This breaks my heart. As a teacher and as a human. I'm a drama teacher so I feel strongly about protecting my dramalings. I have many kids who are struggling with identity and sexuality... and even just being themselves any way that is. I will fiercely protect them, love them and guide them. I could never turn away. I am so glad you found your way, Matt. Like I told you in NY at pianos the BARE cast recording has helped so many of my kids (I am so thankful I got to say that to you in person... eek... fangirl moment!). One student of mine even played 'see me' to come out to his mother because he couldn't speak the words. Another came out to me using 'role of a lifetime' because he wanted me to 'know'. I've used 'No voice' to create theatrical pieces in class. Your voice has been heard singing beautiful songs and telling wonderful messages all the way over here in Australia in a little town you'd never hear of otherwise. How amazing is that? It sure does get FREAKEN BETTER!! xx Thank you,Thank you x
I just saw "Private Romeo" and I'm in love with you...I feel that you helped me stand out for who I am and that being you is normal and okay and AWESOME! You told me to not give up and that I will find someone! :) Thank you so much Matt...you are definitely someone I look up to. Thank you! I also find you to be very attractive....I know that sounds weird to some people because I am a guy, but to me it's just another normal thing in my life! :)
Matt- I don't know if you'll ever read this, but I want to thank you so much for posting this. I can't tell you how much it means to hear people that I look up to and respect have been through it all. I was relentlessly bullied and still, sometimes, wonder if I'm going to get through it and... Just, Thank you. For this, and everything. You're a beautiful human being.
Good for you Matt. I've spent my entire teaching career trying to ensure that bullies don't get away with what they did to you. But on the flip side I have also had to tell bullied kids exactly what you said: that it does make you stronger, and it does get better. I can say that from experience, for I too was bullied and called the same names you were. It made me stronger and it did get better. The smile on your face mirrors the smile I have seeing you happy and successful. You're a good man.
I was born with a physical disability so I have used a wheelchair full-time since birth pretty much. All through school I was bullied for being different, but there were some good stuff too. I discovered my love of reading and art and history. I got involved with my drama club and became a member of my thespian society in high school. I am an ally for gay lesbian, and Transgender people. I won't tolerate that kind of ignorance. I also struggle with depression and fear that I will never be good enough, but your message touched me so much that I literally cried. I also am very thankful for my mother she has been with me every step of the way.
Matt, you shared a very personal aspect of your life - one that many would bury deep in their conscience; and spend their whole lives attempting to prevent it from resurfacing. Speaking to people on such a personal level, people you have never even met, is a display of your compassion and kindness. I hope you know you've saved quite a few lives by being so open and caring. I wish I had someone like you to help me through my dark times when I was younger. Thank you for sharing!
You are right, Matt. Love and a better life ARE around the corner. It does get better eventually. It may be hard to believe now, but you're a living example of how it gets better. To all those kids who make fun of us for being different, or tell us that we're worthless, thank you, because you make us who we are today. You make us strong.
Your words bring back so many harsh memories. What you went through is somewhat similar to what I went through. I'm past it now, things have gotten better. In a weird sort of way, I think what I went through made me a stronger person who knows his mind. These postings are so important to let people know that no one is alone. I believe they have helped and will continue to help. Thank you for sharing! BTW...You have a beautiful singing voice!
Matt, I grew up in a small town in Texas, had the same experiences, and moved to a larger school my senior year. I sincerely value your story and your passion. I saw you in both War Horse in NYC and Giant in Dallas and I think you are an incredible talent and role model. Keep up the great work and spreading the love!
Well done, Matt. I knew you would be putting one up on here and I knew you would know just what to say - and you did. You are walking, talking, living, breathing proof that it does get amazingly better. Thank you! And, to all those reading & watching this who are going through similar aituations, please latch on to the words Matt said -"own yourself" - make that your daily goal. This is your life and no one can take it from you - and it get SO much better every single day.
Matt, I just saw this now but I wanted to say how touched I was by this video. I am not a person who has experienced the worst bullying, but I've seen it much more often and I see so many of my friends put themselves down or see others be made fun of and you just reminded me of what I truly believe in and what I stand for. I hope one day I can make a differnece in people's lives especially high schoolers who need help. Thank you for being so open.
God Bless Matt Doyle. You and Ryan Steele are rays of light in the darkest night. Your talents are boundless... you and Ryan are loved more than you'll ever know.
Thank you for this post one of my sons is gay he was bullied through secondary school, he came out to me when he was sixteen i already knew and just told him you are unique and beautiful the people who bully you are the ones who do not know who they are be your self.luckily my other three sons and my daughter all love and support him he is now in his twenties school days forgotten.with love and support we can overcome the narrow minded bullies/bigots/homaphobes of this world, love to all.xx
This was the most poingant, truthful video I have seen. Thank you so much for giving a voice to those of us who have been beat down and feel like their voice is not as worthy. This video gave me a new sense of hope for the future and if I ever am taunted or teased again this video will help me through. Thank you so much Matt, this video means more to me than you will ever know :)
Hey Matt - thanks for posting. These words hit close to home...we have pretty similar backgrounds. Please continue the great work... I have both of your albums and those, along with the happiness that you radiate, encourage me each time I listen to them. Very proud of you!
You are just such a pure soul matt... This video really helped me through my daily anxiety attack. Thank you for being such an inspiring and kind role model to so many people young and old.
You are so beautiful inside and out. I am a middle school teacher, and I always stand up for my students. I promise that there are those of us who don’t stand for hurt. I am so sorry that you had to experience what you did. I do think you are an amazing person as an actor and singer, but also for your loving heart which shows through in everything you do. God blessed the world with you. I am blessed just getting to listen in on your wonderful life.
You just reminded me of my Director of Bands when she told me all of this as I came to terms with who I am. I am thankful to God for people like her and yourself. I only hope to see the day when things get better. Thank you very much for this video. May you be blessed in all that you do.
You shine... with a smile so bright. The contagious joy from your center makes everything all right. Your words cure my ills, a wind of fresh light... thanks for your past to prove you are right: It gets better...
And friend, you became a swan, with a beautiful attidude and serious talent.....you overcame all the odds....you shouldn't have been treated like that, no kid should...... Now you are a serious example to all of us interested in standing up and fighting just like you. i'm so glad you found Community Theatre...... Just thank you for a wonderful vid.
Nice to see you doing a it gets better video, Matt. After watching your videos for nearly a year on youtube, I think you have a fantastic voice and wish you much more success in the future :)
Mothers and fathers are the best people in the world. I'm so thankful each and every day for my parents. The older I get, the more I realize just how wonderful and giving and supportive they are. Great message, Matt.
Just came across your heartfelt video while checking out your chat with Etai Benson about the revival of Company. and plan to include this video in my Blog. Though this video was made over 10 years ago, the message never grows old. As important as it was then equally important today/ Thank you.
Thank you for that video, your words have touched my heart. In this moment of my life i'm quite lost, but you helped me a lot with this and with your songs in Bare: a Pop Opera as Peter. I feel grateful for having discovered you through the catalan version of the musical which is being done right now in Barcelona.
I want to say thank you Matt for this video. A year and a half ago I stumbled upon this video when I was scared and felt alone about being gay. I was trying to convince myself that I wasn't. But after watching this video I was able to muster up the courage to accept who I am and chose to never look back. And for that I can't thank you enough. Not only are you an inspiration to me as a performer, but you're my idol for showing me that being who I am is the best thing in the world. Thank you.
Hi Matt! After watching this video and hearing your life story, all I can say is more power to you! I went through some of the same things that you went through, but fortunately, like you, I had community theater as somewhat of a solace. I also had writing. People can be so utterly shallow. You and I have come to realize that. I'm glad that you were able to supersede not only them, but their words as well. I wish you nothing but the best of luck on all of your future creative endeavors.
I just stumbled across this video, and just want to say thank you, so so much for making and posting this. You have no idea the impact it has had on me in just the last couple hours. Thank you so so much.
Thank you so much for posting this. I experienced a lot of the same things that you did during middle school, as far as the faculty turning a blind eye to those bullying me. I'm in college now, but I know others will benefit from this video greatly. I loved your work in Private Romeo, keep being fantastic. I wish you all the best in your lead role in The Book of Mormon as well :) Thanks again Matt
Thanks, Matt, for sharing your experiences. I am sorry that some teachers did not take their responsibility seriously resulting in you getting bullied.
Thank you, Matt You inspire through your work and I think you should know that as a fan, it´s so heartwarming to see your favorite singer do his part helping others....you are a beautiful person...
The last minute of this video changed my life. It was the first time I looked at myself and didnt think I was a stupid, ugly, seventeen year old gay guy with no future or worth. You've inspired me so much with your work on broadway, and now personally with this. Thank you so much.
Kids can be very mean! I'm sorry, I tried not too cry... but I did. I didn't expect this from a person who is so filled with life and self-confidence as Matt Doyle! Thank you for this video and, for telling your story. Maybe more people will find the strength too do so too. Thank you!
: Matt, Thank you so very much for sharing your experience. Many of us can relate to various aspects. I am so happy that you did not commit suicide. The world is a much more beautiful place because of you. With love, Espen [San Diego, CA]
i went through a lot of the same things you went through and i realized i tried going to people who i thought would help me and didn't, i was fat and people called me horrible names but i got to a low place like you did, so i helped myself i dropped the weight and worked out and i look amazing but then i took a bad path and found the guy that made me feel so worthless and beat the crap out of him after i was suspended, i came back to school and all of my glory faded but i got better :) a lot :)
That is a wonderful strategy. I am going to implement all of those parts. Unfortuantely, reminding the students of the rules and pointing to the rules does not always work so I need to improve my tactics. Thank you for shairing a strategy that works for you.
Thank you. I'm 15, a freshmen in high school, everyone told me when I got to high school things would be a lot different and better. I'm gay, and I live in a little town... Kids don't get what it's like around here. I have to sit alone at lunch everyday in the hall just to avoid being singled out. You've gave me hope.
To found our happyness, I think that we need basically three things, self-knowledge, self-understanding and self-loving. And we live in a society that's always giving us behaviour patterns, and telling us what is right or what is wrong. We need to break up this bubble we're in. We need to fight against it. Our weapons are the arts. I really admire you, and i feel inspire by you, cause you're brave, and you are so clever and so talented, i really hope to meet you anytime. Best wishes. And thanks.
I just watched your video on bullying. Thank you for speaking out. I'm not a victim of bullying, but I have been depressed for the last 6 years for reasons I won't necessarily get into, but I was going to kill myself but ended up in a psychiatric hospital. I've also been cutting. Thank you for showing that things do get better. I would like to study musical theatre in college, and you give me hope that I can make it. Thank you so much.
Matt I love your story, I live your confidence and you're acting is phenomenal! Keep up being an amazing kind person! You're the perfect role model! :))
Thank you for posting this. I had a similar experience -- went to a new school, they'd all known one another since kindergarten, and I was the weird new kid. I'm a straight female, but rumors that I was gay, along with being shy, smart, and busty, led to me being bullied. I had glue dripped in my hair routinely while my "friends" saw and didn't intervene, had nasty notes passed to me, left my guitar at school and someone broke it, etc. It's so important to keep perspective and hope.
thank you for this video i too was bullied with words and with action. i just watched Private Romeo for the first time and it's brilliant thank you for your words and your talent continue doing what you do best.
Matt, you are someone to look up to. I really appreciate this video, it made me think about what others say to me, and I how I should just learn to ignore what they say, and believe in what I believe is true. I am a sophomore in high school and I've still got some time to figure out who I am, but I'm not going to let anyone's say change me or who I want to be. I saw you in Private Romeo the other night, and I don't know if you'll see this, but you are really beautiful. Thanks a lot Matt. -Pheng
Wow! Thank you So very much for sharing your story and for the strength it must have taken to get through it all to become living proof that It Does Get Better. Namasté
Thank you, Matt, for your wonderful story. I am sure that you have helped many, many young people with this video. It was quite effecting and touching. Well done!
I don't know that there is clinical evidence that these videos in this movement, actually reduce suicide or other forms of self harming behavior, but it sure as hell is worth a shot. You tube did not exist in my day. I recall very few moments when anyone reached out to me in my isolation. But I do recall a pe teacher, and coach with whom I had no interaction, who's classes I was never in, one day walking by me, and asking if I was ok, if I needed help or to talk. No reason on earth for him to do that, unless he saw inherent worth, nobody else cared to notice. I said 'no' that day and never spoke to him afterwards. but I hung on to his interest, his compassion for a few more months until another tidbit was thrown my way. These adults would see a lot more, if they knew the impact their 'seeing' might have.
Ive been through a lot of this&still am i'm 17&dress completely different from the way the kids at my school do except for a few people. I was bullied in middle school and I've been told by other people to kill myself, that i'm ugly&worthless&more. I went to a really bad place&ended up regretting it. But the bad part is the 1 guy I thought really cared about me called me stupid and slut and other names and it was just completely horrible. and I really hope it does truly get better.
I salute you. As teachers (and supposedly role models for our pupils), we mustn't tolerate bullying. Fortunately for me, the private and Christian school that I worked in had a code of conduct expected from pupils. I put a copy of that on the wall, and point it out to the offender why I was going to report him to his homeroom teacher and write him a detention slip.
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SHARING, We need to help one another from the bulling , i was bully to, it suck .. , thanks to my mom and brother for always be there for me because it does hurt It does get better , i'm a chef now and i have Love ,Beauty and friends in my life now and i;m happy. So Matt thanks again for being so Beautiful
Great video Matt! I was short and chubby with braces in middle school. Made fun of for all. I was spit on in PE also by the "popular" guys. no one ever did anything. As a substitute teacher now, bullying is something I keep an eye out for. I am happy that your mom was there for you because your a great singer and I am very happy that I get to watch you on here.
I am so glad you posted this and I am sure it will help many people, so please don't take it down for a long time. I think you are wonderful and insightful, talented and absolutely beautiful. I remember hearing so many gay men killing themselves over being gay and feeling not accepted. I never really experience bullying as you did, but being a gay man, yes I can relate in that respect. Glad you are still around my friend. I recently saw "Private Romeo" and man you were great and when I heard you singing, I became a big fan. Big Thanks, Martin Gonzalez.
I wish i could find someone to talk to 'cause i'm in a pretty bad place right now. I don't know if it gets better but i'm hopeless and i'm not sure if i could take it any longer...
Matt you know that you are a star I have followed your career and your voice is amazing. As I approach 50 I will not allow anyone to be homophobic in my presence. I wish I understood this at 12 or 13. It does get better guys ,ignorance will always be there but you are all better than that - you know yourself and they are afraid of that. Love to all you gay guys at all ages. x
I tried to make her more familiar with gays, but obviously failed. But looking at you Matt I feel stronger. You are so beautiful and strong and I just wanna be like you. I'm looking forward to future. I'm sure it will get better.
Matt- Who knows if you will read this, but i thank you so much. I know its been here for almost a year, but seems to have found me at the perfect time. I was able to send it to my best friend, who is wanting to come out so bad, but is so afraid of what others might think of him. I sent him this and now is goal is to one day may a vid like urs for the world to see, no matter what you can make it. Things like these videos give him the courage he needs to tell more then just me he is gay. :)
Amen, thank you so much Matt. What an incredible story. Thank you so much for sharing. It is nice hearing from a gay actor. (of course I appreciate the straight actors showing support. Hearing from one who has had the actual experience is grounding in thought and heart) I may be 61 yo, but Matt - "you da man"!
Wow the things that happen in America, this dosnt happen to much in Australia like ive never seen it happen before, but i guess bullying like this happens everywhere
@mattfdoyle Ciao Bello! Matteo Bello! (Matthew) Grazie for throwing in as it were on a "Campaign" that is so dear to my heart! Also thank you for calling out the adults and authority figures that "Turned a Blind Eye" at the time, this was also endemic when I was growing up! Your wonderful affirmation of the "Goodness" and beauty of live, truly warms the heart of Bobby Griffiths' (Prayers for Bobby) old lover/boyfriend "Blaine" here! I'm both grateful for and proud of you "Amico Mio"! Blaine
By the way, I love singing too, and you've really inspired me. You have a really amazing voice dude! (P.S.- You look somewhat like David Archuleta, my idol. Haha.) :D -Pheng
So glad you were so strong to defeat it. Would have been a shame to lose that smile and amazing voice and wonderful human being in general!
This breaks my heart.

: Matt, Thank you so very much for sharing your experience. Many of us can relate to various aspects. I am so happy that you did not commit suicide. The world is a much more beautiful place because of you. With love, Espen [San Diego, CA]
oh god now i'm crying aw matt i'm so glad youre still with us today
i went through a lot of the same things you went through and i realized i tried going to people who i thought would help me and didn't, i was fat and people called me horrible names but i got to a low place like you did, so i helped myself i dropped the weight and worked out and i look amazing but then i took a bad path and found the guy that made me feel so worthless and beat the crap out of him after i was suspended, i came back to school and all of my glory faded but i got better :) a lot :)
That is a wonderful strategy. I am going to implement all of those parts. Unfortuantely, reminding the students of the rules and pointing to the rules does not always work so I need to improve my tactics. Thank you for shairing a strategy that works for you.
Thank you for this video post Matt. Some young person will choose to live because of your courage in sharing your story.
Thank you - SO much. I hope you understand the effect you're having. You're a true inspiration.
And thanks.
Thanks for being brave and sharing such a humiliating experience. You've helped many kids today.
Well done!
Great vid and a great actor.......every success to you in Lincoln Centre.
Thank you for posting this message.....we need to hear this.
This popped up in my recommended videos today. Its even more relevant today than when you posted it
youre such an inspiration to me. thx so much for sharing your story and encouragement
I did not expect this to catch me so off guard, I'm trying not to cry... thank you for sharing.
Matt you're seriously incredible. This touched my heart.
I'm glad you lived to tell about it. God loves you. He loves all of us despite what we do wrong.
You are such a beautiful person. Thank you for existing.
Matt , You're totaly Wonderful !!!! I wish I knew someone like You . Life is lonely these days....

I wish i could find someone to talk to 'cause i'm in a pretty bad place right now.
I don't know if it gets better but i'm hopeless and i'm not sure if i could take it any longer...
We are ALL so glad that you found strength to overcome. Broadway would be a little dimmer if you weren't there!
Thank you so much for this video! You really are a great inspiration.
Thank you.
Love to all you gay guys at all ages. x
This was incredible thank you ❤
I tried to make her more familiar with gays, but obviously failed. But looking at you Matt I feel stronger. You are so beautiful and strong and I just wanna be like you. I'm looking forward to future. I'm sure it will get better.
Thank you
Matt-
Who knows if you will read this, but i thank you so much. :)
You are a sweet young man, Matt! Thanks for sharing, love you!

Awh I just want to give him a hug ♥

If you ever need someone to talk to or be a sounding board, get in touch with me, I'll always be here.
That was so moving. Thank you for sharing that
You're an incredible human being.
Ive watched this video six times now. just because it makes me feel good:)
Muchas gracias Matt. Saludos desde PÉRÚ
Wow the things that happen in America, this dosnt happen to much in Australia like ive never seen it happen before, but i guess bullying like this happens everywhere
@mattfdoyle
Ciao Bello!
Matteo Bello! (Matthew)
Grazie for throwing in as it were on a "Campaign" that is so dear to my heart!
Blaine
Thank you...i needed that..
my god he is like a cat, i just want to give him a big hug!
By the way, I love singing too, and you've really inspired me. You have a really amazing voice dude!
