I like it how they protrayed the Filipinos and mexicans, it's true, we have unwavering determination and a fighting spirit in all of us no matter how weak you are.
For sure! The fighting spirit is truly present in them :)
don't lump Mexican and Filipinos
I hate pinoy pride
@@platoonier mexican and filipino boxers are the rivals irl too. At least for pacquiao that's the case that's why he was nicknamed the mexicutioner
Tbf having filipinos as notorious in ippo is a compliment
True brother 🤝
Or maybe morikawa just hates my kind 😭
Don’t say that 😂 it sure as hell looks like it sometimes. But they always get good stories and a solid fighting spirit. Especially Randy Boy Jr.
Gedo was also such an underrated opponent man.
Greetings to the Philippines my brother🇵🇭🤝

I agree with you bro. Yeah he gave some Mexicans an honorable depiction but I feel like with Filipinos he makes us seem like scum
As a Filipino im proud that boxer from Philippines like manny pacquiao is mentioned 😊
Of course bro. The man is a legend.
Cringe. Lagi na lang.
I enjoy seeing Fil. Boxers acknowledge in Manga of Morikawa sensei. It takes the reality of Filipino Boxers who have lacking of financial support, not enough equipments to train but Trains so hard for the bucks. Even if they got dominated by their opponent or getting screwed in scoreboards they kept rising again. In past decade we saw the rise of Philippine champions but today we're having a difficult time in producing and maintaining one. Fil Boxing fans this should be a wake up call to us to improve.
Beautifully said brother. I love the mentality in the Philippines. But there are still two world champions in the minimum weight classes. Melvin Jerusalem and Pedro Taduran. But you’re right, there are less than there used to be.
I think they need another high status hero who brings back the motivation for everybody. Manny was a pole star for the whole nation man.
If you're Japanese and reading this, I thank you for your recognition. Mabuhay Nippon! Go Japan and Philippines.
Mabuhay brother🤝
Correction, Pacman wasn't able to join the Philippine Team. He went to Pro immediately because that's where the money comes from. But it was really his dream he even tried out but the Philippine team chose different fighters.
Nah he made the national team.
Pacman literally has amateur career and his record is 60-4

Morikiwa just wants to tell filipinos on how much he loves seeing japanese boxers sends our kind to the floor especially right now
Nah that’s too cold bro. I think he respects Filipinos. Especially because they’re crazy strong boxers. What about Guevara? He was literally Ippo’s last opponent and third loss.
@@KingKoohii He does, but What Op is saying isnt really wrong thou, japan currently dominates us. Thou i thnk there will also be a some sort of a "switch". Boxing for the longest time was our favorite combat sport but with the rise of one championship, muay thai i think the boxing renaissance in the philippines is over. What i mean by that is ever since pacquiao retired professionally it hasn't been the same. I think We will eventually get good in other combat sports while boxing will get a decline.. We will still produce champions here in there but MMA is definetly a rising sport here and you know what they say when a door closes another door opens.

@@jmgonzales7701 so the mangaka hates filipino boxers or something?
As a Filipino, I appreciate the representation.
This is a story of a Japanese, in the perspective of a Japanese protagonist. Morikawa could've just write off any race as "just another wall to hurdle" or a "villain of the week"kind of characters in a Shonen Manga, but he took the effort to give them enough depth for the story.
Well said brother. That’s true. He gave the Filipino boxers so much depth and character. Even Gedo, who should be the villain type, is actually likable.
Seeing Filipino as a threat or as a Powerhouse in boxing is already a compliment.
Specially when Filipinos and Mexicans fight each other, as if its a Brotherly Rivalry.
Proud Filipino here brother❤❤❤❤
Mabuhay my brother! 🤝🇵🇭
I mean it just makes sense and adds to the realism. I find it cool to see all the boxers coming from a buncha different SEA countries. I wanna see more European block boxers personally. Especially as Takamura moves up in weight as light heavyweight has so many russian and ukranian boxers. It'd be cool to see Takamura fight some non American boxers.
I’d love to see a Russian as well in there. Possibly based on Dmitry Bivol. He’s a light heavyweight. Takamura will inevitably reach that weight class soon.
Bivol becomes wolf?🐺
I don't know if it's true but I heard rumors that the Philippines's crime rate whenever Pacquiao has a fight which is fucking crazy
Bro is single-handedly controlling justice 😂
When Pacquiao was fighting there were cease-fires between the Filipino Armed Forces and the Abu Sayyaf Islamic insurgent group 😭
Crime rates drop almost to 0% and traffic just disappears

@@jeffreygibson8990 that’s the funniest shi ever. I always see that meme about Mexicans loving dbz 😂
I definitely asked this same question while reading the series
Morikawa delivering the facts as they are 🤝 such a cool detail.
mexicans and pinoys are connected. we are colonized by spain for about 300 yrs so its no wonder we have similarities
🤝🗡️
Filipinos and Mexicans truly are distant cousins. 🥊
Truly warrior nations 🤝
When those two nations are mentioned I instantly think Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquaio
There is one historical element the two countries share - Spanish Colonization.
Mexico is also pretty much literally the middle way between PH and ES.
@@johnangelotenorio Whats hilarious is some Filipinos have said Juan Manuel Marquez (Mexican) looks Filipino and some Mexicans I know said Manny Pacquiao (Filipino) looks Mexican. And casuals of boxing when Ive showed them together say they look similar
The Philippines had a direct and consistent galleon trade route with Mexico. The spanish rulers of the Philippines were also based in mexico.
I loved Malcom’s character, it was a nice surprise to see a Talented boxer who legit didn’t care if he won or lost so long as he got paid. At the same time he still had pride, he wasn’t just a con man, but a legit threat. Plus the author always finds a way to write entertaining characters even just as one off opponents.
Same man!
Boxing I think is a big part of the Philippines with a big part being Pacquiao's career. I'm raised in the US, but I often remember going to huge parties where my family and many others would watch Pacquiao's fights, especially when we traveled back to the islands to meet family. I didn't understand it at the time, but this would also make me start boxing last year. I think HNI is simply putting out or maybe showing how boxing is a big part of the Philippines with how many fighters there are in the series.
For sure!
It's was Morikawa's nodd to the boxing scene and love of the sport. Real boxing back then and still now, have tons of amazing Filipino fighters but not many of them had the spotlight on them.
Even before Manny Pacquiao, boxing is already a huge deal in the Philippines. Every major boxing match will always be followed. When I was young, we also followed Mike Tyson's matches as well, and it was telecasted and there were lots of commercials. And anyone older could recall Thrilla in Manila! This is why we have a mall named Ali Mall. Filipinos love boxing.
That’s interesting af. I would have loved to be there for Thrilla in Manila bro. Wild times.
if you ever visit tondo you will know why there's a lot of filipino boxers
Tondo is wild
filipino here, i remember as a kid whenever Manny as a fight, the whole country literally stops. like, zero crime rate type of shit. if you go outside during a manny pacquiao match, the streets are so deserted like you would mistake it for a ghost town.
I would have loved to see that man
Funnily enough, joji showed the Filipinos good but a bit misinterpreted the Indonesians,we're not really just some simple tropic dudes with lacking technologies, but Woli really showed that batak vibes
Nice insight. I appreciate it. So maybe Wolli is a rare case because he lives far off from the general Indonesian population?
@@KingKoohii I'd say he's either so gifted and pretty wild since he lives in those untouched tribes, like the inside baduy's,the batak etc.
@@KingKoohii and he also gave dayak and bajau vibes, he's definitely some from some indigenous tribes,I suspect papaya might be from Papua.
@@TheNeorch very interesting man. I like background knowledge like that 🤝
Tbh I thought Wally was Javanese since it wasn’t mentioned which island he came from 😭
Ippo fights South East Asian because he is on Featherweight
and Takamura is on heavier weight division
Nonito Donaire is also a modern Filipino great. He is an action packed figher with world title wins. His wife even is involved in his training camp
Idk about you, but whenever Morikawa introduced Filipino boxers in Hajime no Ippo, I feel like they're all southpaws (prob cuz of Pacquiao ig)
That’d be wild. Good eye for detail man.
i just remember what my neighbor had told us before that he used to be a pro boxer and he also said that he remembered that manny was still a novice back then
Damn that’s interesting. His life must have been tough man.
Filipinos love to cap too😂 He might be capping about knowing Manny lmao
Many filipino boxers in HNI since this is accurate. Many filipinos in boxing in reality
Was thinking the same, it's a similar reason to why Takamura has to fight so many Americans, it's influenced by the real prevalence of certain nationalities depending of the weight categories.
@@saparapatepete indeed. overall its quite impressive
As an Africian I would love to see African boxers in Hni
I’m sure Morikawa will pull something out of his bag in the near future. He goes after real life examples most of the time. I’m sure there was an African fighter in either Ippo’s division or possibly in the heavier divisions where Takamura fights 🤝🥊
@@KingKoohii You mean Jason Ozma?, i think he was from USA. A really underused character.
I think the first instance of a Filipino boxer was a realistic caricature of what a Filipino can be like in terms of flashyness so obviously he needs another one to not give a bad rep and a Filipino retiried Ippo one of the goated sports anime and manga seems satisfying I have no words for it even if you include the fact I'm the Targeted demographic no words.
Ippo will for sure be back. And we’ll see more Filipino boxers🤝
I was born in Japan but my mom's side are from Philippines. I was in Junior high when I read Hajime no Ippo and found out that the lasy one who defeated Ippo and made him retire was a young rook homeless from Philippines which is pretty dope imo 😅
Do you speak Japanese?
I remember I used to wear Manny Pacquiao shirts in my local boxing gym when I was a teenager. While I wasn’t exactly champ material, I did have quite a right hand according to my coaches. Though eventually I had to leave because I had to deal with growing up after finishing high school.
Also as far as boxers go, Manny Pacquiao is my hero. After all I am Filipino with American citizenship. However he’s not my only hero. Mike Tyson is also one of my all-time favorites. In fact my coaches noticed one time that I kinda tried to emulate Mike Tyson even though it wasn’t quite very well executed.
Mabuhay brother🤝Love the story. Filipinos are born fighters man. Do you travel back and forth between the States and the Philippines?
@@KingKoohii Been to the Philippines a total of six times since my parents are from there, and most recently my wife is from there. Totally recommend visiting. Just be careful for mosquitoes.
Also the whole boxing story I just told on here, this was after my high school wrestling days which I won 3rd place in my weight bracket I was 158 lbs/71.6 kg at my absolute lightest. So I do know both wrestling and boxing. Which I think makes for decent fighting combination in an MMA setting considering how simplistic both fighting disciplines are. Like as long as you’re competent with both boxing and wrestling, which are also the oldest fighting disciplines in the world existing during Ancient Greek days, you could actually go quite far in an MMA setting.
But I digress. Point is I’m no stranger to boxing.
Edit: I’ve also began writing a book about a Filipino-American character that takes cues from The Punisher and the setting he lives in is akin to the Fallout games. Fitted with modern tactical armor and guns along with competent hand-to-hand combat capabilities. That hand-to-hand combat style being a mix of boxing and wrestling though he’s usually more comfortable using guns due to his Calivadan Army Ranger training. And as you may have guessed, yes. His unit is inspired by the real-life 75th Ranger Regiment although the story begins after he just left military service. And he’s quite young. Only 24.
@@nicholascauton9648 that’s badass bro.
Uy! Philippines!
Great vids as always brother and theres a theory about Sendo vs Ricardo bout that we get a Rocky 4 scenario that Sendo dies after the Ricardo fights in Apollo and Joe style because the demage of the Alfredo fights and this led to Ippo comeback but i think Morikawa isnt someone to let a character die like he did with Sawamura after the Mashiba bout i would like to hear your thoughts or a video because many think that Sendo is going to die or worse like what happen with Wally and plus
I’ve heard that theory before. I honestly don’t think he’ll pass away. Maybe some damage that takes him out of commission for a year or two. That’s when Ippo would have to step in and save the day.
But Sendo’s death, especially after his backstory and with his grandmother alone in the shop would be too much.
IPPO WOULD STAY RETIRED IF SENDO DIES DAWG
Nice explanation
Appreciate you brother🤝🥊
What's realistic is that Filipino boxers are used as Stat pads for Japan, Thailand, and Russia and etc. Im not saying the boxers from these countries aren't good, but They bring our boxers there, literally starving and paid to lose. Although there are some boxers that break through like Pacquiao but that's a 1 in a million chances because he was just that good. I've spoken to pro boxers and this is coming from their own personal stories. We have alot of great athletes but they are underfunded, unsupported, and desperate. So they get every chance to earn some money to bring home. I'm very proud of our boxers but unfortunately they are taken advantage of every step of the way
That’s some interesting background information. It’s sad that they have to struggle that much. That makes the start just all the more unfair. And yet they work hard and don’t find any excuses.
I’ve been to the Philippines before. It’s probably my favorite country in the world. And I know the dedication you’re talking about. Respect 🤝
@KingKoohii that's also why Pacquiao is celebrated so much as a boxer since despite all the disadvantages and struggles he made it through and surpassed all expectations. I've trained with pro boxers that have trained with Pacquiao in their younger years and we are all at awe.
Thank you for the video by the way and for giving respect to our boxers.
One thing I like to point out is that Filipinos tend to not have a boxing style. Instead just punching till they hit their enemies, just like in a street brawl

@@allendalemontano151 Yeah I think so
More like why are there so many Mexicans in Hajime No Ippo since the main antagonist is Mexican and other Mexican side characters. However, to give Filipinos their credit, There are lots of Filipinos who compete for the OPBF title which is dominated by Asian countries since the region is sorrounded by mostly Asians. Randy Boy Jr is based off Nonito Donaire and Antonio Guevara is based off Manny Pacquaio. Also fun fact I think Alfredo Gonzalez the mexican boxer is based off Juan Manuel Marquez (the rival of Manny Pacquiao) and likely Erik Morales (another Mexican boxer)
Maybe their backstories are similar. But in terms of fighting styles Guevara and Pacquiao couldn’t be more different. I think it’s somewhat of an homage probably.
But you’re right, the SEA region is highly dominated by Filipino boxers. It’s crazy how early they start boxing. It’s either basketball or boxing. Probably both lol. Manny plays professional basketball as well.
@@KingKoohii Its confirmed hes based off Pacquiao. Both are Southpaw but obviously they will have their differences and their backstory are similar. Yeah Im not suprised seeing Filipinos ranked in the OPBF or them being OPBF Champion.

The reason is simple. In real life philippines is just near japan and being a boxer there earns a filipino pug more dollars than here in the country. Of course, the author is japanese and that is what's happening in real life and in real life in the lower divisions here in the pacific region, there are a lot of filipino boxers. He just copied what is happening in real life to fiction. So there's no wonder there. I'm not surprised. It's like you made a manga based on american boxing in the lower division, and then even though it's american, you ask why there are a lot of mexican fighters in american boxing.
