FINALLY! The Supremes! The first ladies of Motown!! Diana Ross was only 16 when The Supremes put out their first single. In 1964, they had FIVE CONSEUCTIVE #1 hits - "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", and "Back In My Arms Again". And they had SEVEN more #1 hits after that! Really, as far as female groups go, you can't get much bigger than this. The original lineup consisted of Diana, Mary Wilson (who sadly passed last year), and Florence Ballard (who, even more sadly, died at the tender age of 32 in 1976.) Diana is now 77 and is still going. In fact, she released her 25th studio album just last year!

The Supremes are the very definition of Motown. Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard were the original singers and whose voices you hear on this song. Mary Wilson had a bit of a solo career but none reached the heights of Miss Ross. They are still one of the best selling girl groups of all time. From “Baby Love” to “Someday We’ll Be together”, you can’t go wrong. Active in the 60s and 70s.

Mary Wilson, who sadly passed away last year was an original member of the Supremes. Mary Wells was a solo artist with Motown. In fact Mary Wells had the first hit with Motown. Check out My guy by Mary Wells.

    • @charlenezack37

Mary Wilson, NOT Mary Wells, who was another Motown singer. Mary Wilson (born March 6, 1944) is an American vocalist, best known as a founding member and longest member of the Supremes. Wilson remained with the group following the departures of other original members, Florence Ballard in 1967 and Diana Ross in 1970. Following Wilson's own departure in 1977, the group disbanded. Sadly Mary Wilson died a year and a day ago.

The Supremes were one of the best Motown girl groups from the 60's. Most of their early material was written & produced by Berry Gordy or Smokey Robinson. They had so many great hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Back In My Arms Again", "I Hear A Symphony", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Love Is like An Itching In My Heart", "Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone", "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together" etc.

Funny fact. This song was written by the Motown team Holland-Dozier-Holland, two of which were in relationships with the Supremes. The other one got busted in a motel room by his wife when he was with another woman. The wife started busting up the room when he said "Stop! In the name of Love." Then he thought it would be a great idea for a song and the rest is history.

I was in the front row seats when The Supremes came to Glasgow (Odeon Cinema which doubled as a theatre), as part of The Motown Review Tour, in 1965, and television couldn't do Motown justice. The live performances (nothing was mimed - or lip synching as you say in the USA) were hot.
Earl Van Dyke Six was the backing band - it was really The Funk Brothers, anyway. Top act, for me was Smokey and The Miracles; we also had, Martha and The Vandellas (as good a female group as any); Liitle Stevie Wonder (he was only 14) who was sat at his drum kit and sang, played drums and harmonica (he'd had his hit 'Hey Harmonica Man). A magical night in Glasgow

They rivaled the Beatles. When they performed this live, their backs were turned and they whipped around and held up their hands as they sang STOP. (You might want to watch them perform this live) This came out around 1965. The band for almost all Motown songs is called The Funk Brothers. James Jamerson is a legendary bass player. There is a documentary about the band called "Standing In The Shadows of Motown." BTW, Tracee Ellis Ross (the mom on Blackish) is Diana Ross's daughter.

The greatest female group of all time...
Too many songs from them to recommend but as others have said you need to see the live performances to get the whole package.
The only problem with watching all the hits from first The Supremes to present day Diana Ross is that you'd never leave the house for at least a year 😀

This song was a hit during my undergraduate years, as were “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “My World is Empty Without You,” and “You Can’t Hurry Love.” The Supremes continued to be on my playlists long after that. One I especially recommend is “Reflections,” which is from that magical summer of 1967 (think Doors, Procol Harum, etc.), my first year as a grad student in southern California.

If you watch the "We are the World" music video about the making of the video-Diana is the only one that has an incredible pitch perfect, amazing voice during every rehearsal. I did not even know how beautiful her voice was until I saw that and I listened to the Supremes growing up.

Motown! That SOUND! The arrangements were always incredible. The Supremes were idolized in my house. My mom always bought their albums and we always loved the way they looked, their wardrobes, they had so many great great hits. And Diana Ross is so distinctive voice. I wish this video had showed them singing, or showed a montage of photos of them. But, so glad you finally heard them. Love love love them

Now you are talking. This is the group. Motown and women with amazing voices. This is a group I have never stopped listening to since I first heard them in the 60’s. Their sound was just theirs. So many hits. Where Did Our Love Go is my favorite. Diana Ross also played Billie Holiday n Lady Sings The Blues and was just amazing.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough!! Diana Ross was by far the most famous in her single career. Supreme Mary Wilson and Tom Jones had a long time relationship.

3 girls from the Brewster Housing Projects in D-town. Stevie Wonder from the same area. Very humble start, they were just trying to make a name & get out of the ghetto. Barry Gordy saw in them what no one else did.
