It’s a security feature so people can’t just access your phone while it’s locked. Go into settings->face id and passcode and toggle USB accessories on. It will now charge while the phone is locked.

This is what apple says to me “Ah, ok! If it does charge when the screen is awake vs. when it’s in sleep mode, then that indicates normal behavior.” Plugging in my iPhone and getting no response is NOT normal behavior.

shahir Pretty good, it holds up a whole lot better than my 7 plus did right before I switched. I don't know exactly how long it lasts, I think the best way to explain is one day I used it all pretty much day without charging and it only got down to about 8% by like 1 AM.

OML I’m so happy he did a video on this. I’ve had this problem with my iPhone AND iPad. I thought it was just a charger problem, so.. I spent SO much money on chargers. Later on, my friend complained about the same problem. So I knew I wasn’t the only one
My friend had a similar issue with his Xs Max. What he observed was that it WILL charge even if it is idle when the battery is critically low. Otherwise, it won't start charging until you wake the phone up. I observed something similar happening with the phones featured in this video.
Apple gonna release a $50 dongle to fix this.

My ipad doesn’t charge either when the device is locked and sometimes doesn’t charge even if its awake...
Faced the same problem and suffered in the same scenario! These do happen when one does plug his phone to charge,at the silent mode,pushing that left side’s toggle down! But at the end of the day,they all get charged!
Next year Apple will remove the charging function, you will have to buy a new iPhone once your battery dies

Go to settings> Face ID and passcode; and then scroll down until you see something that says “USB accessories” and make sure that’s on, if it’s on it will charge when if doesn’t recognize your face, or when it’s locked after one hour. Don’t blame Apple, it’s a security feature so people can’t restore your device without immediate access. Hope this solved your problems.
Yup I thought I was crazy. Woke up the other day my phone was almost dead. In the car with an Apple cord, had to flip it to charge (brand new from Apple store) I’ve been paying attention as of recently because of this. I updated my 10s max to 13 whatever in the hope it would fix it, which it has not. But it is strange one cord I have to flip and another works regardless of direction? Probably the strangest issues I’ve ever had with iPhone other than batteries being crap and getting replaced. Been in the iPhone since 3GS. Apple has always been great about replacement of anything I’ve ever had an issue with. Guess we’ll see! Thanks for the video, very well made

Seems like a lot of people fixed the issue with a setting. Under Face ID & Password, by default It has USB accessories ticked off not allowing it while its locked. Just like awhile back when Apple had Wifi Assist on by default and it drove up everyone's data. Try this and see if it works!

People should understand iPhone XS Max is a big device! Apple INVENTED Individual App usage restrictions to save your life. When you use your phone for an Extended period of time and TRY TO CHARGE IT it will refuse to charge! It is an Expected behaviour of new iOS 12. You should do your research before bashing APPLE! This happens sometimes to my ipad air 2, and my sister's 6th gen, but i realize that it charges but the screen doesn't light up to indicate that it's charging. When i do wake them up they are charging and the notif/indication does light up!

My XR on Dev Beta 13.4 sometimes has the same problem, but only with one charging stand. It’s probably the stand but worth noting.
I actually have a similar issue with both my iPads and my iPhone but it’s a 6 plus 🙃 sometimes I connect my devices to the charger then a while later I look at my device and notice it didn’t even recognise the capable inserted. This happens with the official apple cable and a 3rd party

A year later and my phone still does this randomly sometimes and i have the newest updates on the phone
