Container Garden in Bear Country | Learning to Grow Food in Alaska

  • We've got strawberries! And grizzly bears.
By the time we posted this video, 2 grizzly bears have been harvested by hunters and at least 3 others have been seen. They were all anywhere from 1 mile to 10 miles from the cabins.
Bears are 100% something we expected and planned for. It's very cool of everyone in the area to keep others updated when they see one. Honestly, we are excited to catch our first grizzly bear sighting. We're just not eager for it to happen without our bear defense guns in reach or by surprise in any way!
With our heads on a swivel, we've been gardening and making progress with it all! The garden is really starting to pop, except for the pepper plant. Sad, sad pepper plant. We should definitely get a few strawberries out of the garden and it would appear at least potatoes and carrots!
This is by no means our long-term plan for gardening. Since we arrived in Alaska around Memorial Day Weekend, we had a very late start and did not have the time to get a whole 1/4 acre garden going right away.
This little garden is giving me a chance to learn and try new things before Levi and I have our own property and kids to feed as well! I am very hopeful to find some property soon so that next year we can dive into a much bigger garden plan.
As always, thanks for watching, and stay tuned for more adventures in Alaska!

You got there late in the year for planting, but what you are doing is gaining knowledge for the future plantings. Starting small is the best way to start. I live in NW Florida, 81 years old and do my best to plant a raised bed garden of carrots, peppers, cucumbers, I did two squash plants, but here in the south; squash bores come early. I got about 5 squash and then had to pull the plants. I'll plant earlier next year and I did hear that water and dawn dish washing detergent injected into the stem of the plant works to stop the squash borers. I'll try that. Meanwhile, I just found your VLOG, and subscribed so looking forward to more videos. I also follow two other families in Alaska that are also off the grid.

    Potato sprouts go on top

Point the sprout up. When the plant gets about6” tall, put straw or dirt further up the plant. This is called “hilling it” and will give more potatoes.

Is old tires good for doing potatoes when they grow taller keep stacking the tires?

@@jennifercollins3171 never tried them. Do be sure to fill those tires with dirt, straw, etc.

Nice to see you are figuring some things out. You should be getting some insulated skirting around your camper if you're going to be staying in over the winter.

I've always enjoyed growing tomatoes, wherever I've lived (California, Oregon, and now Idaho) but I have to admit that if I broke down the money I've spent on growing tomatoes, versus if I'd just bought the same amount of tomatoes from a store, each of my tomatoes probably cost me five bucks. 🙂But still having fun!
P.S. Oh, and we have two Anaheim chile pepper plants. We've got three peppers growing between the two plants.

I love that! I am hoping to have a greenhouse up pretty quickly after we buy property to grow some tomatoes and peppers in. My pepper plant is very sad but we just haven't had enough heat for it and everything is drowning in the rain.

Maybe get another container ready to put the strawberry shoots in it. Make for a bigger area to expand your strawberries for next season. I think your pepper plant will produce for you. I cut the top 3-5 leaves off mine and it does make them bush out more. Can’t wait for the next video, have a safe and happy week!

Your doing good with your container garden. You should get another container like your strawberry one & do lettuce, kale or spinach 😊

What part of Alaska you move to? I've been wanting to take the leap. I did try i pd for a rental sight unseen come to find out after i sent money to a scammeri guess cause i couldn't get hold of her after i sent the money. I really tried to avoid being scammed everything seemed on the up and up. Now i won't do anything til i come in person. Did you go threw realtor? If so can you please share with me who u went threw to buy your place. I know finding anything is really hard they isn't many to choose from.

That's so sad that someone is willing to scam like that! My in-laws own the property that we are currently staying on but the realtor that helped them is slowing down his business. We are currently just looking on realtor.com for a place to buy but I'm not sure about for renting. In our area, I know there is a business in town rentinthevalley.com that may be able to help you! We have seen their sign but don't know much more about them since we are looking to buy further out of town. Good luck in the search! It is an amazing place to live.
