  • Next up in our series on the bikes we ride for our kit reviews… the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT. Sporty on the inside, comfortable on the outside. Find out what we thought about it (spoiler: we thought it was bloody brilliant!)

    Nice one, Tony. Might get a test ride on one of these next year. So many good bikes to choose from!

    I've had my Tracer 9 gt since October 2021. Got the touring screen fitted as the oem one is rubbish. I'm 6ft 2" and suffered from wind buffering with the oem, new touring one fixed that. Seat is fine for me.. tad hard at 1st but it's bedding in fine now. Engine is amazing. As is the handling. My only gripe is the dash. In direct sunlight u can't see owt and the design leaves alot to be desired. Scuba mask is all I'll say!! But the pros out weigh the cons on this bike by along way.

      @Nimporte Qui3011 I did. Vast improvement over stock unit.

      If anyone is 5' 8" or less, like me, don't order the touring screen before riding at highway speeds with the standard. I have none of the buffeting reported by the taller folks. The OEM works a treat.

    I pickup my 9GT next week. The dealer sold his last in the silver color (my first preference) last week and couldn't tell me when another would be available. So I'm stuck with red it seems. Depending on who's shooting the video, the red looks anywhere from great to so, so with too much orange. Can't wait to see it in person.

    • @Shevchenkocss
      @Shevchenkocss ปีที่แล้ว

      Got it already ? I test drove the red one, that's the one i wanted, but my dealer only had the silver one 😂

      @@Shevchenkocss Got it! Soon as I put the naked eye on it, the red looked great.. I really like the bike so far. Did some serious touring on it last riding season. Wouldn't you know it, Yamaha put adaptive cruise control on the new 9GT+. That was really the only thing I feel needs added. Here in Japan, drivers have a real problem maintaining a steady speed, regardless of traffic, so I was on the adjustment knob often. It still beats a throttle lock by leaps and bounds.

    I live in the US, so my mpg us based on smaller US gallons, but even I still get 50+mpg. What I've noticed is that all UK/EU T9GTs seem to have comfort seats...the US comes with the "Dis-Comfort Seat".

    Sounds like a great bike on paper, never ridden one yet. I can't get my head around the rusty mess of an exhaust and the dash. What were they thinking?!

      Yes I couldn't look at that dash, I mean who designs these things? the exhaust looks shit too as you say. probably a great bike to ride but I just couldn't look at that stupid dash all day.

    Another strange thing (i think) about this newest generation is the shift lever pivot has been moved WAY WAY forward so much so they now have it facing backwards to the foot peg but so close to the peg it is insanely SHORT...bizarre looking and doubtless responsible for pain in my left toe region and difficulty even getting my boot under it! (I do have large but not giant feet)

    This field is getting a bit more competitive now, I guess manufacturers have worked out not everyone needs to be able to go off road on their comfy middleweight touring bikes. The NT1100 and GSX-S1000GT are coming out around the same time and offer very different takes on the same segment from this Yamaha, in my eyes the Suzuki is most bang for buck but I guess we'll see how they all compare in the real world soon!

    • @ambassadorofpain1
      @ambassadorofpain1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barely any of the boomer adventure bike owners use them off road, sports tourer's make so much more sense, but hey then they can't act high and mighty on their adventure bikes so I don't think they will buy them.

    • @Geshmaal
      @Geshmaal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ambassadorofpain1 tbf I’m under 30 and ride a V-Strom 650, not because I have pretentious of being an off road warrior but because it’s a more comfortable SV650! I have dragged it around some gravelly roads in the Scottish Highlands that I think would have been less pleasant on something like a VFR or ZZR but I have no need for anything like long travel suspension or wire wheels etc. I think a sports tourer would suit 95% of my riding and the other 5% I either choose to stick to main roads or accept the higher chance of damage to the bike/myself.

    Fuel guage (on mine) the low fuel light came on and the guage showed empty but only took 3.5 gallons to top it off meaning there was 1.7? US gallons left when it told me it was empty....WHY Yamaha? Now IF you remember to reset the gallons consumed and IF you trust it? then you can ignore the fuel light and guange and use that where 5 gallons consumed will mean "about to run on fumes" Also there is a tremendous range of gas milage depending if you are aggressively riding in mountain twisties getting 32mpg (US galons) OR obeying highway speed law continous level road maybe using cruise control to do 60ish? Might then get 60 mpg which many T9gt riders claim to get in the US....personally I dont think I have seen better than 50 someting but that is me a guy that loves to twist the throttle

    • @sportsbikeshop
      @sportsbikeshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Old-school method is to reset the trip and have an idea in your head of what sort of range you normally get, and kinda use that as your own countdown to fuelling time. But that's the kind of technique for my ancient 1992 Yam Diversion, not a 2021 bike like this. As I said, I don't understand why a bike like this wouldn't have a fuel range indicator when it monitors the required information anyway. Fingers crossed you don't have any real issues over fuel range. Thanks for getting in touch. Cheers, Tony

    I took one out for a test and my review goes like this, superb engine and gearbox especially the quick shifter, pegs too low causing aching in the groin area, seat uncomfortable after 20 minutes (far too hard), screen caused terrible buffeting between 50 to 70mph eased off @ 80mph then became unrideable over 110mph, apart from gear mph and revs you cannot see any other info on the dash as the digits are about 5mm in size, apparently I can buy as options a taller screen and a comfortable saddle, the BMW F900 xr was no better especially the extras list, so what I've done is order a Multistrada V2s tour as it comes with what you need to ride it. My frustration is why doesn't Joe public get the same "demo" bike as the writers!

    • @sportsbikeshop
      @sportsbikeshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for commenting, and it's interesting to read your take on the bike. I didn't plan to make a comprehensive road test video, but back when I did that sort of stuff it was always a bit frustrating to get a bike with choice accessories fitted, rather than a stocker. The fact this bike had an accessory screen and seat (I didn't mention the seat in the video as I didn't find it particularly worthy of comment) shows Yamaha probably knew where some enhancements were most needed. Your views definitely back up that suspicion. The size of some displays on that left screen did frustrate me (especially time of day) and being able to display them on the right screen would improve things as they could be bigger there. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, and I'll see if I can swindle some time on a Multistrada V2 (I rode one in 2017 and thought it was great). Cheers, Tony

      tracer is faster than the V2, is cheaper, it handles better on corners, it does not have the awful 19" front wheel and it does not overheat under the seat during traffic hours in summer time.

    • @davidcreighton8369
      @davidcreighton8369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheAskme32 with a standard screen you can't go fast on the tracer, it is bloody uncomfortable after 20 minutes, is cheaper because it doesn't have half the equipment of a V2 or some of the options available, it only has 2 year warranty v's 4, it only has 1 year breakdown cover again the Ducati has 4, it will depreciate at a higher rate, and if I wanted fast I would keep or update my 2019 CB1000ra neo.

    • @TheAskme32
      @TheAskme32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidcreighton8369 first of all i have 950s and tracer 9gt in my garage so i don't only speak from watching youtube. Tracer in road in speedy corners is way better. Also it is faster with better engine and better sound. In heavy traffic you burn your ass in the ducati and 950 was full of vibrations above 7000 rpm . Actually ducati needs the longer warranty because they are not so reliable as yamaha and believe me the difference in price of servicing between the two is a lot.
      But Ducati looks better of course, has a very nice dashboard, has excellent brakes, good suspension and not so good QS as tracer.

      @@TheAskme32 you won't change my opinion (especially as I've already parted with my deposit) I've test ridden both and felt at one with both the 950s and the bmw f900 xr, the 9 was a total disappointment, yes the gearbox and engine are good but that's it, at no point did I feel I wanted to ride (again) let alone own the bike, I want a bike to say to me when I see it in my garage "let's go and play" even my 1981 cb250rs has that effect on me, especially when it starts 😄😄

    What I do NOT like about this bike is: 1- The wacky exhaust flow with thoughtless exposure to the eye, 2- The one-eyed light that makes you feel the other is broken, 3- The split screen, 4- Toyota logo (in all bikes). Everything else is great (most specially the engine). Still this didn't win for me. I ended up buying BMW F 750 GS.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Tracer. Interesting how much resistance there is to the split screen (though not surprised by the objections to the exhaust design). Interested to know if you upgraded to the TFT screen on your GS. Cheers, Tony
