To be fair to the Lannisters and Tarlys: i) they had no choice (to fight and die, or to run or die, is an easy choice for me; fight, fight, fight) ii) they sacrificed themselves and still held formation under attack at 10:1 odds and while a huge dragon liberally bathed them in dragon-fire. If an army that huge on horses decides to run through you. They will. Lol
If you read any military history you'd know that forming a line or a square with shields and long spears or in later years with pikes or muskets/rifles with bayonets is one of the more effective ways to stop a cavalry charge! Horses tend to shy away from big pointy things that can hurt them!! Granted not 100 percent perfect! If a horse was hit and fell into a line that might give the horsemen a chance to get in and rampage before the defending troops closed up. Obviously having airpower negates that whether dragon or A-10 supplied!!!😁
Thanks for reminding me about the dragon. I am arguing that, assuming Drogon wasn't there, this battle is different than your usual early medieval heavy cavalry charge that had 1-2 ranks of horses. Here it seems that because there are 100k horses, the result would be more like a "Buffalo jump" in real life where the Lannister infantry is the cliff and the whole herd is gonna crash right off it (or into it). Even if the front line of horses refuse to charge, there are still probably 50k rank of horses behind them and they can't all stop at once.
I still can't believe how they made Jamie literally revert back to season 1 Jamie for no reason. Lost a decade of character development. I don't know what they were thinking
Tactically speaking, Drogon should have come in along one of the flanks parallel to the Lannister defensive line in his first pass. He would have broken the flank a lot easier.
All for show, wasnt any logic or tactic to it. The only thing that was a natural advantage was drogon over head distracting and causing the army to break rank, played right into the dothraki style of fighting, chaos- easy to slaughter the lannister army

Dany's forces return to Dragonstone only to be ambushed by Euron from inside the castle 6. Cersei plans to keep Missandei hostage until Tyrion seemingly threatening her unborn child triggers the execution 7. Jon comforts Dany and promises to be there for her 8. Jon and Dany land on dragons at the Red Keep after surrender. Cersei loyalists kill Rhaegal and Dany burns them to save/avenge Jon, who she doesn't realise has survived. Children die as collateral damage 9. Jaime is not captured by Dany, but makes it to the Red Keep on his own in time to be crushed with Cersei 10. Tyrion resigns as Hand and leaves to be Lord of the Rock 11. Jon kills Dany on his own initiative and escapes on Drogon 12. Tyrion can speak freely at the Council without a plot hole because he's there as a liege lord 13. The Council crowns Gendry, several Westeros lords want Jon dead before he's sent to the Wall, and Dorne and the Iron Islands are granted functional autonomy on condition of marriage to their neighbour lords (Gendry to Princess Arianne, Yara to Tyrion)

The sound right before the dragon’s fire 👌 chills. Ugh this show was so good!! I hate that it had to end the way it did. Season 8 started so good. Then after The Long Night it went off the rails. 🥺 Still makes me sad.
I remember watching this and thinking to myself, "Fuck a line you want your men in a square formation with your archers in the middle against lightly armoured cavalry" Then Drogon showed up. GG WP
The moment that dragon comes out of the clouds makes this one of the most epic battle fantasy battle scenes ever, right up there with the ride of the roghirrim
Imagine having such a crap military that the first time your commander is aware of an approaching enemy army is when he hears them across the battlefield. Scouts?
D&D: Randyll Tarly kinda forgot that he is supposed to be one of the best commanders in Westeros and decide to put his camp in open field with no scouts to patrol the area lmao
Bronn: Get back to King's Landing. Jamie:I'm not abandoning my army. Bronn: You're the commander, not a damn infantryman. Those fuckers are about to swamp us.Jamie: We can hold them off. Drogon: HEAR ME ROAR
Against a shield wall the Dothrakis wouldn't make much headway with a frontal charge - their horses should not have slammed into a line of soldiers with sharp spears. Instead pepper the Lannister army with arrows from a distance then charge in with heavily armored cavalry armed with lances, like the Parthians did in the Battle of Carrhae against the Romans. The dragon does change the equation slightly! :-)
Daenerys flies the dragons as if she was in telepathic communication with them. They go where she wants them to go without her needing to say anything. So why does she need to say "Dracarys"?
The only Lannister I like is Jamie and Tyrion of course though he is getting more fuzzy with his suggestions to Dany (it's war Tyrion. Stop being so wishy washy)
Dragons and Dothraki Screamers that every child from Westroes heard of at bedtime when they didn't eat their broccoli and were naughty. All the most horrible things were true and are standing in front of them. This battle was lost from the beginning.
2:26 Imagine being those guys on the left. You’re thanking the gods for sparing you, only to immediately realize all they did was delay the inevitable for a few minutes tops.
What always bothered me was that the Dothrakis are light cavalry with swords and should not be able to stand against heavy infantry with spears that significantly outrange their swords. In theory, they can still crash through heavy infantry with spears in formation, but they will take huge loses in men and horse before they can get close enough for a swing of their swords. Light cavalry is best used against disorganized troops or non-melee troops. To be fair, having a dragon does allow you to punch holes into an infantry line and create chaos that the light infantry and exploit. Deanerys should have really attack from the Lannister rear and flamed the entire line, rather than at one point.
I know they didn’t do this because of budget but it would have been so cool to see her bring all 3 dragons and see the three of them fly through the clouds and charge. Because really we didn’t really see all the of the dragons fighting as one that often we really only ever saw drogon but it would’ve just been bad ass for her to bring all her children and completely decimate the lannisters
@@NorthForkFisherman They were traveling so I get no fixed defenses. But to not even attempt to use the terrain to your advantage, that's just plain stupid. I’m just wondering how the horses didn’t scare & run away from the dragon. Maybe dothraki hoses get used to it. But Lannister horses should have been scared to death in this scene.
From the announcement of a potential spin off depicting Aegon's Conquest, it would be amazing to see Balerion the Dread in that one based off of what we are seeing in this scene.

The sound right before the dragon’s fire 👌 chills. Ugh this show was so good!! I hate that it had to end the way it did. Season 8 started so good. Then after The Long Night it went off the rails. 🥺 Still makes me sad.
The fact you can hear the Dothraki before even seeing them...that along with the music right before Drogon breaths fire will always give me chills
2:00 without a doubt the most badass scene in the hole series
I remember watching this and thinking to myself, "Fuck a line you want your men in a square formation with your archers in the middle against lightly armoured cavalry"
Then Drogon showed up.
Daenerys pressed; Up Up down down left right left right B A B A...
Daeny just gave them a sample here.. this is just a warmup of what she eventually did to King’s Landing..
Bronn: Get back to King's Landing. Jamie:I'm not abandoning my army. Bronn: You're the commander, not a damn
infantryman. Those fuckers are about to
swamp us.Jamie: We can hold them off.
Drogon: HEAR ME ROAR
My girl ride or die paving the way with her dragon for the her army a true leader 👍🏽💯👍🏽
Most satisfying scene for me and the stark family
You need to lower your settings mate, the fps is terrible
This here just shows what amazing actors Jaime, Bronne and the tarleys are. the look of fear seems so real
When you put the difficulty at “ Veteran” for the first time...
One of the most awesome scenes in Game of Thrones if not all in TV history. Still gives me shivers.
The score is so good in this scene
Against a shield wall the Dothrakis wouldn't make much headway with a frontal charge - their horses should not have slammed into a line of soldiers with sharp spears. Instead pepper the Lannister army with arrows from a distance then charge in with heavily armored cavalry armed with lances, like the Parthians did in the Battle of Carrhae against the Romans. The dragon does change the equation slightly! :-)
The Dothraki are SO badly researched/written. Light cavalry with no lances, few (if any) archers. lol
Danerys had the unmatched advance technology over others😉😉😉
“We can hold them off.”
Drogon: “Hold my beer”
Even AI in any Total War games is doing much better than D&D tactics 😂😂😂
There's no tactics against close air support... without proper air defense.
I love the dorthaki because they a perfect mix of apache and Mongola
ILI... LILI.. LILI.. LILI.. LI the spine chilling war cry of Dothraki Riders...
This showed us how danny took Kings landing so easily , they had false hope on Euron and his projectiles.
Facing a horde of Dothraki riders with a dragon flying in support, definitely a fuck me moment.
This is when GoT was still worth watching
So what's your trump card?
"DRAGONS"
YOU WIN
so amazed to see the dragons that they forgot the battle🤭
I saw this scene so many times
I swear this was epic for me
Dany looking so sexy too
“Let’s pop some mounted scouts on the hills while we work.” “Nah,it’ll be fine!”
I wish the ending had been as good as this episode.
Jammie face when hear dragon roar
😂😅
Daenerys flies the dragons as if she was in telepathic communication with them. They go where she wants them to go without her needing to say anything. So why does she need to say "Dracarys"?
The benefit of the viewers perhaps?
The only Lannister I like is Jamie and Tyrion of course though he is getting more fuzzy with his suggestions to Dany (it's war Tyrion. Stop being so wishy washy)
He has to he's a westerosi, a Lannister he saw his own people get butchered he most definitely feel bad for them.
True he isn't a war time consigliare
Well...look how ignoring Tyrion turn out.
Dragons and Dothraki Screamers that every child from Westroes heard of at bedtime when they didn't eat their broccoli and were naughty.
All the most horrible things were true and are standing in front of them. This battle was lost from the beginning.
2:26
Imagine being those guys on the left.
You’re thanking the gods for sparing you, only to immediately realize all they did was delay the inevitable for a few minutes tops.
Light cav charging an armored braced spear line and piercing through is the most fantasy thing of the show
2:18
The moment that you realize that you're fucked and that you brought a knife to a flamethrower fight!
Jamie: we can hold them off
"DRAGON ROAR"
I know they didn’t do this because of budget but it would have been so cool to see her bring all 3 dragons and see the three of them fly through the clouds and charge. Because really we didn’t really see all the of the dragons fighting as one that often we really only ever saw drogon but it would’ve just been bad ass for her to bring all her children and completely decimate the lannisters
I love how nobody has one simple group of ridders scouting ahead.
Just Dickon's face says it all. This is no battle anymore.
Tactical air support makes such a difference.
Form lines to receive a cavalry charge, but whatever you do, don't use the high ground a couple hundred yards behind you.
And not a bit of earthwork or other entrenchment in sight.
@@NorthForkFisherman They were traveling so I get no fixed defenses. But to not even attempt to use the terrain to your advantage, that's just plain stupid.
But then again, lets have this giant huge castle (Winterfell) or walled city (Kings Landing) and then place our troops in FRONT of the wall instead of on top of the wall.
I’m just wondering how the horses didn’t scare & run away from the dragon. Maybe dothraki hoses get used to it. But Lannister horses should have been scared to death in this scene.
Wait why is the frame rate so low? 😂😂
The real heroes are the soldiers who stood while the dragon came for them in flames....
We can hold them off:
Instantly hears dragon roar
From the announcement of a potential spin off depicting Aegon's Conquest, it would be amazing to see Balerion the Dread in that one based off of what we are seeing in this scene.
It takes Dany a lot longer to defeat a smaller Lannister force than the whole of the golden company and the Greyjoy fleet a season later? Interesting
First her official fight vs Laniaters more over she hadn't expirance vs Dragon slayer bow
Still having goosebumps❤❤
1:40 is it just me or is that horse looking in a peculiar direction
The music on dragon arrival gives me chills
Daenerys Stormborn LITERALLY brought the storm with her
