I remember reading basically every dirt bike/motoX magazine I could find every month. I only knew of Dave Thorpe through those means. I live here in the U.S. Not much European coverage in those days.
Dave Thorpe and other were extremely fortunate to live in a legendary time, with legendary men, riding legendary machines.
Kudos Max a truly remarkable video.

You have knocked it out of the park with this video Max. This is without doubt the best motocross bike ever built and to have both Dave and Keith give their thoughts on this stunning machine. Probably, in my humble opinion… the best 999Lazer video to date. Amazing stuff. 😎🤩🥰

Dave Thorpe rode like the wind. I haven't rode in years, the 70's and 80's was my time, it feels like a lifetime ago. In my opinion the mid 80's was the pinnacle of the sport.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yep---until the 1986 production rule was forced on the USA only. That tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years, and the EPA dictatorship forced 4-stroke bike almost tripled the cost again. No racers in the top 20 coming out of Michigan anymore. Last factory rider was Kelly Smith over 2 decades ago now for KTM. The sport is dead,--where it was so alive in Michigan. Probably much the same in your area.

So wonderful to see some of these bikes have survived. I've had a fascination with HRC works bikes since 1993 when a magazine (I think it was Motocross Action) did a test of the then-new production CR250 against a 1983 works bike and the basic conclusion was that the '83 was every bit as good as the '93. The idea that ten years of development on the production bike hadn't eclipsed the works bike was just wild to me.

I was seventeen years old ,when I was lucky enough to watch DT crash at the start of the GP at Farley Castle in 1986 and make his way from last place to win that race. What a legend. I drooled over this bike as a teenager and loved to see what the HRC factory team guys could come up with, to give the team an edge, over the competition. If I remember correctly the bike was tuned to behave more like a four stroke with much wider power band than most two strokes and this is how DT was able to ride this bike with only 4 gears, which resulted in less gear changes producing faster lap times. This was enabled by the wizardry of the HRC factory engineers. I would love to know more about how the bikes were reunited with their internal components. I ecpect there were many versions of those parts, due to the rapid development done by the HRC guys. Its also interesting how this bike helped to show how 4 strokes engine characteristics had some advantages over their 2 stroke cousins and how they dominate the series now. Sad to see the demise of the 2 stokes though.

Such a work of art! The epitome of “form follows function” as applied to the design of a motocross motorcycle. This was the pinnacle of the works bike era. I miss that time so much, the exotic factory bikes. All the Japanese manufacturers would blow our minds almost monthly with the progress from around 1976 to 1986. And the production bikes followed suit, with massive changes every year. It was magical!

Oh man...if I dig into my old photos, I took pictures of his bike at the 1986 USGP at Carlsbad. I also took shots of CR500 that Ricky Johnson rode that day. Afterwards ,I spent hours comparing the two bikes. I always thought that the front fender brace on Dave's bike was cool. I also remember Johnson's bike having the first inverted fork that I had ever seen. Dave was a great rider. A true champion, for sure.

It was a great experience to see Dave & his Father relive these experiences. To me, Dave Thorpe was the Honda CR/RC specialist on these absolute rockets..
I had an 83 Suzuki RM 500.. 4 speed, but oh my the power just put a grin across your face.
Then in 92 I brought the CR500 86 model.. My shoulders still feel pulled out there sockets 😂… Absolutely mental machine. I never raced either, but I had some amazing experiences on both bikes.
Really wish I’d of kept them now…
Thx for sharing this great video Max.. ✌🏼

I had no idea that Dave had it in him, taking out another rider. The 1986 series is one of the best with 20 points separating first from fourth, Thorpe, Malberbe, Geboers, Jobe.

@@999lazer Yea, good. But lets be honest too. The competition is not very knowledgeable, and have awful ideas that they propagate. I mean,--for one example, it is about time that Gypsy clown got rid of the star wars toys in his studio background. :) Now, just for one example of many, he talks about getting rid of privateers.
If those guys are not easy to beat,----mankind is doomed. bummer

26:09 looks like a head coolant leak there. I would have been a good factory mechanic,---for 2-strokes. I should have tried when I was ready. Would have been a great experience.

Yep, 1986, the year the FIM stopped factory development in the USA with the 1986 production rule,--of course, only for the USA.
The year Johnny O'Mara beat this 500cc factory works bike,---on a production based 125, with team USA winning the MXofN for the next 8 years on production based bikes.
Beautiful bikes Honda made back then though. I wish they would do a production run for nostalgic reasons,---and vet racing. The Pro's would be jealous. :)
