The first time I heard this song was in 1972 when the great Miss Ella Fitzgerald sang it at Baalbek international festival in Lebanon. The festival is held yearly outdoors between the ancient Roman ruins of the temple of Bacchus. Against the advice of her doctor that she may cause permanent damage to her vocal chords due to some kind of illness that she had, she went ahead and delivered an unforgettable performance. Her comment about not wanting to miss the Festival even if she never sings again is still engraved in my memory with the utmost respect. This is the music I grew up with. I had the great good fortune of seeing Louis in concert in 1957, and in 1956 I saw Ella perform live with Jazz At The Philharmonic. Most memorable, especially Ella!

As I've said many times, Angelina's covers can only benefit from close comparison to the originals, and this video is definitely proof of that. I've done this same thing before, just for myself, and I was impressed by the way Angelina uses the same general vocal arrangement of Ella's, but without sounding anything like Ella. To me, it sounds like she's modeling her vocal more on Dinah Washington (although I have yet to find Dinah Washington singing this particular song). BTW, in case listeners didn't catch it, there is irrefutable proof that this version by Ella and Louis is the exact recording that Angelina is basing her performance on, at 6:23 in this video, where you can hear Angelina singing softly to herself, away from the microphone, "Don't you say, oh…" at the same point in the song that Louis "ad libs" the same line. Very cool.

🧡. I never got to enjoy Ms. Ella's performances in person, however, I was one of the fortunate ones to enjoy her company in person. I was a room service waiter in the early 80s in Dallas, Texas. She was a guest of our hotel and I brought her breakfast one morning. In the mere few minutes with her in her room, I felt as if I was in the presence of a dear grandmother. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my 65 years. It seemed as if she wanted me to stay and keep her company. I regret not being able to do just that. I will take that memory with me to my next plain of existence and hope to find her there where I can do just that. Thank you for igniting that memory again and for this great piece of music.

Awesome job with the side by side. I have listened to her hundreds of times, and I still can't wrap my head around what she does and how she does it. As a jazz musician its just hard to phantom that a little girl could reproduce all of the subtle nuances. She has an crazy vibrato, outstanding phrasing and an amazing feel for the music, not to mention she is changing the arrangements to suit her voice. She is singing songs that require musical aptitude. it's not about about hitting notes or being on pitch as it is with most child singing . These are not straight forward songs. I have heard many wonderful little singers with great talent, but this girl is on a whole different level. How many 7 year old girls are singing this type of music.. most of them have probably not even ever heard of legendary artist like Ella or Billy Holiday or Frank Sinatra. I can't wait to see where she takes this gift. Unfortunately her music is from an era long gone, but I have a feeling that she is going to be able to take her amazing skill set and apply to more contemporary music. I have some of her originals and she exactly that. A true gift to the world, I just hope that all the world gets to hear the beautiful little girl sing. simply amazing!!!!

I never got to enjoy Ms. Ella's performances in person, however, I was one of the fortunate ones to enjoy her company in person. I was a room service waiter in the early 80s in Dallas, Texas. She was a guest of our hotel and I brought her breakfast one morning. In the mere few minutes with her in her room, I felt as if I was in the presence of a dear grandmother. She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met in my 65 years. It seemed as if she wanted me to stay and keep her company. I regret not being able to do just that. I will take that memory with me to my next plain of existence and hope to find her there where I can do just that. Thank you for igniting that memory again and for this great piece of music.

I have got to say, first, I love the gift you gave me today when I heard your "Legends Video".. I am taking my ipad with me tonight so I can listen to it as I am going to sleep. Second, i've just read the comments your fans have written and they are so charming and touching that I find I must thank all of them for such uplifting remarks, especially when they spoke of all the jazz legends they saw when they were young. Awesome job with the side by side. I have listened to her hundreds of times, and I still can't wrap my head around what she does and how she does it. As a jazz musician its just hard to phantom that a little girl could reproduce all of the subtle nuances. She has an crazy vibrato, outstanding phrasing and an amazing feel for the music, not to mention she is changing the arrangements to suit her voice. She is singing songs that require musical aptitude. it's not about about hitting notes or being on pitch as it is with most child singing . These are not straight forward songs. I have heard many wonderful little singers with great talent, but this girl is on a whole different level. How many 7 year old girls are singing this type of music.. most of them have probably not even ever heard of legendary artist like Ella or Billy Holiday or Frank Sinatra.
I can't wait to see where she takes this gift. Unfortunately her music is from an era long gone, but I have a feeling that she is going to be able to take her amazing skill set and apply to more contemporary music. I have some of her originals and she exactly that. A true gift to the world, I just hope that all the world gets to hear the beautiful little girl sing. simply amazing!!!!
