The new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are getting a lot of attention from tech blogs and tech TH-camrs, but I think the excitement is overhyped. Was Apple lying about how much better the new phones were during the keynote? They were oddly quiet about the new handsets and didn't hype them up with stats like they usually do. Does that mean they're really all that better? Is a $1,099+ smartphone worth it or are you better off just getting the cheaper iPhone XR?

I'm pretty happy with my iPhone X and am going to stick with it. I think the iPhone XR will ultimately be the device with far more legacy than either the XS or XS Max. They also have terrible names. The whole lot of them.

I buy phones every five years or so. We’ve been duped into thinking we need to switch to the newest phone every year. It’s insane. What a waste of money and a massive cancer on the environment. Hardly anything changes from year to year. You need about 2-3 years to see any worthwhile change and about 5-6 for your old phone to actually feel old.
It used to be that people would buy electronics and keep them same model until it broke. What happened? When did we become so naive to think it’s weird not to switch to the new model every year?
Agree. I have a Galaxy S3, and I will upgrade to a Galaxy S10 (or whatever) next year. That's a 7 years leap of technology, and I still have no problem with the S3. Maybe I will slap a new OS on this guy if it will start to slow down, and it's as good as a current phone.
I have my iPhone 5s and I have no plans on getting a new phone. It constantly needs to be in battery saving mode and it does feel a bit sluggish, but the size is perfect. I will never buy a phone that is larger.
iOS 12 will make it faster, also look in to getting the battery replaced, are they still doing it for $29?

Agreed, I'm still using a Note 3, five years after I purchased it, and it's still powering along. Why people are willing to pay >$1000/£1000 for a phone, which will be "old" in a year's time is beyond me.

As much as I hate sounding like a Jobs fanboy, Apple has shifted its focus from making great and exciting computing products for human beings to creating a cult and havest high profit margins. There's barely any innovation from Apple since finger print sensors.

Kymie If someone is coming from a 6 or 7, the XR is a PERFECT upgrade for those people who WANT the X feel without spending a lot of money on it. The XR has a better display than both the 4,5,6, and 7. You also get wireless charging and Face ID. And they already paid $500 plus for their past phone, so paying 200 extra for those new features makes sense. The XR is for THAT market.

I have seen his broken iMac Pro, and thought he was a glutton for punishment, and should have learned to leave well enough alone. Then again at $5K it should come with a Vesa attachment. Then I watched this video. I liked it. He does seem to keep you interested in the topic.
Same. I've never owned an apple product, nor am I that interestet ind them. But his videos are just well put together, great story telling etc.. First video I watched of his were the Vesa mount for the Imac Pro. So interesting, how the consumer experience vary from brand to brand.

It's most likely the most color accurate and probably the brightest and best contrast LCD you can get. Resolution isn't all. If you want a better display, look at the Xs or other phones altogether.
ThinkCleverAndSmart hmm. Even if that is true, witch i can't denie or confirm, LCD is a screen type not just a phone screen. That means that i think there are a LOT better LCD tv's, monitors or whatever out there. Im almost 100% sure that "the most advanced lcd" is a lie. Why would you use "the most advanced lcd" if you can just put an oled on there for less the price. Because "advanced" lcd's aren't cheap.

They’re literally advertising an LCD. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. This has been out a decade+. This year was super sketch, literally no improvements aside from adding a new size, and processor

@Hans Fischer they clearly don't care that much about that since they have a new marketing term, "super retina display" with a much higher ppi. It's all just marketing garbage. Samsung does a similar, annoying tactic, but it makes sense for them since their phones have the best screens in any phone
Apple have some of the highest end displays in every market they're in (mobile, tablet, notebook etc), and their resolution choices are incredibly smart for both display usability and GPU usage.
I'm not talking down their displays.
'Retina' was (and still is) a very clever and effective /marketing strategy/, but it's nothing more than patented marketing terminology.
WHY would you ever buy a new iphone EVERY year? What is so much better about the new one? How can you justify the cost? I keep my phones until they break, and I hope a lot of other people do so as well.
I just "upgraded" from a LG Android to the iPhone SE. Even though the design is nearing 3 years of age--I fully expect it to last me 6 years. All it needs is new batteries and a occasional factory reset.

Until apple starts releasing “updates for downgrades” on its older phones and now there’s an incentive to buy the new latest Apple product. They did it in the past and they can do it again.
I’m an iPhone 6+ user here. I wouldn’t wanna get another iPhone starting from 7. I still rather have the classic headphone jack.
If the newer iPhones, at least one of their variants, put back the classic headphones feature, then I’ll have no problem.

Added: Fast chargers should be standard now. Dongles should be included. IOS should allow app-level locking, and locked landscape mode for video (currently only locked portrait or automode).

What's good in Apple watch? EKG? That's a gimmick. If you can't analyze it on fly - what's the point? Try to walk with Apple watch in NY for 4-5 on streets, roaming around. It will go out of power. Apple can't even make a watch with 1 day battery usage. (No calls or fancy stuff used on Watch 3)

Really enjoyed this vid... until you said the 'r' is a killer deal. It's just crazy we live in a world where apple sells their iPhones for double or triple the price of the original iPhone and we are Okish with it. I too am disappointed the SE is gone. But I think the reason there was nothing exciting to announce is because they have nothing new to announce. There is no innovation at apple anymore. Just repackaging of the same product. They honestly don't even try at producing good design anymore. How can they even dare the X is good for watching movies with that ridiculous notch/bar on the side? It's beyond disappointing what they used to be and what they have become now.

Here in Australia our phones have been >$1000 for the past few years and hearing that a phone is 250 cheaper for a hell of a downgrade as a killer deal is ridiculous.

The 120hz touch input is a really good point. It was on the X last year but they mentioned it this year to make it seem like there's a other feature for this year's upgrade.

XR? Is not competitively priced for the masses. $750! The screen res is way too low (not even 1080p). It's got a dated slow lightning cable, why not USB C? And again with the limited storage options.

then they invented firewire, then thunderbolt and lightning.

@@mm-hl7gh last year's models can handle high speed charging but its convoluted. You need a usb c charger, a quality and hard to find usb c to lightning cable.
That's just to get on par with the rest of the android world.
I agree, personally I think the Poco F1 is better in everything except camera, processor (still SD845) and the build... And it's $300. And if u want good build, comparable camera and great software OnePlus 6 or 6t when it comes, they are around $500.
Flip Alips Well the iPhone should have a better IPS rating, Stronger Glass, much better display, Better camera, Apple Pay, better cpu+gpu, wireless charging, more premium feel, better speakers, no chin, more secure, not to mention who knows how private or secure a Chinese phone is and Google tracking android phones 50X more than iOS users on top of that🤣
But in its favor poco phone is a lot better priced, has more ram but it’s debatable what iOS 12 with 4 GB of ram with optimizations can do, type c connector, finger print sensor and possibly better battery.
It’s preference really, budget and android vs iOS.

I don't know what these people are doing with their phones but I've had my iPhone 5s since launch, and it's been great up until a while ago. However the battery goes down from 100%-80% in like 10 minutes. Also it's crashing a crap ton now, it might be time to part ways. Now for me an iPhone Xs is one hell of an upgrade hell even the iPhone 8 but to the people with iPhone X you must be crazy to upgrade to a Xs or X Max
Ao Mb----Upgrading an iPhone every year is not at all expensive. There is a concept called total cost of ownership. The actual cost is the price of the new iPhone minus what ones gets for the 1 year old phone. There is a strong market for 1 year old iPhones, so it's simple to do. I actually make money on some upgrades by buying the iPhone in the US and selling it in South America where higher import duties cause the iPhones to cost more. Capisce?
I upgrade like every 3rd year, so I will get the Xs. Dont know why people rage about it. Almost every S is just a upgrade from the first version.
Almost two decades ago I had a boss who also had art placed at galleries and museums. One thing I took away after so many years is him saying to have an item or two that were very expensive even if they didn’t sell. It would help sell other items and at the very least give the perception of quality. It is really marketing 101 and people fall for it all the time.
In Apple’s case, the pricing is purposely staggered so it works both ways. For people who want to “save” money / get a “better” deal by comparing to the XS models and for people with disposable money who feel it is “just” a couple hundred more or a few bucks per month more.
As a long time Apple user people were shocked I switched to Samsung S8+ even when I was (and made my whole family) fully into the Apple ecosystem. (iPhone 6S Plus, 10.5” iPad Pro, MBP, Apple Watch 2, iCloud, and heavy apps user) but I couldn’t bring myself pay retail for an iPhone 7 Plus which was essentially a bump upgrade from 6s plus.
I have a friend who asked me for advice because her old android phone broke down. My first instinct was recommending buying an iPhone because she had an iPad Pro (because of me) but looking at the prices and offers, trade-in plus gift coupon it was just crazy to get an iPhone 8 Plus for doble the price of a Samsung 8+ gorgeous screen.
For most people it doesn’t make financial sense to get iphones and pay 30% or more. Even design wise Samsung is on-par. And to say that iPhone XR with a resolution that definitely does not belong to a flagship phone in 2018 is gonna be a game changer really blows my mind.
Dumb people 101 for sure. Tell them what they want and for how much, rather than let them come to their own conclusions about what value is and what to expect for a certain price point.

I'm a lot like what you described. I've been a loyal Apple fan and user since before the iPod, and am heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook Air, iMac). But with the iPhones, I've been less and less excited since my 7+. And couldn't really get into the X. As much as I've loved Apple, my friends always thought I was blinded by love for Apple and Steve Jobs, but I always told them I'm a fan because their products (and service) are great, but that if that ever changed, I wouldn't stick around just because it's Apple. I fee like mostly the products, but even the service, aren't what they used to be. Especially now that the competition has caught up so much compared to the first generations of Andriod. So been thinking of just sticking with my 7+ vs giving Android a try cuz I just can't see $1200 reasons to buy the XsMax 256 which I pre-ordered but will likely return.
So I'm wondering from someone who was also very Apple ecosystem invested, how has the switch been? I'm sure some compromises for some benefits, but overall are you happy you made the switch? Especially when it comes to still having a Mac and iPad? I've been seriously thinking of getting a Samsung Note 9 (have found deals for the 128GB for as low as $750). Love the stylus (can't believe we still can't use our Apple pencil with the iPhone plus!) and I just can't seem to get over the notch, so love that the Note 9 doesn't have one. Also been curious to wait for the OnePlus 6t and Pixel 3 to be released. Any advice?

Seperate display, you buy a box for 150 dollars, then the phone for 1300 dollars, then the display for 300 dollars, additional 8 screws to build it for 100 dollars, a screwdriver for 300 dollars and the box only contains a 2W charger without a cable

Apple stated last year that the iPhone X was not going to be manufactured for very long which is why so many bought it when they did. It’s nothing to do with sales or anything. 10 anniversary was just that

Apple basically reinvented the smartphone when they launched the original iPhone since then pretty much every other smartphone uses the same form factor and design so unless someone reinvents the phone again then you aren't going to have that same excitement.

Also, more importantly, it push the iPhone price to a new level. It is supposed to be the cheaper version, and it is even 50 dollar higher than 8’s launch price, 100 dollar higher than the 7 launch price. Storage upgrade also got more expensive despite the flash cost less. This was suppose to be the year where Apple push its new design to the mass, instead it is the year Apple completely psuh iPhone to be a luxury item.

I appreciate it when Apple users like yourself speak out on issues like this. There is really no reason to upgrade if you have an X already. Unless you're upgrading from an iPhone 7 or below, if you're going to fork off another grand for a processor that's 15% faster, I question your life decisions. Apple used to be able to justify their prices by being the innovative powerhouse of the tech industry, but other companies have caught up and are now beating Apple at their own game at a lower price point. Look at the OnePlus phones for example. This company has resorted itself to nothing but a status symbol.

I just ordered my Xs Max and I‘m upgrading from an iPhone X. I know its kinda stupid but my hands are not small and I prefer a big Phone. Imo Apples new phones are way too overpriced and the xs max should cost like 899 not 1099 and the xs 799 and the xr 699. Even tho these Priced would be enough too.

I never understand why people need to buy a new phone every year. I had a mobile phone for 7 years till it finally broke, only had to replace a battery. Buy a new one when it is needed not because you think you always need to have the new ones. We live in a disposable world nowadays.

I could easily say it would last me another year or two, but I bought a new phone. I still own that Galaxy Note 2 to this day and is still working no problem, but it understandably slow, but I can fix it with new lightweight ROM

I honestly don't think it's merely Tim Cook; basically, he's still the operations guy. A lot of what we see here is the influence of Jony Ive and the enduring legacy of Steve Jobs. Apple is still Jobs' company in spirit, and many choices they're making are based on the "what would Steve have done?" mantra. However, Steve's been gone for years, so now they're assuming they know themselves. People tend to forget that Jobs had his share of duds too, so it's not certain he would have done much better. The biggest problem, in my view, is Apple's evolution from a 'high-quality experience for everyone' company to a luxury brand, and I perceive Ive as the main culprit of this trend. That would not be such a problem if Ive, and by extension Apple, hadn't been so creatively stale simultaneously. Innovation has been incremental at best, especially on the design front. And ergonomics appear to have been thrown out entirely. I'm sure their products will continue to sell, but not to me, alas. The only thing tying me to the Mac is the superior quality of software by third parties, but my broken iPhone 7 is now being replaced by a Blackberry (physical keyboard... yum).

I miss the keynotes led by Steve Jobs. I remember thinking the iPad was a really stupid device, then I watched the keynote almost 7 months later, and I finished _needing_ the iPad. Steve Jobs had that way of making Apple devices feel like a necessity. This last keynote was underwhelming. I noticed much less live previews or demos, most were pre-recorded which is kind of shady. I'm still happy with my 7 Plus.

I have owned IPhones since IPhone 4 currently I have an IPhone 7 Plus. Where Apple is going is downhill! Bad naming. IPhone XR is same resolution as IPhone 4 and it’s over $700. I had really wanted the Max but it’s more almost as much as my house payment! I just can’t justify that for a phone. I also don’t really see any great improvements. So although everything I own is Apple I’m going to go Android does more than Apple already has the great display costs less and worth the try. Very disappointed in Apple they don’t even tell you how long the battery lasts also I miss the headphone jack!

Apple is making its money almost mysteriously it seems. However apples decisions on their designs and price tag on their latest devices are rather off putting and not exactly what most consumers want. I love having a headphone jack and the ability to use apps from the App Store that apples new firmware rids the possibility of using those same apps because of new restrictions. Apples focus now is profits over innovation which I believe Jobs at some point would have stopped the steady escalation of these prices. Not to mention Apple is pushing their services hard for both music and tv/movie streaming on the latest firmware. Apple is a brand giant that Is gonna make money regardless true but a lot of people who genuinely valued its innovations and convenience are being pushed aside. I hope their profit margins do begin to slip because the iPhone SE is clear indication what Apple users want and demands for that phone was way higher than Apple anticipated and cancelling the SE 2 was a big mistake.
I bought a new SE last August. I love having the headphone jack. It's a rock solid iPhone, IMO. Sure, it's small, but I like to carry in my hip pocket. Touch ID works great on it. I am disappointed Apple killed off their smaller budget model. I was hoping for a successor to the SE.

I thinks the Xr was $100 off that perfect iPhone, as a 7 Plus user who doesn’t want to pay $1,000 for the X and neither for the Xs this leves me in a weird position buy a Xr (all X features, but a slightly worse display, thicker) or buy the 8 Plus instead (much faster than the 7, wireless charging) and it is on the sweet spot price of the ‘perfect iPhone’ rather than the Xr, and to be fair the 7 Plus with iOS 12 is equally as fast if not faster than it was on iOS 10 so its a pretty tough decision. I think the 8 Plus gives me more than the Xr but that upgrade isn’t necessary thanks to iOS 12, so Apple is giving me this awkward position.

i had the opposite experience. Got the s8 when it came out and a year later I folded it over my knee. It sucked ass, slow as hell, froze CONSTANTLY, screen would turn on in you pocket and pause your media, change volume skip tracks. It was so slow at times that i would put in my pin and it would take so long to unlock that the screen would time out and turn off before the phone unlocked. All around just frustrating.

Android phones are not released on the same schedule as the OS. That is the problem. Brand new phones that run like ahit and the only thing saving them is the crap ton of ram. Even the new Google pixel 3 brand new out of the box is slower than an iPhone 6. Android sucks when it comes to heavy daily use. Its a bad OS all around. The benefits of the customization don't even come close to the drawbacks of the poor memory management alone.

Stefan Brattlöf never said I liked the iPhone my man. I was on Windows phone until the OS died. I went to Android as it seemed like the next best thing. I preordered the s8 on the day they announced it. Was genuinely excited for it. If Microsoft decides to resurrect the Windows phone I'll go right back. Only reason Android is compared with the iPhone is because that's the competition, and its a competition that Android loses every time when it comes to performance and optimization. That conclusion doesn't require critical thinking or opinions, its just fact. I'm not a fan of iPhone, I'm a user. I hate the new iPhones, I'll be sticking with the 8 until they have fingerprint scanners again. Good thing is that the iPhone 8 will still perform just as good as any Android flagship for the next few years.

Keep your phone for at least 3 years, then upgrade and you will be more impressed. Imagine if you were apple and had to make a better phone that’s more powerful every single year. That puts a lot of pressure on them like how can the technology be super innovative in only one year? It takes time to develop new technologies and do you ever wonder what is the breaking point? How more Hd can the screens get and how much more powerful can they get to the point where it doesn’t even matter
From like a couple hundred post I have deduced the following. Existing customers aren't angry about the lack of innovation. It's the lack of innovation that doesn't justify the new prices brackets. People have gotten used to there IOS apps, they understand that Apple forces upgrades, but at least the product is an upgrade. Now they are stuck with all these apps on a new price range they can't afford on a phone that is exactly the same as last years.

It's funny, since you claim Apple can't innovate every year, when literally every Android phone maker is upgrading their phones annually, in multiple aspects. Some companies go so far as to do innovate every 6 months (case in point being the OnePlus 6 and 6T).
Your point could be valid if Apple released slightly minor upgrades and didn't charge nearly 2000 dollars for it (in some markets)

I'm happy with my Samsung phone, probably won't upgrade for the next 2-3 years. Whether you like apple or another brand or just the specs ...I don't see a reason to buy a new phone every year other than a broken phone or (most likely) status

Yes, for the first time ever, Apple didn’t target those who bought their latest phones from previous year. No one will buy a IPhone Xs if they have a iPhone X. People knows that, Apple definitely knows that.

Yet here I am, an iPhone X user who has already pre-ordered the XS Max (hate that name too, what was wrong with Plus?) - and I suspect I'm not the only one to have done so. (I really went for the larger screen size, which I've missed since I went from the 7 Plus to the X.)
At first I was about to start thinking about switching back to the iPhone after a couple of years with the galaxy. Today's announcement was not what I hoped for. I expected a lot more from Apple and I agree...they talked about things they already have in the X. I was more excited about iOS 12 and how it will upgrade my iPad Pro than the phones. Apple is just not advancing as much as I would like. The "WOW" factor is just not there anymore. Samsung's Note 9 announcement was more exciting and probably their foldable phone announcement will be more exciting. I love Apple products, but I no longer listen to or believe the hype anymore when it comes to innovation in the cellular realm.
People just want there to be hype and they just force it on Apple even when it’s not there. Just get a nice iPhone and be content with it for 3 or 4 years, and then get a new one which will surely knock the socks off your old one. Not mind blowing, hype spasm inducing innovation, but it’s something that you can allow yourself to be impressed by without getting caught in consumerism disguised as (fake) hype. I’m happy with my SE, but I don’t mind if other people prefer an Xs.

I love my 6s Plus. I want the Xr but my 6s Plus has much better resolution (1080P) and I still really prefer Touch ID to Face ID. Maybe buy an 8 Plus?🤔 but my trusty 6s will serve me for now. And the Xr DOES NOT have 3D Touch which I use ALL THE TIME. WHY? WHY?!!

Anybody walking in to my shop will not be advised to get an iPhone Xs and kicked out if they want the iPhone Xr. iOS is the only thing that iPhone users are being held by. The hardware is not worth the money! Either keep your current iPhones (which will prob run iOS12 anyway) or consider the swap to Android, which is just as good in performance and reliability now in Android Oreo than ever. Plus it’s cheaper ;-)
Danny Cliff Yup. iOS is the ONLY thing that keeps me using iPhones. However even iOS is losing its lead. Won’t be much longer before we all give up on Apple. They need a major breakthrough in the next few years or it’s game over.

I think you're ignoring the fact that these are S models, not a number update. So all the upgrades and new features aren't as big or as packed as say, the difference between the 6 and the 7
I’m a guy that was stuck on the smaller size and claimed it was the best size, but when I tried using the Plus after many years, I realized I was wrong.
I was using the 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and then 7 Plus. When I got the iPhone X and found no landscape mode, I was very upset.
I’m literally upgrading to the new phone because I’ve been waiting for the Plus size. AND, I have the upgrade program, so I might as well anyway.
I think with the Xs models they should definitely include a fast charger the box.
With this price tag they should've honestly included it in all of them, not to mention they don't include the dongle anymore

I have said it before and i will say it again. I have had iPhone for years. the 4S was probably one of the greatest phones ever. but Apple dropped the ball after 6. Decided to move to Samsung Note. granted i wanted to return it the first few days because the transition was very hard, but now i do not want any else. especially after i made a cinematic video (available on my channel) with the Camera of the Note. the dynamic range, the contrast, and sharpness are just pure madness! those who are considering moving Samsung, just go for it!
Sam Wasi I had a Note 3 and jumped ship to iPhone 5s. Never looked back lol. I think I was just unlucky with my note because it was horribly slow after a few months. I was still using the 5s until last year when I got an SE.
Agreed dude. I went from a long time Apple fan boy to the Galaxy S8+ last year. Needless to say, I will never go back to iPhone. The Gear VR and AKG earbuds as were also worth the preorder.
The 6s (and the SE based on it) were the last really good iPhones in my opinion.
I had an iphone 7 and I hated it so much I returned it and got a Samsung 8. I thought thhe OS was retarded. t was sluggish, and I couldnt understand the copy/paste on it. It just wasnt very intuitive. Sooooo I went back to Verizon and got my money back on the Samsung8 nd started up my iphone 6. I still have it. I have an LG that I use to fly my drone with. Id never use it as a phone tho.
I loved the iphone 4. Even though i never owned an iphone, it was nice to see all the great upgrades in the early years. Now it seems to be just gradual "upgrades" for more money.

Hey, Quinn. Your video is definitely a one off, for this recent update. I will say that I was definitely a bit taken back myself by the Key Note. Something did feel way off, about this latest one. Apple is having so many leaks before it’s announced. It kinda dampers the key note. Also, smartphones r getting relatively more advanced, but commercial value is fallen due to nothing revolutionary happening.
The best spec to me is the chip. CPU, and GPU. The size is smaller, at 7 nanometer. You can pack more transistors in a smaller space. The smaller size helps battery life. The XS offers a 50% more efficient battery life than the X. Slightly faster CPU. A moderately faster GPU. I have the iPhone 6s for 3 yrs, I’m upgrading. Lol
I also have an iPhone 6S. I won't be upgrading any time soon. I have no issues with the older phone. Wait, I would have liked the 128GB version. LOL
I’m on an iPhone 6 and was planning to finally upgrade this year, but the keynote underwhelmed me. I replaced my battery lately and updated to iOS 12 and honestly, this phone runs quite snappy and smoothly. iPhone 6 for another year! Can you believe it? They can’t seem to convince me to get the newest phone. That’s not a good sign. Perhaps next year they’ll impress.
