by earthquakes. Here is a good read about the Mega Tsunami (largest recorded tsunami) in Alaska caused by a massive land slide. You can find many videos about this same tsunami here on Yourube.
Amazing how quickly the tide gets sucked out, before it comes rolling back in. During a big tsunami event like 2004, and 2011, the tide can get pulled out for miles, before it unleashes it's fury on the coastline
Why is it that the people who live along ocean coasts are the only ones who don't recognize the warning signs of a tsunami?
When the Vikings arrived in the 10th C Greenland had a much warmer climate than it does now. It's called the Medieval Warm Period.

The only thing that makes a tsunami a megatsunami is it's height. The source is irrelevant. Generally, anything above 100m is a megatsunami.
Simply yes
I was there. No actual waves at all, just a surge. As with all tsunamis, there is no actual waves of any great size. It is the surge of water that gets you. The written hights of waves one sees in records and youtube are not from the actual height of a wave, but the sea level height change of the surge. Big difference, but people keep believing the later. For example: The 2011 Japanese tsunami was one of the biggest in modern history. The largest actual, true wave generated by it only measured 25 feet.
If you're watching the water move like that for that long, you're dancing with the devil my friends.
There needs to be some worldwide education about what it means when the water dramatically runs out into the sea.
It's not like there hasn't been some very deadly tsunamis hit there, I really think it's crazy that only the Pacific Ocean is monitored.
and where would you have run to? couch comfort guespert
@@DLJ2890 no idea, but I know I wouldn’t be standing around looking at something so unnatural and thinking “Oh, this happens every day.”
I would’ve headed for one of those mountains.
and that water is COOOOOOOOOLD so not like u eeven wanna dip your toes in it hell no
I think she said, look at that big ass wave coming in, we should watch it..
dogs knew something was wrong
If Lassie would've been there... "Hey, Master... that water is looking kinda RUFF"...
Dogs new something was coming, the adults should have known right away.
Only thing worse then a wall of water coming at you is a freezing cold wall of water coming at you
The dogs are warning them.
Is this so called "beach living' I dream about? Must revise it.
And they standing there why? The word run should be universal.
Probably waiting for "somebody" to do "something" about it.
"there's a tsunami coming, I think our best chance for survival is to stand on the beach right at the waters edge......"
shooting the video is more important than life..
It quickly dissipated, but still manages to raise the water level far away from where it originated.
the dogs were smarter than the people..
* The dogs have stronger senses than the people.
They’re waiting for someone dumbass
@@lauragreen4612 no need to be rude ???
@@Calzonuda you were rude
@@lauragreen4612 what are you even talking about you came on here and called me a dumbass and you have the nerve to call ME rude???
It pisses me off that no one does anything to save the dogs & get them to safety poor babies are crying loudly
"i was going to run but then got cold feet"
🤣👍
Japan and Indonesia would’ve preferred this “tsunami”
When you see the water retreat quickly like that GET TO HIGH GROUND
Elizabeth M Yup. I'd be gone!
+Keisha hello
The dog in the background gave warning sounds. You can hear them in the beginning of this video. Amazing
Those aren't mountains... they're waves.
Rygith nailed it
... 😁..Interstellar
Thats a hell of a movie. So good
Brilliant woman filming
You can hear in the background, the dogs know what is happening.
NetVoyagerOne THEY F**KING BARK EVERY TIME YOU F**K!!
All I did while watching this Video was internally scream "RUN YOU FOOLS!!"
keep talking like your the expert you shit.
I have no idea why anyone that lives in the coast can't seem to recognize it. When the water goes one direction you go the other and fast.
Watching the water recede is eerie, a display of the massive power nature can unleashes
1:27 when the water stopped coming on shore...that's when I run!
Red L You ran too late dude
Red L
you think its a tsunami, run, as far and as fast as you can, don't stop because it won't and if it gets to you, life is over.
I wonder if those kids know what "Natural Selection" is?
Having grown up in Hawaii, we all knew exactly what the Tsunami signs are and if any of them ever occur, especially a change in the water level not typical of usual wave activity.... get your ass to higher ground ASAP!! So sad.
Obi-Wan Kenobi - "I have a high ground"
Tsunami - "Not this time my friend"
More of a surge than a tsunami. Even so, the setting and barking made it eerie.
That was a tsunami. Albeit a small one.
They do... Dogs have even warned their owners of on coming seizures their human was going to have.
Had a dear friend and his wife lived through the Boxer Day tsunami in Buhket. The video of the lone guy standing on the beach frozen in terror is the view they had from the high ground they were on.
I hope they were all safe.
Grab a case of beer and let's go down and watch the tsunami come in.
Greenland is ice
Iceland is green
The KeenTribe yup 😂😂😂
3 minutes of my life I'm not getting back. 😂
Greenland is beautiful in the summer.
If u see water turning slowly and strangely (most likely in a circle) and recedes you run
And not stand there
I'm sorry but what are these fools doing filming and starting at this tsunami until it actually hits & then they run like it just came upon them?!
Unmyia! Yelled from a person and dogs yelping... when you hear that in Greenland run!
Remember! If it looks WEIRD IT'S IS WEIRD!! RUNNNN
Who doesn’t know when the water recedes A LOT it’s gonna be hell on a wave coming back!
I’m always amazed at the number of people today that STILL have no idea of what the sign of a tsunami is. They just stand there like deer in headlights until the water is at their feet🙄
I ate a whole sandwich before they finally figured out we need to get to higher ground
You eat a lot faster than I do.
Rip all the poor poor animals that would have been able to run but were locked or tied up
Tides up that way can run 20ft or better. Check videos on Newfoundland Bay that will show you the dramatic rise and fall of high tide low tide. And if you've never seen it you might think you were in for a big one.
David Bennett - The first logical comment I've seen so far.
Literally Icebergs and snow suits on the 17th of June. I looked it up. June, July, and August are the warmest months, and it never gets above 50 for the high, and lows are in the single digits. It's never warm!!
As a fellow human I can say we are an incredibly stupid species who has no business being around nature.
The moment the ocean begins to pull away from the beach, you RUN!!
The dogs already knew it, but these idiots didn't realise, I hope atleast the dogs were not tied up.
Nice to see a different view for a change.
I like the part when they notice that it will eventually get to where they are.
If you ever see the water level decline rapidly, run for the hills
The dogs barks are creepy. Did they even survive is the question?
It would be nice if someone let us know what event this came from along with the video. Earthquake. Tsunami. Roque wave. Etc.
Ok. Thanks. Scary as ice cold water coming in like that.
This makes me so sad...for all of the villagers and for all of their sled dogs that were most likely secured with chains. It seems these people had never been educated about how tsunamis behave. Very sad. I hope we saw the worst.
Amazed at after the 2004 and 2011 Sea and Japanese Tsunami people still stand and watch.
What in the heck is that on the left? What's that weird transition in the horizon?
My only question is...
Why the fukk didn't they jump into the boat they were standing next to the whole time???!!!
LMFAO 😂
strange no earthquakes even close to that part of Iceland. when you see the ocean waves creasting like they do in this video run to higher ground before they come in..
Al Armstrong That's not Iceland but Greenland (Denmark)
A huge landslide caused the tsunami. Seismograms showed an earthquake at
the same time, but it has been determined that the seismic signals were
generated by the landslide itself, not an earthquake.
actually geologist believe this tsunami was caused by a land slide.
+T Rex geology.com/records/biggest-tsunami.shtml here is the link
Al Armstrong remember they have landslides under the ocean too..not to mention erratic gravity shifts in the poles
You live on the ocean. How do you not know what the hell is about to happen????
The most interesting things about to happen. Point camera at the ground and run!!!!
Amazing how quickly the tide gets sucked out, before it comes rolling back in. During a big tsunami event like 2004, and 2011, the tide can get pulled out for miles, before it unleashes it's fury on the coastline
