It really says something, that as a seasoned AJ listener, you still can go back to these early performances and get so much out of them. It is another incarnation of her. We are justified to say "she IS so good" about the early performances, rather than she was so good. She pulls us into the moment, making it present...lofty but true.

I've been following Angelina's career since she was young and these early jazz covers are amazing. I've listened to the great vocalists over the years and I think it takes 3 things to make a definitive version of a song; composer, performer and performance. First and most important is the composer, in this case the legendary George Gershwin. The importance of the composer is sometimes overlooked because they aren't physically present in the performance but their composition, in this case the timeless classic Summertime is the bedrock on which a classic performance is built. If you don't have world class material then you can't have a definitive version. Next is the performer, in this case Angelina Jordan, who even at this young age is on her way IMHO to joining the ranks of legends of the past. And lastly comes the performance. And this is where all three things come together to create a legendary version of a song. Here Angelina gives a stellar interpretation of the song with impeccable support from great musicians performing a great arrangement at a high level. Having said all that the point I want to make is going forward I believe Angelina will only be as good as the material she has to work with. Unfortunately composers like George Gershwin, only come along once in a lifetime, so I worry that Angelina may suffer from a lack of world class material. She will need a Gershwin or a Burt Bacharach to rise to the heights she does here. As her career progresses It will be interesting to see if she finds great material or if it finds her. I hope it does.
This is by far my favorite AJ version of this with KORK at age 10. In fact, all of her performances at age 10 are outstanding. This song, the orchestral arrangement, and her voice can soothe anybody's soul!
There are so many things to comment on with Angelina, but one thing I've noticed is that she instinctively makes eye contact with whichever musician has the important solo.
The pronounced "wide" vibrato that Angelina used in her NGT performance was simply a stylistic choice. The other three performances from that show do not have that kind of vibrato. Angelina has always enjoyed continuing to explore and experiment, and rarely ever sings a song exactly the same twice.
AJ has been killing us softly since she was 7 years old, and now she is taking the world by storm. How does one explain her abilities? The truth is, there aren't enough words because there is no one in our past, or more than likely in our future that will affect mankind as much as she has in the short period of time, she has been alive. The other two are the very young Dutch STUNNING SUPER SOPRANO Amira Willighagen and the ONE OF A KIND UNIQUE COMPOSER, VIOLINIST AND PIANIST Alma Deutcher. I know there are many more REALLY COOL talents World wide, but these 3 are the Cherry,s on the musical cake 🍰, all 3 in their own field.
It is watching these younger Angelina performances that gives new reactor’s a greater appreciation and understanding of how supremely gifted and talented she has been all of her sixteen years on this planet. What’s so remarkable about Angelina in general is that at any age (8 and 10 here) her voice never hides behind the arrangement. You hear everything. Even with a full orchestra behind her, the beautiful music never covers her vocals. You’d hear any flaw, but there was none. The younger version shows that Angelina can give us her unique take on a jazz classic, even at 8 years old. But by 10, we see clearly the vocal qualities of Angelina today. She slows down the original. Her voice is compelling-she is your focus because you’re waiting to see what she does with the next line. She interprets the lyrics so cleanly that we understand every word. And the restraint she shows, waiting for the music, is just amazing for a child. I love both versions.

How many 10-year-olds have you seen that get to perform with the top Orchestra in Norway she also did a version of Amy Winehouse Back to Black and that at that performance she also had a full Orchestra and then she did a performance at age 10 a Feeling Good or she was in a change Auditorium surrounded by musicians and knocked their socks off how is a 10 year old girl which she was when she did feeling good able to do that there's only one one answer and that is that she's a gift from God
As much as the difference in age and maturity between these performances (at 8 and 10 years old), I believe Angelina consciously changed her style to suit the audience and setting. The earlier NGT performance was intended to impress judges and "show off" both her mastery of vocal techniques and amazing control of her instrument -- because she was looking to gain votes in a talent show. The second performance wasn't judged (per se), but was instead a formal concert in front of a top-notch symphony orchestra. In that case, she made more subtle and sophisticated musical choices: not as wide a vibrato (as she wasn't "showing off") with more elegant and sophisticated melismas, making the performance musically impressive and uniquely her own. Yes, this may also partly reflect two years of growth as a performer, but I believe these differences more reflect a changed approach to the song to better suit the venue, audience, and accompaniment. In short, I believe the differences in these performances are more a reflection of Angelina's musicality than a reflection of improved vocal ability.
Insightful observations, me thinks, and Angelina's remarkable development over the several months of NGT must also be noted. You too, sir, clearly just love to hear her dance!
Great reaction. How is it possible for a little kid to appear to be such a seasoned professional? It can't be real. More baffling is how she makes people everywhere love her. The mystery of Angelina cannot be explained and will never be solved.
Angelina sings to the arrangement she is performing with, the first one was more of bluesy jazzy arrangement the second was a serene orchestral arrangement which demanded a different singing style , Angelina is the master class appropriate professional singer at any age she sings.

Sometimes more and sometimes she sticks closes to the original. If you want to see a drastically changes cover, you might like listening to her jazzy version of Billie Jean. She was 8 in the first and I think 10 in the second. In both she is sounding so amazing and making you feel that lazy summertime feeling. In the first one she follows the original of Ella and Louis closely (and adds stuff of her own). About what you sais that you would have liked to be with his family to hear Angelina sing an interesting fact told by Omer Bhatti who was one of the judges at NGT became a friend of the family and occasionally he brought Angelina in his car and during the journey Angelina spontaneously began to sing and Omer says that her was so dazzled by her voice that he stopped the car on the side of the read to listen to her and watch her sing . Omer told this fact in a Noerwegian TV show during an interview about his impressions about Angelina as a judge at NGT. This interview is always available on TH-cam.

The NGT version is modelled on Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's version. Fitzgerald's vibrato is quite pronounced but not as much as Angelina's. It always seemed to me that Angelina's was a little too much, but then that high note on "daddy's rich" is even better than the original in my view and sends shivers down my spine even after the 1197th listen, so I call it quits. Great reaction Jeff. I love it when reactors review different performances by Angelina of the same song some years apart. It really accentuates the consistent growth in her artistry over the years. 8 years old in the first one on NGT and 10 years old with Kork. With regards to her vibrato, it has similarities to the vibrato that Ella Fitzgerald employed when she performed this same song. Ella was one of the Jazz greats that Angelina listened to at a very young age and influenced her style. What I have noticed with Angelina is at a very young age, she knew what sound she wanted to create but didn't have as tight a control over her instrument to create the sound she wanted. Later in her career, as she gained better control, she was able to more closely get to the sound she wanted to create and it is remarkable. It is like a fine wine early in the aging process when you can tell the potential is there but the flavor is raw and unrefined. However, once it ages, the flavor becomes more refined and complex. Angelina and the Kork Orchestra is probably closer to the original production of "Summertime" while her NGT version is closer to what the Jazz singers were performing when they covered this classic. "Summertime" is one of many songs written by George and Ira Gershwin for the "Folk Opera" "Porgy and Bess" which opened in July of 1935. Since then many of the great Jazz artist of their time, like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Annie Lennox, opera singer Leontyne Price and many others have covered this timeless masterpiece.

She was 8 in the first performance l believe I heard she was 12 in the second. The 2nd version is IMO the most beautiful I have ever heard and at 72 I've heard many covers of the piece. She was 10 in the second and she had the arrangement slowed as her choice to or as a a measure of her interpretation and her maturity. IMO it is the most beautiful version of this classic Greschwin.

Yes you can definitely hear her growth between the two. One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that Angelina adjusts her vibrato and other embellishments to match the lead instruments, mood, and lyrics. In the first one, the trumpet was dominant, like in the Holiday/Armstrong version so her wider vibrato matched that. In the second one, slowed and softer, her vibrato and key changes better matched the Gershwin lilting score.
Hello Jeff. I would like to come up with something about this version of the song. This version is based on the original libretto by Gerswin. She has hardly added anything of her own, because this aria is one of the most beautiful arias in modern times. And here, too, you have to give Angelina the highest degree of praise. She sings it with so much emotion that shivers run down your spine after the other. For me, this is true master class!
Super idea contrasting these two lovely performances between 8 and 10. You should react to her live indoor performance of "Feelin Good" with full big band. The KORK version uses the original Gershwin arrangement and tempo. It was an aria from the opera "Porgy and Bess". Angelina's version seems to follow the voicing of Abbie Mitchell's 1935 version, but slowed down a bit and obviously in a lower register.

She had just turned eight before that performance which was the Finale. The one with the orchestra she was nine. She slowed it down quite a bit the second time. Orchestra did such a beautiful job with this one. Love this performance.
I greatly enjoyed your well articulated summation of both performances. I would also like to add that you keep in mind the fact that English is Angelia’s third language. Of course Norwegian is her first language followed by Farsi, Japanese and English.
@@103mrg The fact that she has Japanese heritage and that she has sang in Japanese indicates that she has a better grasp of the language than I do. As limited as her ability is that qualifies her as being capable of still being able to speak Japanese.

Heritage, singing and having a better grasp of the language than you have absolutely nothing to do with proficiency in a foreign language. Besides, Angelina has done several interviews in Japan on radio, called in to a TV show to honour a guest, and always needed a translator while she spoke in English.

I think when she began her 1st song Gloomy Sunday she was 7yrs then by Summertime she had a birthday making her 8 yrs. She was 10 in this clip.

When Angelina’s official debut single, “Million Miles” with Republic Records was released it was produced as a lyric video. All of the artwork used in the animation of the video were created and illustrated by grandma, Mery. The colorful outfit that Angelina wore in her A.G.T. cover performance of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” consisted of printed images of grandma, Mery’s paintings.

What’s so remarkable about Angelina in general is that at any age (8 and 10 here) her voice never hides behind the arrangement. You hear everything. Even with a full orchestra behind her, the beautiful music never covers her vocals. You’d hear any flaw, but there was none.
The younger version shows that Angelina can give us her unique take on a jazz classic, even at 8 years old. But by 10, we see clearly the vocal qualities of Angelina today. She slows down the original. Her voice is compelling-she is your focus because you’re waiting to see what she does with the next line. She interprets the lyrics so cleanly that we understand every word. And the restraint she shows, waiting for the music, is just amazing for a child. I love both versions.

How many 10-year-olds have you seen that get to perform with the top Orchestra in Norway she also did a version of Amy Winehouse Back to Black and that at that performance she also had a full Orchestra and then she did a performance at age 10 a Feeling Good or she was in a change Auditorium surrounded by musicians and knocked their socks off how is a 10 year old girl which she was when she did feeling good able to do that there's only one one answer and that is that she's a gift from God

As much as the difference in age and maturity between these performances (at 8 and 10 years old), I believe Angelina consciously changed her style to suit the audience and setting. The earlier NGT performance was intended to impress judges and "show off" both her mastery of vocal techniques and amazing control of her instrument -- because she was looking to gain votes in a talent show. The second performance wasn't judged (per se), but was instead a formal concert in front of a top-notch symphony orchestra. In that case, she made more subtle and sophisticated musical choices: not as wide a vibrato (as she wasn't "showing off") with more elegant and sophisticated melismas, making the performance musically impressive and uniquely her own. Yes, this may also partly reflect two years of growth as a performer, but I believe these differences more reflect a changed approach to the song to better suit the venue, audience, and accompaniment. In short, I believe the differences in these performances are more a reflection of Angelina's musicality than a reflection of improved vocal ability.
Insightful observations, me thinks, and Angelina's remarkable development over the several months of NGT must also be noted. You too, sir, clearly just love to hear her dance!
Great reaction. How is it possible for a little kid to appear to be such a seasoned professional? It can't be real. More baffling is how she makes people everywhere love her. The mystery of Angelina cannot be explained and will never be solved.

Angelina sings to the arrangement she is performing with, the first one was more of bluesy jazzy arrangement the second was a serene orchestral arrangement which demanded a different singing style , Angelina is the master class appropriate professional singer at any age she sings.

The first one was after Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. I believe the pronounced vibrato was a choice by Angelina to express the baby's "cry" in the story. The second version is closer to the original (older version) by George Gershwin for his opera Porgy and Bess in 1935.

She was 8 in the first and I think 10 in the second. In both she is sounding so amazing and making you feel that lazy summertime feeling. In the first one she follows the original of Ella and Louis closely (and adds stuff of her own). About what you sais that you would have liked to be with his family to hear Angelina sing an interesting fact told by Omer Bhatti who was one of the judges at NGT became a friend of the family and occasionally he brought Angelina in his car and during the journey Angelina spontaneously began to sing and Omer says that her was so dazzled by her voice that he stopped the car on the side of the read to listen to her and watch her sing . When I listen to the NGT performance I always feel excited. On the other hand, with the second one I feel so relaxed ❤️
The NGT version is modelled on Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's version. Fitzgerald's vibrato is quite pronounced but not as much as Angelina's. It always seemed to me that Angelina's was a little too much, but then that high note on "daddy's rich" is even better than the original in my view and sends shivers down my spine even after the 1197th listen, so I call it quits. Great reaction Jeff. I love it when reactors review different performances by Angelina of the same song some years apart. It really accentuates the consistent growth in her artistry over the years. 8 years old in the first one on NGT and 10 years old with Kork. With regards to her vibrato, it has similarities to the vibrato that Ella Fitzgerald employed when she performed this same song. Ella was one of the Jazz greats that Angelina listened to at a very young age and influenced her style. What I have noticed with Angelina is at a very young age, she knew what sound she wanted to create but didn't have as tight a control over her instrument to create the sound she wanted. Later in her career, as she gained better control, she was able to more closely get to the sound she wanted to create and it is remarkable. It is like a fine wine early in the aging process when you can tell the potential is there but the flavor is raw and unrefined. However, once it ages, the flavor becomes more refined and complex. Hey Jeff!! And I thought I had already left a comment on this video. Angelina and the Kork Orchestra is probably closer to the original production of "Summertime" while her NGT version is closer to what the Jazz singers were performing when they covered this classic.
"Summertime" is one of many songs written by George and Ira Gershwin for the "Folk Opera" "Porgy and Bess" which opened in July of 1935. Since then many of the great Jazz artist of their time, like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Annie Lennox, opera singer Leontyne Price and many others have covered this timeless masterpiece.

The 1935 version with Kork, when she was ten, is one of my top ten favs of hers.
She was 8 in the first performance l believe I heard she was 12 in the second. The 2nd version is IMO the most beautiful I have ever heard and at 72 I've heard many covers of the piece. She was 10 in the second and she had the arrangement slowed as her choice to or as a a measure of her interpretation and her maturity. IMO it is the most beautiful version of this classic Greschwin.

Yes you can definitely hear her growth between the two. One thing I’ve noticed, though, is that Angelina adjusts her vibrato and other embellishments to match the lead instruments, mood, and lyrics. In the first one, the trumpet was dominant, like in the Holiday/Armstrong version so her wider vibrato matched that. In the second one, slowed and softer, her vibrato and key changes better matched the Gershwin lilting score.

Hello Jeff. I would like to come up with something about this version of the song. This version is based on the original libretto by Gerswin. She has hardly added anything of her own, because this aria is one of the most beautiful arias in modern times. And here, too, you have to give Angelina the highest degree of praise. She sings it with so much emotion that shivers run down your spine after the other. For me, this is true master class!
Super idea contrasting these two lovely performances between 8 and 10. You should react to her live indoor performance of "Feelin Good" with full big band. Elle Fitzgerald version was inspiration for 1st version and it was vibrato heavy.
This is true but Angelina’s delivery is much more exaggerated and sounds more artificial than Elle’s version.
The KORK version uses the original Gershwin arrangement and tempo. It was an aria from the opera "Porgy and Bess". Angelina's version seems to follow the voicing of Abbie Mitchell's 1935 version, but slowed down a bit and obviously in a lower register.

She had just turned eight before that performance which was the Finale. The one with the orchestra she was nine. She slowed it down quite a bit the second time. Orchestra did such a beautiful job with this one. Love this performance.

Heritage, singing and having a better grasp of the language than you have absolutely nothing to do with proficiency in a foreign language. Besides, Angelina has done several interviews in Japan on radio, called in to a TV show to honour a guest, and always needed a translator while she spoke in English.
